Ran a 10k - Official Thread (7 Viewers)

It's been awhile on this: What are people doing for early morning running light wise?  Nothing? Clip-on head lamp?

I've only recently gone on roads when it's pitch black and yesterday just carried this little light. I thought it was clip-on, but it's not.

Next week with daylight savings, I'll get some light back, but then need it in Dec and Jan.
For trail running in the dark I like two lights, a headlamp and something further away from the eyes as it tends to reduce shadows and give better depth perception.  I've got 3-4 headlamps I use depending on what I need (how long/battery life, how bright, is it just for an hour in the morning, etc) and a handheld that I've used.  The "big guns" are my Petzl Nao, which can give me at least 8 hours of battery, is bright, and has reactive lighting (changes the strength/lumens based on how far away you are looking).

This past weekend pacing at Javelina from 12:30 AM - 5:00 AM I used my Nao on my head and then put a Black Diamond 250 lumen headlamp around my waist - that combo worked really well and I think I'll do that going forward instead of the handheld.

I rarely run roads in the dark (or anytime), but when I do I tend to go with a headlamp and I wear a neon yellow shirt with reflective strips near the shoulders.

Most bumper stickers are dooshey "look at me" stuff. Stick finger families, political stuff that stays on years after the election, honor rolls, etc. They suck.

I have five. A black heart (2nd brigade, 101st airborne), one from the 82nd, a tri symbol, one from the flying monkeys marathon, and a "share the road" for cyclists. All are for things that matter to me, but can also be taken as "look at me" stuff.  Screw anyone who thinks it's dooshey. Everytime I look at them I smile a little.

I also have a Jayhawks license frame and Army plate. ?
I've got three Oregon stickers (one on rear window, one on each of the little side windows in the back seat).  And a sticker that just says "100".  And I do have a "Western States Endurance Run 100 Mile Finisher" license plate holder.  I bought one for Jim and Surf when they each finished, and Jim bought one for me last year when I did.

I have a ">26.2" sticker but I haven't put it on the car as while it's clearly just indicating an ultra race, I felt it could be seen as downplaying the accomplishment of everything marathon and down.  So that's just pinned to a bulletin board in my office, next to stickers like "RUN MUT (in a RUN DMC design)", "100K", "Pine to Palm 100 Endurance Run Finisher", "Suffer Better",  "iRunFar" and "Singletrack Mind".

A good friend of mine runs a lot and has run a bunch of half's and a couple of marathons (actually training for another right now). His wife buys him those stickers, but instead of the car he puts them on his Craftsman tall shop tool box at home. His reasoning is that one of his boys is going to inherit that, and it will always be a visual reminder of his dad and his running every time he gets into that tool box for something.

If you are going from 32 to 40, which I think is doable, I would slow down your paces and take it easy on the hills.

Here is what I see......  Increase of 25% in mileage + additional hills + faster running = possible injury.  Just do one of these at a time.

Admittedly, if you look at my weekly mileage, I bounce all around from 50 to 85+ MPW, but my body is used to it.  I still don't think I could do back to back to back 80 mile weeks.  So you just want to be careful you don't stress your body too much.

Left achilles tendon is sore today which is very new.  Tender to touch and I'm not too thrilled with that.  So far (knock on wood), I've avoided any kind of injuries holding me back.  I will definitely take it easy/shut it down next couple days to see if it's anything real.

Tight calves? Hamstrings?

He’s looking good so far!  Yeah Surf!

Youll have to let us know what you think of that race.  Sounds like a fun environment.
Dude, it was insane.  As a 5-loop race the only crew access is there at the start/finish, which they refer to as Javelina Jeadquarters.  And that place is a combination of the biggest aid/crew station you've ever seen with a street fair, a campground, a tailgate, a Halloween party, and a rave.

Just before the start.  Just some chick dancing with fire and your buddy Jimmy Dean Freeman shaking his bare ### (semi-NSFW)

And they're off

Sun rising over the campground

The desert has some amazing colors

Crew tents lined up like outside a college football stadium on a Saturday morning

Special IPA brew for the race

Patrick Reagan led almost the entire time.  Far off of his 13:01 course record from last year, but still won by like 2 hours

Washing machine style course, alternating directions each loop

Dance party

She ran the entire 100 miles in this

The MC (and co-race director) Jubilee on top of the van.  She was on the mic for at least 15 hours on Saturday.  And the fire girl dancing with some lit-up wings

Jubilee and RD Jamil Coury, capturing more footage for his multiple YouTube channels

They had two night races as well, a one-looper and a two-looper.  Here's Tim Tollefson and a handful of costumed runners taking off on the one-looper

As for the race, like most 100 milers it was up and down for Surf.  As I mentioned his goal was sub-23:00, and his plan was to go about 4 hours on the first 23-mile loop (an extra 4-mile section on that loop), keep it at 4 hours for the next 19-mile loop, and try not to let that slip much past 4:30 on subsequent loops.  And it started really well as he came in from loop 1 in 3:48 and said it felt easy, and he was feeling great.  During the next loop the heat picked up and he wasn't feeling nearly as good, but that loop was on track at 4:05.  But on loop 3 it fell apart a bit.  He apparently has been dealing with some chest pains the past few months, and has had all sorts of tests with the docs not able to find anything.  And on loop 3 he started feeling pain in the chest.  He walked for an hour to try and get it to calm down, and when he got to the aid station at mile 52 he talked to medical, and for obvious reasons they held him there for awhile.  They advised him to drop and said they could take him back to the start, but he wasn't ready to do that.  He spent a bunch of time icing himself, drinking cold water, etc, thinking maybe the overheating was contributing.  After what he said was at least 45 minutes he decided to go on, and after signing a couple of additional waivers they let him do so.  As he walked out he reached back into his pack to grab some ice to put into the front of his pack, and felt a sharp pain through his shoulder and down into his pec.  He realized that he'd been doing that over and over for hours, and thought that maybe the "chest pains" were really more muscular or nerve, related to that repeated motion.  And they went away, and didn't come back.

So loop 3 was 5:23, but he left on loop 4 feeling better as temps cooled.  I got some food, watched the short races take off (the scene at sunset was totally crazy), took a quick 15-20 minute nap back in the tent and was back at the aid station waiting for him at about 11:00 PM.  He rolled in a little after midnight after a 4:53 loop in 18:08 for 80.5 miles.  As I said earlier when we headed out on that final loop he told me he was fine with sub-24, that the time lost on loop 3 wasn't going to let a PR happen, and that he was fine with a 5:30 loop to get that time.  And we walked much of the first 10 miles as the course slowly gains about 700'.  But we were moving pretty well, mixed in a little jogging here and there, and rolled into the mile 91 aid station in about 2:30.  But he had told me that part of why he wanted to walk much of the ups was so he could run as much of the final 9 miles back down as possible, and we did.  We went from 15/16/17 minute miles of mostly walking to 14:33, 14:02, 13:09, 13:23 splits of mostly shuffling along.  That's when I dropped the comment about sub-23 still being possible, and he just started picking it up - 11:49, 11:16, 11:42.  We blow through the last aid station with just a quick top-off of the bottles, and then it was 10:55, 11:04, and a hard finish of 10:27 in mile 100.  You have to run through the aid station and around camp, probably about 2/10 of a mile to the finish, and I had a huge grin on my face knowing he had it.

I don't know if I'll ever run a sub-24:00 100 miler, but I've paced him for 40 miles to a 23:03 finish and 19 miles to a 22:54, and that's almost as cool.

@SayWhat? to sum up my thoughts on the race, it's pretty much what I felt going in.  Being a looped course and in the desert (not mountains), I haven't really ever wanted to run it.  I'm a better hiker than a runner, and I like the woods/forest much more than the desert.  Plus I just love the idea of covering 100 miles, not 20 miles 5 times (if that makes sense).  But if you or anyone else wants a flatish, fast 100 miler that is super easy to crew, Javelina is perfect.

Tight calves? Hamstrings?
Nope.  Everything else the same.  When I ran last night in the dark (with a headlamp for the first time!), I missed a drop in a sidewalk that was an awkward step (was expecting to land at same height and it was slightly lower) and I think may have just tweaked it.  I don't know if that was it but it felt a little sore when I woke up this morning and I could feel it when I started running today.  I was hoping it might loosen up and go away but it was there the whole run.  It's not an awful pain but I did feel it with each step.  When I grab it and squeeze, it definitely hurts more.

Back when I was in college, I'm 95% sure I partially tore both of my achilles playing basketball (looking back on it now as I had no idea at the time).  I was young and dumb at the time and never saw anyone but had awful pain for a few months walking that took a long time to eventually go away.  I've still got a couple spots on both of them (like knots) that hurt if I touch/squeeze them but has not been an issue at all with any running or other activities.  I'm quite sure it's scarred/healed and will always be that way.  This pain feels the same but over a larger area.  It just feels inflamed.  I don't think it's a huge deal but it probably needs some rest.  I have no idea how much or how long.  If it feels better tomorrow, I'll try running a little on it again but if it starts acting up, I'll just shut it down until it's gone before I make it worse.

Of note, I've had this shoulder/upper arm pain for a few months that I finally saw someone for a couple days ago.  Subscapularis tendonitis (part of the rotator cuff) and I've got to do some PT and take some indomethacin (NSAID -- anti-inflammatory).  Being on that will likely help this overall so that's actually a good thing.

Like I mentioned, I've yet to have anything major over the last year+ since I started.  I've had occasional calf pain/soreness or muscle tightness but all things that I knew I could run through.  This is the first one that, while not that painful, I can tell might be different and I can see turning into something more if I'm not smart.  I'll give it another day or two to see how it trends and go from there.

I’ll jump into the injury crowd. Since my race Sunday, I still cannot walk normally on my left leg. It is my lower leg, above the ankle. I’ve researched and it is either a really, really bad shin splint or a stress fracture. I scheduled an appointment with my PT to get an X-ray. Unfortunately, they do not accept my insurance anymore, and they said the visit would be over 300 dollars. I cancelled, but I am thinking I may have to go to a walk-in to get an x-ray.

Not surprisingly, it sounds like you have a good handle on it.

I mentioned the calves/hamstrings because I've slowly started to believe that almost all the Achilles and heel problems I've had for almost 10 years have been caused by tight calves.  Now that I'm focusing on them*  pain in that area has been much, much less.

* By focusing on them I just mean rolling them with a rolling pin and stretch every once in a while instead of doing absolutely nothing.

Yup, I know all of my achilles and plantar issues over the years are directly related to my perpetually tight calves.  It's almost always something up or down the kinetic chain causing whatever hurts to hurt.

It's really been aching tonight :(

Oh well, let's see what the next couple days bring.

Also, little funny story. On my run today, I'm on the sidewalk down this one street that is really pretty and always has tons of walkers, runners, and bikers. The sidewalk is not huge but decent size and could easily accommodate 3 people.

Well, these 2 women, probably in their mid 40s in nice exercise clothing are walking in the same direction that I'm going. They are talking to each other and aren't really paying much attention as a result. And, of course, they are taking up the whole sidewalk. Since it had been raining all morning and lots of leaves on the ground, I wasn't that interested in running on the wet grass to get around them.

As I'm approaching them from behind, I'm probably 10-15 feet away, and announce "on your left" so I can try and squeeze by.

These 2 both jumped and reacted like they were in some haunted house. They each turned to each other and shrieked and one said to me as I'm going by "OMG, don't scare us like that".

It was one of the funniest things I'd witnessed. These 2 were legit frightened as they had absolutely no clue I was coming up. I didn't say this when I was immediately on them either. After I passed, I could still hear them going on about how scared they were. Another woman about 100 feet ahead coming in the opposite direction had to see/hear what happened and had a huge smile as I ran by her.

I couldn't stop laughing for at least a quarter mile.

Nice to see some good reports.  Managed to get ~70 biking this weekend.  Long flight Monday.  No biking this week.  I'll have to make do with SFBayDuck profiles like this.  Good pictures included.  BTW Sean, I think I have a good shot at winning picture week this week.

I glanced at these on Strava before looking at the map.  I thought "what the hell part of Alabama is he in?!?!?! "

So I got a text from Nike this morning alerting me that the VaporFly 4% was back in stock.  I still think they're probably the running shoe version of the Shake Weight, but I decided to give them a try.  Worst-case scenario if I don't like how they fit/feel, I'll sell them and probably make some money.

PS:  Is it Saturday yet?

Hmm,  I like the chart at the end listing all the shoes.

The shoe I've used in my last three races (all PRs), Adidas Adizero Boston, ranked 4th being 1.5% faster.

The shoe I train in most over the last few years and even used in my marathon this spring, Asics Cumulus, was slightly negative.

Another training shoe I wear that I'd never race in, Hoka One One Bondi, ranked last.

Give them a few runs. You’re going to put them on and laugh. After your first run, your legs and feet will be sore, but don’t toss them just yet.

Since I'm Strava-challenged, here are my monthly totals for the year:

Jan: 0
Feb: 8
March: 24
April: 50
May: 62
June: 11
July: 37
August: 22
September: 24
October: 89

Looking back, I was actually starting to put in some decent long runs in May. The frequency wasn't there, running only on weekends, but still putting in a solid 10 or 11-miler every Sunday. I have absolutely no idea why I basically quit. Maybe it got hot? Who knows.

Up next - 126 miles in November. Also, I'm down 4.6 pounds since the start of October. Only 20+ more to go

Hah, my shoes (Mizuno Wave Inspire) are the 2nd-worst.

I went out and got a new pair of Brooks Ghosts during lunch today since my current pair have 290 miles on them.  I didn't want to race a marathon in shoes with 300+ miles.  They aren't a good performer in that article, but I have never run a marathon in anything else.

Bit the bullet and paid for an X-ray at the walk-in. Leg is still in pain when I walk. No fractures. They said it’s just a mild case of being a little b*###. We’ll see how my run goes in the morning.

How many Vaporfly's could you have bought for that x-ray?

At least one. Forgot to share with y’all, the announcer on race day said, “we have our 2nd female finisher coming in” as I crossed the line. Guess he was doing a bit of foreshadowing there. Maybe it’s time for a haircut?

Ugh, my achilles is screaming today.  Anything more than a few steps and I'm walking with a limp and it hurts much more today than yesterday.  Don't see any running in the near future.  With how quick and suddenly this came on, it has to be from that misstep I took 2 nights ago.  Sucks.

Maybe Ke$ha was playing too loudly?

That article is going to require more ☕
Still no sign of when the Kinvara 10's are coming out and the 9's are still $110.  And unfortunately, now, running warehouse no longer has my size.  I found another site that has 1 pair left.  I might just bite the bullet and get that pair now but I know as soon as I do, the others are going to drop in price.  And they don't have the 8's in my size anymore either.

Can get some 8s still from Saucony site - 13s?

About a week ago I called my high school track and XC coach but he didn't answer. I haven't talked to him in probably 15 years. I left a message mostly saying "thanks". Telling him that I had recently started running again and was thinking of him and the things I had learned from him. I found out just now that he died today. He was out riding his bike yesterday was found in distress in a field and rushed to the hospital.

He was one of the best people I ever knew. He had a small farm and used to bring fresh watermelons and cantaloupe to cross country meets. He had a way of always wanting to get the best out of you. Just such weird timing and kind of a gut punch thing to learn today.

Damn, sorry to hear. I bet he got your message and I’m guessing that made his day. Good on you for making that call.

Wow.  So awful.  Thankfully you made that call.

Thinking of you and his family and friends during this difficult time.

Sorry for your loss, bud.

That's eerie and awful at the same time. Sorry gb.
