I'm on cloud 9 over here. Now having lunch with my daughter, who is in town from college. You guys rock. Thanks for the help and encouragement in this journey... wonder what I can do in a month at the next one.

So stoked for you and @ChiefD!  Congrats fellas.

And @Juxtatarot, that's just crazy fast.  Another AG podium, well deserved.

@gruecd, sorry things didn't go your way today.  This sport can be a #####.  But still, mad props for getting it done in still a great (for most mortals) time.

@Juxtatarot - wow. Just wow. Time to meet for some food and beers here in a bit if you are up for it.

@The Iguana - another wow. Seeing you at the halfway point and hearing your time gave me a major boost for the next 4 or 5 miles.

@gruecd - sorry your day didn’t go as planned. But still a great time, especially in those conditions. Good of you to scale back if you know it’s not your day. That takes some solid discipline.

@ChiefD - cannot believe you just did that. You are a #BMF and sexy as hell to boot.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKK  YESSSSSSSSSS!  :headbang:

In Summary

So I mentioned earlier I had a lot of time to think about things during the back half of this race. And everything over the last year came flooding into my brain. The diagnosis of my stomach stuff, that bout of sickness in the spring, how I have felt going on a year now. And it's all related and at the same time my new reality.

My body is different now. I can't get to where I could before in terms of fitness. My body is exhausted daily - every run I do is extremely frustrating because I rarely feel good. And when I get sick, I can't recover in time to get back on the saddle and build on my base. This sinus infection I have now will probably require at least another bout of medicine.

And it sucks. It's over for me as a distance runner. My heart is heavy and I'm bordering on tears writing this right now. There will not be another marathon. There will more than likely never be another half marathon. I can't keep doing this knowing I'm getting slower and slower and there doesn't seem to be much I can do about it.
La-di-da I'm just going to just fight a difficult chronic illness so that I can get back to running and train during one of the worst winters we've had in a long time with snow and ice and log weekly and monthly mileage highs despite being older and then traveling out of town in ####ty weather conditions and hit my A goal and PR my marathon even though I was positive I'd never even be able to run one again.

Pretty good day for you (aside from the Vaseline in crevices that is)

Considering the flurry of texts I just got about people getting drunk and I'm just sitting at home on my couch, I'm assuming I'll be the first to post a race report. Fitting since I finished the race before anyone else. Pretty sure that means I won, right? ;)

So, woke up a little before my alarm was going to go off, laid there a moment thinking I might wait for it and maybe hit a snooze but then decided, nah... let's get moving! Had a little morning constitutional, fittle farted around a bit as I debated what to actually wear and then finally got dressed and gathered almost all of my belongings. Ultimately decided to wear my compression shorts, a short sleeve compression shirt, and a long sleeve running shirt that had been swag from a previous event. Opted to only use a little Vaseline, and that just on the nipplage.

Left the house about 6:15, stopped at the gas station close to my house and picked up a 44 oz ice tea mostly unsweet ice tea with just the right amount of sweetened tea for this morning of running. On the drive to Carmel, I ate one of the bananas, both of the cliff bars that I brought along with me, and drank about 1/2 of the glass of tea. Got to Carmel and parked in the parking garage closest to the start line about about 6:45. Put my shoes on, realized I forgot my rain poncho at home and headed downstairs. Hung out in the lobby a few minutes then decided to go find a port-a-potty for round 2 in the bathroom. All came out well and then headed back over near the parking garage. Had a nice outdoor spot out of the rain, chatted with some fellow runners for a bit and eventually headed to the start area at about 7:45.

With the rain going on, they didn't really have the corrals set up as they should have and everyone was just kind of milling about and jockeying for position. I was working my way up to what seemed a decent spot - saw the 3:30 marathon pacer not far ahead and fi, gured I would go stand near him. As I made it "close" to there, I hear someone say something like "hey, you ready?" Really have no idea what @ChiefD said, I just know he saw me, said hi and we chatted it up for a bit until they sang the national anthem and fired the gun. It was awesome seeing a friendly face and getting to give each other some encouragement while we waited.

Gun fires, it's kind of a mess to start, people did a pretty crappy job of lining up for their pace and the first part of the race is a little chunky - I am sure it always is, but felt a little extra chunky based on the previous race I did that was a little more spaced out on how they started things. After about a quarter mile, I found a nice happy spot on the left side of the pack out of the mass of people and finally settled into my pace. About that same time, it becomes a nice downhill stretch right off the bat.

Funny little thing happens to start too... at about .14 into the race, I accidentally triggered a manual lap on my watch. After that all of the lap reports that I got were at 1.14, 2.14, 3.14, etc. Kind of funky but no big deal. Really funny that my watch had me marked down for running 13.14 miles by the end so it all worked out anyway! I'll do the report off of the mile times... easier to keep track of that way.

Mile 1 - 7:53, HR 148 - Given the clunky start and the gentle downhill start, it all balanced off and I'm about on pace. HR is fine and dandy and I'm feeling wet but good.

Mile 2 - 7:41, HR 156 - Nice straight section through the heart of town, slightly downhill, still feeling good. A little worried about the extra pace but not too worried since HR is in about the right spot and it is downhill.

Mile 3 - 7:42, HR 158 - Still downhill, feeling good, couple more round-abouts to traverse - shocker! All going well.

Mile 4 - 7:49, HR 158 - Still downhill, still going as planned, still banking some time, HR still in good shape. All going great.

Mile 5 - 7:58, HR 162 - Ok, slowed down just a little, HR up just a little, downhill portion is over. Things are flat. Still All things just dandy.

Mile 6 - 8:05, HR 162 - Was starting to feel warm here. Made 2 changes. About the start of the mile, I pitched the hat I was wearing - it had quit raining and my head was hot. Still feeling a little warm, decided I needed to loose a layer. Couldn't really manage switching the bib from the outside shirt to the inside one (need to get one of those bib/belt contraptions, imo), so I spent about a 1/2 mile taking off the long sleeve shirt, then taking off the short sleeve compression shirt, and then putting back on the long sleeve shirt with the bib. As the woman running just behind me noted, it was quite the work of art! Lost a little bit of time in the process but felt much better!

Mile 7 - 7:53, HR 165 - end of the downhill portion... this mile was basically flat before starting uphill. HR creeps up a bit but still feeling pretty good.

MIle 8 - 7:57, HR 166 - Mile 7 ended and mile 8 began with this nasty little hill in a neighborhood. Mile 8 continued to be basically a gentle climb the whole way. Had to keep reminding myself to shorter, quicker steps. By the end of this mile I was feeling it a bit.

Mile 9 - 8:04, HR 167 - All gently sloping uphill. Near the end of it was a drink station. You can see my pace dip as I tried to get a drink... still need to practice this or just skip it. Time to dig deep at this point. Not too far to go, but not getting there fast enough!

Mile 10 - 8:04, HR 168 - Still slight going up hill. Not much but just enough. By the end I'm telling myself it's almost over and to keep it up. Feeling it but know I'm on pace and don't want to let it go.

Mile 11 - 8:01, HR 168 - This section actually had a slight decline and I was cruising along. Should have gotten a little bit of time back but... If you zoom in on my path on strava, near the end of mile 11 you will see the course takes a right hand turn. I literally came :thisclose: to eating it. Rain was coming down, glasses where soaked, had them on top my head so now I'm running blind-ish. Missed a step as it transferred from road to trail/sidewalk and almost fell on my face. Had to retrace a few steps to pick up my glasses as someone almost crushed them. Other than that, no big deal.

Mile 12 - 8:06, HR 170 - Time to put up or shut up. I thought I might shut up part way through this one... there was a bit of a short steep hill as the course transferred from one trail onto the Monon (Monon used to be a railway that they've turned into like 25 miles of trail from downtown Indy to Westfield, very cool, IMO). Anyway, the transfer to "climb" up on to the Monon made me want to cry. I made it up and kept going but you can see a significant dip in pace.

Mile 13 - 7:51, HR 171 - "Just one to go, be a BMF, finish this thing, plenty of time to cry at the finish" that kind of thing is going through my head. I know the goal is there if I just keep moving! But I am hurting a bit, won't lie!

.1(4) to finish - 7:22 pace.

Total time: 1:44:08 - 7:57/mile pace. (26 minute PR, lol...)

255 out of 1428 total

182 out of 709 men

17 out of 90 in AG

Walked around on cloud 9 afterwards. Got to see @ChiefD come through at the half being all smiles and well on pace. Got a picture of @Juxtatarot coming toward the finish, I'll upload it later. Saw @gruecd coming to the finish but it had started raining again, my phone screen was wet and I couldn't get my camera opened fast enough. Couldn't find them after the race and then headed back to the south side of town to see my daughter, who was in town from college.

Awesome getting to meet everyone and swap stories over dinner with Chief, Mrs. Chief and Juxtatrot. Thanks for the good times and sharing the weekend with me!

@Juxtatarot through the halfway point in 1:26:47.  He's killing it.

@gruecd through the halfway point in 1:30:04.  I could only dream of a time like this.  For a HM!  Let alone a full.

@ChiefD through the quarter point in 1:01:56.  <4 still within reach and he's set up well for a negative split!

@The Iguana through the halfway point (HM) in 53:55.  I think he's going for a 1:45 time -- saving energy for his negative split as well.
I think their 6.55 mile timing strip was off. It was right before the 7 mile marker, IMO. I didn't negative split at all and hit my time.

Looks like they've been getting rained-on the whole time.  If the race was just a few miles south they probably would have got some breaks from the wet.  Incredible that they're all running like they are in that.  Wind looks OK (if you can believe WU) and temps are perfect.  Would be a fantastic racing day were it not for the rain.

"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"
Wind was negligible most of the time. Rain was on and off. Got done and my wife told me it hadn't rained at all at home. I live about 20 miles +/- south of the race.

It's more about negative splitting the effort without blowing up.  If that results in a positive split, then that was the optimium race for you.  Looks like you accomplished that to perfection.

Great report and way to handle the adversity (shirt change and glasses retrieve) without coming unhinged.

Yeah, the half marathon course (first half of the marathon too) was basically gently downhill for the first 6 miles +/- and then gently uphill for the last half of it, more or less.

But my comment was more that the "official results" make it look like I negative split the crap out of that race. The web site shows me as doing the first half in 53:55 and the 2nd half in 50:14. I'd have to do the math on the report above but I'd bet it was almost the reverse of that. The timing mat for 6.55 was misplaced, IMO. No big deal or anything, just pointing it out.

Congrats again! Great race report!

I think you shouted my name and I think I saw you but they announced my name on the PA around the same time so I wasn’t certain.  I’m sure I look like a fatigued, drenched rat in that photo!

BTW, yes, something was wrong with the 6.55 timing mat.

Simply outstanding gents. Great work out there -

@gruecd even if your day didn't go as planned, it's still impressive as hell.

@Juxtatarot that was awesome, it's all been said but damn the work you put in to get there is astounding

@ChiefD  :lmao:  that's awesome man, killing it

@The Iguana great report, great race

This thread really is a source of constant inspiration.

Did you guys enjoy the overnight snow and ice in Indy? I'm sure some of you would have preferred it to the rain yesterday! That's Indiana for you this time of year. I said anything from snow to 70 or 80 could have been possible even with the rain forecast we had. It's melting now but we had more than an inch of snow on the ground by the time I went to bed last night.

and for the record, still floating on a cloud over here... Eating breakfast and thinking about my plan and goals for May 4th.

@The Iguana - great report. You killed it today.  Awesome result and a huge leap forward for you and your future running.

#BMF.

Honored to meet you this weekend.
Really glad to have bumped into you at the start. Also glad to have found you at the halfway point. I was starting to think I had missed you while bumbling about trying to compose myself after I finished. But then you come trucking along. I'm planning to give you encouragement and you just want my time report! Thanks for asking.

I think I saw your wife at one point on the course but not positive. It was a rainy period and I was looking through water spots on my glasses.

Well it wasn’t a total disaster, sub 1:26 my 2nd best time. At the beer garden waiting on friends. Mistakes were made prerace, but i’ll get into that later.

Benefit to getting faster was #17 in the post race massage line. Got frog legged and chicken winged like a mf. Race went well, encouraged for 6 weeks till next half and pleased with today. Will get a brief report together later. Happy Sunday y’all.

Awesome... Looked like a well run race split wise.  Tough effort based on HR all race, hopefully not a suffer fest. Crazy considering you aren't even at peak fitness.

Getting so fast.  Looks like another well run race. Well done!!!

Nice work.  2nd best time at your performance level is still a great race.  Eager for the report.

Just closed out Week 7 of my training plan and the month of March with an 18km (11mi) run, 12 at tempo.  Actually about MP-15 just because I felt like it.  Bit of a headwind combined with an overpass around 14km got me huffing and the HR over 150 for the first time in a couple weeks.

332km (206mi) for the month, a new high.

Elevation gain of 3,365m (11,040ft).  My first YOY decline ever.  😢  I only needed a bit more than 100m to surpass March of last year but April would be a lost cause anyway.  So it was inevitable for this training cycle.

8 more weeks of street running and then I'm going to crank elevation like a madman.

Based on Strava, today is a PR for you, no?

Based on you, @The Iguana, and me, we're starting to build up a little cadre of ~1:45 HMers.  Well, I'm 1:47 but I'll roll with you guys if you let me.

@bushdocda going for 1:35 for his next one. He's building some serious speed.

I'd like to join the 1:45 group. Hope to be there in October.

Those wandering around the Barkley last night sure enjoyed it.
Yup, 80 degrees yesterday, sleet and snow last night with temps down to 10 degrees at the high point of the course.  Twenty-one runners made it to loop 2, but only six runners made it out on to loop 3.  I think only 2-3 of them have a real chance to make it out on loop 4, but if the weather is bad today it might be zero.  The only previous finishers in the race this year, Jared Campbell (ankle) and John Kelly (quit) are already out.

My favorite quotes from The Real Keith's Twitter coverage so far:

"Finally, the rain has stopped.  Now it's sleeting."

"Little Hell wasn't little."

"Alan Holtz is still on loop 1, using the Roomba technique of navigation." - he ended up taking 26 hours to make it back to camp, and didn't even have all his book pages.  And I don't think that's even a record for longest single loop.

"Tim Hardy, two-time human sacrifice, is back in camp, having been found on hwy 62."

"They are progressively less enthused about continuing - laz"

Jamil Coury, at camp between loops 2 and 3:  "Jamil:  I'll take a couple minutes this time.  Crew:  Didn't you take enough minutes out there?"

#bm100 twitter weekend may be my favorite twitter weekend of the year.

Indeed. Last half was in marathon training 2 seasons ago so the PR was likely. Today was a test race of sorts that has me sore but should be on point for SOS runs this week, maybe slid out a day.

Never felt so good after an 8 mile run.

First of all, after a full day of rain yesterday and then a temp drop, today is gorgeous. Full sun, slight wind, and about 40 degrees at run start.

New cadence feels natural now and I didn't have to think about it all run. I haven't looked yet, but it should be between 175-180. It was a pretty easy run in the low 9s with moderate elevation putting together a couple of my normal routes. HR in the 150s all run and most of it due to the hills. At the end, pushed the last mile with relative ease. Even had a decent hill during it that I was able to power through nicely.

Legs feel great, run felt like a jog. In a good place now.

Once again, great racing this weekend fellas.

Next weekend will be the third race I've ever bailed on. Second was a couple weeks ago. Skipping the local half marathon to see my wife and daughter. Totally worth it. (Even if I don't like skipping this race)

Things going well on the treatment front?

After today's snow run, and hopefully the last of the season, I'm really looking forward to this tomorrow. If the snow's melted anyway.

I dont know how you guys do it. Since I didn’t get out until about 11:00 it turned into my first real warm, shirt-coated-in-salt kind of run of the season. Klimat said 60, and that’s probably about right for the beginning, but it was mid-70s by the end.

Out of curiosity, I just did the rough math.

1st half time ~ 51:04 +/-

2nd half time ~ 53:04 +/-

Official timing had me flopped the other way around and then some: 53:55 and 50:14

Based on the info from my Garmin, it was mostly a slight downhill or flat the first 1/2 and flat or slightly uphill the 2nd half so I feel good about the consistency of effort.

Also was looking at the results of those in my age group. 1st 1/2 time was 18th of 90 in my AG. 2nd half time I was 16th of 90 in my AG. Overall, I finished 17th of 90. And, I was "only" 13:18 from making the podium - I cut 2X that amount of time off of my first attempt! ;)

Besides just more miles and effort, I need to make myself run up and down more hills, IMO. Problems is how flat it is around me - immediate options are only overpasses, etc. There's a few places I know I can go, just takes effort to hunt them down. Need to make myself do so as the weather improves.

I won't say never, but I can't imagine trying to train for a March/April marathon again. Maintenance mode is hard enough.

I thought it would be much harder than it actually is.  Granted, we've had a good winter, but even -30C (-22F) was tolerable with enough layers, a good touque, and a neck gaiter.

This is based on the fact that the course really was pretty flat. There were 2 "hills" that were a bit steep, 1 going into a neighborhood at about mile 7 and one going up onto the Monon trail at about mile 12. But even both of those were fairly short lived and not that big a deal - not compared to what I remember running "back in the day" in southern Indiana. But even the slow lengthy climbs were in my head a little more than they should have been. But I did hold my own for the most part on them compared to others around me, IMO.

:goodposting:

Actually when getting ready to run one of the "fun" versions of the tough mudders with some guys at work a couple years ago, we did a ton of stair climbs at work. I haven't done that at all since I started running again. Hadn't even thought of it. I need to add that back into the repertoire and run some stairs in the near future. Thanks, totally forgot about that before. There's a great set of them in the fitness area at work that are perfect for it.

Thanks for the reminder!

I haven't done it in a while but with my oldest's track practice at a high school football stadium I was reminded of a track/bleacher hybrid speed workout I used to do. May need to bust out that special level of hell sometime soon.
