Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

No, that was actually me. Then @ChiefD followed suit and agreed.

And to give full credit, I think @tri-man 47 has expoused that idea here long ago. That dude has wisdom.

But yes, I no longer run with music. Don't miss it at all.
I had never actually run with music until a few months ago and noted before I tried it how much I like listening to the ambient sounds. But got the bone conduction headphones anyway. I really like them on some of the "fun runs" and really embraced them early on. But there had been some runs recently where I'd take them off/turn them off part way through. Intentionally did the 5k without them - really wanted to be thinking about the run and concentrating on running it exactly as I mapped it out in my head. Then left them at home the other day on accident and did a run from work and liked it. Intentionally left them off last night when I went to run the canal - actually had them in my hand when about to leave home and decided to try it without them.

I will likely wear them, especially if I end up on the indoor track for whatever reason and probably will wear them on long easy runs. But I'd imagine pretty much any race day or hard runs will be done without them going forward.

:hifive:  nothing i'm not used to.. was just hopeful for "ideal" conditions one of these years.

that said I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR SUNDAY
My 2 recent 1/2's have been in very similar conditions. Luckily I didn't really have any significant winds for either one.

Go get 'em!

I'm doing a 5K on Sunday.  It's right by my house on a regular route of mine and I've done it several years, so pretty weak if I just went there for the free waffles without registering.  I'm a far cry from race shape, so I'm using this as training/practice/ future motivation, etc.   Music: yes; beets: no; neurostim: no.

This race has notoriously had crap weather the last few years.  Sunday's forecast: 60F and 80% chance of rain.  :lmao:

I'm still a little sore from Monday's injection, but the shakeout jog this morning felt good.

oh, and i took the dog out for her first ever jog last night. we covered a quick 2 miles at her pace... which i got the feeling she was moderating for me as she was just sort of trotting happily along. that little ##### can clip even she's tired.

been working with her off leash, teaching her commands, etc. but i was worried that on a run she would weave in and out, stop to sniff, get excited by squirrels.  nope. the only time she didn't run more or less straight ahead was if she got spooked by a car horn.... or noisy building machinery.

all in all a success.  now to build up her stamina and i might have me a running buddy.

My dog loves running with me. The only problem I have had is that twice he has ended up with a cut on his paw. Really sucks too cause both times it happened I thought he was just reaching a point of being tired - he didn't limp, cry, nothing, just slowed down like he was exhausted. Both times after a little walk, he started pulling again to run. We ran a little slower because I thought he was overheating. But after the runs I found the spots on his paw.

So, I've gotten a little selective about when and where I take him with me. I try to make the routes with him have grass he can get into if he wants/needs.

Just did my 2nd run with the Garmin 245.

My pacing line looks so much less choppy than usual.  I always wondered if I was doing something differently than other people but maybe it was just the watch.  And the HR data looks spot on and also far less choppy.

The interface is great and I was able to get it set up how I wanted heading into the run.  So far it's everything I'd want.  It also is slightly smaller than the 235 which is really nice (and the 235 was already a pretty good size for running).

At this point, I would highly recommend it.

this was really my biggest worry with her. we play fetch and she runs.. basically ... wind sprints 20 times without giving up. but i know she'll stop if i stop throwing the ball. on something like a straight jog, i'm not sure how to manage her output. aside from a wagging tongue and slowing pace is there a better way to tell when she's had enough?

do you bring water for the dog? stop every so often for him/her to catch a break?

i've heard (old wives tale, perhaps) that dogs will run with you until they drop & i'd rather that not happen.

Man I wish mine would stop sniffing, peeing, and chasing stuff.  I'm constantly working on training with him, and have a pocketful of treats when we hit the trails, but whether off or on leash he's still often doing all of that dog stuff.  He's getting better, but it's the damned husky in him.

Last week he took off after a rabbit, and was gone and out of sight for 3-4 minutes before he came trotting back.  Today he literally climbed a tree.  Saw a squirrel around a bend and took off after it, and apparently treed it.  The trunk was at probably a 50-55 degree angle, and he just started climbing up it like a damned mountain lion.  In the few seconds it took me to catch up to him, he was already a good 10'-15' off the ground.  I yelled at him to come down, freaking out he'd try to just jump, but he was able to turn around and come partly back down the trunk and then jump off.

Mine "sprained his ankle" stepping in a hole while on a full sprint (we think), dude had a limp for over a month and we had to finally shut him down to let it heal up.  That was fun, not even taking him out for a walk for 7 days.  A month after that on a trail run he went between some barbed wire and gashed his leg.  Luckily that didn't bother him but we had to put him on antibiotics for the unlikely chance of tetanus (not very common among dogs, apparently).

I do carry water on longer runs or if it's hot.  I just bought a new Ultimate Direction waist pack that holds one bottle and fits my phone and a little collapsible bowl.  And being a northern breed I try to get him out early morning if it's going to be hot.  But I've noticed he will start to slow down a bit when he gets overheated, and of course that tongue starts to hang.  So I'll find some shade, bust out the water, and make him a take break before moving on.  If there is water around he'll get in it, his favorite is a horse trough that we pass on our normal route, and that always helps a lot.

I go to a field with my dog and throw a Frisbee. When doing that, he will push himself too far if I don't pay attention on a hot day but it is pretty easy to tell when he's getting to the point that I have to call it - he would keep playing until he passed out, i think. But that is him doing all out sprints - he rarely lets the Frisbee touch the ground - well, that's not entirely true. After the first few throws, he will drop the Frisbee before he gets back to me and make me walk to pick it up while he catches a breather, he's pretty smart.

That said, on a run, I have yet to actually make him stop running other than the issue with his paw. The fastest I've gone with him is about 7:30 miles and he never once seemed to want to slow down due to being tired. Big difference for him between doing sprints with the Frisbee and going out for a smooth, consistent paced run.

If we drive somewhere to run, I always have water for him in the car for when we are done. I haven't ever stopped during the run to give him water, however. He hasn't seemed to need it yet. The weather hasn't been particularly hot on any of our longer runs yet.

As it starts to heat up, I'll definitely have to carry water for him on any run of significant length. He is pretty furry and the heat does tend to get to him but we haven't had to deal with that on a run yet. Hikes, sure but not on a run. I have a collapsible bowl also. Those are pretty awesome.

Go walk or hike and mine has this issue. But if we go for a run, he's got a one track mind - just keep running. As a matter of fact, he will wait until the very last moment before going to the bathroom. I have to try to pay attention because he won't stop to pee or poop until he absolutely has to. He goes from full speed to stop in an instant, usually leading to me about losing an arm as the leash pulls tight. Then he looks at me like he's saying "sorry, man, I couldn't go another step". If I am diligently paying attention, I can spot the signs that it's getting close and I'll try to slow to a walk for a moment so he can go without having his neck yanked.

Someone posted a video of the dog that ran a 4 minute mile. I'm not sure if Oliver could do that but I do know he wants to go faster than me often. If we are running where other people are running, he wants nothing more than to be in the front of everyone. The worst is the one part we go run at that has quite a few others on the trails. If we get withing "striking distance" he starts tugging on the leash just a little more and a little more until we pass them. It's like some personal affront to him to let some one run in front of us.

Not to rain on anybody's doggie parade, but one of my neighbors lost their dog a couple of summers ago because one of their relatives was throwing a ball with it on a warm and humid day. The poor dogs body just shut down about an hour later.

Just be careful out there with those pups.

this is my fear

when we got home last night she drank the entire bowl of water and laid out on the hardwood. but 20 minutes later she was out in the backyard chasing my kid around like she had just sniffed coke.

effing dogs

Solo, as in no kid in the stroller?
I did get a lot of strange looks.

No, I've always run with the wife whenever we've gone out with our daughter in the stroller.  We will take turns pushing her. Today, I went out while she was at work so it was only me.  Pushing it sucks mostly because I'm taller and also because it only feels comfortable pushing with my right hand and the hand sweating gets ridiculous after a while.

Yeah, I think you either have to get a really nice jogging stroller designed for your height, or just don't run with a stroller at all.   I agree that running with an empty stroller is an odd move unless you are sneaking in booze to an outdoor concert.

The lactic acid that builds in your shoulders is no joke.
Honestly that wasn't bad at all.

It just ####s with my stride too much. And I can't run with both hands on it, so it's an hour trying to keep it straight with one hand while it's hot and sweaty.

It's not a bad jogging stroller but it's not fun.

Oh, I completely forgot.

The watch has a metronome for those that want to work on their cadence.

It's like it was made just for me.

Ran solo with a stroller for the first time today.

FYI -- It sucks.
What did you get for a Stroller?  We went all in and got a Bob.  Toughest money to drop at the time because it seemed overkill.  Bought new for $600 and sold four years later for $400.  Used the #### out of that thing, smooth ride on road and trails, and not a single problem.  Easily worth the $50/year it cost us.  You could buy used and spend even less, and I think worth the small investment.  Just my .02.

There he is. How’s Superior training going?

I’m like a shadow in here, but one which runs very little. ;)

On top of work, my wife started back into school full time for three years this past fall to get her Doctorate of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner License. To say I’ve had less free time would be a bit of an understatement.   :lmao:

I’m still going to give it hell at Superior, but just may not be as well conditioned as I had hoped this year.  Also, unfortunately looking like we may not be making the trip out west to do Beaverhead in July which is a bit of a bummer.

But you’re killin’ it, as usual! That’s awesome.  I’ve been living vicariously through all of you guys!  Keep on crushing it, and keep the posts coming...

Appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, my wife looked at a Bob. I don't remember if that's what we ended up getting or not. This was like 4-5 years ago and before I was running.  I'll check when I get home.  It's not a bad jogging stroller, honestly.

But, at this point, our youngest is almost 4 so not much time left for use. Yesterday was more of a one off thing as my wife was working and I wanted to get out and had her at home. Normally, we can try to find time to run while the other is home or they are at school.
