Ran a 10k - Official Thread (14 Viewers)

Well, time to put up or shut up this weekend:

--Weather for Sunday morning at 7am as of right now -- 35 degrees, sunny, 5 mph winds heading west (direction of the last 2-3 miles).

--Elite runner pacing me

-- Weight at 193

-- No work tonight so will be rested and have eaten well this week

First time thinking about this race and getting a little anxious.  Not listing any goals here.  Will just see what happens.  Can go here for runner tracking

:oldunsure:

P.S. --

I'm pretty ####### enthusiastic about this race]

Looking forward to hearing about it!  Eat seven chicken breasts on Saturday night, two bowls of rice on Sunday morning, and you'll be all set.

No goals?!???

ok.  I predict a 4:55 per mile pace.  If you don’t achieve it, i’m blaming your pacer.

I didn't think there was tracking for my race, but apparently I was wrong. This is a small group that puts this race on, so I have no idea the quality to expect from their tracking.

Forecast according to wunderground is 34 partly cloudy w/7-10 mph winds. Local forecasters are less optimistic though. They're saying clearing skies for the day, but that 'lingering stuff' will be around in the morning. Regardless - positive spin, the wind will be mostly behind the beginning of the race so I won't be quite as cold at the start. Negative spin, it'll mostly be a head wind for the final 5K.

One thing I may do differently v. the race 2 weeks ago is start off with sleeves then disrobe to a tank sometime mid-race and use hand warmer's instead of gloves - keeping the gloves stashed in my pockets as a reserve. Gonna test out the hand warmer's on tomorrow's shake out run in comparable conditions and see how it goes.

Plan A - around 6 flat miles 1-3.X (down wind), if I can comfortably stay well under 6:10 miles 3.X-6.6 that'd be ideal (head wind) but don't force the issue, re-assess at that point based on actual wind impact, how I'm feeling, and competitors. I may adjust on the fly before then if I have rabbits and drafters, but it's not something I'm going to think about until I actually see them in the race. I didn't cross reference vs. prior race results and weather in too much detail, but there are usually a couple-few that are well under an hour 20 then a steady stream of them immediately after an hour 20. So I'm cautiously optimistic I can find someone with the same hour 20 goal, use them, then hope I have the juice to negative split the last 5K. If I don't then I stick to my splits plan.

Driving cross town to pick up my packet in a few minutes. Local brewery has set up shop there and is giving away free beers too. Not a bad lunch, huh.  :banned:

All while holding your phone?   :loco:   I'm tellin' ya, basic brown garden gloves with the ends of the fingers cut off is the best/gangsta way to go.  That makes it easy to rip open gels, grab water cups, check watch screens, reposition long dongs, whatever.

Flavor of dum-dum?

Nah, it's either gloves or hand warmer's. Not both. If I chose gloves then I think I can change my phone settings to 'always be on,' so I don't need to mess around with swiping anything while running.

So, if @gruecd is pacing this thing and needs to stop and take a dump at mile 6, is @gianmarco supposed to stand outside the door of the porta-potty and wait? Maybe jog in place to stay warm?
Actually had this happen to me once when I was pacing a marathon. Handed my sign to one of the runners in my group, handled my business, then took off at about 6-minute pace until I caught back up with them.

Racing in 34F? I'd go long sleeve baselayer and nothing on hands.  Pull down sleeves to cover hands if they get cold.   I think hand warmers are going to be annoying esp. if you are carrying your phone.   Or pick up dollar store stretch knit gloves and toss em if you don't need em.

Plan C - thought of that earlier this week. Not going to give it any thought until after the shakeout test tomorrow though. If the hand warmer's fail I'll weigh the logistics of the $1 store gloves or my usual's.

The problem I have with long sleeves in those conditions is I know I will get too warm, which will be bad later in the race. I think it was @gruecd that mentioned a similar problem before, but I know my hands are an issue. If they get cold then everything else falls apart. Ideally I repeat what I did 2 weeks ago, just dump a hoodie at the line 30 seconds before start, and roll with the tank-only. We'll see just how biting that wind is and if we're looking at 50% cloud cover, 80%, stuff falling from the sky, or somewhere in between. I think I need to prepare for multiple options, but also be decisive on whatever direction I choose that morning.

Lotta in's, lotta out's, lotta what have you's.

Yeah, pretty positive I've got (at least a mild case of) Raynaud's.  My hands are super sensitive to the cold, and they often turn white after prolonged exposure.  I'll race in a tank even when temps are in the upper 20s or lower 30s, but I wear gloves even with temps in the 40s.

You should make a sign and carry it for the race Sunday. Just for Yan.
The funniest part of that whole story was watching all the 3:40-3:45 marathoners look at me like "WTF" when I came flying past them in my haste to catch up.

I had never heard of that until it was mentioned in here recently but I've fully convinced I have that issue too. My fingertips will turn colors and go numb and it doesn't take that cold of temps to happen.

We're going to look awfully funny next to each other with you in a tank and me in 6 layers of wool.

Jesus I'm so fat and out of shape.

Ran 1 mile this morning.

Ran 1 tonight with my daughter, I could barely make it

I'm not going to worry about times until I can do 2 miles regularly

Sunday afternoon Strava titles:

Me:  "Hot Chocolate 15K Race -- Huge PR!!!  Almost died"

Grue:  " Sunday morning recovery run.  Legs felt a little sluggish"
I know you dont want to throw out a goal...but I'm curious how this MAF thing translates to the race.  Do you run by HR or is there like a calculation that gives you an expected pace? (it doesnt look like you've let it fly in your recent runs)

I’m trying the MAF thing - 6+ hilly miles today.  Had to go so damn slow and then on some bigger hills walk.  I’m going to stick with it because I have no reason not to but I didn’t enjoy it.

Nope. I usually run shirtless no matter the temps. Just shorts, shoes, headband, and gloves, nothing else. No liners or drawers either. But anything below 60, and I wear gloves. Was 48 on Monday or Wednesday, and I got some crazy looks from people in the neighborhood because I was shirtless. Started out with a long sleeve but was burning up half a mile in and dumped it. I’ve come a long way, fellas.

I'm curious too.

First time trying this. I've never raced without doing some kind of plan and some speed workouts.

So I don't know what kind of pace in capable of right now. Apparently @gruecd does and is going to let me know. I was planning on running by HR but I don't think he's going to give a #### about me HR.

That said, without having run fast for a long time, the couple times recently I've tried to some faster paces, it wasn't as hard as I expected it would be. Whether I can sustain it is another story.

Alright, alright, alright ...
