Ran a 10k - Official Thread (2 Viewers)

So noob running question here

I've been reading a lot of different takes and figure I'd get some insight here...

As stated I'm very out of shape running wise - like the worst I ever been. Gone are the days of running all day....

So I wanted to start slwo like I've been to try to limit injuries and work my way into a program

My plan is each week add a little more distance until I can run 3 miles (even if its an 11 minute pace) but I dont need to stop to rest....

At that time start to work on times...

I've read it may be better to work on times earlier.

I'm no where near trying to push anything - I'm just curious if I should try to get faster at say 2 miles vs getting to 5K then trying to better times.

tia
I would run slow and add distance versus trying to run shorter runs faster.

Ok, being the social planner, here's what we've got so far for Jack and Jill in July, 2020.

-- @gianmarco

-- Mrs. @gianmarco (because she doesn't know it yet)

-- @JShare87 (because he promised he'd come run it with me if I did this)

-- @gruecd (because he's never been to Washington and needs to pace my wife for BQ)

-- @bushdocda (because he has to visit a friend and just decided when he should go)

-- @ChiefD (because he needs to BQ for 2021 before he gets too old)

Ty.. that's been my plan since the start all 3 weeks :)
I asked this exact same question when I first started.  They all the same thing.  I listened and it was 100% accurate.  Within 2 months, I went from not being able to run more than a mile to running a solid 5K for my first race.

When you're finally able to run 3 miles, go run 4 miles.

For the record, my BQ post earlier was clearly in jest. There is no way I'm qualifying for this race anytime soon.

...and I did not listen, so it took me 4 years to figure out how to effectively train for a race vs. the 2 months it took you.

My feet have been hurting more than usual lately so I went and got my feet scanned to try and get a better feel on what I need to be putting my feet in.  Since @Zasada shared his smaller than normal girthed appendages ( :P ) I thought I would throw mine out too https://my.volumental.com/en/fleet_feet/e3745b2e-7f51-415b-8a91-769d5f82ae8e/?utm_medium=myvemail

I have super high arches and an overall shorter and fatter right foot.  After trying several shoes, and inserts I'm now in NB 880s (wide) with the highest arched insert they had.  I'm hoping this helps me out, b/c the last couple of days have sucked (not coincidentally, this also occurred with my increased cadence and striking mid foot with not enough support instead of on my heel).
I must've missed Z's scan... this is the first I'm seeing this.  looks pretty awesome.

I'll see your arch height and raise you some.

I will absolutely run this again.

If you have a Fleet Feet around you, it is super quick/easy (assuming they have the scanner).  It was helpful to know how high my arch was and that the front of my feet are proportionally fatter than my heel versus the typical person.  Allowed them to pick out some shoes to try on and an appropriate insert --- hopefully it helps, they feel good while sitting at my desk.

Odds that I can PR a 10K on Thursday morning then turn around and do the same at a half marathon on Sunday?

Or should I prioritize one or the other?

You've mentioned your half PR is soft, so you could do it anyway but you won't be recovered from the 10K. I'd pick one or the other. But as someone who will just be watching it'd serve as some quality entertainment while I get fat this week.

As long as I’m healthy, I plan to enter the edge of that pain/insanity threshold that @gianmarco went to for my Turkey Trot. What is a realistic goal to shoot for? I think 18:52 is my PR. Not sure that’s possible.

My new balances that were posted earlier just showed up. Man they are way more comfortable in the ball of my foot then my other runners.

As always I border between standard and wide so these a little snug but nice.

Thanks

The Zante Pursuit? Great shoe!!!

Ok, so um, I just pitched the idea to her and she didn't throw something at me.  She just listened.  And then started asking questions about weather there and when is it, etc.

Uh, you guys have taught me well.  I think I caught a big one.  We may be doing this puppy......

Let me know ASAP. I’ve been wanting to get back. It is beautiful that time of year.

So here is a question for the experienced guys. Lets say I decided to enter than marathon in July in Washington.

I am doing the Hanson half marathon training plan for my April 4 marathon. So that marathon would then be July 25.  So about 15 weeks later. So would I basically startup Hansons right away again, and just use the first 3 weeks of that training cycle doing only the short easy runs. And then ramp up to the hard workouts?

Or would I need to modify the plan somewhat so I don’t burn myself out doing a Hanson plan basically 30 weeks straight.

Somewhat similar to what I’m doing now. Why not run the April marathon as a long training run? That way you can get your BQ in Washington with the rest of the crew!

I would need a 3:25 minus probably 4 or 5 minutes to qualify. That ain’t happening. But I appreciate your thoughts. If this were in 2021 - maybe.

Remind me - is it normal, before taper, to find every ####### thing annoying?  Like things that really shouldn't.  This is a first for me, and it sucks.

Trust me, I know the struggle. Sub 3 is not possible. I thought they moved all the times up so people didn’t have to beat the time by 4-5 minutes?

You have the speed to run sub 3 one day, it’s just a question whether your body can withstand the training cycle after cycle.

I would defer this question to at least sometime in February. Decide then which race takes priority then plan accordingly. If you're trending towards an April PR then go for it. If you're not then re-assess, consider taking the foot off the gas, sustain the quantity but back off on the quality, treat April as a training run, then restart Hanson at week 4 April 11. But also realize that peak Jack and Jill training will be happening in June/early July.

I found myself clicking on the politics forum more the last few weeks, so I was actively seeking out opportunities to get annoyed. It's in the taper's DNA, before and during.

Mrs BD for a second thought the half ‘looked pretty’ then decided she’d drink wine instead. I can discuss more seriously in a couple weeks after upcoming race (gotta get back to making up more pace scenarios) and after Berlin lottery (super slim chance) is announced in the next week or two.

Edit - this doesn’t read positive but it is. Very likely doable.

It’s a lot but the HM training will get you fit AF and you could race, recover, couple easy weeks and pick up the marathon plan wherever you are and make it work IMO.  That half training is no joke but nice thing is it will make goal marathon pace seem easier.
