Ran a 10k - Official Thread (16 Viewers)

FarmGuys -- ran by a gigantic pile of root vegetables today, but don't know what kind.  If they were potatoes, they were the biggest I've ever seen (bigger than my fist for sure, probably even bigger than @Otis' as well).  Any experts able to ID (photos on Strava)?
Looks like a potato to me.

Moose balls?

Why do I do this sport again?

I had a really good training month in October -  3 days on, 1 day off pattern and lot of good, fast miles.  Close to the best shape I've been in running wise in last few years.    September steroid injection seemed to work well.  Sometime in mid-November I experienced some micro strains in the hamstring and the knee was a little off.  I rested and tried to come back last week, but man oh man my calf is in bad shape.  The rest has allowed the tears/strains/soreness and other muscle crap to heal (I can now walk, jump etc. with no noticeable issues), but the area near that joint is still incredibly tender amid 1 run in the last 2 weeks.  I'm guessing that the magic of the injections is starting to wane.  grrr.

I've gone to the gym the past 3 days and done elliptical and walking on the treadmill.  It's OK, but it's no fun looking at the elapsed time and seeing that only 7 seconds have gone by since the last time I checked my time.  Not looking forward to this path, but it might be one of few options.

Next steps are back to my ortho for a surgery referral in early 2020.  Not sure what I'll do, but I'm approaching with an open mind.

France was one of the earliest countries to grow sugar beet, and in 2016, it produced 382,858 ha in 10 of its northern regions to supply sugar and ethanol/alcohol. France is a top producer of sugar beet with average of over 88 tonnes of root yield ha⁻¹ and 13.7 tonnes sugar ha⁻¹.Jul 13, 2019
By the way, the taste has...

been compared to a white potato that's been sprinkled with sugar
Might sugar beet shots be a sweet, magic running elixir? Finally, my million dollar idea?

Man this week looks to be totally lost. I hope it doesn't set me back but it doesn't look like I can get a run in until Saturday...

M-F out the door at 5:30 am and not getting home until 8:30 or so.   I'm spent right now.

Hope to at least get a walk in tomorrow

Well FWIW all I get to see is the airport, an airport hotel, and conference rooms.  The highlight of the trip is the tiny village near the airport I ran to/through.

Honestly, your ability to stay positive as you have is truly extraordinary.  I have a bad week of running and I'm a mess mentally and here you are still battling YEARS later.

Kudos to you and your positivity.

I wish I knew the answer to your problems.  I just hope you can keep getting out there and keep enjoying this stupid sport.

Thanks GB. I'm one of the few%of people that actually enjoys running for running sake, so it doesn't feel like much of a struggle to strive to run. But not knowing if the current run will be your last one ever does breed a strange mental state with it for sure.

over the years i've just tolerated dry skin in winter. but it's getting worse as i age. showering before work, then running after work and showering again is just... .killing me.  i'm so dry that a stiff wind might blow furley particles in to oblivion.

how are you guys handling dry skin? are you going full body moisturizer?

i'd run in the morning and then shower but my schedule is ####ed the last year plus so it's not currently possible

Got a nice bruise on the back of my leg from my pulled hammy in the 5K. Was able to do 14 today without it hurting too much. I have a naturally short stride and don’t use my hamstrings much for slow runs.

Yeah, about this time of year, I need to use lotion/moisturizer after showering or I'll be scratchy for hours afterwards.  I do try to pat dry instead of pulling the towel too firmly across the skin.

A worthwhile read

You're a tough s.o.b. but a bruise is often a sign of a tear.
Thanks. That’s why I said I’ve been down this road before. Torn my hamstring plenty of times playing football. As for the article, I appreciate it and agree with most of what it says. I’ve assumed that all my issues are further up the chain (my back). That’s why all the issues with my right leg continue to pop up.

I have little to no glute/hamstring strength on that side because of my nerve issue. I’ve tried single leg strengthening and it seems to help. But there are some things I just can’t do because of the nerve. It’s not painful or a lack of strength, just the nerve not firing and my leg not working properly sometimes.

I feel a lot like @Brony in a sense because I am in constant pain. I love running but know I can’t keep this up for too long. It seems like right when I’m at my pervious peak of fitness, I can’t pass that threshold into another one because of injuries. I’ll continue to try and get through this cycle, but I have a feeling it’s coming to an end shortly. That 20 miler a week and a half ago was amazing but took a lot out of me. Then the 5K wasn’t the best idea so that set me back a few days as well. At the end of my 14 miler today, I was shot. Morale of all this rambling? Nerve issues are serious. Just ask a doctor.

I hear ya.  Keep waiting for that one time when everything works out.

Maybe I'll get a Peloton, but I don't think I have the bod for it.

My renewed emphasis on stretching and rolling seems to be paying off.  My leg is still bothering me some but not a lot and overall my legs and back are feeling much better.

And seeing as that’s the case I’m going to start upping my mileage - @gianmarco, up yours!

Moved into a bigger office today (humble brag), which meant cleaning out all of my desk drawers and filing cabinets.  There's something really liberating about throwing a bunch of #### away.

Also, because I have a very busy day today, I was up at 4am and out the door at 4:30 to run.  My body hates running that early, but my mind is at its absolute best.  The run went super quick because my brain was occupied the whole time thinking about stuff...

Do the copper braces/sleeves really work? Always seemed kind of gimmicky to me.
I'm skeptical of the copper stuff.  ( @gruecd, remember the RnR HM expo 10-12 years ago with Greg?  They had those copper wrist bands that I think you both tried.)

A compression sleeve, OTOH, could be beneficial.  I hadn't seen one before that's targeted for the quads/hammies.

No, up yours.

Forget if you’ve run some of the Rehoboth course @pbm107, threw some observations together...I’ll shoot you a message but it’s looking like we’ll arrive after your dinner reservation.

Weather looking clear as of now with start around 33* and a NNW wind.  I am no wind expert but that seems preferable to anything coming off the ocean.  I’d guess it’s at our back first ~half and more into us coming back to Rehoboth.

Miles 1-3 From start at bandstand by boardwalk, out through main drag and right out residential street to Ocean Drive

4 -5 crushed gravel starts here, go around Gordons Pond, likely the most wind exposed and if coming off the sea this is where we eat it

6 – 8 Henlopen Park, on a flat course one of 2 mention-worthy elevation increases will be in mile 6 short uphill section, I think the gravel ends just prior to here and paved trail starts, mile 7 looks like it might include a hill/deadend type water stop

9 – 11 out and back from the park down Cape Henlopen Drive, around Dairy Queen and back to the park

12 – 17 veer right on different trail in the park with the other noteworthy short uphill to the Lookout Tower, gravel picks up again a bit thereafter and around Gordons Pond again back to Ocean Drive

18 - 19 residential streets with a few turns before hitting gravel trail

20 – 24 out and back on Junction and Breakwater trail, this can be rutty and I expect it might be a bit crowded depending on how things spread out

25-26.2 back to streets and some turns on the way to finish
Your post is helpful, but so was this oldie but goodie. I forget what is your goal time?

On my end I have no idea what to expect as I didn't train for this distance and haven't run any long runs.  My long run for the year is 16 miles and I only did that twice.  I'll be wearing a 3:05 pace band to try to get a BQ, but realistically all I can control is getting to the half as close to 1:32:30 as possible.   After that who knows what's going to happen.

Oh #### need to focus read that later. That’s gold, thanks to you (and @Ned 😃). I’ll get my goal and thoughts up tonight.

I’m  :excited:
