Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

I didn't spend a lot of time looking, I didn't call any stores or anything, but the closest store that reports on their website to have them in stock was 20 miles from me.
Yeah, the store that I was going to go to (and I have a gift certificate there) doesn't appear to have them in stock either.  Thanks for the warning.

About 20 years ago, we got the worst of the worst when it comes to snow... started out as the powdery stuff that is pretty easy to shovel, especially if you stay ahead of it and don't wait until there's a foot of it to start. Guess who waited and we literally got a foot of it or more. But that isn't the end of it... after it finished falling, it then proceeded to start this icy rain and the foot of powdery stuff turned into the the wet stuff AND ended up with about a 2 inch layer of ice on top of the snow! I spent all day trying to clear off my garage - had to use a metal one something like this to break up the ice and then chuck it from the driveway to the yard and then shovel the wettest, thickest, heaviest load of snow ever. It was brutal!

Since then I have never waited for the snow to finish before starting to shovel my driveway - shoveling 2, 3, or even 4 times when it is a little bit at a time is far better than 1 time when you wait too long!

This is the dirty little secret with shoveling. Whenever we expect heavy snow myself and the kids are out there at least that many times. Much easier to push two inches of snow than trying to shovel 12" of snow in one session.

Not if you own a snow blower@#@!#

And its time for me to post my shovel collection tonight!@#!@

Question - do pick axes count?

I've given a lot of thought to the snowblower. My three kids are 14,12, and 9. Perfect snow shoveling age. They each have their own shovel. So the snowblower will wait a bit til I get older.

As far as the pick-axe, I do not have one of those. Have never had an occasion to use one. But if I ever do, you can be damn sure I'll get one.

The pick axe is an invaluable tool - particularly if you are working with rocky soil, imo. And as fun as you can imagine to swing around too! A true manly man tool.

Shovel #1

This shovel will do it all. The steel blade is perfect for all scenarios. This is the workhorse. Has a hardwood handle. Is a little heavier than most shovels but that weight is what gives you the power to dig into less-than-ideal snow scenarios. If I'm buying only one shovel, this is the guy.
Shovel #1 is out of stock online and not available for store pickup. Walmart appears to have the same shovel available with the same part # in the title 1640700, but the fine print shows is actually a 1640900. Are we safe to go with the 1640900?

Yeah, it's good.

True Temper uses both of those manufacturer numbers at various stores. It is the same shovel.

Thanks, purchased shovel #1. I have a snow blower but it is good to have a backup plan. My current shovel is one of those bent handle ones (not a fan) that my wife purchased.

Wait, you have a cabin? Where?

Why haven't we had:

The Iguana 10 Mile Trail Run Around My Cabin Followed By Drinking Beer And Playing Poker Race Event
It's quite rustic but very capable for all that - also plenty of fishing nearby for you. I'll be staying there when I do my trail run in March.

So my snow shovel mix is:

"#1" ...a standard snow shovel, but with an ergonomic (kind of S-shaped) design.  Very light weight.  Love the ergonomic design.

"#2" ...a wide snow pusher, but it's an old metal blade with a heavy wooden shaft.  In fact, this morning, I had to drill through where the shaft meets the metal blade structure to install a new nut n' bolt.  The metal is very worn down, but it still has a consistent edge.

With a couple of light inches of snow this morning, I just used the snow pusher as it covers more ground.  It's heavy, due to the wood and metal, but that's not an issue when the snow is light.  Actually got in a good abductor/adductor workout on the sidewalks - side step left, side step right as I push the snow to the right and toss; side step left to reset, etc.

For bigger snows, I'll use the snow pusher first to condense the snow toward the edge of the driveway and sidewalk (lots of sidewalk; corner lot), then I'll use the light, ergonomic shovel to lift/toss the snow.

Failed long run. But, the actual reason is pretty epic. Report upcoming in a little bit....
So......

Wife and I were planning a long run for this week.  She was off for most of the week, it's 1 month before the HM, and figured this would be a great time to go for the 20 mile run.  So the plan was at least 18, hopefully 20.  Luckily the "winter storm" never really hit us hard, only had some ice yesterday and nothing overnight, so today wasn't bad other than a little cold and windy.

We decided to drive to the main park here that we've run lots of times.  It's 5.5 miles around, so practice getting nutrition every park lap, stopping at the car and doing a GU and some water after each lap. 3 full laps plus another 3.5 mile loop that I know and boom, 20 miles.  Plus, it allows the chance to abort if needed.  Picked up a few different GUs to try them out.  Had pancakes this morning, got the kids out to school, and then back home to prepare for the run.  Drank plenty of water all morning, ate an apple, did the band aids and body glide, loaded up the car, and headed out.  Everything was all going well.

Got started with our run and I was feeling great.  Legs felt perfect, HR was nice and low, and we decided to keep it nice and slow as it was just about getting the time and distance done.  First lap very uneventful.  Got the first GU in, got some water.  Had to stop to pee about a mile later and then was feeling even better.  Until.......

We get past the 9 mile mark and I started to just feel funny.  Looked down and my HR is like 132.  That's not it.  My legs feel good.  But I felt like I was floating.  And after a minute or so I realized that there's nothing really wrong other than the fact that I'm feeling really hungry.  At that same moment, my wife goes "you know, I'm getting really hungry".  And then I looked at my watch and I realized it's like approaching 1pm.  The problem was we normally go to run right after dropping our youngest off and get started by 9:30-10am and finish by noon.  We didn't get started until 11am and we ate breakfast at 7am.  Just really didn't think about it.

At this point, we're both realizing that 20 just isn't going to happen.  We figured we'll get to the car and call it a day and drive to lunch.  Except I'm realizing we are REALLY hungry.  My wife is craving a burger.  I'm craving something similar.  It's also close to where we used to live and there's a neighborhood restaurant with awesome burgers and sandwiches and wings.  I tell her that it'll just be faster if we run there than run to the car and drive somewhere.  And then I realized that when we get there, we're going to have to wait for the food.  So we stopped running so I could call the restaurant and place our order and then finished our run making a beeline to the restaurant.

That's it.  20 miles impossible today because we were hungry.  Everything else felt just fine.  So we aborted, got there and had our food within a couple minutes and polished it off as if we hadn't eaten in days.  Ran the final 1.5 miles to the car and drove home.

We'll try again sometime, but definitely earlier in the morning.

Not epic. No poop or acorns.

Yeah, I know number of calories is going to be the biggest issue. I just want bang for the buck. I can shove a mashed up jam/honey sandwich in my mouth in one bite. It won't be pretty, but who cares.

I've never liked GUs. The chews are OK, but I'd rather feel more satisfied. I'm thinking occasional handful of raisins, Banana at 5, sandwich at 10, banana at 15, sandwich at 20. 4 ziplocks tucked into the flipbelt.  Hit every water station.

The one thing I'm interested in looking into that I've seen some of you mention is Tailwind. But not sure it's even necessary.

Doesn't bother me at all. I've been chomping on an apple a few times already without a problem. Usually takes me a mile to finish it.
Hmmm....

I've tried a GU once before but it was a long time ago when I first started and didn't like it.  Never tried it again.  Figured I'd try that first for portability and see how it works.  I actually liked it today and don't mind giving it a go.  When we give our long run a shot again, we're just going to make sure we start no later than 9amish so that we're done around lunch time.  We've already done runs of 13-15 miles and not had an issue other than being hungry when we were done. Of course, we started earlier on and didn't have to run as long as what we planned today.  I could have gone another few miles, but not another 10.

Really?!  Man, that just doesn't compute in my mind.  I run when I'm hungry a lot of times, so it's hard to envision calling off a long run mid-run due to hunger. But if you both had an itch to shovel in some grub, more power to ya.  Hopefully you'll get back out soon enough for a productive long run.

hey bro if you may or may not know that if you show up to the cabin there's no guarantee you come back from the cabin

I'm pretty sure I started the thread for people to buy this or not
Ha - didn't know there was a thread about it.  When we bought our first house, the previous homeowners left it in the shed.  It made the move with us to the next house

as some of you might have noticed I haven't really run in a while my schedule's been crazy the last few weeks so I have been getting out for my butt walks but also after I ran those four miles my knee hurt bad for a good two to three weeks I feel pretty good now but the weather's kind of s***** and I don't really want to run in s***** weather so I got that going for me

That's what's crazy about today.  If I had heard someone give that reason, I would have though it was ridiculous.

Now, my wife truly has something wrong with her when it comes to hunger.  She gets angry and emotional and can't do anything if it's time for her to eat.  She's like a toddler in that sense and is the epitome of the definition of "hangry".  She can't control it either.  I joke with her about it, but it's real and it's scary at times.  That said, we've been on countless runs and it's never been an issue.  Sure, she'll get hungry toward the end, but that's about it.  The problem here was that there was still almost 2 hours to go.

But, I will also say that I felt a very different kind of hunger than usual for me.  I don't ever get "hangry".  I've gone plenty of times where I'm hungry (whether traveling or working or whatever) where I'm not able to get food for a long time and I'm just fine.  I've waited hours and can still function without a problem.  I've run hungry as well.  Today was something strange in that the desire and need to eat something was stronger than I normally feel at any time.  You combine that with her feeling the same way and you get today's results.  It was so bad that it would have been difficult to wait the extra 20 minutes to drive somewhere and eat.  I don't even know how to describe it.

I wonder if having the GU had anything to do with it, especially since we started feeling it at the same time.  Has a GU ever made you hungry or anything like that?

We're planning on getting back out there either Saturday or Sunday to try again.  If that doesn't work, it'll be soon.  We learned a few things today so all was not lost.  Plus, my HR was ridiculously low for 10 miles, even though it was a slower pace.  A HR of 133 for mile 10 for me and a sub 10 minute pace?  Never come close to that before.

-1C/30F this morning.  20mph winds out of the northeast.  And I didn't pack gloves.  Felt like @JShare87 out there.

Except for the 7:30/mi pace.

And the crazy mileage.

As well as the long, flowing locks that create a string of hot, squealing women trailing him on his runs.
This happens when I travel a lot.  I just use socks as gloves and it works out okay (as long as it isn't bitterly cold).

...for 10 miles ...
Let's not overlook the fact that you're talking about some disappointment even though you ran an excellent 10 friggin' miles!  You're transitioning to that point when, in some casual conversation, a civilian asks how long your run was, you respond  :coffee:   "just 10."

Has anyone here ever used Zwift for running?

Looks like the Garmin watch just got an update to do virtual runs connected with Zwift.  It seems if you get the Zwift footpod ($40), you can run on any treadmill and it'll work with Zwift, which is free (I think?)?  You just download it on a tablet/iPad/TV or whatever that you set on or in front of your treadmill and you can run virtual routes.

Anyone here used it or have experience? Might make treadmill running a little more bearable.
