Doesn’t sound fat and out of shape to me.Ran a frosty 5 miler on Sunday in about 25-30 degree weather for my first outdoor run of the year. I’m fat and out of shape so I just want be finish under 9:00 per. Finished at 8:53 and was pleased since it was a hilly course and slippery as hell since it was icy/rainy
Thanks.@ChiefD, that was some good squishy tonight.
This is me right now. There isn't any sense stressing about it, but I will all day anyway. I can't do an 80-90 minute run over lunch, so the earliest I can get out is 4:30-4:45 or thereabouts. Will the weather hold off until after 6? I don't know, but this is my only chance at anything of consequence between now and Sunday. Wish me luck.Glad the weather held off so I could run that outside.
Of course that's the case - you're not fit yet. You're supposed to be running uncomfortable right now. The objective is for the current work to eventually become 'comfortable.'To be honest, based on my fitness right now, 7:36 is going to be a challenge.
Yeah, I'm at that point where I said the same thing last year.Of course that's the case - you're not fit yet. You're supposed to be running uncomfortable right now. The objective is for the current work to eventually become 'comfortable.'
Good luck. Our snow is starting literally right now and we should have 4" on the ground before I drive home from work today. Luckily today is a rest day for me, so a fire and the Jayhawks game and a cold beer is on the horizon for tonight. This is me right now. Hopefully we're getting 6". If it's less it's because temp's warm enough over night for some ice. But the bigger problem may be after this comes through - arctic air is coming down and bringing lake effect snow with it. It could be worse, these two systems could have joined together, but it's going to be a mess from tonight until the winds shift either Friday night or Saturday morning. If we just get snow I may be able to easy run tomorrow in between storms, but that'll be the only safe opportunity to get out over these next 48+ hours.Good luck. Agreed. When my calf tightened up again yesterday, my first thought was that I'd need to rest and let it recover. My second thought was that a low mileage week or two on Strava would be staring at me for the next fifty two weeks. The downside of strava - the data. The current hammy injury dictates rest and all I can think about is "but my stats!" After getting off to such a great start to the year, it's going to be painful to watch the running miles stay stationary for some number of days!
FYPGood luck. Our snow is starting literally right now and we should have 4" on the ground before I drive home from work today. Luckily today is a rest day for me, so a fire and the Jayhawks loss and a cold beer is on the horizon for tonight.
That is indeed possible with that Neanderthal brand of
I didn't see the game but other than being low scoring, it seems to have had the three things that make these games fun.Glad I missed that game. 58-49, woof.
You're welcome. You guys suck. And rule. At the same time.
I can't even hardly bear to log into this site and click on this page right now. Have a 5k in a couple of weeks that my goal was "20 minutes or bust" - that likely seems out the window, especially since I have to be ready for the trail run in a month. Really pretty bummed these days and the tightness in my leg is a constant reminder to be smart - working on stretching and other things to improve it but going out to run right now would just be dumb. You guys suck. And rule. At the same time.
This 2,500mi goal has me obsessed. I put it into Strava (4,024km), and now every time I log in, I see how I'm progressing against that goal. As if I wasn't OCD about it enough, already. I take one day off yesterday (pouring rain, and I needed a day off anyway) and all day I'm lamenting that I took what was a 14km buffer and turned it into a 3km buffer (YTD pace vs goal).
I'm not sure I can take another 300+ days of this. The running part seems secondary right now. It's the mental aspect that's driving me nuts.
In other news, the butt continues to improve (it seems keeping long runs to a minimum, but running more days, is helping). Fitness is improving. Garmin VO2Max now up to 57! Eager to get back north this weekend and onto the trails.

Make an appointment with either a masseuse or chiro/sports doc. You'll probably leave with a better idea what's up with your leg. Sure, the answer probably involves not racing anytime soon, but mentally having a (tentative?) diagnosis and timeline will help. Believe me, you do not want to #### around with a hammy. If you don't treat it properly the first time it will linger, worsen, and...well, never go away.I can't even hardly bear to log into this site and click on this page right now. Brb.You may try this workout.
It's easy on the hamstrings but still gets your HR up enough to be in MAF zone so you can get some benefits out of it.

Next cool milestone: The distance around the Earth at the Equator, its circumference, is 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles).Speaking of mileage I reached a milestone this morning, 20,000 miles.
That is pretty cool, I am looking forward to telling my kids that.Next cool milestone: The distance around the Earth at the Equator, its circumference, is 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles).
I will be puuuuuuusssying it up on the treadmill tonight. Not looking forward to getting out there soon....Gray, teens, and winds of 17-20 mph (windchill was -1 just a little bit ago).....

Speaking of mileage I reached a milestone this morning, 20,000 miles.
Hopefully I have 40,000 more in me.
- # runs 2532
- Average distance/run 7.9 miles
- Time spend running 2726 hours 58 minutes (113.62 days)
- Average pace 8:11
- Average HR 141
- Calories burned 2,153,128

Another dimension, relevant for the ultra-marathoners ( @SFBayDuck, et al): It's 100km (62 miles) to outer space.Next cool milestone: The distance around the Earth at the Equator, its circumference, is 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles).
Looks like I timed this up well, plows just came through and we're just getting flurries between now and when the arctic front comes through late afternoon - 31/wind chill 22 right now. Next planned run isn't til Saturday and if I get my way I'll get sun and high 20's, missing all of this negative wind chill noise. Not looking forward to getting out there soon....Gray, teens, and winds of 17-20 mph (windchill was -1 just a little bit ago).....

Speaking of cool milestone, anyone doing the North Pole Marathon? Only 4KM to 'circle' the earth.Next cool milestone: The distance around the Earth at the Equator, its circumference, is 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles).
Yup, I don't want to injure myself post-ultra in pursuit of this arbitrary goal. What I'm hoping is that I can bank some buffer pre-Ultra (killing two birds with one stone), which will buy me a nice recovery post-ultra.You’ve got an ultra upcoming, yes, so packing in volume now is great for that goal. But recovery from that will be way more important than weekly mileage/where you stand vs annual mileage goal.
My stomach wasn't too thrilled with it when I tried it years ago (maybe it was the fiber), but I also think my stomach is stronger now than it used to be. I may give this a shot again. But fair warning - don't expect texture to maintain. So if that's a thing with you...well, you've been warned.Back to some race nutrition, I noticed/found something in my work lounge the other night that might be a perfect compromise for what I'm looking for. Brought a few home and going to give it a try.
Nutrigrain bar
It's pretty portable (not much larger than a package of gels), soft and easy to eat (nothing to get stuck in @tri-man 47's teeth), taste decent, have a lot of the same nutritional things as other race fuel, and would satisfy the "hunger" or wanting to actually eat something feeling. I don't know how bad the fat/fiber that's in them would be, but can't imagine it would be that bad.

I wanna do the World Marathon Challenge, 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. But it's like $43K. Maybe if I get an inheritance someday...Speaking of cool milestone, anyone doing the North Pole Marathon? Only 4KM to 'circle' the earth.

I don't really follow along in the other threads, so I don't get the schtick. Sorry. Who's Chet, and why would I PM him?PM Chet

I had the same thoughts as you - I was just hungry after 12 or 13 miles with 5 more to go. After a bite or two I was done. I didn't want to chew it, didn't feeling like swallowing it, and my stomach pretty much rejected it. I didn't puke, but it was a very uncomfortable 5 miles til I got home.
Thanks for the feedback and I'll definitely be careful. My stomach wasn't too thrilled with it when I tried it years ago (maybe it was the fiber), but I also think my stomach is stronger now than it used to be. You go, girl. Thanks for the feedback and I'll definitely be careful.
That said, I just ate one before my run and nailed it. Coincidence? Didn't bother me in the least. Cold and windy AF, decided to do some hills and the more I ran, the stronger I felt. What was only going to be 6-7 miles turned into 10 miles. At a sub 9 pace. With close to 700 ft of elevation. And pushing the last mile. All with a HR of 150.
That's a la-di-da run for most of you animals, but that's pretty good for me, especially on the heels of a tempo run 2 days ago.
Just made an appointment with the on-site PT here at work for Monday - soonest I could get in. Rest, stretch, rocoup until then.Make an appointment with either a masseuse or chiro/sports doc. With my wife's sore throat, she got something like these that are for kids while at work. When we went for our run together on Monday night, she had popped one of those in as we're getting ready to start. I just looked at her and started smiling and she just winked and started jogging. @MAC_32's influence carries on......You're almost ready for a lollipop run.
