Ran a 10k - Official Thread (6 Viewers)

Solid 30-min ride on the Peloton this morning. Today is 27 straight days, and I can definitely see that I’m getting stronger. It’ll be interesting to see if/how it helps my running, but I can’t imagine it won’t.

@SteelCurtain and I both finished 30 straight days of 100 push-ups yesterday. I think we’re both planning on continuing at least through the end of the month.

Planning on a 5- to 7-mile GA run today and hopefully 15 tomorrow.

Once it's up and recorded, check out the at-home HIIT ride that Alex did at home today.  Butt-kicker.
Will bookmark for another day.  Workout tomorrow so it might be awhile. I’m scared of how sweaty a harder bike effort will make me, the easy ones so far have been alarmingly sweaty.

As many in here can attest, I'm a VERY heavy sweater.  I'm dripping by the end of some of these rides.  Even riding shirtless with a fan blasting right at me.

It will be interesting to see how both benefit you - the hard bike workouts and the push-ups.  I feel like the biking is valuable because it keeps the hips active/rotating and builds the upper leg strength.  Push-ups work the other end of the upper body.  In the first mile of the 5K race, I noticed my biceps being sore.  :bag:   That's a mix of not committing to my upper body work and poor race posture.  I did 5 x 20 push-ups last night to get back at it.

Just a quick update on Mrs. GM....

She was really, really bummed after her 5K.  To the point where I felt horrible for getting her involved in this to begin with.  I had already texted @gruecd afterward that she wouldn't be joining us for any further events.  She was particularly aggravated because she ran the long run 4 days earlier and knows she wasn't in the right shape to run the 5K even though she had an excellent run.  I also think she's much more of an endurance runner (she always does better at longer distances) than a short distance runner, just the opposite of me.

Well, I worked that night, came back the next day expecting more gloom and she was already back at it.  I saw tabs on the computer browser "workouts to run your best 5K" and "How to run a faster 5K".  Then, without prompting, I hear, "and you better find a flat or downhill course for our 10K".

She doesn't like to lose.  She doesn't like to fail.  It's why she's still beaten me at every race we've done together except for the 5K distance.  It's why she went out for a 5 mile run a couple hours after the 5K and got up to 50 miles for the week.  It's also why I'm glad she's on our team and why I feel better about getting her involved.  Oh, and why she's a pretty cool wife too.

Expect more coming up, #TeamJuxt
If she wants to have a better 5k time, the only option is to join team juxt

I drank 9 beers last night.  I ate a bunch as I knew it was going to be a long night with the BIL and our draft night tradition (which starts with a power hour).

Today was a disaster.  I kid you not, it started with me pooping 5 times this morning.  These werent no sit-n-go's either, true bucket fillers.  This working out and little drinking has messed my body up.  I can no longer properly function after a night of drinking.  There was no chance I did any working out today, let alone intervals.

The good news is that it looks like a 60F+ day tomorrow.  I may just go for my first bike ride outdoors, yay!

@Alex P Keaton

Be careful running so fast/hard on every run.  Your 5K pace was 7:43.  You've had 3 runs since then and they all start with the number 8.

To compare, @MAC_32 is running the same paces you are.  Except his 5K was sub 17 minute.  Your easy runs (which should be most of your runs), especially after your 5K, should have a 10 in front of them for your pace.

I know you're on the other team, but aside from the fact that it'll get you faster by slowing down, it'll also keep you from getting hurt.

Thanks for the advice.   Sincerely.  Went out to run casually and ran into some buddies.  Socially distant group run turned too competitive.... ;)

Hoping to do a nice, slow, boring run on Sunday morning.  Again, thanks for advice!

Great job.

I missed a day, forgot a day, then stopped.

Really need to get back into strength training. Maybe I'll do a plank challenge and 100 20kg kettle bell (it's what I have) swings daily.
yeah.. I started, did some bonus early and then bailed.

If I’d gone out earlier I’d be done by now.
but since I didn’t, I still have my run to look forward to today.
Regardless, a nap will be happening.

The pace on my run will seem abnormally high today, but it's because I stopped at the end of my run to talk to a guy about the grass seed blend he uses on his lawn. Forgot to stop my watch.

Been meaning to talk to him for awhile and finally caught him while he was outside. He uses a nice fescue/bluegrass blend, and he started a turf company here years ago that his sons now own. SCORE!! :headbang:   They will be overseeding my lawn in the fall.

In related news, Mrs. ChiefD ran 6.5 miles today - her longest ever!!

I need a rest day...or at least a couple easy days. HR was high from the jump today. In hindsight, probably should’ve backed off the pace, but I feel like sometimes it’s also beneficial to just embrace the harder-than-usual effort.

Legit high, did it feel like the effort was harder or is the watch wrong?

I always assume the watch is wrong, at least for the first 70 minutes.

Do you think he put on a Chief’s shirt just for the video or is that just standard attire?

By the way, are you OK? You haven’t been running recently.
Regular attire, I'm sure.

Thanks for asking and noticing. I didn't run last 2 days. I had that little bit of "something" in the knee so Friday was a planned rest day after 3 days of running (plus the weekend activities).

Yesterday, was a combination of being a little tired from work, an awful day weather wise (gray, rain, threatening thunderstorms all day), and a bit of just not being in the mood.  But, previously, a day I would have gotten out in so not a great excuse.

I've realized I'm out of that routine of running most every day that I had gotten used to and I need to get that back. All this time off has now sapped that motivation. I'll get it back. Planning on 5 miles in a bit and hoping all goes ok. If so, I'll try to get into a better routine starting this week.

I needed that chiefd website today.

I love been a first thing in the morning runner for al ong time. The wife did her back in last week, so I've been taking care of the kids in the morning and then her, which pushes my run after breakfast/eating. Hadn't been a problem until today. The last 2 miles felt like I was in the taxi to the hospital doing my best not to give birth in the back seat. And even though I found a trail, it was next to the main road into OC, and right behind suburban development. I was tempted though...needed that website

On a more positive note, I'd been planning on not running today, but the weather was picture-perfect, so I opted for an easy recovery run instead. Ran 100% by HR and averaged 128 for my 5 miles at 8:12 pace...

...and Garmin still gave me another "unproductive."

My streak through the virus has come to a close. Same number as the last one. 50.

Mid 40's, wind, rain, and no energy. Seemed like a good day to not leave the couch.

For @-OZ- and @JAA and the rest of you cyclists...

New 30-min Peloton PR this morning.  Total output was 474kj, average output 263 watts.  Top 2% of class.  Just edged out Danny Kanell.

Well, the weather is certainly changing.  After this morning, there are no temperatures below 40 in my 10-day forecast.
Yeah, we're supposed to dip down to 38° on Thursday night, but that's it.

Temps in the 50s and 60s = no shirt = less laundry

Without a half marathon or marathon on the schedule, I've decided to cut mileage some but increase intensity to see if I can get a little faster.  After the 10K I promised myself I'd even try to do some track stuff (I think it's still open) and maybe even strides to prep for the mile.  Hopefully that helps.

You're supposed to wait until August to get faster.

It's official

I'm at the point in my life where I can run fairly well, do a copious amount of pushups, Kettle bell swings, ride with decent wattage, etc. But chop down one small tree with an ax, and my back complains for 4 days.
I'm none of those things.

and I'm not even sure how I did it... maybe lunging for a backhand playing tennis with my kids... but my left shoulder has been killing me, and has made part of my arm and left thumb numb for the last few days. I'm sure that's normal. :oldunsure:   good thing I don't have my good insurance any more.

The hill poppers I did yesterday were beneficial as I pushed hard fully on the balls of my feet.  Short hills, but a rather sharp grade to them, and I could definitely feel it.  It seemed to open up the adductors, which helps my striding.  My sore heel, though, is really feeling it from the stretch of those strides.

Well, it appears the HIM is delayed to September 12.

So giddyup on the 10k!

Now I get to decide if I want to do the 5M swim the week after the HIM. low impact and I'll hopefully have some pool time, so maybe.

Sadly, the wet dog sprint could also be postponed, but that's in June so it could still go.

Woot!  Now, since the theory is that we really don't improve much in the final two weeks before an event ...you've got about 3-5 days to pump the 10K training.  No pressure.

Speaking of races getting canceled, yesterday would have been my half.  On the plus side, it was an absolutely miserable morning - low 40s and steady rain here, so it would have been a fairly unpleasant race.  Minus side is they ended up rolling all of the entries to next year instead of attempting a reschedule.  I've thought about signing up for one of the local fall halves, but I'm not sure I want to commit to summer training, even if it's only for the back end of the summer.
