I think it is like the Tide Pod challenge. Someone on the Internet said I dare you to try this and here we are.Ok...what in the mother cluck is going on?!
I came in to post about slicing my hand up pretty good doing intervals yesterday (I was going so fast, the air just cameopened up my palm)...and I see this gru-sanity?!
Somebody explain.
Grue and Steel Curtain are doing a thing - starting around suppertime yesterday, they're running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours.Ok...what in the mother cluck is going on?!

So the Broad street 10 mile run was scheduled for tomorrow morning. I'm thinking of doing a 10 mile run anyways. Since the run was cancelled, I've stopped my training. I still generally run twice.a week (one run around 2-3 miles and the other around 4-5 miles). Also, I am doing some form of exercise every day to keep healthy (generally 30-60 minutes of HIIT/Body combat when I'm not running). I did complete a 10K a few weeks ago at a 9:30 minute pace but my knee was really hurting for a few days afterwards (I think I need to slow it down to maybe 10 minute pace). My original goal was to target a 10 minute pace for the Broad street. Good idea or bad idea to even attempt this tomorrow? I could always try and stop if my body disagrees with me.
- my rule of thumb is that if you can do it in a week you can do it in a day. Consider putting in a few more miles per week if your goal is not suffering the days after the 10mi run
That’s perfect, have a lot of friends doing the same baselines even those who have been biking a long time.I started a training plan on Zwift 7 weeks ago (Build me up) which starts with an FTP test then tailors a 12 week program around that. It’s been great and I definitely have workouts where my cardio is willing but the legs just aren’t there. It’s starting to catch up but some of those VO2 rides are still killer.
Interesting take- my rule of thumb is that if you can do it in a week you can do it in a day.
Yes.Interesting take![]()
You swam 5m?!Yes.
It started when I was researching my 5mi swim. I’m like, how do I know if I can swim 5mi?
Then when it came to my IM, all the plans have you converging on that. So now it’s my go to![]()
Your hand exploded mid run ??!?!?You swam 5m?!
Somebody gave you just a little bit of wrong info about IMs gb
Hmmmmmmm.- my rule of thumb is that if you can do it in a week you can do it in a day.

Just had some BBQ. To wash down the 2x frozen burritos I had pre run for lunch.Man, while those guys have been doing all that running I've been drinking beer and getting ready to grill some burgers and deep fry some chicken.
Their day sounds fun too!

I did the trifecta of @ChiefD events for the day... ran 13.1 miles, worked on reorganizing my garage, and grilled steaks and drank beer.Man, while those guys have been doing all that running I've been drinking beer and getting ready to grill some burgers and deep fry some chicken.

It’s getting less fun. Like mile 17 of a marathon.Man, while those guys have been doing all that running I've been drinking beer and getting ready to grill some burgers and deep fry some chicken.

This is outstanding work.I did the trifecta of @ChiefD events for the day... ran 13.1 miles, worked on reorganizing my garage, and grilled steaks and drank beer.
For bonus points, I bought 2 kayaks also...

I’m still doing pretty well. Takes a mile or so for the legs to loosen up, but then I’m golden. It’s getting less fun. Like mile 17 of a marathon.
Thanks. I really want to attempt this tomorrow. I’m going to start slow and feel it out. Mentally I will be fine and I’m not worried about the endurance factor. I’m worried about the knee. If I start to feel any pain, I’m stopping immediately. I don’t need to push things since it’s not the actual race.- my rule of thumb is that if you can do it in a week you can do it in a day. Consider putting in a few more miles per week if your goal is not suffering the days after the 10mi run

No way am I showing chief some of my tools - I'm using a pick that tends to slide down the handle (been this way for 5 years), but I haven't bothered to fix it so I just use extra care. Also, both of my main digging shovels leave a lot to be desired. This is outstanding work.
Great role model.
Chief would truly be pained by my garage.
Slides down toward your hands? Buncha loops of duct tape would take care of that, I would think. No way am I showing chief some of my tools - I'm using a pick that tends to slide down the handle (been this way for 5 years), but I haven't bothered to fix it so I just use extra care. Thanks. Grinding away. We are doing them at the exact same moment.Slides down toward your hands? Buncha loops of duct tape would take care of that, I would think.
Started off on my run today and passed a dumpster in front of a house. A big assortment of stuff in there ...including a shovel sticking up from the trash. I wept.

Grue and Steel Curtain both through leg 7! Grue heads out for leg 8 any minute. Steel Curtain started an hour later. Legs 9 and 10 will be a real challenge as nighttime runs ...then legs 11 and 12 might be tough physically and mentally after two choppy nights. You got this, crazy guys, you got this!
Yeah duct tape would probably work. I've put zero effort into fixing it because it's not an issue when swinging it since inertia forces the pick to the end of the handle. You just have to be careful not to hold it completely upright when carrying it or getting ready to swing. But in writing about it, it does seem pretty dumb that I haven't bothered to remedy the problem. I'll put it on my list for tomorrow.Slides down toward your hands? There's a 5 mile swim here in the fall I've been considering. Pretty sure Jàå did a very similar event. You swam 5m?!

Update with two legs to go:Feeling really good so far (knock on wood) with half of the challenge completed:
5pm - 8:10/mile, 125 AHR
9pm - 7:47/mile, 138 AHR
1am - 8:00/mile, 133 AHR
5am - 8:01/mile, 133 AHR
9am - 7:38/mile, 141 AHR
1pm - 7:47/mile, 134 AHR
Like I told my buddy, it's all downhill from here, counting down from 6. Hoping to maybe snag a quick nap here this afternoon, then hopefully a couple of legit 2-hour sleep sessions after my 9pm and 1am runs.
Good for you for giving it a shot. It's really all about consistency.Ugh just attempted 10 miles and only got 3 miles in and my knee started hurting. It stinks because I felt completely fine from an endurance stand point but there is no way I could push 7 miles without doing some serious damage to my knee. At least now I know that I will have to start up an intense training program before I attempt this again.
Those paces after all those runs is nothing short of incredible.Update with two legs to go:
5pm - 7:46/mile, 133 AHR
9pm - 7:50/mile, 129 AHR
1am - 7:58/mile, 125 AHR
5am - 7:50/mile, 125 AHR
Kinda weird. I don't feel like I'm working any harder than what the low HRs suggest, and yet I don't feel like I can go a ton faster. Is this kinda like what @JAA was talking about yesterday?
Especially I'm the middle of the night without much if any sleep over 48 hours. Those paces after all those runs is nothing short of incredible.
Since starting this on Friday at 5pm, I’ve had three solid 2-hour sleeps and a couple 20-minute naps. Are they sleeping?
This sounds...ungood. but amazing.
Hopefully you're taking tomorrow off work.Since starting this on Friday at 5pm, I’ve had three solid 2-hour sleeps and a couple 20-minute naps.
incredible to be doing that pace in those conditions.Since starting this on Friday at 5pm, I’ve had three solid 2-hour sleeps and a couple 20-minute naps.
That's not the point of the post. And yes, I know that.@gianmarco - you can’t compare those two runs. You have a 32 degree temp differential there.
I vote for number 2.Well, I'm struggling here a bit and need some advice/feedback on what I need to do going forward.
My fitness hasn't returned anywhere near as quickly as I would have hoped. Granted, I've taken it somewhat slowly coming back to be safe, but still. I'll get to my run later today in a bit, but if I do my planned 7-8 mile run this morning, I'll be at 25 for this week which was my goal.
Last night's run was awful, both physically and mentally. Worst run I've had in a long, long, long time. I went out for 5 miles in the evening and it was a struggle from start to finish. My legs don't feel quite right. I'm nervous with every step I'm taking to make sure I'm landing right which makes it worse. My ankle is starting to ache a little for trying to overcorrect a bit. It's just not good. On top of that, my HR has been so high lately and last night's heat and humidity (for the first time yet this year) made it all the worse. I wanted to turn around and go home so many times. I just feel like I'm still a bit away from having any level of fitness and even still not even approaching where I was. I should be starting week 7 of 18 for marathon training and I can try and start it this week but I'm not sure how it's going to go.
For the first time ever I thought of bailing on this marathon. I just don't see how I'm going to be ready realistically. Which, as I'm thinking of all this, is just making everything during the run much worse mentally. I have so little interest to get out now because it just doesn't feel good when I do and don't feel like I'm making progress. My HR was stupid high for such a slow pace.
I don't mind the mental grind of getting back into a groove if I think things will end up working out. I have so much motivation to do so. My wife, obviously. Our first marathon, doing it together. Her going for a BQ. She's killing her training right now. @JShare87 coming out there like he said he would. I mean, I want to get out there and do this so badly. But I'm starting to wonder if it's not the right idea. I see 3 options and I'm not sure what to do:
1) Suck it up, start my week 7 training, work as hard as I can, and toe the line with the idea of doing what I planned on doing. My fitness will catch up soon and it'll work out.
2) Keep running, but take it slowly, get into training when you can, and adjust your goal and just work on trying to complete the marathon but at a slower than intended pace.
3) It's not a good idea and it's time to cut my losses and forget J&J. Get back out there slowly and reset and pick a new first marathon like Monumental in November when I'm adequately trained.
It's a cooler, less humid morning today and I was going to go out for 8 miles. I haven't run over 6 miles in almost 2 months. What was turning into a regular/easy/enjoyable distance feels like a daunting task this morning. If today doesn't go well, it's not going to be good for me moving forward. Sigh......
ETA -- This is even more depressing. 1 1/2 months ago, same route. :(
8:58 pace, HR 143
10:29 pace, HR 151
@gianmarcoYou've ran 29 miles in the last 5 weeks. I think it's a great thing that you identified the source of the problem, but the problem also developed immediately after you raced two times in less than a week, which was some of the first something of substance you had done since...I don't remember when.
I'd focus on (easy running!) raw mileage between now and the mini taper for the 10K with plans on using that race to springboard you into the SoS workouts the plan calls for. Too much, too hard, too soon and you're gonna end up right back where you were at the end of March.
It's only been 2 weeks. Your fitness was not going to bounce back in that timeframe.I get it, you are starting behind. You think if you get further behind then it's going to snow ball. But I think you'll surprise yourself. That's why you did all of that volume from Dec-Feb. It'll be a frustrating month, but if you manage this healthy your fitness will bounce back - probably very suddenly.
To be fair, these are all just warmups for our heroes. Pretty cool to see them do itThose paces after all those runs is nothing short of incredible.
And that's the reason it's a challenge. The mileage is challenging but far less than the lack of sleep imo. Especially as you could just walk the 4 miles.Since starting this on Friday at 5pm, I’ve had three solid 2-hour sleeps and a couple 20-minute naps.
Always go #2I vote for number 2.

How are your last runs feeling? Could be decent training for an ultra.
Always go #2
Nah, as long as I get a good night’s sleep tonight, I’ll be fine.Hopefully you're taking tomorrow off work.
