Ran a 10k - Official Thread (11 Viewers)

I am at the point where I need to figure out my training plan for Monumental.

If I recall, someone had calculated out a ratio of marathon to HM times for the group?

I'm trying to figure out some sort of pace to train at and try for.  With a 1:31:42 HM time, the calculators have me at a 7:18 pace, which is laughable.
7:18 pace might be aggressive, but with your HM PR and the training you’ve put in over the past 1.5 years you could run sub 3:15 with a good marathon training cycle.

Run(317) is a fun 5k+ series I ran last year and signed up for again this year. All events are 3.17 miles for the 317 Indy area code. I missed the first one on vacation but ran the one tonight... and guess who accidently discarded the run from their watch.

<-- this guy :bag:

Damn it! These set the bar higher than I hoped  <_<

Bunch of studs...
Given the base you've established I think you can train for sub 3:15. If you get 6 weeks or so in and it's clearly way too aggressive then pivot and take the foot off the gas.

I've read double your HM time and add 10 minutes.

I've found that to be a bit too aggressive for me. Double your HM time and add 15 minutes is completely doable.  Therefore, I think the 3:15 goal is a realistic one.

However, remind me, is this your first marathon (my memory is atrocious so don't take it as an affront that I don't know)?  If so, I'd probably back off and go 3:20 or 3:25 for your first marathon.

It would be marathon #2.  First one (hopefully) without having COVID right before it.

I appreciate everyone's input  :hifive:

I have been trying to maintain one run a week at ~7:30 pace.  From the sounds of it, it wouldn't be absolutely crazy to go into training with that as the goal.  As stated, that can be backed down if it is killing me...yikes  :oldunsure:

Still unable to run so reached back out to my primary doctor, he reviewed my MRI and referred me to a sports rehab place(physical therapy). They couldn’t get me in front of a doctor until August but I can see a PA Wednesday so I snagged that.

Going to ask this PT place to recommend a primary care doctor that’s a runner, I want a doctor who understands the mentality that I want to get out and exercise every day as long as my body lets me.

Why not a sports medicine doctor?

Oregon22, the World Track and Field Championships, kicked off today here in Eugene and goes on for the next 10 days.  We ended up randomly hosting the coach of a Swedish 1500 meter runner who qualified just a couple of weeks ago, her first prelim is tonight.  Tix are pretty expensive so I think we're just going to pick and choose a few sessions to go to, probably starting with tomorrow night as it'll include the men's 100M semis and finals, as well as the women's 1500 (hopefully his runner qualifies tonight!).  I think I'll also go check out at least one of the marathons (Sunday and Monday mornings), which of course are mostly run on the city streets.

As I was typing the the sky started rumbling - a military jet just flew over my house on the way to Hayward Field on a flyover at the start of the broadcast!

Much of it is streamed on Peacock if you have that, and some of the prime time stuff is on other networks like USA for tonight's session.  Here is the full schedule of events, and here it is broken down by coverage.

Also saw this 3-minute video today, gave me the chills of course, but it's a great look at how Eugene became Track Town USA.

And for the ultra crowd, Hardrock 100 kicked off this morning - Dakota Jones just pulled about 12 minutes ahead of Killian and Francois D'Haene at mile 58, something like 20+ minutes under course record pace.  Irunfar has got you covered if you want to follow along.

She qualified on time, so moves on to tomorrow!  And she wasn’t happy with the hotel so she’s staying with us the next few nights. We all just re-watched all three heats of the 1500 together, pretty cool to hear her and her coach talk about it while watching. She’s chilling in our guest room with her Normatec compression boots on now, while I’m refreshing Hardrock coverage on Twitter.

Now if only I was an actual runner these days…….but this is pretty cool.

IIRC, it is something like a 2.25x your HM pace as a goal. There was a range but I recall 2.25 being about the right number for calculating. So that would put you about a 3:25 Marathon.
At peak or current?
PRs: 2.14. Probably closer to 2.25 now but both have gotten quite a bit slower.

I have 10 boxes of new shoes in my closet.  If I buy anymore, I'll need a divorce attorney and a place to live.
:)

kinvaras were on sale the other day, so now I have a pair ONE sitting in my closet waiting for the current rotation to wear out. 361s have become my walking shoes. they’re a bit heavier but also fairly responsive so short far runs work alright but I’m not doing much of that lately.

Is she hot?

My run this morning sucked balls... giant donkey balls to be more precise. Everything about it sucked and I'm still hurting several hours later... I think it is a combo of lack of hydration and a few busy days in a row but I bonked hard. Was planning to do 10. Walked for about .35 miles after 8, finished out to 9 and walked home. I have a lot of work to do.

It seems you like the 5k series for accountability but if you are really pushing them as races as you build, it’s going to be tricky to balance pushing through and recovery and training.

Not sure how you are approaching them but might want to occasionally weave them in as workouts with warm and cool miles added on rather than race efforts.

They are a fun series. I haven't ever run one "all out" but do kind of push them a bit - hard not too with all the people out there. And they may have the best after race atmosphere ever. DJ cranking out the tunes, couple free beers/wines from local brewers/wineries and a lot of games available (cornhole, giant jenga, etc). There's a number of friends and coworkers that are running it too so fun times to hang out.

In this case, I averaged about 7:55 pace, which right now is a strong pace for me but not 'too much'. But I umpired 3 baseball games on Friday, 2 behind the plate, which is a lot of squats. And, despite drinking a lot of water on Friday, I think it wasn't quite enough, especially with the humidity out there today. It was only low to mid 70s but like 85% humidity and a dewpoint of about 66 or so.

But my legs hurt, my HR was very elevated for the pace I was running, my breathing was far more labored than it should have been for 9:15 to 10 min/mile paces and I was just flat out spent way before I would have expected to be. I'm hoping to chalk it up to "some days are just like that" but it really was a bit of a bummer to feel so bad on a run.

Summit says "hold my biscuit."
Summit’s upset we’re watching the marathoners run on our trails on tv and we’re still at home.

Watching this first loop on tv so I can figure out where best to go that we can walk to from here to watch them run by us once in person. Was planning on being there in Alton Baker Park along Pre’s Trail but saw yesterday they closed it for the race.

We’re walking around the 26-28k mark for loop 2, not far from the start/finish.

Not sure how I’d fare with a 3x loop course but this one is sweet.

I’m watching on delay, just through 1st loop, I’ll try to negative split my viewing.

Momma there goes that man. Turned it into a blowout.

Obligatory mention that Kara Goucher is fantastic in the events she does commentary.

And track and field shoots itself in the foot yet again. You have an American who’s a favorite for a medal….running in his home stadium….who’s headed to an NFL training camp next week…..And he’s disqualified on an arbitrary bs rule, basically for being too quick.

So sad for the kid. His dad died during Nationals a couple of weeks ago but he got through and qualified for worlds. And then this bull####.

And yes, it’s an arbitrary BS rule.
Hated that, brutal.

Loved the 1500m semi. What a bunch of maniacs.

So I finally got COVID. I’ve had a sore throat and some other somewhat mild symptoms the last few days and took a test this morning.

Internet seems to say not to exercise with symptoms. I was OK running yesterday. (Saturday too but that was early on with symptoms.) I assume I’d be OK. What did you guys do? I forgot.

Man you've had some tough luck over the past year, just when you're getting back to running everyday you get Covid. When I got it January I took 8 days off, I probably could have started sooner but being between training cycles I took my time. Hope your symptoms stay mild, I'm sure you'll recover quickly.

I looked back and my activities were almost nil for 2 weeks and then a couple more gradually getting moving again.

Hope you have mild experience, take it easy.

I saw your post on Instagram about the marathon and just happened to flip on NBC yesterday to watch some of the sprints. Was more excited about them showing the hammer throw as I was a shot/disc guy but still entertaining.

Speaking of ultra's, Walmsley put in some work this weekend winning the Ultra Tour du Beaufortain. Good luck finding much news on it other than Strava. He's been living there for the past few weeks getting acclimated. This is all prep for the Ultra-Trail Mont Blanc later this year.

I think I took nearly a week off.  Admittedly, I wasn't training for anything and just hoping to get better in time for Boston (which was day 11 after my positive test.)

My Boston ended up being my slowest marathon by 30 minutes.  And 45 minutes slower than a race I paced about a month prior.  So COVID definitely impacted me.

My recommendation would be to lay low until your symptoms are gone.  But you are an animal and could probably run 6:30 pace long run tomorrow.

Yeah I didn't circle back on Hardrock here, but turned out to be a hell of a race.  Dakota Jones, Kilian, and Francois D'Haene ran together for the first 50 miles or so.  Dakota pulled ahead by 10-12 minutes at one point after that but then started to fall off.  Francois and Kilian passed him and ran together for a bit, then Kilian put him away with a new course record. Because of course he did.

The women's race wasn't really close, Courtney Duwaulter led pretty much from start to finish and set the course record as well.

And the last finisher finished in 47:57 and change, under three minutes from the cutoff.  Two full days out there between 9,000'-14,000' on some of the gnarliest trails in North America.
