Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

Race day tomorrow.

Running a half marathon titled "The Millbrook Hilltopper".

It has somewhere in the neighborhood of 925 feet of elevation gain. I'm hoping to run about 7:25 pace for the entire thing.  It should be a good workout but not an all out race.  However, its a smaller race, so I may look to see who is in my AG and adjust a little faster if need be.  Hills from mile 4 up to mile 6 and then a very steep 1/2 mile hill at mile 8.

I ran the course back on July 16, so I have a sense of what I'm facing.  Should be fun.

I'm heading to Yankee game (after I shower) and with the board going down, best bet is to see how I did on Strava. Unlikely to get a RR up here before the board is turned off.

:towelwave: get some!

Was doing some purging in my home office and found a copy of Galloway's Book on Running.  It's in just ok shape but I'm happy to send it to one of you folks if you want it.  I'm donating it otherwise.

Achievement unlocked - bike with jersey wide open

On long rides, I'll typically wear a cycling jersey so I have pockets for stuff. It zips from belly button to neck. If Ive ever seen anyone rocking the jersey with the zipper down disco style, I'm always thinking "get a load of this guy".  Well yesterday I got caught in a sprinkle. Like running - wet jersey leads to dry nips. I was going to suffer through it, but then I remembered the zipper. Let the world see my luscious V of hair going through my chest pubes. Crisis averted.
Lil tip from your Uncle beer, some smart runner dudes taught me this and it translates, Curad surgical tape on the hot sweaty days saves a nasty discovery in the shower afterward. For the record I ride with the zipper down a notch because I hate the feeling of having the jersey around my neck. Yesterday I did go a little further down because I was riding on the sun.

So @Harris is off on the Transcontinental ...what appears to be a six-day bike route across Europe.  Here's the map.  Impressive stuff!!  For his first leg, per Strava, he started at 10:00 pm and did 240 miles over 16 hours, 47 minutes.   :loco:   That was good enough for 161st place out of 214 solo riders.  I just can't imagine ...
What he’s doing is incredible and if you’re not following along you should be. This is like a Western States effort everyday for 6 days. Yesterday he put in a 154.6 mile ride with 12,431 of gain. It takes me a few weeks to hit those totals. Crazy good stuff @Harris, keep crushing it!

Oh yea, and just for fun, it’s a self supported race so you have to pack everything you need on your bike.

That's hot!

Thanks @Zasada, the workouts and more volume are coming.

49.6% through 2022. June volume down a tad with relay before and after.
June 22 - 147 miles - 8:57 / 131 AHR

YTD June 22 - 952 mi - 9:13/131 AHR

YTD June 21 - 1010 mi - 9:21/131 AHR

Reviewing older training to get some confidence going for this block and for a big rest of the year.
July 22 - 233 mi / 9:04 / 130 AHR

Looks like most monthly miles by a couple for me. Good month of training has me poised for continued gentle ramp on quality miles within same relative volume. Couple upcoming training races for combo workouts or long run purposes and a trip to Brooklyn should break up the August haze.

June stats:

53 miles, 7:54 average pace, 145 average heart rate.

Hoping for improvement in July.
July: 146 miles, 7:48 average pace, 141 average heart rate.

Not much improvement. Obviously, getting COVID didn’t help.

Injuries are slightly improved since June. That’s a plus.

I got in my 70 for the week which put me at 283 for the month. I don’t want to open my laptop since I’m on vacation, but I’m sure my monthly totals will show I’m slightly less efficient than July of 2021, approximately 5 sec/mile. Not really concerned about it as I think the weather has been worse this year and I have run more treadmill workouts than usual.

There aren’t any workouts planned for this week, just a 20 miler, so I will have to wait until next week to see how I handle some tougher workouts outside.

My only concern is that I typically develop knee pain after 4-5 days of being down the shore, I think it’s caused by sitting in beach chairs that sit too low. Purchased a new chair today that sits higher, so far so good.

Not surprisingly training around here has really picked up. Berlin boys @SteelCurtain had another big week and @bushdocda is locked it with his MP miles. It sucks to see that @Zasadagot sick, but seems to have bounced back quickly.

Fueling on the bike seems so different than running.  I got a good taste of what it feels like, I think, to be properly fueled.  I was tired yesterday and didn't really feel like doing anything, but I really wanted to ride a bit longer than I did Saturday to do a pseudo double.

The feeling of being tired but still having the power to crank out some watts across the two long bridges was an interesting feeling.  Before I'd get tired and just run out of power along with that fatigue.  Not this time.  Learning how to harness that will be a fun adventure.

How is it different?  What you take in is different?  Or your body needs different things compared to running?

I'm intrigued as I would think calories are calories and the body wouldn't care if you were using them for running or biking or hiking or rowing or whatever.  Maybe I'm wrong.

My body just felt different.  My whole body felt almost totally drained at the halfway point of my ride yesterday (I got scared I was so far from home), but I had made a conscious effort to get ~200cal in me every hour.  That seemed to continue to give my legs the energy to maintain the same wattage I typically put out, even though I physically felt pretty tired.

I don't remember ever feeling like that during a 20 miler or a marathon.  If my legs still had that pop at the end of a long run, my whole body felt energized.  It was never just my legs.

Went to a new Doc today, she thinks I might have a back issue which is presenting itself as groin pain. In addition to X-rays, blood work and another MRI she prescribed prednisone to reduce inflammation.

During marathon training I got a bad cold that wouldn’t go away, I was prescribed prednisone and ran a 1:45 half marathon training run that was easily my best run this year, kind of came out of nowhere because I had been running in discomfort since early in February.

it would be nice to know what it is but back issues is about last on my list of things that I was hoping to hear.
Ok next update, MRI revealed a tumor/growth in my lower spine called a Schwannoma. Very rough 2 days from getting the call that I had some type of spinal tumor to seeing the PA who calmed me down and said not likely cancer and if it is looks isolated and can be removed. There’s also some other inflammation that might be causing my pain but honestly don’t care about that now.

Tomorrow I have an MRI with contrast so they can get a better look at this thing and then I have follow ups with my primary and sports/spine PA to figure out what’s next.

Certainly not an update I was expecting but it sounds like you’re on the right track. I hope all goes well from here.

For those not following along on Strava, @Harris just finished his FREAKING EPIC ride across Europe. 14 days, 17 hours, 4,400km (2,734 miles for the metrically challenged) for a 72nd place finish. Incredible journey, really hoping he pops in and unpacks it for us. Congratulations!

We should kick him off the board and Strava if he doesn't come and post about this epic accomplishment. I want to hear all about it!!!

Dude, kick *** month. Nice work.

I was battling norovirus for a few days. The day I came down with it, I tried to run, but spent most of it in a run-(almost)barf-walk-run-(almost)barf cycle. Then the next few days were spent at home not eating. It's nice to have that behind me, and get back to it.

Haven't been back north for a while, and the DFW running is really starting to wear me down mentally. I got out to the (only) local trails last weekend, and as usual, they were hot, steamy, and packed with people. Took in about 3L of water before/during the run, and still finished dehydrated.

In about 10 days I go back north for the trail race (29K/1,000m) I run every year on my local trails. My fitness level is the best it's ever been going into this race, but I have nothing in the way of trail legs. Will be interesting to see how that translates to performance. Worst case, it's a great run and not here in DFW.

This morning I did my (now) standard 13K run and it was my lowest HR ever (both average and finishing) at these temps. I was still hating the experience, but maybe there's something to this acclimation thing. I hope. Perhaps I can hang on to some of that for R2R2R, which is really sneaking-up on me. Just two months away now.

Finally saw a fox this morning. First time in all these years.

In other local news, they are going to reconstruct and widen the bike/running path at the park I occasionally run in.

I’m sure you all are excited about these developments.
I typically see more foxes on the downtown Chicago path and occasionally in the burbs when college lets out. It's a treat. Hope you got some pics.

It’s sad that I’m more excited to see the canine type these days.

As a few of you know, we had an offer accepted on a new house yesterday. This'll put us conveniently midway between both our kids (who also both moved within the past ten months). It's a ranch house, but with a basement for all my running gear and the medals I've monged. We'll actually have more room than in our current colonial where we've been for 37 years, but without all the stairs. So now I get to adjust to a new set of running routes. We'll be in Wheaton, a further-out suburb of Chicago, where I'll be close to a variety of urban trail systems - paved and wood-chip. I'll also be much closer to the Morton Arboretum where I like to do hilly runs. I'll miss the familiarity of my old routes, though, at least for a while.

The @bushdocda did not make it to this new zen garden, he’s somewhere between the other one and here probably chasing a butterfly.
But this one, complete with an original _ at the end, will serve as as a less well known member.

Yo. Thanks to you all for following along and the messages of encouragement! I know I haven't been around here in a while but really appreciated the good vibes throughout the race.

I'm working on a big ol race report but overall it was an amazingly hard but beautiful race. The format (self-supported, creating your own route, multi-day, etc) is incredibly addicting and if not for a family and life obligations I would already be thinking about signing up for next year. So many lessons learned about racing and life and I grew in ways I never could have imagined.

I still don't have full feeling in many of my fingers (might take a couple months to come back) but other than that I am feeling great.

Now that this training and everything else is finished, I'll be back to mixing in some running and swimming, etc. Looking forward to more time spent with family and friends and checking in here more often.

Race report coming soon!

Can’t complain about the August weather. Only a few mornings in the 70s, a few in the high 50s, and a 10-day forecast with lows almost entirely in the low 60s. Highs are only in the high 70s/low 80s. Don’t even need to turn on the air conditioning.

Right back where I got my start in HS (well, next town over). Good luck on the move and the transition! Didn't we do a 5K in Wheaton once upon a time (zoo run?). Anyway, lots of forest preserves around there for you to explore. Nice little downtown, though small compared to OP.

$750 electric bill for me this month in DFW.
Whoa. Even with our record heat, I'm still a good ways below that.

Yeah it's basically been a string of 7 weeks of 100+ and sunny. No rain. So the sun is just cooking the house and both A/C units run nonstop. If we could get some cloud/rain, that would help. But no.

F That.

It's TX, you have another month or so before that comes then you'll have a months worth in 6 hours and everything will flood. About the time you get that cleaned up will be winter time and everything will freeze for 3 days and shut the state down. Then you'll have a week of nice weather and right back into the oven (y)

Yup! The zoo run, but it wasn't at the zoo. The north part of that run went through a neighborhood with a lot of ranch homes, but they're all older and not many have been remodeled. That was the trick, finding a ranch that had been upgraded and expanded along the way, and we found that. Really looking forward to the forest preserves; the prairie path; new neighborhood routes; etc.

During my last mile this morning, I found a lost child. Probably a three-year old.

He was at the corner of a somewhat busy intersection by the high school. He was dressed but in bare feet and tugging a small plastic wagon. No parent anywhere to be seen. He wouldn’t talk to be. A woman stopped who had seen him cross the street by himself moments earlier. He wouldn’t talk to her either. We called 911 and waited for the police to show up.

Very odd.

We had a muggy stretch last week, but our patience through it has been rewarded this week. Dew points have been in the 50's since Tuesday and long range indicates that should hold for at least another week. We've had some good summers lately, but this has been the best one yet - except for last week haven't had any hot/humid stretches that last more than 36 hours or so. I've said for years the southern great lakes was going to be vacation destination in my lifetime and now I'm thinking it'll be by the end of the decade. We're considering scrapping our planned Carolina vacation next year and doing a couple 4-5 day trips instead - one in New York and another probably near Tri-man's summer stomping grounds.

Heartbreaking. Literally brings me to the verge of tears thinking about our little one being out and lost like that. Poor little dude must've been so scared. :frown:

I don't suppose you have an update?

Good of you to stop.

This has happened to me a couple times. One time this kid about the same age was in his front yard knocking on his garage door. I went up and asked if it was his house and he nodded yes.

Took him to the front door and rang the doorbell. Parents came to the door and had no idea he was outside. He must have gone out the back door and out of the side gate.

No update. He didn’t seem afraid or unhappy. Something was off. Maybe autism? I don’t know.

There are houses across the street. I assume he lives nearby and wandered out and is back with his family by now.
