Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

What does it take to get me to come out of race retirement?
12 doughnuts!
Returning for another go after 9 years but bringing the wife and kids.
(Using a college tour of NC State as an excuse for the drive from PA)

I did it once before in 2014 and here were my notes...
"Garmin Breakdown: First 2.5mi - 19:30 (7:48/mi), eating doughnuts - 15:30 (1:17/doughnut), last 2.5mi - 19:16 (7:42/mi). Note to self: Donuts make me faster"

So yeah....I'm already committed to running Berlin next September, and then Wednesday morning I got an email from AbbottWMM saying that I got one of the 500 spots they're making available for London to runners with 3-5 stars in their profile. My wallet doesn't love the idea of two European races in six months, but I feel like it's something I kinda have to do...

London tour operator is a bigger blast to the wallet. Enjoy the "free" ride thanks to Abbott!

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved? From last years report:

I'm signed up for a half marathon in early April. The way it's going right now I'm pretty sure I won't race it. Meaning, I'll still run it but it's going to be a long slow run. I have no desire to get fast again. (at least right now). I've never bailed on a race I signed up for, so at least I'll keep that streak alive.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:

Ran the half marathon in April with literally no training whatsoever. Finished in 2:28:49, which I consider quite the accomplishment considering the lack of training. And we got a tremendous lawn mowing video after, which is nice.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Just finishing. Back in my race report I wrote about a couple of guys who were running with the pacer I ended up with (she was smoking hot). Anyway, I'm proud of THESE guys:

Guy 1: was running his first half marathon, and to see the excitement on his face as he was coming down the stretch was incredible. At the finish line I let him go ahead so his photo would be just him crossing the line without some random goof wearing a BEER stocking cap.

Guy 2: talk about inspiring. This guy had let himself go during the pandemic and gained 40 pounds. He decided to do something about it, and in December started training. He has lost 30 pounds since January by exercising and completely revamping his diet. With a mile left to go he turned to the pacer and said "thanks for your help, but I'm gonna run hard the rest of the way and finish strong."

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

Just all of it. Another year of just not really caring about running.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:

271 miles as of today. Will probably end up a little under 300 for the year.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

If you don't run, you gain weight.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:

The Ironman races of @Dark Matter and @ThreeThousand for sure. @Zasada with his rim job as well. Amazing performances from these guys. And I know there are more out there, but my memory ain't what it used to be. Congrats to all you guys who keep plugging along.

Goal(s) for 2023:

Rock the Parkway HM in April. Trying to pick it up a bit lately, and will start my training program for this race Jan 2. Hopefully break two hours this year.

FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

From last year’s report:
1K miles is a must but beyond that I’m not sure. Want to do more weight training to increase general strength. I have my local half coming up in April, for which I think I am going to try to do ~12 week plan and hopefully snag a PR there. After that I’ll play it by ear.
Yes on the 1K (should be around 1090). Yes on the weight training which is a big win as that’s been an elusive goal for years. No on the PR unfortunately.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:
Second straight year with basically no injuries, so very pleased with that. Only had two races, and didn’t sniff a PR in either of them. I don’t think I got any slower this year, so that’s a plus, particularly since my volume is down a bit and father time of course continues apace.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):
Not much to pick from, but I went pretty deep into the pain cave for the last half of the HM. I’m proud of the effort that I put forth that day.

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:
Still a bit bummed about being unable to hit my goal in the half. 187.9 in March was my largest training month ever by over 50 miles. One would think that would have gotten me over my HM stagnation.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:
1,072 miles and 32,500 ft of elevation with 11 days to go. That will be the lowest since 2018, but the recent years have been in the 1,100-1,300 range, so it’s not crazy low for me.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:
I’m not sure if it’s the right takeaway, but the spring training follies have pushed me further into the camp that my body responds better to quality than quantity. In an ideal world of course I’d do both, but I feel like when I start ramping up the miles I end up with too many junk miles in there. Need to think about how I want to handle my next training uptick.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:
It’s great to see juxt and pbm reaping the fitness rewards of all the work that they put in. Zasada too, who’s just a machine. Xulf destroying his HM goal was awesome. Jshare seems to be ramping up to some awesomeness as well. Good to see gian and chief taking the steps to get back out there more regularly. Apologies to those I forgot.

Goal(s) for 2023:
I remain in a bit of a no man’s land. I haven’t PR’d in a few years, but I’m still within shouting distance of my best times. I’m mainly running for health benefits (hence finally adding in some strength training), but in the back of my mind I’m well aware that eventually the PR window will close for good, so that gets me out there more than I otherwise would. I should hit 10,000 lifetime miles either end of 2023 or beginning of 2024, which is a cool milestone. BQ still in the back of my mind (despite never having run more than 16 miles), but I think I need at least one age group step up (possibly two) for that to be realistic, so still simmering on the back burner for now.

So, after all that windbaggedness, maybe only concrete goal is to meet another one of you maniacs in person.

Easiest year-end report ever...

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

‘Goals? I have no interest in any sort of training plan, so while my headspace now is vastly different than this time last year my racing goals are the same: none.’

I successfully achieved 'none.'

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:

I figured out a regimen that works for middle aged MAC. Heavy weights are now a thing of the past. It's all dumb bells, cables, and bands (if anything) and if I can't complete 15 reps for a given movement then reduce the weight. It was 8-9 months of trial-and-error then another 3-4 of testing, but I've figured out something that allows me to function at about 90ish% most days.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Watching our 10 year old cross the finish line of his final XC race of the year in a distant first place (thank my wife, but be careful with the volume).

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

The injury roller coaster that finally subsided mid-late summer.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:

The six year 2,000+ mile streak is 12 days from officially ending. I'm currently at 1,175 and expect to tack on about 50 or so more. That said, the 394 miles I've net so far this quarter is already my highest total since Q3 2021 by more than 60 miles. I'm finally on the right track...

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

I'm at a stage in my life in which maximum running performance is not a priority. And that's okay.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:

Definitely the KT relay. Bummed I had to miss it because we were supposed to be in Ireland. Further bummed because Ireland got cancelled (covid) and I was injured anyway. Hopefully something like that happens again in the future.

Goal(s) for 2023:

Still none. Unlike 2022 I will race something, but what isn't something I'm gonna think about until February shoulder season. I'm gonna run as frequently as mother nature will allow between now and then (i.e. not this weekend  ), but unless it's on trails or we get a pleasant unseasonal surprise that fits the schedule I doubt I'll do anything over an hour before the first melt. If I end up in a position Q4 to restart a 2,000+ mile streak then I will, but unlike prior years it isn't an issue I'm going to force.

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Complete IM Oregon 70.3, Long Beach Marathon, IM Arizona (Done, Done & Done)

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:
Completing a full distance Ironman. Super proud of myself for having completed the IM BUT have a feeling that I could have done better, like I left some in the tank. Today marks a month from the event and it is gnawing at me just a little bit. I told myself that one IM would be enough but now I'm not so sure.......

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):
Becoming an Ironman! I would add that the swim portion of IM Oregon 70.3 was my favorite segment. 1.2 miles of downstream swim, beat my PR by 20 minutes!

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:
The run portion of IM Oregon....really struggled getting my legs going the entire HM, cramping, chaffing, vomiting. Probably do this race again in the near future.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:
According to Strava (there's more out there not recorded due to forgetting the Garmin):
Swim: 93,911 yds looks like I need to hit the pool the next 11 days to get over 100K!!
Bike: 2, 415 miles
Run: 568 miles
Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:
Training for an Ironman is really, really hard. Funny, in last year's report I said the work/life balance is "doable." It is doable but the stress on work and relationships is real, especially the last 3 months prior to the IM race. My wife is an Ironman and a great sherpa/support/lifeguard/caddy but even we struggled with the time spent training, lack of social life, financial output (IM's are EXPENSIVE!!).

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:
@SteelCurtain pacing every marathon in every major city...again! Following Lenny Maughan on Strava, if you don't, you should. Watching the "old guys" @tri-man 47 & @Juxtatarot in amazement as they continue to crush AG 1st's 🏅 All of you other Inspirational BMF'ers that I forget to mention.

Goal(s) for 2023:
January 7 Citrus Heritage HM
February 5 Surf City HM
March 19 LA Marathon (PR?)
May 7 OC HM (PR?)

Wasn’t there a relay you were going to host?
There was a Gettysburg to Washington relay that looked kind of intriguing. This was all pre-covid of course. I can check and see if the race still exists if there is interest. I couldn't necessarily "host" it as the start line is 2+ hours from my domicile, but could certainly handle a lot of the logistical aspects of it.

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

2500 miles running - I'm at 2252 right now with another 10 days to go in the year. I likely will get slightly over 2300 miles for the year. I had this goal but got COVID in April and just kind of let it go. I'm trying to not obsess over mileage goals except during heavy training cycles.

I completed 681 workouts on Peloton this year. (Including 282 strength, 270 stretching and 102 cycling) I'd love to get to 750 workouts in 2022. I want to keep up my strength better than I have in the past. I'm at 528 for the year right now. So will definitely miss on the 750 number for 2022. Only 163 strength and 260 stretching. Need more cycling so need to get @gruecd, @JShare87, and @bushdocda back to our regular weekly ride to stay accountable. I really have no excuse for my lack of performance here other than I'm lazy.....and maybe ran a bit more outside in the cold this year?

I will look at scattered running between now and March. Then basebuilding April through June. Before finally embarking on my marathon training block for a PR attempt in Fall 2022. So much can happen with race day challenges with weather, etc., its tough to say my goal is a PR. I want to put myself in a position to attempt a PR on race day. At the very least, I'd like to qualify for the 2024 Boston Marathon. If I run 2024, it would be my 7th straight Boston. PRed Berlin with a 3:08:57 which is a 16 minute BQ.

I will hopefully pace a few races this year, I just don't know where and when (I'd love to do NYC again, but its so political and nothing is certain). Paced 4 marathons and a couple half marathons. Really enjoyed pacing Philadelphia for the first time. Returned to NYC for my second straight pacing assignment. Pacing opportunities continue to open doors for me as I was invited to pace Chicago and London marathons, but had to turn both down as schedule and life wouldn't allow it.

I need my Berlin lottery result before I can plan the rest of my racing year ( @bushdocda and I are a team in the Berlin lottery so we might both be going to Germany!) Had a great time with @bushdocda and his wife in Berlin.

Looking forward to having a crew coming to Boston for the marathon this year. We will have to plan a dinner....and post race drinks. Schedules were tough so we did a post race lunch. Great time celebrating Mrs. @gianmarco's first Boston!

I would like to tone down my desserts at home and eat a bit healthier. Currently, I'm at 178.5 lbs (which is 16 lbs higher than I was in London/Boston and probably 12 lbs heavier than I was at Indy.) Woke up this morning and weighed myself. 182.2. :kicksrock:

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:
Berlin Marathon - 3:08:57. PR by 80 seconds.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Berlin last 10K. This is where things can fall off easily, but I persevered and felt I pushed appropriately but not to the place of disaster (muscles seizing up, etc.)

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

I'm still terribly disappointed in missing my goal time at NYC Marathon. Admittedly, about half of the pacers didn't hit goal and several DNFed due to heat and extreme humidity, however, I should have been able to do that pace quite easily. I still am not sure what happened. I knew I was in trouble at mile 5 as I was sweating profusely. I finished 4 minutes off my pace after holding pace until mile 19.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:

Stayed relatively healthy this year. Still managing my glute, which feels like I have a lifetime sentence with it.

I really started to increase my hill workouts. I searched out hilly terrain to strengthen my legs.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

I really cherished the people I have met through running this year. Whether it was the RT82 guys or others I've met in this group. I have a fun local running club that I run with once or twice a week when I'm not training for anything.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:
A few jump out to mind.
1. It was awesome to see all the guys do amazing work in the KT82 relay. It was very hot and challenging but everyone competed and we were able to take that masters crown (barely....won by less than a minute IIRC). Highlight was @Zasada absolutely crushing his longer run in the middle of the afternoon. I think he ran that 45 seconds per mile faster than what he expected. In those conditions, it was so bad ***.

2. Awesome to see @bushdocda run a great race in Berlin. So fun to hang out afterwards. He's truly a great guy and know he's got that sub 3:20 in him in 2023!

3. Everytime I read the race reports of the 100 mile runners or the Ironman Triathalon, I just sit in amazement of what you guys are doing. Truly inspiring.....but not so much that I want to do either of those things!

Goal(s) for 2023:

1. I'd like to attempt another Marathon PR in fall 2023. I honestly don't know if my PR days are over at the age of 52, but I will see. Definitely want to BQ.
2. I'd like to take a run at my half marathon PR if I can fit it in during my training cycle for my marathon. I think its pretty soft (1:31:26), so would like to knock it down a minute or two.
3. I am likely doing the R2R2R with at least a couple guys from here in October. A new challenge which gets me excited.
4. I'd like to do 750 Peloton workouts this year.
5. I'd like to run 2300 miles if possible.

6. Keep my weight at 180 lbs. or below by December 2023.
7. Try not to buy any running shoes. I have 10 new pairs in boxes and I just need to work through those this year. (For the record, its not all my fault. I was blessed to have 6 pairs sent to me free of charge from shoe companies, so that wasn't part of my shoe inventory plan.)

I'm gonna run as frequently as mother nature will allow between now and then (i.e. not this weekend  )
Was just checking your weekend forecast out of morbid curiosity - yikes. I'm considering bailing on my Saturday run here, and we'll have about 15 degrees and 15mph less wind than you :lmao:

Maybe you can have the wife drop you off along the lake and break a bunch of segment records with the tailwind, lol.

 Just hafta pick a route far enough uphill from the lake to dodge the storm surge, but void of trees that will inevitably crash down upon me and split me into pieces.

I bailed at lunch yesterday for an hour of hills and trails. Planning to do the same today for SoS of TBD length. Cause I'm gonna have at least 3 days off to rest!

Yeah, work got in the way of me squeezing anything in yesterday, which was our last good weather day here for a while. I'm hoping to get out today during a dry pocket before the cold hits, but it's a steady wintry mix right now.

I made that mistake once. I stopped looking as it would otherwise keep me from posting about my ****ty weather.
There's a part of me that wonders if everything I've written about summer running in the past is a placebo effect sorta thing. I convince myself devil's door step conditions aren't so bad for fall marathon training purposes cause relatively speaking on America's North Coast it's...slightly better than the alternative.

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report – 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

From last year’s report, my goals were:

I’d love to get to 2,000 miles again. Check – I am going to hit 2,300+ this year
I am not sure what my work life is going to be like quite yet, but my plan is to run a HM in April and *maybe* the full again in the fall. Goals are to F-U-C-K-I-N-G CRUSH MY PRS! Check - Ran both the HM and Full Marathon and did crush my PRs. More than I expected on the HM, and not the way I wanted on the Full.
Oh, and have fun. Check(ish) – I definitely had moments of fun while running. But, this was a year of a lot of training with both the HM and Full on the schedule.
Oh, and maybe Monumental? - Check

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:

Cap City Half Marathon – 1:31:44. This was a vast improvement over my previous PR of 1:40:53 in the virtual Chief D HM we did in 2020. My goal had been to finish at a 7:20ish pace at 1:36-1:37, so knocking of ~5 minutes from that and coming in at a 6:59 pace was pretty sweet.

Monumental Marathon – 3:40:31. Beat my previous PR of 3:56:26 by about 16 minutes. On paper, that looks good, but I wanted to get in at 3:20.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

No doubt it was the entire Cap City Half Marathon. I had done a lot of good training and was ready to roll for this race. I ran the race I wanted, negative split it, and pulled the trigger to kick it in another gear about half way through. Ran the back half faster than I thought possible and at a pace I had not been training for. This race showed me I have a lot more in me than what I think.

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

Monumental. Although I got a PR, I was 20 minutes slower than my goal. The ~2 miles of walking was some really mentally painful ****. The day just was not meant to be with the temps being 25-30 degrees warmer than normal, rain, and wind that picked up as the day went on and then punched me in the face with huge gusts on the back half. I can 100% say that I gave it my all. Just a disappointment after all the work I put in.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:

All record highs for me and no significant injuries (COVID is not even holding me back this time! -- also knock on wood):

  • 2,300+ miles
  • ~320 runs
  • 20,000+ elevation gain
  • 340 hours

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

I can do more than I think I am capable of.

The highs of running are really high (HM PR) and the lows of running can really hurt (walk of shame in the Monumental). Both provide opportunities to learn and adjust.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:

Relay, Steel Curtain and buschdocda running in Berlin, jshare and MAC_32 getting healthy enough to get back out there and putting up great runs, Zasada dropping HM and 100k bombs on us, and everyone putting in the work who was healthy enough to do so. It was also great to meet Iggy and grue in person.

Goal(s) for 2023:

I am going to race something, and I am not sure what at this point. Minimum will be 1 HM, max will be 1 HM and 1 Full (2 HMs are also on the table). If I can keep some sort of semblance of conditioning, I may want to try and get a Full in during the spring.

Depending on what I run, the goals will likely be <1:30 HM and <3:20 FM.

:kicksrock: got on the trainer this morning. Maybe 8 minutes into the ride the rolling blackouts hit our neighborhood. They shouldn’t last long but that timing is ridiculous.

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Goals were very general; health, improve strength, and do more with the local tri club. I’ll call it a success for the most part. I’m stronger than I was and mostly healthy. Got COVID in November which sucked - more because I gave it to my parents than my own. it didn’t affect me much which is attributable to general health imo.
For races, continued success in local races was fun. Not having a bike most of the summer wasn’t fun and meant not doing many rides with the local team.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2021:

None really. Which I’m perfectly happy with.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Relay tri with an older friend, then doing a metric century with him on my new tri bike.

A race or race training disappointment during 2021:

I’ve reached the point where I know I’m not getting back to top run shape. And I’m very much okay with that. But it does hit the psyche a bit.

Total training volume and successes during 2021:

I’ll cross over 400 hours next week. Plus probably another 300 if I included walking the dogs. 2022km running, I’ll cross over 2022 miles cycling.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

The biggest thing that I knew but really felt this year is that training and racing is a means, not the goal itself. Health - physical, mental, emotional, is far more important.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2021:

I’ve absolutely sucked at keeping up in this thread this year.

Goal(s) for 2022:
Health of course. To volunteer at 3 races.

I’m going to implement a new 25 day challenge each month. December was pull-ups. January will probably be planks or push-ups. I’ll tentatively set a schedule but adjust each month. The idea is to gradually increase for 25 days and then rest the rest of the month, start the next one up on the first.
If y’all are interested, I’ll get an excel sheet going to track. No need to do every month, but it would be a lot more fun if others joined me each month.

Just got my Strava year end report. Told me I was in top 3% of Strava users. That feels impressive.

Tri goals for 2023?

I'm done with COVID v2 - 2 negative tests 24 hours apart.

This one was really nothing. Slightly congested with a hoarse voice and a super mild headache for one day, then that was it. I work from home, so that didn't get disrupted. Just quarantined in the bedroom and home office for ~5 days then wore an N95 around the family (this sucked on Xmas eve and Xmas day).

Honestly, having no symptoms made staying isolated terrible because I felt completely fine. I did sneak down to the treadmill and ran just about every day.

If my wife hadn't tested positive a couple days before me I never even would have tested myself with these low level symptoms.

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

The goal (following Boston ’21) was to focus on strength and flexibility and then to pick up some races along the way. For the primary objective, I failed. I just ran, per normal, without specific focus on stride length and cadence and without supplemental support work.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:

The best accomplishment was informally coaching my university’s top female XC runner as she took top five in the conference and performed well at regionals. Her skill far exceeded the team’s training routines, and I helped her to fill in the gaps for a few weeks near season's end. I’ve never actively coached a runner before, so this was very rewarding. More on this below.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Not racing, but very pleased to meet and/or reconnect with a number of the guys. Met @AAABatteries and @-OZ- while driving to a Florida conference, and reconnected with @Sand and his wife. Met @Zasada and @bushdocda at the St. Louis relay and reconnected with our marvelous host, @gianmarco, as well as @gruecd , and @SteelCurtain . Also spent the day of the Chicago marathon with @gianmarco , his marathoning better half, @Juxtatarot and @Brony

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

…but Florida timing didn’t quite work out to have dinner with @JShare87 and his wife. :kicksrock:

Racing-wise, I had my two minutes of shame during the St. Louis relay. I slipped away to warm up for leg two and mis-timed my return to take the baton from @SteelCurtain . Most fortunately, we still won our division, but that mistake haunts me still.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:

I’ll finish the year with about 1,380 miles and 22K feet of elevation …deliberately a lower mileage year but with, for me and this mileage, decent elevation.

5 races (2 HMs and 3 5Ks) during the year, and 5 AG wins. The times weren’t anything great, though, as I didn’t properly train for any of them. Most enjoyable was catching a 5K in Huntsville, AL during my southern tour. Kinda funny that at two of the 5Ks, I was being stalked by other runners who were (properly) worried that I might be in their AG.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

I finally began to focus on strength and flexibility over these past several weeks, and I’m already seeing some benefits in a slightly slower cadence (with normal paces). I’m still convinced I have significant room for improvement by working on my stride, and I have eighteen months to make it happen before the next marathon training cycle.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:

Watching @Zasada furiously chase down a random runner at the end of a leg in St. Louis (“I’m gonna f@@@@@@ beat her”), and then watching @bushdocda bring it home strong to give us the division win.

I’ll echo what others have already said about some impressive PRs this year as well as @SteelCurtain's pacing skills. I’m always in awe of our Ironmen and what they’ve achieved.

Goal(s) for 2023:

For me, continued work on strength and flexibility. I’d like to get my average cadence to be consistently below 180. With no primary races planned, I’m simply targeting mileage over 1,500, and elevation in the new, hillier suburb to be over 30,000.

For my young protege, Ashley, the plan is to help her use a year of training to compete for the conference individual championship; succeed in regionals and qualify for nationals; and ideally, run top 40 at nationals (in Carlisle, PA) and become a D III All-American.

Gonna finish the year around 5,600 -5,700 miles on the bike. Last year I finished at 5330 miles, but more hours on the bike last year (323 hrs) vs this year (316 hr YTD). I guess this means that I did a very consistent time on saddle but went a little faster this year. Sounds about right.

I'm content to keep biking as a recreational exercise thing. I like going faster and seeing some returns from my invested time, but I also don't really have interest in doing structured training. I find that I naturally will sprinkle in Something of Substance days without much thought to it. I enjoy pushing myself, but not in specified intervals. If that limits my progress, well that's fine as I have no goals or races. This may come across as defeatist, but I've now done this long enough to know what will keep me getting on the bike every day and still enjoy the hobby. Which I do - still look forward to weekend long rides and Zwift events. I'm finding that 2 to 3 hours is about the sweet spot where enjoyment turns into drudgery. Only significant change for 2022 vs past years is that a 30 to 40 mile ride used to seem like a big deal for me and now it's just another Saturday.

Though I'm not running, I still like to follow the exploits of the crew here. Memorable to follow the KT relay, Zasada's R2R2R event, hawaii triathlons, JShare's comeback, Tri's medal mongering and Gianmarco's SO Chicago marathon. I continue to be inspired. Great stuff gents!

Damn impressive!

Let’s see if the link works for my monthly challenges

The first column is just an example. I don’t really plan on a 10 minute plank on the last day.
Looks good but it's set up as read only at the moment. You would have to make it so we could all input our info if we want to participate.

Which I plan to do.
Thanks. Should work now

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

  1. Finish a 100km race -- rolled from 2021
  2. Complete a Prairie Mountain ascent in 41:59 or less -- rolled from 2021
    • FAIL -- tried to PR (<45 minutes) a couple days ago and failed at that, this is a tough one I'm finding
  3. Reclaim the CR on the Mount Burke ascent (or beat 1:01:09 if CR gets reset before I get to it) -- rolled from 2021
    • FAIL -- didn't even get out to Burke this summer, ugh
  4. Run a <100 minute HM (preferably Vegas R&R in Feb) -- rolled from 2021
  5. (Bonus) run a IRL race with at least one FBG 10K #BMFer -- rolled from 2021

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:

What a fantastic year. Injury-free (so lucky). I'm so fortunate to have been able to do so much:
  • First 100K
  • HM PR (1:32:36)
  • Second 100K
  • KT82 Masters Team win
  • Moose Mountain 26K PR
  • R2R2R
  • 5,000+ km (3,100+ miles) for the year (PR)
  • 79,000m (259,000') in elevation gain for the year (PR)
My individual highlight for the year came in the first week. Not knowing if I could even finish 100K, and then driving back to the hotel, in the dark, calling my wife and shouting "I F***ING DID IT"!!!) was literally memorable. It gave me confidence for the rest of the year that enabled so much more. Many thanks for @gianmarco for his "nudge" to get me to race this (and others in 2022).

My overall highlight was KT82. What a great group of guys to run with. And to work hard for "hardware" (still have our free cup reward for the masters win). It was SO HOT that day, but cheering on each of the team and spending the day with them is another literal memorable moment.

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

I had such a lucky year it feels ungrateful to highlight anything negative here, so I won't. One lesson I learned in 2021 was to not complain about running conditions. Being uninjured and able to run is something I should be thankful for. Even if it's 80F with 95% humidity before sunrise in DFW, or -29F and I'm getting frostbite on my nose and chin in YYC.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:

Covered above.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

So many of the 10K FBGs have been dealing with injuries in 2022, that the biggest lesson I learned is to be grateful for being able to run and set PRs. And @gianmarco taught me to have more faith in myself and get to the start line, despite nagging doubts I have come race week.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2021:

Many things I will miss here, sorry guys.

The best memory I have is at the end of the last leg of KT82. @bushdocda was on his anchor run, and we had moved the van to near the finish line. We gathered up about 100 meters from the end to cheer him. My mental state was to get into "celebration mode", with high-fives and laughs as @bushdocda ran. But he would have NONE OF THAT. The look on his face was "I'm not at the finish line, MFers, stop smiling", and all he could blurt out was "WHERE DO I GO???" as he pushed his pace. We hurriedly pointed him around the corner, he crossed the finish line, and THEN he was ready to celebrate the finish. That look on his face was one of someone who wasn't f***cing around. Awesome, and burned in my memory.

Mrs. Gian killing her training and running Boston. What a great victory lap.

@JShare87 bouncing back from injury, dealing with multiple setbacks and bad days. It was tough seeing some Strava runs where his knee wasn't cooperating. But great to see the runs when it was. He kept going back, though. Unwilling to accept defeat. #BMF.

@MAC_32 same thing -- bouncing back from being HIT BY A CAR. 2022 was a recovery year for him, and can't wait to see what he's got for 2023.

@bushdocda and @SteelCurtain running Berlin. Lived vicariously through them.

Goal(s) for 2023:

Still going to roll the failures from 2022:
  1. Finish a 100km race (registered for Miwok) -- requalify for WSER lottery
  2. Complete a Prairie Mountain ascent in 41:59 or less -- rolled from 2022 (and the two years before it)
  3. Reclaim the CR on the Mount Burke ascent (or beat 1:01:09 if CR gets reset before I get to it) -- rolled from 2022
  4. Qualify for Boston -- <3:25 full marathon
  5. Complete a 100-miler (not yet registered for one, but need to get off my butt and pick one)
That's it for this year. Thanks to all of you for your support and positive reinforcement. I can't understate how much of a difference it makes. My self-doubt is my biggest enemy, and having you guys there to push me forward is huge.

13th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2022

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Pulling a couple nuggets from a year ago me to help me out…

“I have to identify and minimize weaknesses through strengthening even if at the detriment of volume…It’s my core that is weak, it leads to too much stress on everything else.”

This led me to perform hundreds of short core and stretching sessions and paid off big time. Still lots to do.

“Health is #1 to support upping mileage with a bump to my base and a bump to my training peak miles.”

I did not bump my base by much nor my peak but stayed consistent with both even with the hours traded for non running activities.

“Race times will be an outcome, the desired outcomes are a 5k PR in first half of year and a marathon PR in the second half of the year. The sub 20 min 5k goal has been a couple years now and it’s getting done this time. “

✅✅

“I also want to enjoy more start lines and if possible race days with some FBG crew.”

This was the best. KT82 with the crew and Berlin with @SteelCurtain and Richmond with @pbm107 . Really truly makes running mean even more to me. 2023 running schedule hopefully includes some meet ups.

“Hitch on to some group runs / run club stuff locally. I think this will be good for me.”

Gonna do better here but I’ve joined a local club and met a few folks to link up with more in 2023

Accomplishments or PRs in 2022:
5k - 19:47
Marathon - 3:23:18
KT relay victory with the team
First 2x marathon year (Steel : yawn)

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

On those PR days, I am thinking of the last portions where you go to the well. It’s what it all comes down to. I had something to go to and the training, strategy, guts came together. Turning onto the last straight in Berlin with the Brandenburg Gate was a thrill and even more so being able to push it home. Juxtapose with not having that last topped off training in me on 2nd marathon. Profound learning moments.
The KT relay was big fun and big efforts in the heat. I was thrilled to get the last leg and bring it home for the masters and the long hairs.

A race or race training disappointment during 2022:

I had 2 good swings at the BQ time with 2 different ways to start and finish the races. 1 with a goofy start and strong finish and 1 with a good start and a fading finish. I am good at gathering and learning from experience and I got a lot to learn on in 2022. Fading down the stretch in November marathon remains a disappointment that I’ll turn to motivation to strength train after runs to develop more fatigue resistance.

Total training volume and successes during 2022:
YoY metrics look good-

2022 Volume vs 2021 - 2,001 miles down 3% 🥴

2022 Avg pace 9:04 down 9 secs vs 2021😎

2022 Avg HR 130 vs 129 2021 😎

2022 Elevation 58,655 up 14.9% 😎

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

Another callback to last year…

“Staying healthy is easier than getting healthy. Warmups, post run stuff and strength work is what it takes for me to stay on track”

Shoot this in my veins. And in my PTs bank account.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2022:

@Zasada ultras and R2R2R were bonkers and he’s just getting stronger. The Ironmans jump out and blow my mind. Looking at the race calendar, so many of you put out big performances to cash in on solid training - you love to see it. Raceday support and tracking is just the coolest. The shared experiences make it matter.

The guys working through injuries and setbacks are coming into 2023 with things looking up ↗️

Goal(s) for 2023:
1- Longer long runs and mostly easy effort with strides and hills for the variety. This will be a long and wave based build. Will monitor resting HR and AHR for feedback along with volume. All goes well I’ll hit a new high score for annual miles.

2- I’m starting fresh with body weight and imbalance assessment in Dec and Jan and will get on a sustainable path to getting stronger. I’ll get on to KBs and then to pull-ups and a half decent deadlift but have to clean up a messy shoulder and horrific lack of lunge strength first. Will monitor and compare Ground Contact Time metric for improvement translates into running. Shooting for 10 pull-ups.

3- Eat more at the right times. I am generally hangry in life I am now recognizing. I can improve on quantity and quality of calories to support my life better and more evenly.

4- BQ shot in September. I tried to avoid it coming down to 1 raceday for my 2024 entry but I would be racing for a buffer even if I had hit the 45 yo mark in 2022.

Sign up for Erie on 9/10/2023 opens on 1/1 - see you there??

Items 1,2,3 above will have me in a good place to absorb marathon focus training. I am going to do it.

I’ll have some other race days along the way mostly for fun and as long runs but will be very focused on Sept.

It’s been a mellow December getting my body to come back around, toenails and all are doing well. Ready to do the work.

The support shared here is special, thanks for letting me be a part of it and let’s keep going.

Juxtatarot's Year-End Report

Albeit with few highlights, I view the year as successful.

Only 1,685 miles. That’s the lowest since I started keeping track. Most of those miles were in the back half as I struggled recuperating from 2021 injuries and then missed five weeks with a broken big toe.

The encouraging thing is I was able to set an official 5K PR (17:29) for the Turkey Trot despite the lighter workload. I’ve run 25-30 5Ks over the years including cycles when I was setting marathon PRs and running 70 mile weeks. I very rarely got even to 50 this year. It reassures me that the changes I’ve made over the years are helping.

I’m probably more healthy now than I have been in several years. I’m not 100%. At 52 years old, I probably won’t ever be 100%. It will be more about managing the issues that pop up as well as the ones that are ever-present. I hope I’m getting better with that. I’m definitely feeling my age but it’s not that bad yet.

So, I think I can still improve. At least, that’s my goal. My next step is to increase mileage a little and see what happens. If things go well, I’ll pick a half marathon in the spring. Maybe a 5K or 10K too. We’ll see. Hopefully I’ll run another marathon again someday but it’s not a big deal for me at the present. I guess I prioritize speed over distance.

Happy New Year to everyone! I continue to appreciate the advice, encouragement and friendship in this thread.
