SCIENTISTS DISCOVER "SUPERWORMS" THAT CAN SURVIVE ON EATING JUST STYROFOAM

An international group of researchers have discovered that "superworms," a species of worms that can be at least five times the size of mealworms and wax worms, are pretty damn good at digesting Styrofoam.

In other words, these worms could help us break down plastic — wriggly bioreactors that could greatly cut down the time it takes for plastic to biodegrade.

There's bacteria at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico that feed on petroleum. Which is good because there are over 2,000 old oil wells that are leaking down there.

we have been kicking some serious ### in the battle against cancer in the last few months! You FLOVE to see it!

Scientists harness light therapy to target and kill cancer cells in world first

The light-activated therapy forces cancer cells to glow in the dark, helping surgeons remove more of the tumours compared with existing techniques – and then kills off remaining cells within minutes once the surgery is complete. In a world-first trial in mice with glioblastoma, one of the most common and aggressive types of brain cancer, scans revealed the novel treatment lit up even the tiniest cancer cells to help surgeons remove them – and then wiped out those left over.

Brain-machine interface helped a man with paralysis feed himself using robotic arms

People with arm paralysis might easily feed themselves in the future. Johns Hopkins University-led researchers have developed a new technique that let a partially paralyzed man feed himself using robotic arms connected through a brain-machine interface. He only had to make small movements with his fists at certain prompts (such as "select cut location") to have the fork- and knife-equipped arms cut food and bring it to his mouth.

A shapeshifting swarm of tiny robots could one day brush, rinse, and floss your teeth.  :brush:

The building blocks of these microrobots are iron oxide nanoparticles that have both catalytic and magnetic activity. Using a magnetic field, researchers could direct their motion and configuration to form either bristle-like structures that sweep away dental plaque from the broad surfaces of teeth, or elongated strings that can slip between teeth like a length of floss. In both instances, a catalytic reaction drives the nanoparticles to produce antimicrobials that kill harmful oral bacteria on site. Experiments using this system on mock and real human teeth showed that the robotic assemblies can conform to a variety of shapes to nearly eliminate the sticky biofilms that lead to cavities and gum disease.

...

“Nanoparticles can be shaped and controlled with magnetic fields in surprising ways,” says Edward Steager, a senior research investigator in Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-corresponding author. “We form bristles that can extend, sweep, and even transfer back and forth across a space, much like flossing. The way it works is similar to how a robotic arm might reach out and clean a surface. The system can be programmed to do the nanoparticle assembly and motion control automatically.”

This technology would be a great boon to the blocked artery/heart disease crowd.  Can you imagine just checking into the hospital,  getting hooked up to a couple machines, and just lay there for 2-3 days as shape shifting vacuums clean your arteries.

The Oldest Footage of New Orleans Has Been Found Previously only rumored to exist, the two-minute film depicts a Mardi Gras parade from 1898

The two-minute, 68-millimeter film was shown publicly this month at the Louisiana State Museum, and it will be incorporated into an exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Rex Organization.

cc: @Doug B, @worrierking -- pretty cool!
Love old footage like this. I can't find it right now but there was video taken just before the San Francisco earthquake that was both funny and sad, due to what happened a couple days later.  The combination of pedestrians, horses & buggies, cable cars, and motor cars all going in random directions with no stop signs or traffic lights. Just crossing the street really was taking your life in your own hands.

Bay Area startup Earthgrid says it's developing a plasma boring robot that can dig underground tunnels 100x faster and up to 98% cheaper than existing tech, and it plans to use it to start re-wiring America's energy, internet and utilities grids.
The contactless cutting discs have plasma torches mounted in a Fibonacci spiral pattern, such that they cover the entire area of the hole when the discs are rotated

Forget it, I didn't know the illuminati was involved. :tinfoilhat:

How do I find out if this is a publicly traded company?
No indication on their website. They're a startup. So I would say, they aren't.
I do love this from their website https://www.earthgrid.io/:

"The process uses no fossil fuels or combustion, and the electricity is sourced from 100% clean renewable energy. Our 2 business models are:

BADASS - Boring And Drilling As a Simple Service for customers who want to own their tunnels and/or

BOOM - Build Own Operate & Maintain for customers who prefer to simply sign a long-term lease or tolling agreement covering the commodities flowing thru our tunnels (EarthGrid PBC covers 100% of all costs of development, construction, operation, etc.)"

I saw that too. If they're not already churning out tshirts and hats with BADASS on it, they're missing out!

CHINESE SCIENTISTS SHOW OFF LASER THAT CAN WRITE WORDS IN MID-AIR

Scientists at Hongtuo Joint Laboratory in Wuhan, China, have invented what sounds like a mysterious yet fascinating laser pen that can write in mid-air — an intriguing approach that could, theoretically, be an onramp to "Star Wars"-esque hologram technology.

The South China Morning Post reported yesterday that the pen uses ultra-short laser pulses to strip the electrons from air particles and turn them into light-emitting plasma with sufficient precision to form words in mid-air.

Saudi Crown Prince wants to build a 75-mile-long skyscraper

The two buildings, if completed, will reach 1,600 feet into the sky—likely near 150 stories—and will run parallel for 75 miles. The price tag on the complex? A jaw-dropping trillion dollars.

The Mirror Line is the pet project of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reports the Wall Street Journal.  It will house roughly 5 million people and will include a high-speed train under the buildings to let people move about in it.

Other amenities include a sports stadium, which will stretch 1,000 feet in the sky; a yacht marina; and vertical farming to ensure residents have enough food. Residents will pay a subscription to be served breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Somehow it's overall structure reminds me a little too much of a long row of dominos.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/07/28/texas-dead-spiders-necrobotic-grippers/10176634002/

Researchers at Rice University in Houston figured out how to give new life to dead spiders.

It turns out all you need is a needle, glue and a syringe.

Daniel Preston, a professor, and Faye Yap, a graduate student, at the Texas university's engineering school published a report in a science journal Monday about how their research team was able to successfully repurpose dead spiders as miniature grippers, not unlike the ones inside arcade claw machines.

Preston and Yap were able to turn the dead spiders in their research into miniature “necrobotic” grippers by pumping small amounts of air into their bodies.

They simply inserted a hypodermic needle into the spider’s body, sealed it with glue and attached the needle to a syringe, using it to control the flow of pressure into the spider’s body and through its legs.

Open. Close. Open. Close. No special lab equipment needed.

I saw this headline yesterday and didn't read, but couldn't understand why they'd even want to do this   but apparently there is method to their madness:

While the research is still in its infancy, Preston said the dead spider grippers have potential for real-world applications in “micro-scale manipulation,” such as picking up tiny electronic components.

“We’re also looking forward to the potential to use this for field work, where the intrinsic compliance of the fluidic gripping mechanism allows us to handle fragile or delicate samples,” Preston said. “And maybe even live insects or other bugs that we want to obtain in fieldwork.”

The wolf spiders used in the research were capable of grasping objects 130% of their own mass, according to the report. But Preston said he was excited about the prospect of using smaller spiders.

“We realized based on some mathematical scaling, that small spiders actually work better. They’ll have a higher ratio of gripping force to gripper weight,” Preston said.

Preston’s team said in its report that its grippers were an environmentally friendly alternative to man-made grippers, because they’re naturally biodegradable. The grippers tested were good for 1,000 grips before they started to show wear due to dehydration, according to the report, which hypothesized the spider grippers’ durability could be extended by applying a special coating.

How 3 Particles Left on D.B. Cooper’s Tie Could Finally Nail Down the Skyjacker’s Identity

A 10-year-old scientific report on the case, commissioned by the FBI, offered up information on more than 100,000 particles lifted from the tie D.B. Cooper left on seat 18-E before jumping from the Boeing 727’s rear staircase with the cash and parachutes. According to a July 20 Seattle King 5 report, Ulis (an amateur sleuth from Arizona) noticed that three pieces of an alloy made of titanium and antimony, two Earth elements, are among those particles. His research on the unique alloy led him to Rem-Cru, a Midland, Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of titanium-antimony. The now-defunct company’s assets have been sold over the decades, and Ulis says he’s working to obtain additional historical records on the company.

“I believe that we have identified not only the company where D.B. Cooper came from, but also the specific division within the company that D.B. Cooper came from,” Ulis, who has been working on the skyjacking case for 14 years, tells King 5. “I’ve been looking for something that I would call a tantamount to commercial DNA, the idea being that just as human DNA points to a specific individual, commercial DNA close to a specific company [can identify that company], and indeed, I actually found three particles of a very unique and very rare alloy.”

Ulis also says he’s locked in one specific person of interest.

I thought the new Netflix documentary series on D.B. Cooper was interesting. It briefly mentions the tie.

A band of billionaires, including Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg and Bill Gates, among others, is betting that below the surface of the hills and valleys on Greenland's Disko Island and Nuussuaq Peninsula there are enough critical minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles.

No telling what they might find.

There was some mining show a few years ago where people were looking for and finding rubies and other precious gems on glacier covered islands. IIRC it only lasted a season or two.

Ice Cold Gold. The geologist guy from that is now on Mysteries of Blind Frog Ranch, and the cowboy hat wearing gold hunter brothers have been on several episodes of different shows looking for lost gold mines and treasures.

Vincent van Gogh: Hidden self-portrait discovered by X-ray

A previously unknown self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh has been discovered hidden on the back of another painting.

Experts at the National Galleries of Scotland made the find when the canvas was X-rayed before an exhibition.

The hidden self-portrait was covered by layers of glue and cardboard on the back of an earlier work called Head of a Peasant Woman.
Curious if it's known how much the woman print was worth and how much it has increased in value after all this. Crazy to think about 2 Van Gogh's within one frame.

Curious why you think this? Not disagreeing because I have no idea, but the article says this mini-city would have no cars and zero pollution.

5 million people will be making pollution. Cars or not.
I think it's a cool idea though. Bet it never happens.

But all 5 million of those people would be living SOMEWHERE causing the same pollution + having a car likely. And if there's a focus on the idea of no cars/zero pollution then I'm sure the city would be built with pollution efficiencies that other already developed cities won't have. So, there is a net gain here by having this amount of people all in an efficient city like this versus scattered amongst non-efficient cities adding waste to them.

Off the top of my head they will have a continuous building that, based on the model, will block water access to local wildlife in a desert. It's mirrors, in the desert, the outside area is likely to be much hotter, and birds will fly into it because mirrors.
