Randy McMichael vs. Houston (1 Viewer)

Gates has been downgraded to doubtful and it looks as if he won't play, if Gates does not play I think McMichael might be a sneaky TE play against a HOU team that has problems covering TE's.

Anyone rolling with him?

there's already another thread on this

I might not have a choice, with Finley gone and now Miller is out, he seems to be about the only choice I have left for this week. Can anyone say anything good or bad about him??? He used to be, I emphasize "used", a very good pass catching TE!!!! With all the injuries, it would seem only logical that he would get his share of targets?!?! It's either him or Fasano....GOD help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna roll with him. I just traded Gates away for the best value I thought I could get... and picked up Randy for this week... I think it could be a shootout. I think the targets will be there... what he does with them I'm not so sure.

But I picked him up over Fasano and am hoping for 4-50 with a distant possiblity of a redzone look or 2.

I just don't see Rivers suddenly abandoning the TE target.

As I stated in the other Gates thread, Rivers only targeted the TE twice after Gates left the St Louis game in the 1st half in Week 6. McMichael got 2 targets and 0 receptions.

First off, I think McMicheal has enough FF relevance to have it's own thread at least this week, given the number of quality TE's who are on byes/injured. Pretty slim pickins. I don't know if week 6 has much bearing on this week. I read that Gates has only practiced once in the last three weeks. I surmise or guess that McMicheal has taken those practice snaps and now has more experience with Rivers, if indeed, that is the case. Has McMicheal been getting those practice snaps? SD homers know?

I have seen Gates get all but ignored for a half at a time as well. Still, he got his targets in the second half. Given the lack of targets Rivers has, along with an relatively weak rushing attack, will Rivers ignore the TE's role in the SD offense if Gates can't go on Sunday? Can he afford to? Against a weak pass defense like Houston? Keep in mind also that the Houston LB corp is still unsettled with Cushing moving to the middle. With no Gates, does it make even more sense to look to get McMicheal mismatched against an LB in coverage? McMicheal certainly won't draw as much attention as Gates gets.

It's all moot if Gates plays, even in a limited role this week. I'm in a bind at TE in a start 2 flex TE heavy scoring league with Davis on a bye. If Gates is ruled out as a game time decision I'll role with McMicheal and hope for a perfect storm... it could happen. Sorry.... I hate those "my team" regressions...but I am not immune. I imagine many others are in the same situation.

Even if McMichael has been taking 1st team snaps in practice, I doubt that the Chargers are planning to work him into the game plan. If he has more than 2 or 3 targets I'll be surprised. Gate's targets will be distributed elsewhere. Sproles, Crayton, Seyi, Tolbert, Hester, Mathews, etc. There were 14 receptions divided by 4 different RB's last week. Rivers will have plenty of options.

So, you believe the plays they have installed for Gates will be shelved and removed from the offensive game plan completely if he can't start? I don't think Nolan is that clueless. If anything, I would expect the opposing defense to alter their game plan more than SD would, and that lack of attention to the TE position should, I would think, allow for mismatches should ANY TE start for SD other than Gates. Offensive game plans are all about mismatches, especially in the passing game. If Houston throws an LB in man coverage on the SD TE, that's a mismatch. Even better if the Houston D is more worried about RB's coming out of the backfield. I'll be surprised if the SD TE gets less than a minimum of 5 targets. Rivers likely has more practice sbnaps with McMicheal than half of the targets you mentioned if McMicheal has in fact been getting all those 1st team snaps for 3 weeks running. McMicheal still is something of a down field threat. He's no Gates, but one big game? I think it's quite possible given the circumstances.

Sincerely, I wish you good luck. I hope he helps you win this week. Just not real confident he will. It's kind of like Donald Lee or Quarless replacing Finley.

LOL... I am not saying he's going to have a good week, but given how the crop of TE's playing this week has been looking, the risk is small but the long shot of lightning in a bottle is there. No Gates, Davis, Clark and a bunch of very inconsistant low end TE's with an exception or two like Witten. I'll be surprised if any TE has a good week, but if ONE of them has a chance to blow up, my guess is McMicheals. Now of course, Schinacoe will do a zombie imitation, have a big week, and I'll be all wrong. GB and Rodgers still had and has other targets at WR. I don't see that with SD. Goin with a hunch, and those usually don't hit, but once in a while....

If the TEs are injured in this game, then Diressen>>>>McMichael. JD has solid rapport with Schaub, McMichael hasnt shown it with Rivers.

That being said, the opportunity will be there for both of these guys if there are injuries so a TD or two is a possibility for either and worth a flyer if youre stuck.

not exactly. It wasn't too long ago that people around these parts were calling McMichael a top 5 TE talent. He's had a couple of impressive seasons in his own right - granted, they were 5-6 years ago but he knows how to make plays. Not saying he's going to have a big day but for those of us with VD or Miller on BYE, he's worth a shot as a one week filler - at least more so that Fasano, or Fells, or... well hopefully you get the point.

Turns out Quarless was in street clothes Friday... maybe Donald Lee is the guy worth a shot.

People forget why McMicheals fell into the abyss of FF irrelavence. He spent the last 3 years playing for the Rams. He missed most of the 2008 season, and while the Rams had only 12 TD passes last year, McMicheal managed to get one out of that dozen. Even S Jackson didn't have a TD catch last year. Avery had 5, Fells had 3. It's not easy to score FF points on such a terrible team as the Rams had been. The Rams had only one reciever with over 400 yards last year. Avery at 589. Jackson led all recievers with 51 receptions. That offense was historically bad. At 31, I doubt he's done. Gates is 30. If McMicheal is to ever have another good game in the NFL, this would likely be the week for it. McMicheal hasn't had a real QB throwing the ball to him in 4 years.

I thought long and hard about McMichael, and it hurt, but I just think that Gates will play some if not all of the game and thus, I went with Olsen!!!! I'm sure y'all will be able to get on with your day knowing that.......

Not to make this a WDIS, but for me it would depend on my opponent. If this week's opponent has a very strong roster, I gamble on the possible higher upside McMicheal might have. High risk, high reward play. If all I need from my TE this week is a solid showing, I'd start another TE. For me, I have Davis on a bye, and Gates, so I'll play McMicheal if Gates is inactive. (BTW, it's a TE flex double TE yardage league, and I went Gates early and Davis was one of two keepers). Because of that, there is nothing on the WW in the way of TE's.

As I stated in the other Gates thread, Rivers only targeted the TE twice after Gates left the St Louis game in the 1st half in Week 6. McMichael got 2 targets and 0 receptions.
And how'd that work for them? Their offense is geared around the TE. With a week to prepare I would think that they will go to the TE more this week if Gates isn't there.

Dont trust him... I am going with Ben Watson instead

Well, after the latest reports from Kevin Acee, the SD beat writer... my guess is Gates is active, is horribly ineffective and neither McMicheal or Gates will do much of anything. :banned:

Once in a while, logic can rule the day even in FF. It doesn't happen often. SD, a TE heavy offense going against a defense that gives it up to TE's almost every week, McMicheal got few targets, but they counted in a big way. McMicheals was obviosly not Rivers' first target on the 1st TD, he checked down. I didnt see the second TD yet.

I think it was pretty silly of some posters to have completely discounted McMicheals' upside this week. It was there, the fact that it came through, well, that could have gone either way. Given the TE FF situation, I'd say it was a shark play. Thought so before the game was played. FF is still largely luck based. Kudos to Bloom who at least saw what I saw, and had McMicheals in his top 12 this week.

Good call, the guy I traded gates to picked him up, I would have but I picked up Tamme and have Z. Miller out, happened to be playing him this week so they pretty much evened each other out.

Is this the same McMichael who played for the Dolphins like 15 years ago? Didn't he play with Marino?
