Ray Rice's Domestic Abuse Presser Sends Wrong Message (1 Viewer)

Doesn't make that right either. Due process is an important element of a fair and just society. And to take away economic livlihood without a fair process, IMO, is not right
I'd like to see pro sports go with summary suspensions with pay for any felony arrest. Suspensions without pay would only be contingent upon convictions.

Of course, there are other ground rules at play that could lead to other kinds of suspensions without pay (e.g. while gambling is legal in Vegas, an NFL player making bets at a Vegas sports book might still be suspended).

AP reporting the NFL had the Rice video in their possession in April.
Hoo boy.

Interested to see if they opt for a stubborn denial nobody really believes, or if they prefer to have some low-level employee fall on the sword and pay him off on the side.
The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

Wow.

Her, apparently.

Goodell beginning of the end? :bye:
At the moment ... he has an out: "Well ... OK, someone at my office had it ... but I, personally never saw it."

Ehhh ... sounded OK until I typed it.
Believe Goodell has already said "no one at the NFL saw the tape". So he'll need to say "I didn't know someone at the NFL saw the tape."

And it's not like he has many fans with the direction he's been taking with rule changes, etc. Who really wants Goodell to survive this type of scandal? Basically nobody.

NFL statement:

"We have no knowledge of this. We are not aware of anyone who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday. We will look into it."

Wasn't there a different tape out earlier that just showed Rice dragging her around by the hair, but not the punch itself? Any chance that could be the one the AP's source is referring to? (Or at least, could Goodell spin it that way?)

Keep repeating that line, chumps. Maybe somebody will buy it.

Payton was suspended because it "happened on his watch." Goodell, meet Karma.
Yeah, no ####

And the spygate penalties for Belichick and Patriots as well

What incredible hypocrisy if Goodell acts like he should not be penalized in any way.

Some guy who works for the NFL who nobody likes and smells funny is cleaning out his desk right now. "Here's the tape!! Johnson!! Why didn't you show this to Mr. Goodell?"

And has he really done the owners any favors?
The NFL's financial outlook is on auto-pilot now. The owners could vote to pocket $44M/32 apiece, kick Goodell to the curb, and run the NFL without him. Have a rotating body of owners make executive decisions.

Damn... shouldn't be too hard for someone to get more info and figure out who the number belongs to now that blood is in the water. Pretty doubtful the person on the tape watched that video by them self too.

Wife and I are in a friendly league with some Facebook friends of hers. We took Rice as our RB3, I couldn't pass him up in whatever round it was. No one said anything. Monday after the video breaks, commish tells my wife he couldn't believe we drafted Rice and that we still haven't dropped him. I had already queued up a bunch of WW claims dropping Rice so I had no inclination to drop him right away just to appease this ####wit. Yesterday he tells my wife if we don't drop Rice, he's suspending us from the league on "morals" grounds. I want to tell this guy off so bad.

We picked up Malcolm Floyd.
I would have taken the suspension.
Post her roster so we can check criminal history.
Heck, post the commish's roster so we can point out all the criminals he has as well.

ESPN is on code red, NFL Network breaking down Gio Bernard's fantasy outlook vs. Falcons this weekend (they love his chances for a big game).

Chick on ESPN says they have not confirmed report.

(Translation: We weren't able to steal it from a non-ESPN reporter.)

I think the owners all love Goodell, he gets to be the public's punching bag while the owners avoid bad press. The is very little critism out there against Steve Bisciotti right now yet he was Rice's employer and that organization basically blamed the girl that got knocked out. Valuations and profits are through the roof and Goodell takes all the arrows...owners like their puppet quite a bit.

As I wrote on Monday, if they can prove Goodell lied about this, he's done.

That being said, almost nothing about this story makes any sense to me. Why didn't they act on the video if they had it? Why only a 2 game suspension? Why lie about the video? The NFL is one of the smoothest best run private organizations in the USA. To put it all at risk over one running back? I don't get it.

Goodell thinks like Stephen A Smith?

You can just see those dominoes starting to tumble. Once one owner gets uncomfortable enough to call for his head, there will be another, and another. This isn't dropping off of the media's radar like most stories do. Right now Rice is probably talking to a lawyer about suing the NFL. NOW already called for Goodell's head today. This thing will hit the tipping point quickly where he will just have no choice but to step down. Ultimately that will be the only way to begin to restore credibility to the league.

Because the NFL didn't (and still doesn't) actually care about domestic violence. Even if, by some miracle, the NFL isn't lying, Goodell decided that the video of Rice dragging his unconscious fiance out of an elevator warranted a 2 game suspension. I don't think Goodell thought she knocked herself out.
