RB Aaron Jones, MIN (1 Viewer)

Surprised people are talking smack on Jones as if he’s no good. I think he is gonna play well, nice and fresh. Will just be a matter of what split they run with. I could see him getting 60+. Williams was screwed having to try to “win the job” against Chicago and Minnesota.

Keep clinging to the assinine assumption of Jones taking over the field and getting 1000 yds. He’s limp waiting to happen and this is a full blown rbbc.

I will predict Aaron Jones will average at least 62.5 all purpose yards per game, putting him on 1000 yards per season if he played 16 games.

Lmazzofff ... stick to medicine cuz you don’t know rbs
Is that your claim?  Do you know rbs?

Please define "know".. like do you know their families and friends, their inseam/shoe size/deodorant preference? Or do you in some serious fashion claim to know a rb's future?  I just want to clarify before wading in here.

avoid at your own peril. thru his first 4 NFL games, let's compare Dalvin Cook and Aaron Jones..

Jones beats the snot out of Cook and it's not close

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2018/07/10/comparing-first-4-nfl-games-for-aaron-jones-and-dalvin-cook/

Jones' 5.6 per carry vs. 4.8 for Cook. NEARLY a YARD MORE per carry..both played 4 games. Both were top 11 RBs during that span. Both got hurt.so,then, why are we touting Cook who we already know is involved in a VERY big RBBC, when we dont equally tout Jones who is NOT in a RBBC?

check the schedule, people, Jones plays 4 of the easiest run defenses the next 4 weeks. and it's only going to get better from there.

 or dont.I'm just saying..

as Tony Dungy once said about a kicker: Money..Money..Money..

Yards per carry is the dumbest stat ever.

It completely removes the context in which the runs happened, and using it in your argument for something weakens your argument in my mind.

McCarthy on #Packers backfield with Aaron Jones returning: "Jamaal and Ty have played good football. I know what Aaron gives us, but his role will be secondary. Jamaal and Ty will be in the first slot."

Looks like we need to wait
Typical coach speak. “These guys have been here and not been suspended so I’m going to stand by them....until I see you rip off a couple big runs”

Mike McCarthy is not a rational coach. I wouldn’t dismiss his words, you’ll set yourself up for disappointment. If you own Jones you should attempt to give yourself a 2-4 week window to see how this plays out.

Rodgers endorsement of him is all I need. And double that down with a bad knee IMO.

Did Rodgers say something new? Tread lightly, I’m pretty sure he’s said nice things about all three backs. Yes, Jones (not counting for Darius Jackson) is the most talented back throw all the sample sizes but that doesn’t mean they’ll put him in an early position to succeed.

As an owner of Jones and Collins I must say, I'm getting a little nervous that the Packers love and use for Williams will be just like the Raven infatuation for the ultimate JAG- Buck Allen.

Same scenario as the Ravens, the coaches are blind to what everyone else sees, 1 back is FAR SUPERIOR than the others

This.  McCarthy is going to pass the ball at minimum 60% of the time, likely more and if you can't pass protect you won't be on the field period.  While Jones might be a slightly better RB than Williams and Montgomery (Might being the key word) if he can't pass protect like those 2 his PT will be limited.  Sorry by anyone pinning their hopes on Jones will be sorely disappointed.

What was illuminating? How often he faced a 6 man box? The only time he makes a move or breaks a tackle was the 2nd run which was against a bunch of guys who don't actually play in the NFL (4th quarter of week 4 of the preseason  :X ).
1st run - not even a gaping whole, but a gaping side of the field; no moves made, no tackles broken
2nd run - 4th quarter of preseason week 4... meaningless
3rd run - gaping hole, well blocked by WR; no moves made, no tackles broken
4th run - gaping hole, just has to run straight; no moves made, no tackles broken
5th run - nowhere to go up the middle, takes it outside to find no defenders; no moves made, no tackles broken
6th run - see 5th run description
7th run - ran straight; made a spin move, but the guy (#29) still tackled him
8th run - just followed the hole against a 6 man box; no moves made, no tackles broken

Jones is a decent back, but these runs remind me of typical youtube highlights - where the actual highlights are of good blocking or bad defense while the RB doesn't actually do anything special. I'd like to see Jones do something like this or this in just one of those runs. He didn't even do anything like this. We all know he's never going to be capable of this, so he needs to be able to at least juke. But hey, remember that one time Aaron Jones said Rodgers gave him a compliment in the huddle?

Here's the deal...

If you're a good enough runner, your pass-blocking skills are secondary & will be overlooked. If the Packers had Barry Sanders in his prime, he would be their feature back.

Now, Jones doesn't necessarily have to be Barry Sanders, but then again, he's not even close. Jones is a decent runner, a mediocre receiver, & a below-average pass-blocker.

I think there are some teams where Jones MIGHT be valued higher, but the Pack aren't one of them (at least not right now).

He did? Are you talking about his wardrobe during the press conference perhaps?
compared to how Jamaal Williams has been running, Ty was a breath of fresh air. He didn't look like a lead back but it was refreshing seeing a RB with some speed, cutting ability, and vision. So I suppose I should have said Montgomery looked relatively great compared to Williams.

You have some of the same concerns as I do with Jones. He doesn't have much in the way of escapability traits & that can be a death sentence for a smaller RB.

His hips aren't particularly loose & he's got an awful lot of "straight line" to his game. Jones isn't a scrub & he's got some things going for him, but his long-term upside is somewhat limited.

There wasn’t a run there that called for him to do an Abdullah juke unless you expect this to be Madden and he’s supposed to just mash the juke button for no reason.

The breakdown was funny too...

Did the 2nd run not count because he actually did the #### you said he couldn’t do?

Go watch the 3rd run again and/or google what a juke is. The Cowboy safety surely knows

4th run he loses points for a well blocked play that leads to a 46 yard TD. No need to juke. Hit the hole and score.

5th and 6th runs...again, no need to mash the juke button. Great job of bouncing it outside and getting big yards one and a TD on the other. But yeah, he didn’t juke in the open field so...Seems to be the same theme with the 7th and 8th runs too.

:lmao:  I honestly think that is part of what people expect RBs to actually do.

This comment reminds me of NFL Football 94 on Sega Genesis... you could push the spin button continuously and the guy would just constantly twirl in circles down the field, couldn't be tackled.

ETA: I don't think Jamaal Williams has a juke button

And I may be completely wrong about my assessment of the player but his breakdown is flat out wrong. Those runs showed a lot of positives from him. Good vision, speed, patience, agility etc. Also, wasn’t he coming off of knee injuries on a few of these runs? If so, I couldn’t tell.

Whether or not he gets the carries is the major unknown but the talent shows IMO. Just go to Twitter and search his name. You’ll see plenty of gifs and breakdowns of him and almost everything you read is the same about his abilities.

Um, no the 2nd run didn't count because he did those things against non-NFL players. I thought I made that clear. In case you missed it, that play occurred in the 4th preseason game in the 4th quarter. If those guys are lucky they are on practice squads right now.

And you kind of made my point - none of those runs called for a juke or broken tackle, which is exactly why they weren't impressive.

He didn't "lose points" for well blocked plays or wide open outside runs. I just don't find anything "illuminating" about running straight on a well blocked play or bouncing a play outside when there are not defenders on the outside. But obviously people in here are looking for an excuse to get hyped. A few well blocked plays, a few bad defensive schemes, and an old story about his first huddle seem to be enough for this not very picky hype train.

And I may be completely wrong about my assessment of the player but his breakdown is flat out wrong. Those runs showed a lot of positives from him. Good vision, speed, patience, agility etc.
O rly?

Where is the good vision? He bounced those plays outside because he had no other option. 9 times out of 10 a guy is on the edge to tackle him, but because the guy was out of position, it is suddenly a "highlight" play. A real highlight would be if he bounces a play to the outside and has to get past an unblocked defender, either by juking him like the AA example I linked or by running him over/breaking a tackle like the JW example I linked. Please tell me which run showed good vision.

The 6th run is the only one really showing good speed to get to the corner. But speed isn't really his strong suit... he's actually got a similar speed score to JW.

Where is the patience? At no point did he wait for his blocking. Please tell me which run showed patience.

Agility? Where? He rounded a few turns, but I didn't see anything in those "highlights" to showcase agility. Again, this is agility. I don't doubt Jones has agility. 88th percentile is very good. Those eight runs just didn't showcase it.

There's no "etc." here.

I would not listen to or argue with a person who ####s on a players 20+ yd runs while simultaneously pimping a back that has zero career 20+ yd runs. That is a person who can be filed away as an ignore, a non-realist and someone who is not good at fantasy football. Just one mans opinion.

I own both guys, so I don't have a dog in this fight (except hoping one or the other is the guy and we avoid the timeshare).  I think Jones has a good burst, but otherwise isn't great. Williams is ok, but has almost no big-play ability.  He's tough but nothing special.

Where is the good vision?
The first play. Unless it’s one that doesn’t count cause it’s preseason.

Where is the patience?
3rd run

Agility? Where?
3rd run as well

We’re not looking at the same tape or you’re not understanding what you’re seeing. I shouldn’t have to explain something like this IMO.

I also don’t know why highlights has quotes around it....

Never mind. Didn’t know he was a Williams guy and someone who locked on to a player.

I don’t own either at the moment and if I’m wrong on a guy it just is what it is, it won’t be the first time or the last. I don’t know these guys personally and don’t care that much.

I think he and Rodgers will do well together, but I also think that his return might help Jamaal Williams out as well. I'd use Williams as the goal line / red zone back now.

I'm a Jones faither. Own him in my dyno. When it comes to Jones, McCarthy's comments strike me as a HC that's dealing with talented immaturity. Of course he's the most talented RB on he roster. But in view of the suspension he likely sees the need to bait him with playing time.

Agreed, when you see analysis that one sided I just assume he has Williams on his roster. He only going to see what he wants to see. It may mean ignore him in this instance but it doesn’t mean he is no good at FF overall.

3rd run

3rd run as well

Obviously one of us doesn't know what we're looking at because in the first play he followed his blocker (89) as intended. That's just running the play. Not vision.

That third run is not a display of patience. Quite a stretch to say that it is. He wants to run inside but has absolutely nowhere to go so he runs the only place he can. Neither patience nor agility is shown there. Funny you say you saw all these positive things and can only name two plays out of eight with them and those two plays don't even show those traits.

I thought I made it clear that these were more highlights of good blocking or bad defense than of actual running plays. Thus, the quotes around "highlights."

The joke is on bojang because I actually roster both of these guys (and in some cases I even roster Ty). Some people are so thirsty for hope in here that they are willing to get hyped about anything, including highlights in which he does absolutely nothing special against a poorly defended six man box. I'm not trying to "**** on" Aaron Jones. Just calling a spade a spade. These "highlights" are not showing anything special, however I do think Jones has solid fantasy potential... in the right situation. Look at Duke Johnson. I think Jones is at least as good as Duke. The main difference is that Duke played on an 0-16 team last year getting a ton of targets in garbage time. Given his college scouting reports, I think Jones is a better receiver than Duke. Jones obviously hasn't had an opportunity to show it in the NFL, but I think the receiving skills are there.

Put Jones in an Ekeler, Duke, Chris Thompson role and he'll have fantasy value. I just don't expect any coaches to put him in a bell cow role, but that seems like what everyone in here is expecting despite no signs of it coming. He was third on the depth chart before injuries last season and he'll be third on the depth chart again this season.

As long as all 3 are healthy, this will be a 3 headed monster.  10 carries each for Williams and Jones.  3rd down duties for Montgomery.  When any of the 3 have been asked to carry the full load, they've each gotten hurt.  Green Bay will try to limit that risk by going full RBBC, playing to each of their strengths.  Book it.

You guys should all go back and count how many posts you've made making the exact same point.  It's stunning, really.
