RB Alexander Mattison, MIA (2 Viewers)

Vikings beat writer Alec Lewis said the team is “very committed to Alexander Mattison being the guy” this season.
This isn’t all that surprising, given how thin the running back room appears to be behind Mattison. While Ty Chandler figures to spell Mattison on game days, rookie DeWayne McBride and return man Kene Nwangwu won’t be threatening Mattison for touches any time soon. The Vikings meeting with Kareem Hunt earlier this offseason created some cause for concern, but little has come from those rumors since then. Mattison’s expected volume should lock him in as a high-end RB2 in PPR leagues this season.

His career average of 4.1 YPC scares the **** out of me. That's REALLY BAD for an NFL starter. I've seen RBs get signed off the street in Week 12 and put up higher than 4.1 YPC.

The last two seasons he averaged less than 4 yards a carry (3.8 and 3.7).

The only reason this guy has a starting job is because Dalvin Cook didn't want to take a paycut.

Honestly, my big takeaway is that the Vikings plan on passing a ton this season, because you aren't putting teams away in the 4th quarter with a RB that averages under 4 ypc.

No way he is a starter next year. No way he keeps a stranglehold on the starting job if he averages 4.0 ypc or less. He's a total stopgap. I paired him with a 2nd Round pick to get Terry McLaurin in my dynasty.

Get whatever value you can now, because it won't be there this time next year. For reference, he had the same exact ypc as Ezekiel Elliot last year and that guy was running in quicksand. I would guess he goes for 875 yards and maybe gets lucky and scores 8 touchdowns.

In redraft you're probably stuck with him, but in dynasty I think you trade him and then acquire DeWayne McBride at a fraction of the price.

I watched McBride for about 20 minutes. Im a Vikings fan, of course I was interested in him.

I didnt bother watching him any more than this because to my eyes he is too slow. I dont know why the Vikings drafted him. No other traits that I look for in a RB stood out either. I was pretty thouroughly unimpressed. If I had to pick one trait that I think is his best, I would say contact balance. But this didnt seem above average compared to any other RB Ive watched over the years either.

To be honest I dont like what the Vikings have done with the position under the new GM and coach.

Vikings sign Myles Gaskin
Wonder if Flores put in a good word for him?

This is the exact addition you want to see if you drafted Mattison. Someone competent, but not a threat at all.

I'd imagine Gaskin is the RB3 and could push Chandler for the #2 spot. If Mattison goes down, I'd expect a RBBC between them, but neither is a threat to Mattison.

I am seeing/reading alot of rumblings on Mattison not being the clear lead back on the team. Any Twin Cities fans in here have any insight?

he has waited 4 years for this opportunity so i find it hard to believe that he wont be their workhorse.

Got any links to these rumblings? It's not like they have much on the bench.

Those are not rumblings from the team - they're two opinion pieces (one is actually a story reporting on some one else's "bold" prediction) from some random cheap looking website.
The team has made it crystal clear who the lead back will be.

I am a Vikings fan.

Seems pretty clear Mattison is the starter and should get the majority of the opportunity.

That doesnt mean the Vikings wont mix Chandler in at times just like they mixed in Mattison when they had Dalvin Cook.

Remains to he seen how well he does with the opportunity. He is not as good as Dalvin Cook.

Depending on how well Mattison and/or Chandler perform will shape opportunity in the future. For now Mattison is the starter and Chandler is the back up.

If neither or one of them performs well then Gaskin will get a look. Gaskin hasnt been with the team long enough to expect any play time for him in the early weeks.

Nwangu could be in the mix as well but this seems unlikely.

I would describe this as Mattison being the clear starter for now. But if he does not do well then it becomes running back by competition.

Vikings sign Myles Gaskin
Vikings cut him today with the intent to sign him to their practice squad.
Interesting. Can’t imagine they are happy rolling with just Mattison and Chandler but time will tell.

The rumor mill will be out on Kareem Hunt who visited already.
I read somewhere that they were putting Gaskin on the practice squad and then elevating him right before game time so his salary isn’t guaranteed.

I read that as well in a Reddit comment.

Likely to cut out some guaranteed vet minimum salary owed to a guy on the roster.

Yet another RB getting lowball money.

I just traded AM for a 2024 1st
This seems like a good return for Mattison right now as I dont see him being the Vikings starter long term. Either because of the draft or free agency this or next season he may be challenged for that role. Or possibly from what they already have on the roster, although this seems less likely to me than by a player yet to be named.

That said the Vikings are showing us that they do not prioritize the RB position in their roster construction. So it is possible that Mattison plays well enough to hang on to the starting role for the Vikings all season, and if he does maybe keeps that role in the 2024 season as well because the Vikings have a lot of needs at other positions than RB. Especially all across their defense. But they might be looking for a rookie QB from the draft if they can get in position to get one and offensive linemen as well is an area that can still be improved. The way they like to throw the ball they might be looking for another WR also in Osborn moves on. I believe he is a free agent after this season?

The Vikings might be fine with a RBBC if Mattison isnt good enough to keep the starting role for himself.

All of that is to say I like the trade for you but it could work out for your trade partner as well if Mattison puts up decent numbers this season, which if he does gives Mattison a good shot to keep that role in the 2024 season as well.

I recall trading a 1st round pick for Chester Taylor when he signed with the Vikings. He is a player I had liked for a long time as a Raven before me and my trade partner made the deal.

At the time I was very flush on 1st and 2nd round picks from some other deals I had made prior to this. I was loading up on picks in preperation for when Adrian Peterson would enter the league at this time, and also as just a general philosophy that having picks was good. They were great trade capital and a way for me to expand the overall value of my roster. My team was very good and a perenial contender for titles at the same time. I was able to make a lot of trades because I had a lot of players people wanted, especially at the WR position where my team was loaded.

I was totally fine with paying that 1st round pick (ended up being pick 11 I think) for the one year of starting options I got out of Taylor before the Vikings drafted Peterson, who I also drafted with the 1st overall pick I had from previous deal. I didnt even have to trade up to get Peterson although I had the draft capital and roster to be able to do that if I had needed to.

Taylor became an expensive back up for me after that, but I had no regrets about what I paid for him at all.

With all of that said, I dont think Mattison is as good as Chester Taylor was, but just saying it could work out fine for the buyer as well.

Alexander Mattison rushed 11 times for 34 yards in the Vikings’ Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers, adding three receptions for 10 additional yards.

As the Vikings’ new starting running back, Mattison got 14 total touches in Week 1. As a runner, he only averaged 3.1 yards per carry, but dominated the backfield split, getting 11 out of 14 running back carries for the team. He also added a receiving touchdown, catching the pass in motion and breaking a tackle on his way to the end zone. Expect lower volume rushing from the Vikings, but Mattison is in borderline-RB2 consideration facing the Eagles in Week 2.

Not a total dud for fantasy, but a weak statistical performance nontheless.

How this guy sticks as the starter is beyond me. He's just not really very good, IMO.

After one week my opinion has not changed. This dude is just an ordinary RB. He just plays on a good offense so he has value. Imagine him on the Texans? Yuck

Playing Pacheco and Pittman over him. Can’t see success against eagles d line plus his center is out. He‘ll spend more time blocking tonight than anything else.

People are benching a 4th-5th Rd RB in most Redrafts
RB17 projected this week

I'm a little surprised people are pushing him to the bench, why did you draft him to begin with?
If he was part of a RB2 Platoon and you don't like TNF and Philly with OL issues, yeah I can understand that

If he bombs out tonight, needle is going to point towards an early season bust candidate

Why play Pacheco over him. Andy Reid will give him his normal 6 or 7 carries then for some strange reason he will give McKinnon & the slug CEH carries, it's baffling. The latter 2 suck. I have Pacheco in dynasty and will never put him in my lineup.

You talked me into it 🤣
