RB Ameer Abdullah, LV (3 Viewers)

Edelman was listed as the #1 KR/PR on NE's depth chart heading into last night. Guess how many returns he had?

I'm amazed by how many quality posters on this board take these depth charts at face value.
The depth chart has nothing to do with it. He isn't listed as the return guy there.

More hype..

ESPN Lions reporter Michael Rothstein expects rookie RB Ameer Abdullah to have a heavy workload in Week 1.

Lions OC Joe Lombardi has also said he plans to use Abdullah in an extensive role. Joique Bell will start against San Diego, but it wouldn't be surprising if Abdullah out-touches him. Abdullah is a high-upside RB3.
Here's a link to Rothstein's article.
I'll believe it when I see it. I don't trust them using him on both KO and punt returns if they have big plans. Unless, that is part of the "big plans." It's pretty unusual for a RB to be involved heavily in the offense if they are the sole return guy.
Bump Abdullah.

Already sat him for Deangelo. Its nice to have the luxury of watching and waiting but I'd feel confident if he was in my lineup.

Starting him over Crowell & R. Randle (Cruz out.)

A lot of the last couple pages is echo chamber hype stuff (Lonbardi made one comment, half dozen reports), and absolutely nothing except speculation regarding a reduced role for Joique. But I figure his floor is 10 touches plus a couple kickoff returns. Should be plenty to see what he's got.

I'm going back and forth trying to decide between Abdullah and R. Matthews. They are both lottery tickets to me, I guess? I've changed my mind a bunch of times already. One of the pluses for me was the returns because we get return yards but now saying he won't do very many returns.

While Mathews has an easier match up I would give the edge to Abdullah. He should only really be competing with Bell for carries and I would think Bell still needs to be eased in after only recently practicing with the team. Also, Mathews has to compete for touches with both Demarco and Sproles.

Assume both RBs stay healthy in both systems: Murray/Mathews, Bell/AA.

I think AA with any given stellar game can overtake Bell. Murray will be starting in Philly as long as he is healthy.

From MLive (Kyle Meinke):

Q: How many snaps/usage will Ameer Abdullah get this Sunday? -- Chuck

A: I still believe Joique Bell is this team's starting tailback, and probably its primary tailback. But I also expect Ameer Abdullah to get a ton of action as well, both out of the backfield and as a pass-catcher. He is the Lions' best big-play threat out of the backfield, and will be used accordingly.

Joe Lombardi said this on Thursday about Abdullah's usage: "He's going to get a chance to run the ball, and he's also going to get used extensively in the pass game. Like a lot of running backs, he's a well-rounded player which makes it easy (to keep him out there). People call them 'three-down backs' and he's certainly a guy that can do it all."

I have no idea what that means. Or maybe it means nothing, which would be a great troll on his part. But "extensively" is a strong word, you know?

Q: Under what circumstances do you see Zach Zenner taking carries in regular season? -- Derek Paige

A: The season is a long one, so as long as he doesn't fall on his face, he'll be needed on the active roster at some point. Even George Winn, last year's fourth tailback, earned 19 carries. And Zenner appears to be much further along as a rusher than Winn ever was.

The more interesting question is, does Zenner get any carries against San Diego?

He'll have to be active first, of course, and that's no certainty. The Lions can dress only 46 of their 53 players, and Zenner is a candidate to be one of the seven who are down.

He's stacked behind Joique Bell, Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick at the position, so his best case for getting on the field -- or in a jersey at all -- will be on special teams. He worked on the kick and punt return units during the preseason, and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi seemed to see a lot of progress out of him.

But if he does earn a spot on the active roster, I wouldn't be surprised to see Detroit get his feet wet with a carry or two. But not much more than that. Bell and Abdullah are the better rushers, and the ball needs to be in their hands.

Fun side note: Zenner's 24th birthday is the day of the opener. Nothing like getting yourself a $25,588.24 game check as a present, aye?

I think it's definitely Abdullah. I don't see Mathews having big weekly value without a Murray injury, though it remains to be seen how Philly will use him. I have him on a few teams and am not starting him anywhere. On the other hand, I'm rolling with Ameer everywhere that I can.

Tempted to use Abdullah as starting RB over Latavius Murray, Crowell, and Sproles in PPR. Decision boils down to Abdulla or Murray.

Kid's so good that it's bittersweet for me. I have him in quite a few places, but it could be even more.

Definitely doubled down in daily FF and redraft though, which is nice. He's looking to be a huge steal. Dynamite every time he touches the rock.

2 KR - 82 yards

3 KR - 105 yards

if you're into that sort of thing

11 touches 167 yards

7 rushes 50 yards TD

4 targets 4 receptions 44 yards

14 touches 199 all purpose yards

this guy is a threat to go all the way every ####### time
I was just thinking, I wish he had the speed to take it all the way more often. He's great getting into space. Not so great pulling away.
Well, that's basically been the book on him. Nobody is quicker or more explosive over the first five yards, but his top speed is not good at all. He doesn't build speed at all and runs like he's in a wind tunnel once he hits his full stride. That's pretty much what kept him out of the first round of the NFL draft. His first step is so deadly though that he's really good at creating space for himself, and it seems like that's all he really needs.

I'm happy with the debut. Detroit's offense seems like they have some stuff to figure out, but Ameer consistently delivered explosive plays today when given opportunities. When the coaches look at that, you have to think that his workload in future weeks should only rise.

With this loss, I have to believe we will see his touches rise...
I honestly don't think they'll increase all that much, especially if he continues to return kicks. The talent is undeniable but I hate that he'll likely be streaky this year.
I think the Lions would like to ideally have a Thunder (Joique or Zenner) compliment to Abdullah's lightning, but if Joique keeps plodding and if they don't trust Zenner yet then the coaching staff might not have a choice but to give lead back duties to Abdullah.

According to rotoworld Ben Tate is working out Tuesday.

That report was from Monday, June 8.

So close.
