RB Bijan Robinson, ATL (2 Viewers)

Well that was a wasted pick in Summerpalooza. Wanted to watch the rookie run. I assumed his coach would let him. No such luck. He looks pretty good, too. I mean, he's not the world beater we thought he'd be because I'm not sure anybody could live up to his hype he was getting on these boards, but he's been excellent. He corners well. Like a sports car.

But Allgeier's 3.2 ypc are so much tougher! That's all that matters.
The Vikings defense stuffed the run for almost the entire game.

On the Falcons last scoring drive it was all runs though follow a Heinickie interception. One scramble by the QB on 3rd down to extend the drive. Robinson did get that drive started, but Allgeier finished it with several good runs. His YPC was much worse than that prior to that drive. I can't fault the coach for letting Allgeier do that. It almost won them the game.

Robinson did fumble the ball which ended a drive prior to the interception and was pivotal in enabling the Vikings to come back and score. He had a good run when he fumbled as well. If he just takes care of the ball they likely would have called his number more towards the end of the game than they did.

Ruined my season, lost 3 games in a row with this bum as my RB1
Like others mentioned, can't sit him and he's not worth much in Redraft

1st Rd BUST!!! Add him to the the list
That’s the risk you take drafting a rookie so high. Usage and performance are total unknowns.
Usage shouldn’t be an unknown when an RB is drafted 8th overall. That kind of pick implies heavy usage. Assuming heavy usage, performance can be inferred. If Bijan were used as expected, he’d likely be fantastic for both the Falcons and our teams.

The Falcons and Arthur Smith essentially blew their 1st round pick on a generational talent they had no intention of using. Simple as that. Makes no sense, but that’s what is happening. They could use him more but choose not to for reasons unknown.

The Falcons spent top 10 picks on skill players the previous 2 years and didn't really feature them heavily either.

Which is why someone should be fired

I think even the brain dead offensive geniuses in New England and Chicago could figure out how to use these three studs efficiently I’m thinking

I really think he’s gonna get some run now, that was a horrorific loss and Arthur can’t exactly act like he’s got some master plan now

he should really be fired losing to Josh Dobbs off the street essentially in his own building
I’m not so sure.

I think the incompetence of Arthur knows no bounds. I don’t really expect things to get truly better for Bijan until he’s gone.

To me that’s a directive he should get above his pay grade

Its not like Smith didnt warn us with the baffling lack of use for Pitts....I just figured Bijan was so good it would be a no brainer. Lesson learned - fantasy season sunk!

I am dumbfounded as to his usage….I have no rational explanation.
I live in western Canada so they dont televise Falcons games a whole lot up here. but the most likely scenario is they want him to get up to speed on blitz pickup and such.. This is usually what keeps talented rookie RB's off the field. Like I said, I have nothing to base this on but it feels like the most likely explanation at this point. for those of you watching, how is his pass pro? any reason why this would be the reason?

And the sad thing is, that division they are in is so mediocre, they will likely win enough games for Smith to keep his job, which means good luck next year as well. What a waste of a stud in the making.

I'm not ready to call Bijan a bust... but I'm OK with others saying it. :-)

I have to think that at some point Arthur Smith gets the, "You better f*****g hand the ball the Bijan or I will put a coach out there that will" speech and it will be on from there.

Wasn't there something funky like this with Adrian Peterson as a rookie too? He was so much better than any RB on the roster and didn't start until week 8 or something like that. Similar public outcry IIRC.

He sure seems like he's fully entrenched in proving he's right more than winning. I guess when you are a billionaire, who cares if you lose your job?

When your daddy is the founder of FedEx, you don’t have to take accountability for your screw-ups, and he sure as hell never has. The Falcons fans are taking notice as well (from what I see over on Reddit). He’s a stubborn ******* without the resume to back up his hubris, and it’s costing the Falcons some games. They very well may still back their way into a division title, but they have the talent on the field to be so much more than that.

Just a guess, but this may have been their plan all along. RBs have a limited shelf life. If Atlanta isn’t ready to compete in the playoffs yet, giving Bijan a lot of touches would be counterproductive in that sense, not to mention giving them a potentially lower draft pick slot. It wouldn’t be that off the wall if management wanted to save him some wear & tear this season.

Bijan did have 23 touches in week 2, though. Also, maybe the lack of touches these last 2 weeks is connected to whatever happened in week 7.

Yes, I'm sure there is... that's why I said "similar public outcry"

Bijan is RB24 in my ppr league, RB27 in half-ppr. He averages 11.4 rushes per game, 3.1 receptions.

Arthur Smith is unreal.

And despite the fact that he already must have more money than god, my working theory is he’s beyond greedy and cleaning up on prop bets against his own players.

This is how I see it. Now he might be stubborn to to his end but the heat has been finally started to get turned up on him with the focus on why he keeps using high drafts pick on players like Pitts and Bijan only to feature Jonnu and Allgeier. That and his "I'm smarter then you" attitude has finally started to rub people the wrong way and not just upset fantasy owners.

The flaw in the plan might be Bijan. Leading up to the "headache" game he told reporters he was feeling sore and when asked about Smith said they needed to be smart with how they used him. I have never really had any doubt that's why he was so quick to not use him that next game when Bijan said he had a headache. I heard some of Smith's comments again today and he again said something about needing to be smart with how they use Bijan and I did not take it as his normal "I'm the smartest guy in the room" stuff. It seems as if after just 7 weeks that Bijan has hit some kind of wall already.

So for me I'm thinking the uptick in Bijans usage is coming, but it might not be until week 12 after he's had his bye.

Ha - I lived in Athens 2012-2017 (and worked at UGA) and this is true, but most people do have the capability to root for both!

We can keep dreaming.

So what do we do with this guy this week?
I have good options.
I've been starting Bijan every week, along with Kenneth Walker and Etienne.
So for my RB3 I have a tough decision between
- Bijan @ Tennessee
- D Foreman @ Los Angeles Chargers
- D Swift @ Washington
- D Montgomery vs Las Vegas (if he plays, Monday night game; I'll watch the practice reports later this week).
Monty is likely OUT, he was set to miss a few weeks from when he was rules OUT
Foreman looks great but the other 2 RBs should be back in the mix soon there in Chicago
Swift is a good option
Bijan is going to be hard to trust for a little while IMHO
Yea, agree. I've already got Swift in my starting lineup for this upcoming week.

So Bijan owners are thinking of benching?

Not something I could do.
Not me. Disappointed and hoping Smith gets fired, but Bijan can break one at any time.

not sure how I didnt know that comment above yet about Smith. didn't think it was possible to like that guy less, but here we are.

Early career[edit]

Smith began his NFL coaching career in 2007, when he became the defensive quality control coach for the Washington Redskins. His father, FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith, was a minority owner of the team. Smith would stay at that position through 2008.

You're right that pass protection is one of the things that often holds rookies back from more playing time.

It's not just that though, it's also just the inexperience with the plays in general and timing. It takes awhile for these players to earn the coaches trust. That varies somewhat from coach to coach, but we saw that with Gibbs as well early on.

It's things like running the right route depth, timing with the offense, picking the right hole and perhaps most importantly not causing turnovers.

If a players timing is just a little off this can lead to interceptions or bad handoff exchanges. It just takes time to earn the coaches trust and build trust, chemistry and timing with the QB and other players on offense.

Looking at snap counts and opportunities Robinson has played 60% or more of the snaps in every game besides the game vs Tampa and he continues to get 4 or more targets per game after the game vs Tampa as well (only 2 vs Houston) he just hasn't caught a lot of them recently.

It's actually somewhat remarkable he has played 65% of the total offensive snaps thus far. Many rookies won't get that much in the 1st half of their first season.

Allgeier has played 37% of the snaps but he has a lot of opportunities for how little he has played. 57% of the snaps he's been in he is getting a target or rushing attempt. Robinson 35%

Patterson has only played 10% of the snaps and there is some overlap here between the 3 so some plays 2 of them on the field at the same time.

I don't know. I understand people are disappointed. He had a couple big games early on and you want more of that, but it's not happening.

I can't say the coach isn't playing Robinson enough though, they are playing him plenty.

There was. Chester Taylor officially started 8 games in 2007. It's was about a 40/60 split in opportunities between him and Peterson his rookie year.

Peterson had 384 touches in his 2nd season.

Looking back on it they used Peterson as a receiver more early on in his career than they did later on in his career.

We didn't know this at the time but Peterson was terrible is pass protection and he never really improved at that. Unlike most players.

So while people were upset about the split with Taylor in Petersons first season it makes sense to me now why that happened and I think Chester Taylor was a better RB than most people give him credit for.

Peterson still had 1609 total yards his rookie season.

Petersons weaknesses in pass protection still didn't stop the Vikings from phasing Taylor out and building their offense around Peterson in his 2nd season.

Peterson is on record saying he had to learn patience and how to press the hole longer as part of developing into a better player. I think things like this apply to all rookie RB.

This rings true to me and may be a big part of what is going on here.

Robinson did play 80% of the snaps week 3 vs Detroit then 76% week 4 vs Jacksonville then 77% week 6 vs Washington. All losses BTW where they may have had him in as a receiving option more.

He had 73% of the snaps week 8 vs the Titans. So that seems like plenty after the game off vs Tampa.

Smith may be trying to not burn Robinson up by overloading him too much rather than the other way around.

Not what people want to hear as they blame the coach I know but these are the facts.
