Eagles Friday injury update, RB Westbrook practices

Written by: BOB KENT ¦ 9/22/2006

Source: www.philadelphiaeagles.com

Running back Brian Westbrook was back on the practice field Friday and is expected to play in Sunday's game against the 49ers. "He felt pretty good coming off the field today," head coach Andy Reid said. "We've been a bit cautious with him."

Meanwhile, wide receiver Donte' Stallworth missed practice with a hamstring injury, but he's listed as probable for the game.

Westbrook missed two practices this week because of swelling in his knee. He also sat out two practices last week, but played in Philadelphia's overtime loss to the New York Giants. Westbrook rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown, and caught seven passes for 56 yards. He also had a critical fumble in the fourth quarter.

Stallworth has emerged as Donovan McNabb's primary target since arriving in a trade with New Orleans last month. He has 11 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Cornerback Lito Sheppard will miss his second straight game with a sprained ankle, while backup cornerback Rod Hood remained doubtful with a heel strain.

The Eagles already lost star defensive end Jevon Kearse to a season-ending knee injury sustained in overtime against the Giants.

:lmao:

Anyone else still worried?
For my RB2. I had a choice of Westbrook and McGahee...I took McGahee, not because I thought he was better (I don't!!!), but Westbrook was already tweaked in preseason!!! That was your warning Westbrook owners...He'll be on/off all year. He does produce well playing hurt though!!!

Stallworth and Hamstring. Not good when both of those words are in the same sentence....keep an eye on this, Stallworth owners.

That's the Donte I know. That will get worse a the season wears on. That has been his MO his whole career. I love the start he has had, but this is what has dogged him. He can't shake that soft tissue/hammy inury. He is the poster child for injury prone. Hopefully he shakes it but if not Reggie Brown will get his chances to shine as well.

donte played every game for the last 2 years (32 games). in 2003 he played only 11 and 14 his rookie year. that's 88% of his possible starts. calling him "injury prone" is overstating it a bit, i think. he's been nicked up over the offseason, which is why he never proved his worth to payton. this hammy issue isn't surprising because he's been dealing with it since training camp.

Donte often plays through his hammy issues, but they have limited his production everytime they come up. Without that top end speed he's not much of a threat.Still, I heard this injury was just cramping, so nothing to worry about yet.I am shocked that Westbrook practiced if he's "bone-on-bone". Nice work Fantasy Show and Mr. Carroll.

It has been on an ESPN fantasy show on ESPN2.I heard this on ESPN 2 Fantasy Football Show with Ron Joworski, et al, or whatever they call the show. This was the same show that reported Caddy with mulitple herniated disks. Take it for what it's worth.

Ahhh yeah I second this. First I have also heard of this EVER.

I was making fun of the ESPN2 Fantasy Show that claimed with no source that westbrook has no cartilage in his knee and is "bone on bone".

Then Westy comes out and practices the next day, almost as an "F you" to ESPN.

As far as I know the bone-on-bone rumor is COMPLETELY unsubstantiated.

Westbrook passes his practice examAfter resting his inflamed knee, he worked out with the team before the trip to San Francisco and said he's ready to play.

By Marc Narducci

Inquirer Staff Writer

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook ran easily with the ball yesterday, caught passes out of the backfield, and alleviated countless fears about his availability for tomorrow's game against the 49ers at San Francisco's Monster Park.

After missing two days of practice with inflammation in his right knee, Westbrook took part in yesterday's light workout at the NovaCare Complex. He didn't appear to be holding back while carrying the ball or running pass routes.

And even though the Eagles list him as questionable for the game, Westbrook expects to be on the field.

"I feel very confident I will be able to go out there and contribute and help this team win a football game," he said after the workout. "That is what I've been doing all week - trying to get healthy to where I don't have to worry about the swelling any longer."

Westbrook's condition has caused more than a little concern. Last week, he left practice early on Thursday with knee inflammation and didn't work out the rest of the week.

Westbrook played Sunday, and other than one ill-timed fumble, performed well with 124 all-purpose yards.

"It wasn't too bad in the game," Westbrook said. "After the game, just because of the pounding and cutting, it swelled up a little bit."

So he didn't practice until yesterday, but showed enough to impress coach Andy Reid.

"He felt pretty good coming off the field today, so I think he is going to be OK," Reid said. "We've been cautious with him to make sure we get that swelling out of there."

One reason Westbrook still is listed as questionable is that neither he nor the Eagles know how the knee will respond to the cross-country flight. The Eagles were scheduled to depart for the West Coast at 5 p.m. yesterday.

"It's one of those things with the long trip, any time you have an injury, it tends to swell on the airplane," Westbrook said. "So I have to find a way to keep the swelling down, ice it on the trip."

He also realized that he literally couldn't sit still the entire flight.

"I have to move around on the plane a little," he said. "Hopefully, the swelling is gone for good."

Westbrook has rushed for 139 yards (3.9 average) and a touchdown. He has caught 11 passes for 117 yards and another TD. And in the first game of the season, he returned three punts for an 8.3-yard average.

"He is a major weapon, and teams have to account for him on the field," said Eagles tight end L.J. Smith, who has caught 13 passes for 167 yards. "When he is there, he gives us a better chance to win the game."

Westbrook said he isn't concerned that it's only the third week of the season and already the second time he has experienced swelling in his knee.

"It doesn't worry me at all," he said.

Apparently it also doesn't worry the coach.

"The swelling is down now, so he feels comfortable and he is doing double time on the mental reps so he makes sure he knows everything we have in," Reid said.

Westbrook said they haven't discussed whether he will miss practices on a weekly basis to rest the knee.

"Hopefully, my knee won't swell at all and I won't have to worry about that," he said.

Now his only concern is the 49ers (1-1).

Westbrook's appearance at practice seemed to boost the spirits of his teammates, not to mention those of Reid and the coaching staff.

"We knew he at least had a chance, and if he has a chance, in the back of our minds he is good," Smith said. "So for him to come out and practice today is a good sign."

Even with this news I'm strongly considering starting the "The Buck". The Eagles should have a good lead against San Fran and I could see Buck getting maybe 10-15 carries and a goal line TD... in other words the combination of Westy's lingering injury and (the potential) big lead should convince Reid to rest Westy in the latter part of the game.

Beware teams traveling cross-country, especially when they are missing lots of players on their defense.

Sitting for long periods (knee staying bent for hours) of time can be very straining on a swollen knee. Hard to move the knee around when you sitting on a plane.

Speaking from someone who has a jacked up knee :)

I have a feeling that their plane rides are a little different from what you and I experience.

what about stallworth folks?
Stallworth is probable, we use these pinned Sunday updates for guys questionable or worse. There isn't a need for updates on guys that are probable. If someone is a last minute downgrade, we would get that info out. Stallworth is playing.Eagles coach Andy Reid said it was nothing to be alarmed about, but nevertheless he held wide receiver Donté Stallworth out of yesterday's practice at the NovaCare Complex with a hamstring injury. Stallworth is listed as probable for tomorrow's game at Monster Park against the San Francisco 49ers. LINK

IMO, he'll be fine. He practiced Friday and he'll be good to go for today. This is the same thing that happened last week and he had a real good game. You gotta start him...unless of course, your alternative is a bonafide stud.

This thread on this board is the best place to receive the latest word, and you don't need to pay for that. I sat Westy last week with a questionable knee. He was just fine in the game. I won't make that mistake again this week.
