RB Carlos Hyde, JAC (1 Viewer)

Very smart move by Hyde to sign before free agency opened. More players who are cut, should try really hard to sign as early as possible.

Chiefs RB Carlos Hyde has occasionally lined up with Damien Williams on the field at minicamp.

Not only has he shared the field with Williams at times, Hyde's also been heavily involved as a receiver out of the backfield. "I didn't know they used the running back so much in the passing game until I got here," Hyde emphasized. "It put a smile on my face." Given Andy Reid's historical preference to utilize one back, it's still likely Hyde remains an afterthought unless Williams goes down mid-season.

Matt Derrick @mattderrick

Carlos Hyde starts install period as running back with ones with Damien Williams on the sidelines.

Nick Roesch @Nicolas_Roesch

Carlos Hyde has been very involved in screens/dump offs. Chiefs seeing what he can bring to the receiving game.

FBG email had Reid quoted as praising Hyde’s ability, being frustrated with Williams injury.

its not like Hyde is a scrub - he’s looking like an upside cheap stash for those drafting early. I’m certainly gonna try to get him for $1-2 in my auction this week.

Better grab Darwin too.

He's a better pick than Hyde in my opinion. I can't recall a RB who has been as awful as Hyde has been the last 2 years, who is on his 4th team in that stretch, suddenly getting his act together. I mean CJ Anderson bounced around, but he was always playing well, Hyde not so much.

Thompson was among the most elusive RB's in CFB last year. Compared by scouts to both Dion Lewis and Austin Ekeler. Feels like a better fit for Reid's offense.

Recently acquired him in both my dynasties. This time last year Damien Williams was a depth guy.

Carlos Hyde fits the mood of any veteran running back who can come in and do everything right.

Not great but very good. In that offense, all you have to be is good. Thats how Williams got the job in the first place.

I am guessing that Andy Reid trusts Carlos Hyde’s skills in pass protection as he won’t want to take any unnecessary risks with Mahomes.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Carlos Hyde for "taking advantage" of Damien Williams' absence.

"Carlos has done a nice job," said Reid. "He's getting a lot of reps and he's taking advantage of them." Williams' hamstring injury has kept him out longer than expected, allowing Hyde to work with the starters at Chiefs camp. There's reason to doubt Williams, a career backup beginning his first stint as an NFL workhorse, but that doesn't necessarily mean fantasy owners should be pivoting to Hyde, who managed a meager 3.3 yards per carry in 14 games between Cleveland and Jacksonville last season. With that said, Hyde could have some handcuff/vulture appeal playing for what should be one of the league's highest-scoring offenses.

He shouldn't. Hyde is the worst pass blocking RB in the NFL over the last 2 seasons. I'd be shocked if he was better than Thompson or Darrel Williams at it.

I mean, I pretty much look at him as Ron Dayne at this point.

I gave up on this dude awhile ago but KC is one of the best offenses in the league. Anything can happen:

@travdogg — good call. I assumed as a veteran RB with good size that Hyde would be reliable in his pass protection skills. I assumed incorrectly:

How Pro Football Focus sees 49ers free agent Carlos Hyde(Feb 19, 2018, 8:50am PST)

Excerpt:

Hyde has an overall grade of 50.3 from them, and that has a lot to do with pressures allowed (with the state of overall blocking and quarterback awareness for the 49ers in 2017, I’m willing to give him a pass here) and drops in the passing game (which I’m less willing to forgive).
Excerpt:

Coming off his worst-graded season due to shoddy work in the pass game, both as a receiver and as a blocker, Hyde is a one-dimensional back who has always graded above average as a runner. No running back gave up more than Hyde’s 13 pressures in pass protection, and he also finished with the worst drop rate in the league at 13.2 percent. As a runner, Hyde has had a productive four-year career, but he needs to be managed in the pass game in a platoon situation.

Darrel Williams' pass blocking was one of his strong suits coming out of college, right? Probably not the athletic ability of Thompson but a full year in the system. What is Reid's track record with playing rookie RB's? Definitely an interesting battle to keep an eye on.

DT has been an auto draft in the 3rd round or later in all my Dynasty rookie drafts. That offense offers too much upside and there are no proven bellcows in his way. That is the recipe to get a shot. If Darwin gets a chance, and flashes, his value will go thru the roof. Plus, Waldman compared Darwin to Brian Westbrook. I’ll take a shot at that kind of production all day in the 3rd or late in redraft.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor left Carlos Hyde off his latest 53-man roster projection for the Chiefs.

Taylor's prediction is surely based on more than this, but his explanation in the article is mostly related to Hyde's quiet preseason opener. "Hyde can find his way back on the roster with a good performance against the Steelers," Taylor added. That's not usually how it works for a veteran like Hyde. His spot figures to be won or lost in practice. We would still guess Hyde makes it, though all signs in recent days have pointed toward Damien Williams maintaining a stranglehold on No. 1 duties.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor again left Carlos Hyde off his 53-man roster projection Tuesday.

Hyde has been dreadful this preseason, forcing zero missed tackles despite his 6'/229 frame. He's rushed seven times for 25 yards (3.6 YPC) and one touchdown to go along with a fumble this past weekend against the Steelers. The Chiefs' starters played two series, and Damien Williams handled the first set with Hyde in on the second. Hyde was talked up by coach Andy Reid early in camp, but it's been quiet ever since as rookie Darwin Thompson has ran circles around him. Working against Hyde is he doesn't play special teams. Taylor has the Chiefs keeping Damien and Darrel Williams, Thompson, and converted-CB Tremon Smith in the backfield. The entire appeal with Hyde in fantasy was him donning a Chiefs uniform. If he's cut, he obviously has no value.

The Kansas City Star's Brooke Pryor reports rookie Darwin Thompson has leaped Carlos Hyde on the depth chart and has been getting goal-line work with the first-team offense.

Pryor is the latest Chiefs beat writer to leave Hyde off her 53-man roster projection, keeping Thompson along with Damien and Darrel Williams. Thompson has been so good this preseason, and Hyde has been as bad as Thompson has been good. All Hyde has going for him is his veteran presence; he doesn't play special teams, either. Thompson is picking up big-time steam as a late-round fantasy pick. It's going to be tough to keep him off the field.

Adam Teicher @adamteicher

The Chiefs have used Damien Williams, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson at RB on their first two drives but not Carlos Hyde. If you were wondering about Hyde’s chances to make the roster, this is a clue.

Carlos Hyde rushed once for one yard in Saturday's preseason game against the 49ers.

Hyde was the fourth Chiefs running back to touch the ball after Damien Williams, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson. His lone carry came late in the third quarter with No. 3 QB Kyle Shurmur at the controls. Coach Andy Reid has all but announced that Hyde will be released at final cuts. He is off the board in fantasy drafts.

Its probably the latter. Houston should aim higher. Maybe Peterson, now that Guice looks healthy? Or Kenneth Dixon if he's behind Edwards and Hill?
Kenneth Dixon is exactly who I thought about. Dude is plenty talented, he just needs to stay on the field.

Carlos Hyde worked exclusively with the backups at Chiefs camp Monday.

As was the case on Sunday. Damien Williams, Darwin Thompson, and Darrell Williams have all consistently received reps ahead of Hyde since the team's third preseason game, undoubtedly spelling the end of the veteran's tenure in red and white once final cuts occur Saturday. Hyde's next suitor will be his fifth team in the last two seasons. It wouldn't be shocking to see him land as Lamar Miller's replacement in Houston by this time next week.

It wouldn't be shocking to see him averaging 2.4 ypc as Lamar Miller's replacement by this time the week after next and riding the bench as the team turns the job over to Duke Johnson.  Stick a fork in Hyde already.

Texans acquired RB Carlos Hyde from the Chiefs in exchange for OG Martinas Rankin.

Both teams were going to cut these respective players. Hyde quickly wore out his welcome in Kansas City with a lackluster preseason and now joins his fifth team in the last two years. He obviously has little to nothing left in the tank, but teams are going to keep trying with the soon-to-be 29-year-old. For Hyde, this is a good landing spot where he'll slide into former Browns teammate Duke Johnson. Johnson should run circles around Hyde, but coaches have never seemed willing to give Johnson a crack at lead-back duties. But if given a legit chance to be the top dog, we'd expect Johnson to come out on top. Hyde is still someone to take a flier on in fantasy.

Hyde didn't run the same last year and it wasn't that surprising he wasn't good in KC. I hope he runs with a purpose or chip on his shoulder in Houston, but I think he's done

"...where he'll slide into former Browns teammate Duke Johnson."
I was just coming (no double entendre intended) to post the same thing. Maybe it's the "editor" in me (or more likely the adolescent version of me I'll never shake), but that line jumped out at me, too.

Anyway...I'm not particularly worried, as a Duke owner.

You know what? I don't consider myself juvenile nor particularly gutter-minded, and that line got my attention, too.
