I think Fields opens up the RPO playbook dramatically, and if it works, that could be exceptionally good for Monty. They tried to do RPO stuff with Trubisky and it just didn't fit. I'm not sold on Nagy being a good playcaller, though, and I really, really wanna see Damien Williams render Cohen obsolete or even a cut. It isn't going to happen but I think Monty and Damien would make a really good 1-2 punch. Bring in the rookie Herbert as the once-in-awhile 3. 

The late season schedule may have been soft but Monty looked like he took a step forward in his development to me. I'm not expecting a lot, though, because their OL is still junk, it's still the Bears and they'll probably play Dalton for way too long. In fact I just sold one of my only Montgomery shares in one SF league. But I do like him and think he can return value this year, the sooner Fields gets on the field the better.

He was terrible against the Bucs and Colts (as almost everyone was) and mediocre against the Rams but he salvaged those games with solid receiving numbers.  And that's the part that concerns me: I don't think we can count on anything close to the same receiving volume with Cohen back and Williams (also a good receiving back) in the picture. Montgomery actually ran the second most routes of any RB in the NFL (second only to McKissic) and it's very difficult to see that repeating.  Granted, Montgomery has some juicy matchups again this season, but he seems like more of a floor play than a ceiling play.

Montgomery has been targeted in the passing game, and more than just dumpoffs, since his first game as a rookie. And his receiving skills were a positive on his scouting report when he was drafted. He has been and will continue to be involved in the passing game in more than just dumpoff situations. But I don't disagree with the general premise that Cohen and Williams are specialists in this area (Williams is all purpose though) and will get their own targets. Again I'm hoping they ditch Cohen because I think he is terrible but if he is there he will definitely get in the way a bit. 

TLDR Monty won't get the kind of targets he got last year but he will still get his share

Yeah I have seen a lot of RPO from the Bears offense and Fields might take that to a higher level than Trubisky could I agree.

The running threat from Fields should open up some nice gaps and help whoever is the RB get larger gains running the ball because of that.

For fantasy purposes that bonus does not make up for the likely loss in targets to RB that comes along with it though.

I do like Montgomery and I might be interested in him at that price even though I dont think he catches as many balls this season.

I think he is the worst RB in the NFC North but that he is still pretty good.

 
The Athletic's Adam Jahns said the Bears expect David Montgomery to surpass his 2020 rushing numbers. 

Montgomery had the fourth most carries (247) and the fifth most rushing yardage (1,070) in 2020 as Chicago's workhorse back. After a season-ending injury to Tarik Cohen, Montgomery took over pass-catching duties, finishing sixth in running back receptions (54). He's since worked with a speed coach to improve his breakaway ability, Jahns reports. Cohen's return and the Bears offseason signing of Damien Williams makes that sort of usage unlikely to repeat in 2021. Montgomery, who destroyed some of the NFL's worst rushing defenses in the final weeks of the 2020 season, is likely being drafted near his fantasy ceiling, as he's unlikely to retain that (extremely valuable) passing down work in 2021.

"Depending on what the game is, what's happened the last couple years and why some of David's carries -- which aren't low -- haven't been quite as high is a lot of guys get it in to four-minute mode in the fourth quarter," Nagy said, via SI.com. "That's where they can get those extra four or five carries, which can bump them into the top five, you know, with 20 rushes a game. That's our goal."

need to temper expectations with DM. he played a marshmallow soft 2nd half of 2020 season against high school defenses. clearly his stats need to be taken with a grain of salt. Is Fields any better than Trubisky? doubtful. Peyton Manning struggled mightily in his rookie season.. Fields is not on the level of J. Herbert, he's NOT going to take the NFL by storm, he'll have typical rookie growing pains. good RBs don't come from bad teams and chicago is in the bottom 3rd of the NFL , maybe a 6 win team. What happens when the boo-birds come out by Halloween, when Fields has started 5-6 games and he's terrible? 

Monty isn't going anywhere. I wouldnt touch the guy this season. Nagy is a dope he'll find a way to screw things up worse than they already are. Never underestimate Nagy's ability to mess it up. it's his final season as HC of the Bears, he's going to coach in a way to try to save his job. So you're going to see total fecklessness this season. 

Monty isn't good enough to overcome adversity like this. tougher schedule, rookie QB and many 8-man fronts. I don't get a warm n fuzzy feeling about the Bears in 2021.

Personally I don't like DM under the Nagy regime, but if there is one positive it is that mobile quarterbacks have shown to enhance the running game considerably. Trubisky although mobile doesn't scare you in the same way Fields does when it comes to legs. Will that negate the other things you mentioned? Probably not but he could be surprisingly serviceable if the volume continues to be there.

EDIT: I don’t think many people saw what Herbert did last year coming. Fields very well could have a big impact on this offense.

As a Bear fan and I saw every game last year and I think Montgomery is the real deal.  I have to say the issue at the beginning part of the season was not him, Nagy or whoever was calling plays.  The issue was the O-line.  I think 50% of all the carries half way through the season last year Montgomery was hit in the back field before he got to the line of scrimmage.  He will go as far this year as the line will take him.  So if the line is better than last year Montgomery will be good.  If it is the same it will will be tough sledding.

Definitely a big factor. 

In 2020 his 1.9 yard's before contact (ie. how much space the OL created for him) was tied for the 9th lowest mark in the league. (For comparison, JT's was 3.1, tied for 4th highest.) If the OL does improve and moves up to even league average that's a couple hundred extra yards right there on last year's workload... not to mention how much easier it is to get to the second level for big plays when you don't have to beat a guy just to get to the line of scrimmage.

Great stat, and it will determine if DM is a fantasy stud this year or just a solid #2, imo

I think he will be a solid #2 back. Can't ask for much more from your#2 than a big workload with 10TD potential. Would gladly scoop him up in round 5 if he's there.

Bears placed Tarik Cohen (knee) on the PUP list.

Cohen is still recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in Week 3 of last season. Following previous reports that Cohen has been dealing with stiffness in his knee, this move doesn't come as a major surprise. Still, with Damien Williams now in Chicago and David Montgomery showing well as a receiver last year, we could see Cohen brought along slowly in his recovery. Cohen shouldn't be considered a lock to be active Week 1.

Montgomery is going into the season significantly underappreciated.

 
Bears coach Matt Nagy believes 20 weekly carries for David Montgomery is "very doable."

It's the second time in three weeks Nagy has made such a proclamation. Montgomery averaged 16 carries in 2020, but that number increased to 19 for his sensational stretch run. In theory, there is room to get to 20 in 2021, but Tarik Cohen is back from injury while the Bears finally have a legitimate backup in Damien Williams. Nagy has also made the admission that Nagy's workloads will be game-flow dependent. Fantasy managers predictably aren't buying that Montgomery will pick up where he left off against a tissue-soft schedule last year, but his ADP in the RB17-20 range is reasonable.

Yeah there were reports he was on the bench talking with his teammates right afterwards. Said he was up and talking to Fields about how to tuck the ball away after he had fumbled. My guess is he had a slight ankle tweak and they were just like hey we were only gonna give him one series anyway. I watched it and he limped off but it was a minor limp and didn't take long, he wasn't lying on the ground or anything. *shrugs*

 
For those who may not select a RB in the first two rounds, would you be comfortable with Montgomery as your # 1 RB in the 3rd?

I could definitely see that as a decent strategy.

However, I'd want 2 uber studs at WR to try and "make up ground" at the WR position I might theoretically lose at RB early.

My opinion might be a tad biased, as many leagues I play in are "start 3WRS/2 RBs and no flex". I generally try and beat the league at WR early, unless someone I'm all over at RB unexpectedly falls to me.

Feels like it's  a recipe for disaster...I'd rather go full zero RB and take a shot on Sermon a few rounds later.(as an example)

I have an auction keeper draft so its a little different - but I went with Montgomery as my 1A with Swift and Sanders as well....but was able to get Devante Adams and AJ Brown as WRs so while im not thrilled with Monty as my de facto #1 RB - I think it paid off

I would select him as a RB1 in the 3rd if I went WR-WR or TE-WR picking late,  but “comfortable“ isn’t exactly the word I would use.

it would be acceptable to me to have something like Montgomery/Carson or Montgomery/Dobbins if I built by team that way.

But there are red flags there built into his draft price that keep me from being truly “comfortable”. 

 
Cohen to the PUP to start the season.

I'm higher than consensus and not sure I'm high enough.  Naggy has talked up getting him 20 touches per game.  I think he's a low end RB1 going like an RB2.  

 
ESPN's Jeff Dickerson said David Montgomery will rush for 1,400 yards in 2021. 

Dickerson cited head coach Matt Nagy's pledge to give Montgomery 20 carries a game as justification for his prediction. "Montgomery is too good to ignore -- the Bears have to feed him," Dickerson said. "If the Bears once again become one-dimensional on offense, forget about it. There is too much at stake for that to happen." There's no way Montgomery -- who notched 16.3 carries a game in 2020 -- will see 20 totes a game, as only Dalvin Cook and Derrick Henry averaged more than 20 carries per game last year. The Bears would have to be a vastly improved team for Montgomery to challenge Cook and Henry as preeminent workhorses. Montgomery's upside lies in his pass-catching role, which is far from a sure thing headed into Week 1.

David Montgomery rushed 10 times for 34 yards, catching 2-of-4 backfield targets for 21 yards in Chicago's Week 3 loss to Cleveland.

The only real takeaway from a game Chicago 'earned' 47 total yards in is that Montgomery handled 100% of the team's backfield touches (including all four targets) over backup Damien Williams. Montgomery missed a handful of plays with a slight injury in Week 1 but, since then, has also quietly handled 35-of-39 backfield touches for Chicago. He'll again be a touch-based RB2 in what should be a much better performance opposite Detroit's defense in Week 4.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Montgomery will undergo an MRI on Monday. After early testing, he is believed to have suffered a hyperextended knee.

The report explains why an hour after the game Montgomery was tweeting: "You are an awesome God!!!"

The fact the injury wasn't considered serious was helpful because his backup, Damien Williams, suffered a quad injury late in the fourth quarter and third running back Khalil Herbert finished.

 
Please don't be a serious injury, mainly for Montgomery's sake, but selfishly my RB depth is already in shambles.

Really happy for Montgomery. Have no shares but hate to see an injury, even if I drafted Herbert in both dynasties. That said ....

With the Williams injury does Herbert become a viable spot starter for the next few weeks? 

 
ESPN's Dan Graziano reports David Montgomery (knee) will miss 4-5 weeks. 

Montgomery, who reportedly avoided a major, season-ending injury, will miss Chicago's games against the Raiders, Packers, Bucs, and 49ers. He could return for Week 9 against Pittsburgh, though the team might rest him through their Week 10 bye and save him for Week 11 against Baltimore. Damien Williams will likely serve as the team's primary back over the next month; his pass-catching prowess could translate to a three-down role. Khalil Herbert will be sprinkled in and should be rostered in deeper formats in case Williams gets dinged up. Williams should be a solid FLEX, at worst, with Montgomery sidelined.
