RB Derrick Henry, BAL (4 Viewers)

This Raven D is all time bad, not sure what happened to it

Henry is pretty much useless if they are going to be gashed week after week like they have been
Have had trade offers for him but so low value you have to keep him

Harbaugh seems to be dead man walking

Highly doubt that, but he might be forced to make changes.

Starting DL players Madubuike and Washington are on IR. Other players out due to injury yesterday: LB Smith, CB Humphrey, S Hamilton, CB Awuzie. That is 6 starters, including 4 of their top 5 highest paid defensive players. And there were others on the injury report who played. I doubt any NFL defense could suffer this kind of attrition and play well.

Yes, all those players are out. So they have non NFL level players in their 2 deep?

Sorry, players being out is only part of it. Seems like there is more going on here

You asked what happened to the defense. I told you.

It is an unfortunate aspect of the way the salary cap works in the NFL nowadays that there are usually a handful of players with high contracts while most of the rest of the roster are on relatively low contracts. Contract value is obviously an imperfect proxy for talent, yet we know that teams give out high contracts to players they expect to be their most talented non-rookie contract players. No NFL team can lose 4 of its top 5 paid defensive players and continue to play well.

Yes, teams have depth. And the dropoff from players like Madubuike, Smith, Humphrey, and Hamilton to those depth players is massive.

I imagine there are a number of GMs in a precarious position of do I start this guy next week?

If you've got great options, its getting to the point where you won't second guess sitting him. Many won't have the luxury of a no brainer though

Over the Shaun Alexander cliff he goes..................

Please don't remind me of having the #1 draft pick that season.

Incredible nose dive. And those that remember it know that it can happen to anyone... even the immortal King Henry.
This rush to bury vets is wild to me. Henry has been NOTHING like Alexander's cliff season. Alexander had no burst left and was averaging 3.5 a carry. Henry showed clear burst when Lamar was playing. He's still averaging 5.0 a carry.

I honestly think Henry is a good buy-low, if the owner in your league thinks they are getting out while they still can. Henry is still a clear cut top-10 RB with Lamar in my opinion.

Shaun Alexander's "cliff season" came after a kind of transition season. 2004 he's fantasy football MVP, 2005 he broke his foot, 2006 (Redskins) started out nicely... 1st 3 games... then he fell off the cliff.

Maybe we're seeing Henry's transition season. The fumbles are uncharacteristic. Salvaged a terrible game yesterday with a TD (maybe previous game as well).

Time will tell. I don't see him running for 200 yards at 75 yrs old so, sometime between now and then he's done.

I would never bet against Henry, but we all fall off the cliff eventually

I benched him and will do so again this weekend vs a stout Ram front that will key on him. Houston keyed on him for an average of 0.7 yards before contact which is horrible.

Not sure why some think he's done knowing the situation there with injuries on D changing game scripts, no Lamar, and poor line blocking along with a poor Cooper Rush at QB.

After the bye Chicago and Miami defenses await. If Lamar returns he'll be back in my lineup. He's still 7th in the league for yards after contact per attempt at 2.4.

A buy low candidate in my opinion.

This is not due to Henry regressing, this is due to game script mostly and teams taking him out with stacked boxes

Hopefully when Lamar comes back the OC gets it together and has better game plans

For the sake of accuracy, Alexander signed with the Redskins for depth in mid-season of 2008 (never played for them in 2006) at the age of 31. He had a grand total of 11 carries for 24 yards before being released a month later.

He had already fallen way off the cliff. And never played another snap.

What sucks is that "game script" has always limited Henry's potential. Going back to the Titans days. Guy has a ton of talent but can't find a break on a team that'll let him use it.

What seems frustrating is that he seems good enough to overcome the "game script" if the staff would just take the leash off him. Let him get 5-6 yards a carry and grind it out, stop trying to force passes and work around him... just work with him.

He needs to bash straight ahead into a defense, even for minimal gain, over and over to wear them down so they're gassed halfway through the 3rd quarter and then he can steamroll over them. That's the "game script" that works that they should be using with him.

Seriously. With Baltimore in the state they are in, running Henry 20+ times regardless of the outcome should be the goal every game to maybe give their defense a rest. I don't understand how coach a don't see this.

Keeping in mind that coaches see things every day in practice that we do not.

So they "see" their defense looking putrid and decided that Henry should only get 9 carries

Henry's first 2 years he was backup to DeMarco Murray, but since he became a lead back in the NFL, his teams are 21-39 when he rushes under 20 times, and 40-10 when he has 20+ rushes.

Every single game, i'd make sure Henry had 20+. I don't care if they were down 21-0. Find exotic ways to run the ball with Henry. At that point what does it matter? Just take some heat off your D for a series maybe and wear on the opposing defense.

I'm sure you're right... the Ravens staff probably look at each other on Sundays and say, "We have no idea what we're doing. We should just ask the pretend football coaches on the Shark Pool and go with that."

Outside of his "fresh legs" game in week 1... he has been less than impressive. Except for the rash of fumbles... they have been highlights.

I hate this kind of post. We aren’t coaches, we are merely fans, so we can’t possibly know better about anything. So why have a forum to discuss topics? We should all just trust that the NFL coaches know better and therefore there is no need to discuss anything.

If he's that cooked, why haven't they given any other back a shot then?

Nobody said Henry is cooked. Don't be so dramatic.

Hold on, hold... let me write this down. Tau837 hates posts that respond unfavorably to other posts. Got it. Thank you.

You're correct by the way in your attempt at sarcasm... you CAN"T possibly know better (than the coaches/staff). That is a true statement.

No kidding. Wow, thanks for enlightening me.

:sarcasm:

I stand by my reaction. Your sarcastic response to another poster relies upon the fact that the coaches know better than that poster. If you are going to respond that way, you are basically saying there is no point in questioning the coaching decisions. So no point in having this discussion.

I'll pause here so you can write that down.
