RB Derrick Henry, BAL (5 Viewers)

Not worried at all. First game of the season, unfavorable game script, lots of rust from the entire team, against a good defense in a tough environment—and he still got a TD. He’s the type of runner that needs volume to punish the defensive line and when they tire out is capable of breaking some big runs. Yesterday was one of this “floor” games imo—and it wasn’t that bad.

Those worried about the O-line, aren't you also worried about Hill? He looked good in his role.
That's not going away either.
He did.
Worthy and Likely and...he's kind of overshadowed but he did look very good.

The Chiefs were all about the middle of the field and the Ravens wisely took advantage of the outside lanes. When the Chiefs weren't, Lamar ran rather easily up the middle and the Chiefs went back to being all about shutting down the middle of the field. It felt like cat n mouse all night.

Their line was retooled a bit. Henry has other week ones where he's curiously not utilized enough. I don't have a bit of panic in me about Henry. Harbaugh is only not a throwback and all creative when he has to be. If the line is clicking and they can run fifty times and remind people of Joe Gibbs, then they will. And then Harbaugh will call it their best offensive gameplan ever too.

Harbaugh was downright giddy about adding Henry and that even hung around where he was still smiling weeks later. There's no doubt he's going to utilize him plenty.

Back to Hill- remember a lot of the Henry can't catch discussion did have "well why even have him in in third down?" I think Hill has a chance to be Faulk, Meggett, McKinnon there

I can just never understand... if I had a franchise QB locked up for years my 1st round pick would just constantly be O-Line.. O-Lin, O-line, O-Line. I see it all the time, these teama draft a stud QB and then just expect magic to happen in front of them
thats the thing. so many teams spend a high first round pick on the QB or give him a big pile of cash to play for you and then dont invest in the line to protect your investment.

seems elementary but apparently for some teams its not.

We knew their O-line was much worse than last year, but people in this thread still thought he was going to get 1800-2000 yards this year somehow.

He’s a factor but how many top RBs don’t have a guy behind them to take some of the load?
Hil isn't just providing a break. He is the 3rd down / 2 minute guy. And things will only get worse when Keaton comes back.
I avoided Henry for many reasons.

Ok.
Henry is a better version of David Montgomery, hill a dime store Gibbs.
Not concerned about DH at all.

Yeah, while I dont like the way their line looked, there wont be too many weeks where Baltimore is chasing the game like they were last night.

Not worried. He's going to be fine, IMO

Agree that Henry will almost certainly have much better game scripts going forward, when he has 20+ carry games. That said, he's still probably not going to be a factor in obvious passing downs - which of course is not unlike much of his career so far, but at this later stage of his career, one has to wonder how many long ones he'll be able to break off like he used to. Just have to hope enough of the short TDs are going to be there.

He looked slow and lost a half step which is crazy given how ripped he is

I think he’s a latter day bettis type on the stat line now, I still like him for a floor of 13 TDs but that will be the extent of his impact

This is where I am

He looks slow and I think the game has moved on from him

I own him on 80 percent of my teams and I'm expecting quite a few 43 yards, no catches and maybe a td games

not a great fit in shotgun heavy scheme and we all knew he’d be a spectator on passing downs/hurry up.
How often do you expect the Ravens to be playing from behind? Sure, they’ll have 2 minute drill type situations like all teams do. But I think they’ll have far more “run the clock out while moving the chains” situations.
I don't know but it's not like they were down more then 2 scores at any time. This excuse is falling a little flat for me tbh.

Agreed this game was pretty tight

Wearing down the d with the running game was viable almost the entire game

I don't think he looked any slower than he has the past couple of seasons but the line wasn't giving him much to run through. It's been covered well by others but it wasn't his type of game script. Last night will be the exception, not the rule, for the Ravens this season.

Lamar running around and either taking off or trying to find an open wr is the Raven MO. That's what they did last night in a close game. There was zero reason to move away from the run. That's what they have done traditionally as well

That doesn't look like it's going to change much. They have a tough schedule and Pit and Cle are tough Ds in division

One concern was the Baltimore O-line coming into the season, and they did not impress (I don't imagine the new illegal formation rules will help). A lot less read options from the Ravens than I had expected, we'll see if that changes.

I feel like the amped up atmosphere of that game made Lamar put the game on his shoulders. I'm betting he's pretty sore today. I'd imagine he won't last 3/4 of the season if he runs around like that every week. Henry will get better game scripts. They will lean on him more as the season goes on

Interesting comment by Dave Kluge in his Matchup Previews article:

"Derrick Henry won't have massive workload, per USA Today"

I wish he provided links, I'd like to know in what context this was said, who said it, etc. He has such a good matchup on paper - I have other options, but none of them have good matchups.

Who is Dave Kluge?

I think he's just re-iterating Harbaugh's comment that "We didn't sign Henry to give him 30 carries a game"

I think Henry will have a big game. Their o-line is bad, but Lamar won't feel compelled to play hero ball against Gardnew-Minshew.

Back to Ravens football. Guessing anywhere from 15-20 touches for Henry.

Sure, the Ravens can say they didn't sign Henry to get 30 carries a game, but they certainly didn't sign him to be outcarried by Lamar.
In week 1, Lamar Jackson had 16 carries, and the Ravens lost
In week 1, Derrick Henry had 13 carries, and the Ravens lost

I'd bet good money Derrick Henry won't get outcarried in week 2

I wouldn't mind if they keep his carries low this season, as long as he's their RZ back in 1-2 possession games. I'm anxious to see how they use him in the second half of games they're winning: will they let him punish worn down defenses or will they preserve him?

I predict he will have fewer than 30 (massive!) carries but more than 13 (last game's total) today. And if they get up by 20 points, I expect Henry will have played a part.

I'm terms of game script, I think close but winning > clear favorite > close but losing > getting blown out will be his most productive games for fantasy. I'm still optimistic that week 1 will be a floor game.

I think positive game script plus emphasis on getting him the ball, he ends up with 20 carries and maybe 1-2 catches this week. Hopefully that translates into 100+ yards and a TD.

Henry TD on a direct snap wildcat with LJ broken out as a WR.

One day they'll realize they don't need the decoy on that play. Take LJ off the field and bring in an additional lineman and it'll be nearly unstoppable.

I mean from a fantasy perspective the day was somewhat saved but this is a game he should have feasted and he looked like not so much
