Broncos, Browns close to a deal

The Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos are close to a trade that would strongly bolster the Browns backfield before the draft while giving Denver their second first-round DE in two days.

Sources have told FOXSports.com that the Browns and Broncos are in deep talks regarding a trade that would send last year's Broncos breakout back Reuben Droughns to Cleveland for defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban.

Ekuban, the former first-round pick, had surgery recently on his knee and shoulder and is not expected to be healthy until May. He is expected to visit the Broncos this week, but due to the health concerns, the two sides have discussed working out appropriate draft choice compensation for the 2006 draft if Ekuban cannot return to full strength in time for the season. However, if Ekuban's physical pans out well, the two sides may agree to a straight up player-for-player deal without any stipulation.

Droughns amassed a surprising 1,240 yards rushing last year, impressive numbers considering he didn't take over the primary ball carrier role until the second week of October. He also hauled in an impressive 32 passes for 241 yards and scored eight TDs — six on the ground. Droughns had six 100-yard rushing games — including games of 193, 176 and 166 yards — as Denver's coaching staff and offensive line churned out yet another 1,000-yard rusher.

Ekuban, a former first-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, had his best sack total of his career in 2004 when he tabbed eight QB takedowns. His previous high was 6.5 during his sophomore season. His former defensive line coach in Cleveland, Andre Patterson, is now an assistant on the Broncos' staff.

Droughns joins a Browns backfield that was split between William Green and Lee Suggs last year. However, Droughns was more productive than those two combined last season. The move also allows Cleveland to focus on a position other than running back in the first round of this year's draft

is that a freakin' joke? Have the Broncos confused the 2004 Browns with the '76 Steelers? Why are they trying to bring over the entire Cleveland Defensive line??

I just read that a deal is fairly close to send Droughs to the Browns for EkubanIf this goes through, may we actually see a training camp with a clear cut starting RB for the Broncos in Bell? What is the world coming to!!!Edited to add that I just saw the other thread about this. My bad. Mods, please handle accordingly with my sincere apologies. Here's the blurb from the hotwire:Broncos | Close to Dealing Droughns for Ekuban - from www.KFFL.comTue, 29 Mar 2005 12:06:28 -0800Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Denver Broncos are in serious talks with the Cleveland Browns about acquiring DE Ebenezer Ekuban (shoulder, knee) for RB Reuben Droughns. Both sides are also discussing appropriate draft choice compensation for 2006 should Ekuban not return to full strength in time for the season. Ekuban recently underwent knee and shoulder surgery, but if he is able to pass the Broncos' physical, both teams could just agree to the player-for-player swap without any stipulations.

Very interesting. I would imagine Droughns is far from guaranteed a starting job in Cleveland, but would instead battle with Suggs for that right. Should this trade occur though, it would seem even less likely that CLE gets involved in the RB run at the top of the draft (not that they were considered players for the big 3 in the first place).

this would devastate suggs value and greatly increase droughns value. i would imagine that suggs would be one injury away from the travis henry/a-train purgatory for RBs.

Not just the line ... but they brought over the DL coach, too :rotflmao:

Oh, well that makes sense then, I mean all 3 of these guys were "uber-studs" with him as their coach.

I don't think so. Droughns was given the permission to seek a trade BECUASE he wanted to be the starter. I think Droughns and his agent will make that a stipulation of this trade.

Yep, I haven't really thought that the Browns would be looking at a RB at #3 overall anyway, but a trade for Droughns would seem to seal the deal. Potentially some good news for my home-town team though (Minnesota Vikings)!

This might actually be worse for Bell owners. With a gimpy Griffin and M.Anderson left to backup Bell....Shanny might draft yet another RB from this talented rb crop...one that has a better chance of taking the starting job from Bell than Droughns did.

Very surprised by this. Guess Romeo and Phil don't have much faith in Lee Suggs. William Green's release could quickly follow this trade.

Why's that?

Rushing

Suggs - 744

Green - 585

DROUGHNS - 1240

Receiving

Suggs - 178

Green - 84

DROUGHNS - 385

Rueben produced more than both of them combined! Suggs will be the back-up, barring injury.

Very Good News for Droughns owners!!!

Droughns is no position to dictate anything to anyone. He will be in the mix for a starting job which is better than his current situation. Beggars can't be choosers and people aren't exactly knocking down the door for Droughns to be their starter (for good reason in my opinion).

Yep. Definitely keep an eye on that. Especially if Denver drafts one on the first day.

Problem is that one ran for the arguably the best rushing offense in the league while the other rushed for the worst. Apples and oranges.

So true :)

so here's the question:if this goes through, which scenario plays out?A) Suggs is the unquestionable starter and Droughns waits for him to get hurt again.B) Open competition between suggs and Droughns in campi would say B only because you have a new sheriff in town (crennel) and everyone has to prove themselves over again. Also the fact that the browns are seeking droughns(as opposed to say henry or a-train or poopy) makes me think they are high on him.

If this deal goes down, I don't see how he doesn't get the leg up on the starting job. And Skeletor can't really draft a running back on day one, can he? :bs:

Honestly, this is the best news i have heard this whole offseason. I was an owner who jumped on the droughns bandwagon. Now i am stuck with only one true starting RB. Here are my RB's:Chatman, Jesse SDC RB Davis, Stephen CAR RB Droughns, Reuben DEN RB Fuamatu-Ma'afala, Chris JAC RB Goings, Nick CAR RB Green, William CLE RB Haynes, Verron PIT RB Hicks, Maurice SFO RB Parker, Willie PIT RB Tomlinson, Ladainian SDC RB So i really really need this trade to happen. :excited: :excited:

Yes, remember the Broncos have extra picks in the third round. Anderson is old. Neither Bell nor Griffin have proved durable. They'll draft someone. Its been reported that they like Moats.

There has been speculation that the Broncos are quite high on Ryan Moats.I'd have to believe whether its Moats or someone else, the Broncos will draft a backup and all kinds of Bell vs. Denver RB rookie threads will crop up.

Every Suggs owner =  :hot:

adding...Bell owner =
Maybe.. but I fully expect Skeletor to draft yet another back around round 3-4-5 just to keep things interesting for all of us fantasy footballers. :football:
owners of denver starting RBs should never feel comfortable. actually i think this is a net loss for bell because it makes it that much more likely that shanny drafts an RB this year. if they keep droughns, he might feel comfortable enough to pass on the RBs, but without droughns, this RB class will be too tempting for shanny to not get one of "his guys"

Bingo.. home run Bloomer. That's precisely my point.

The Browns were seeking Chester Taylor as well. This move is about on pace with what I expected from them. I don't think they're in love with Taylor or Droughns. I think that Crennel looks at Suggs and sees a guy that can be a top tailback, IF he can stay healthy. But as last year proved, that's a pretty big IF. With William Green being shown the door and little faith in Eichimandu, the Browns needed to bring in another back to compete. Its clear that Crennel prefers a veteran.I fully expect both backs to compete in camp for the starting job in camp. I don't believe anyone will be handed anything in Browns camp.

I think Suggs is going to be the favorite, but not by any wide margin. Maybe 60-40.

no, 25 man roster. i only have 6 WR's. Owens, Lee Evans, Roy williams, Marcus Robinson, peter warrick and ike "FA" hillard.

Couldn't agree more. watch out for a first-day move from Denver if this goes down

Put this in the Browns Draft thread...If this Doughns-Ekuban trade goes through I see two other things quickly happening:(1) William Green gets released.(2) Browns sign Ravens DE Marques Douglas.Pure guesses at this point. Also agree with BH...Suggs and Droughns will battle it out in TC.

Precisely. I had the #5 pick in a rookie draft last year. I figured that pick would buy Julius Jones or Tatum Bell. The idea of selecting Bell scared the daylights out of me and motivated me to trade up to #1. (Where I took Kevin Jones.)It isn't that I dislike Bell. I'm quite aware that the Broncos RB will always put up numbers, but they tend to have a short shelf life. Be it Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis, Quintin Griffin, Tatum Bell or 05 Denver rookie RB. Your grasp on the Denver RB situation is never a firm one.

In a dynasty league I'm afraid this would scare me into perpetual "Sell high" mode every time I held the Denver RB and he had a good game. I just don't know if its worth the headache.

I own Suggs in a couple leagues so I could be seen as biased here, but I'm in the camp who doesn't see Droughns as much more than a career backup. He failed to impress me last year and I think his stats were a product of the Denver system more than they were a product of his talent. I think he's an insurance policy for Cleveland and I expect Suggs to ultimately be the opening day starter.

if you're the bell owner, you have to do whatever it takes to get the RB that shanny drafts, no ifs ands or buts about it. and that is going to really suck because everyone loves the Denver RB production. if moats goes to denver in the 3rd, i could honestly see some people taking him 4th in dynasty drafts, and i dont think he would get past 10 in most drafts. shanny is not the most hated man in FF for nuthin.

Good point Britt.

suggs's zealots IDP is in the 30s, and droughns's is in the 130s. anyone care to guess where those numbers would end up with this trade factored in (without any official statement from the browns as to suggs job security)?i would say they would end up close to equal, meeting somewhere in the 90s. this is honestly a huge hit to suggs value. with willie green there, you could feel comfortable that even if suggs got hurt, the job would be waiting for him when he got back. after watching droughns last year, and knowing that he has a very sound all around game, there's no guarantees that suggs remains the man no matter how good he looked before he got hurt. suggs has already missed the better part of 2 seasons due to injury. one more and i would think they will be done with him.

Man, thats not good. But at least you got a first round pick. I only have two fifth rounders. :(

This is the equivelant of giving a 3rd or 4th round pick for Droughns. Ekuban is former 1st rounder but he has been oft injured and his equivelant value is a much later pick now.I don't have Suggs in any league, but i'm shocked anyone actually thinks Droughns is coming in to compete for the starting job.At best RBBC, more likely Suggs is starter unless he gets hurt.Looks like the Droughns owners have flooded the thread which gives the impression he is now the starter in Cleveland, which couldn't be farther from the truth.Suggs gets injured a lot, so there is hope for Droughns to get a start every now and then, but that's about it.

I would think that Suggs would be around 45 and Droughns around 50-55. I think that Suggs has the upper hand in any competition. Both backs that were rumored to acquire (taylor 1st and now Droughns) are nothing special but are good back-ups and can push Suggs more than Green can.

I know he is not the starter if he goes into cleveland. All i can do is hope so i can have at least 2 starting RB's. I think if suggs is the starter and doesn't do well in the first or second game, it will be droughns time again :D

Maybe I'm biased as well as a Suggs owner in a Dynasty league but I agree with EBF on this one. I'll actually be relieved if this trade goes through as it pretty much guarantees Cleveland will not draft a RB. I'd be more concerned if they spent a 1st-3rd round pick on a rookie. I don't see Droughns as much of a threat to Suggs at all. I see him as essentially an insurance policy in case Suggs gets hurt AGAIN :wall:

If the trade goes through and Suggs is the starter, Droughns should still get 10+ touches a game. He would probably get 0-5 in Denver as the fullback.

I think the pro-Suggs people are a bit delusional that Droughns will be nothing more than a backup.

Think about it: you have a new coaching regime that inherited the incumbent Suggs. Maybe they like him a lot, but then they go and actually trade for another RB, who has proven his salt for virtually an entire year.

If this goes through, I fully expect a training camp battle.

i think some people in this thread are seriously selling droughns short. he had 6 100 yard game in a 7 game stretch, including 3 over 150. "product of the system" or not, you have to be a very solid RB to put that kind of string together.

Then how come nobody likes Nick Goings for 2005?Colin
