RB Isiah Pacheco, KC (3 Viewers)

One game, but very troubling usage. He was never a supreme talent, but mainly a hard nosed runner. A lot of people will be looking at Hunt, but I think the shark move may be to stash Brashard Smith if this backfield is more wide open than expected.
I laughed at people drafting tired looking Hunt but should have done that looking in the mirror for at least buying a little of the Pachecho is back and discounted hype. Did not draft him much but oof. I dropped a few 6th round picks on him and I'd not touch him in round 11-12 now.

I'm not really interested in any of them. Recall a report from a few weeks ago they were happy with Pachecho but wanted a third down back with some juice. That report seems mainly bogus. What they need is a starting RB with juice. They'd managed to make it work with this collection of mid the last few years but wonder if they will finally veer a little and try and pick someone up in a trade? Losing changes mindsets.

But if I was going to pick up anyone from this backfield you are right, relative to cost, I'd rather draft Smith.

Yeah, Pacheco looked like he doesn't have much to offer anymore. Nothing. All that energy and movement, so little of it going forward to gain positive yards. It looked slow. Maybe that was the defense? A poor line?

Kansas City really stinks on offense. And people are saying that if any team missed their two best receivers that they would. That isn't an illegitimate claim. That is until somebody looks at each of the WR1 and WR2's aDOT. Their offense doesn't go forward or beyond their own line of scrimmage. It's the ugliest design and the least effective advancement I can really remember seeing for one that can actually score every so often.

I loathe it and I'm not sure how much of its ugliness is attributable to receivers who can't run patterns, a quarterback who lacks a good enough offensive line to sit in the pocket, or the QBs own fitness and his downfield arm.

I think they've got to reconstruct the whole roster and get Patty in shape again, but he's getting older and athletes that lose it don't seem to get their former glory back. I feel like the Chiefs are done as an entity and you should get what you can for their guys, but that's clearly an overreaction to a bad opening game in a far-away foregin country where their routine is disrupted and the living conditions, while posh in comparison to a lot of the world, pale in comparison to Europe and America.

Usage is terrible. They've got to work Smith in more or at least somebody else in more, don't they? That thing that looks like Kareem Hunt who is also carrying the full weight of a younger Karaeem Hunt on its back can't be the guy, can he?

Chiefs Week 1 RB Utilization

Isiah Pacheco: 48% snaps, 42% attempts, 44% routes, 8% targets

Kareem Hunt: 40% snaps, 37% attempts, 37% routes, 8% targets

Brashard Smith: 14% snaps, 0% attempts, 13% routes, 0% targets

Remember when Andy Reid was an RB kingmaker? Sad times.

Waaay too much Kareem Hunt for my liking. The entire KC offense looks out of whack other than Mahomes. Small sample size but I'm worried - maybe things will start clicking again when Rice returns?.

Terrible game but should have better game scripts... maybe. Was anyone using him as anything more than a flex though?

Pacheco was in that "Big Question Marks" tier of players. I like to scoop up 4 or 5 of these guys every year, and see if just one hits. Had to start him as flex this week because of question marks elsewhere, but after week 1 I'll have a better idea of how the other guys are looking. Might play the hot hand/best matchup game and the guy who does the worst is my waiver wire drop guy.

Yeah that's where I was at. Started Pacheco in the flex over Harvey because week 1, wanted to see how DEN deploys Harvey. Hopefully have more clarity going into next week.

I started Pacheco in one league and that certainly sucked. With that said—I’m not losing any hope at all. The dude had a 5.0 average yard per carry—and it’s not like Kareem Hunt looked better. We also had a game where the Kansas City offense was flipped over on its head three plays into the game when one of their biggest weapons got hurt. I think the Kansas City will have no choice but to establish some sort of bigger and more meaningful running game with both Worthy and Rice out. I also think that the running back position this season is going to be similar to the tight end position last year. I think that outside of a handful solid/consistent contributors—you are going to have hit/miss weeks for the middle and lower tier guys from that position. I’m not panicking on Pacheco yet—and frankly—I’d probably consider buying low in the other two leagues where I don’t have him rostered.

yep. 5 yards per carry. not bad.

its hard to truly judge the situation as RB usually dont put up good numbers when their team is losing. and KC was behind for pretty much the whole game.

Yards per carry were decent, but the sample size was also too small to really draw a whole lot in terms of conclusions.

Absolutely—I agree. I think the sample size was small enough to where it’s impossible for anybody to make any conclusions that are different than when their fantasy drafts were. However, the “eye test” didn’t scare me in regard to Kareem Hunt—(meaning I certainly didn’t see him looking better than Pacheco). While the game script for that very game wasn’t great for Pacheco—I do think that some of the outcomes from the game could bode well for him. The KC passing attack will be taking a hit with the Worthy news. I can’t see them wanting to play games where their TOTAL TEAM RUSHING ATTEMPTS COMBINED TO BE ONE FEWER TARGET THAN WHAT HOLLYWOOD BROWN HAD. I didn’t use all caps to yell that out at you—I just wanted to emphasize that I don’t think that this dynamic will be something that Kansas City will want to repeat in future game scripts.

yeah I drafted hunt in a rather deep league even though I didnt have Pacheco. There is always the risk that the injury lingers or whatever. He did have a surgery, so its not a run of the mill break of a bone. I know people were poo pooing that pacheco was not productive when he returned from the injury last year but I researched the injury some and felt they likely brought him back too soon. being recovered to the point where you can play is different than being recovered to a point where you can play and be productive.

but whenever there is a surgery, there is more risk than your normal bone break. so for me picking hunt in the late stages of the draft I was in felt like a reasonable lotto ticket even though I was 90% sure Pacheco would be fine.

Like I said in two other threads, Kareem Hunt looked like he had achieved the physically impossible task of swallowing himself and then carrying that swallowed self on his back.

Pacheco looked horrible. I don't know what else to say or what root cause there was but he's not a very good back.

Brashard Smith is a converted wide receiver?

They just lost their top two receivers for a while.

Oh my, this doesn't look good for anybody in red. I don't know what you do with Pacheco because both his usage and his talent render him not only not startable, but nearly not rosterable.

Absolutely makes sense—and there is nothing wrong with using late round draft picks on running backs lottery tickets. If Pacheco were to get hurt—the expected volume increase of Hunt would by itself making him a nice commodity. I certainly hope that my post didn’t come across as slamming Hunt or implying that he was not rosterable. He certainly is—and I certainly didn’t see any other competition for him should Pacheco go down.
