RB J.K. Dobbins, DEN (3 Viewers)

All things considered, don't think we could have asked for a better landing spot for Dobbins. Back with Greg Roman. New HC who loves to run and has no existing ties to other RBs on the roster. No "star" back currently on the roster. And with few, if any, "star" backs in the draft, he should have a very good shot at earning touches sooner than later if he's healthy.
I agree with this, but does anyone remember that long break away run after returning from his 2022 injury? He looked like he needed a walker on that run. Practically limping midway and towards the end of the run. Then he had the torn Achilles after that. Color me skeptical of his ability now.

Does anyone remember any run other than this one?
Only reason I mentioned it was that it stood out to me.
I definitely tacked the most important part of my previous post on the end in hopes of minimizing it out of existence lol. "If he's healthy" does nearly ALL the heavy lifting there. And after some of the discourse around Pollard last year, I should clarify I mean "if he's healthy" more in a sense of if he can return to around 80% of what his pre-injury talent level was. The top end speed doesn't bother me as much as fear of his lateral agility, ability to make first contact, ability to stay healthy, etc. But yeah, he really needs all of that to make the most of the touches he gets. Otherwise he'll be yielding those touches or outright replaced sooner than later.

The run is at the 20 second mark of this video...

Yikes

He looked better in some runs that came after that. I’m sure other people have better notes on the subject but he was clearly trending in the right direction until he tore his achilles. We shall see how he does with the chargers but I expect them to sign/draft some rookie backs.

Eta. We already know his coach likes corum and he shouldn’t demand high draft capitol. Js.

I wouldn't be sure Corum doesn't go higher than projected. He's the only top guy who has really shown he can handle big workloads. I think he could go in round 2.

Its kinda funny how Roman, Gus, and now Dobbins, have basically just switched Harbaughs.

I'm expecting Gus to be clearly ahead of Dobbins, post Achilles.

I can't get past the metrics that show his tackle avoidance, which was elite in 2022, was gone in 2023.

If you draft Corum, you need him to bounce back. I hope he does, and he's in my list of guys I like, but I won't chase him like I'll chase other guys

Subjectively, he looked better late. I think he just wasn't healthy early.

Hard to believe, but Dobbins has a path to real fantasy relevance if he can finally stay healthy.

I wouldn't bet on him getting back that explosion, but I'll be rooting for him for sure.

My one fantasy team where I’m rostering him is definitely rooting for him. He’s a Hold and Hope.

I don't think I ca n be pulled back in. I hope the good news keeps flowing and lowers Edwards ADP even more.

Agreed. Reporters can continue to write great things about JK all they want, but until I see for myself that he is flying around the practice field making great cuts and having burst, I am going to assume he is still hobbled. With guys coming back from bad injuries, I want more than "you just have to have faith".

P.S. I just saw Usain Bolt steal JK's wallet, and JK chased him down and got it back. I don't have video, you just have to trust me.

Considering Bolt's Achilles injury was far more recent, this is likely!

It wouldn't seem to make any sense for JK Dobbins to be productive after his repeat injuries, where even just one would derail a RB's career but if I'm not mistaken, the Chargers current OC was the OC from the Ravens from 2019 - 2023.

So it's not like he's now playing for a new OC, Greg Roman has been his OC for his entire career. He's beat out Gus Edwards after devasting injury before. Greg Roman has acknowledged that he is the superior RB to Edwards year after year. He knows which RB is more talented.

I would probably guess he could get 8-10 touches a week and if he looks good, maybe that gets bumped up to 10-12 and if he looks good, maybe that gets bumped up to 12-14 and if he looks good, maybe that gets bumped up to 14-16.

The same reason people like Kimani Vidal is transitive to why you should like Dobbins. It's just Gus Edwards ahead of him. Plus, it's the same exact scheme he's played in his entire career. What are reports out of camp? Does he look explosive? I'm assuming he'll be playing Week 1, I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

If this kind of comeback were to happen, this is exactly what it would look like.

God help me I’m getting interested again for redraft.

Edwards is 29, Vidal is kinda meh.

If he can stay healthy, league-winning upside in a Roman offense at a dirt cheap price.

*if is doing Olympic gold level lifting in that sentence.

Gus and JK have been teammates since JK entered the league in 2020. In that time, Gus has 751 more yards and 9 more TD's. I am more than happy to concede Dobbins is the better RB. Nobody is disputing this fact. But one thing you can't deny - Dobbins has a grand total of 4 double digit PPR games in the last 3 years. He is completely useless if he's watching from the sidelines.

Also, you mention it's the same exact scheme JK's played his entire career. The same applies to Gus. As far as camp reports, I would believe a used car salesman over an NFL coach. Show me a current video of Dobbins running and cutting at full speed, then I will assume he'll be playing week 1. Anything short of video proof before the season begins and I'd bet he is in street clothes week 1.

God help me I’m getting interested again for redraft. Based on what? His one game last year, where he got a measly 37 yards on 10 touches, right before his leg fell off?

Edwards is 29, Vidal is kinda meh. Edwards age is a non-factor, when you consider he has 729 NFL touches. That's the equivalent of 2 workhorse seasons.

If he can stay healthy, league-winning upside in a Roman offense at a dirt cheap price. Perhaps if JK stays healthy and Gus gets injured, but what are the odds both those things happen?

honestly, when healthy hes looked like a stud.

problem is I think I've only seen him fully healthy once or twice. I'm sure one or two games he was healthy where I didnt watch but thats not a very good ratio given how long he has been in the league.

I have never questioned the guys talent, but I question his ability to stay healthy. Now he is coming back from an Achilles. an injury that ends the career of more than 50% of the RB's who have this injury (and I'm probably being kind the % is likely higher)

the ONLY thing that gives me pause on completely passing him over. he played for Harbaughs brother in Baltimore. I suspect a conversation between brothers took place regarding him. I suspect he would have been talked out of bringing him in to LA if the belief was that he couldnt come back.

so for that reason, and that reason alone I'm not writing him off completely, but hes very very low on my draftable list.

Week 12 - Monday Night Football - Ravens vs Chargers
You must not have any brothers, because if you did, you would think the exact opposite. If John thought Dobbins could come back healthy, he would've kept him for himself. Instead, he packed up a 25-year old stud and sent him over to a rival AFC team, hoping he would come back strong so he could face him in week 12? Older brother John knows Dobbins is toast, and tricked his little brother into wasting time trying to trying to pull a "Steve Austin, Astronaut".

I'm willing to take a chance on Dobbins as long as it's late in the draft. This is a team that's clearly committed to the run but with no clear pecking order. If Dobbins gets hurt yet again or shows that injuries have totally sapped his effectiveness, it can be an easy roster cut with limited opportunity cost associated with it.

My problem right now is, who says he ever "got healthy"? All we know for sure is 11 months ago he suffered a torn Achilles. I know I sound like a broken record here, but since then, not a single video has surfaced of Dobbins running and cutting at full speed, even without pads. This reminds me of wrestler Jimmy Snuka in the 1980's. As a commentator, Vince McMahon said he was in Fiji on a sabbatical, but he was in fact, in jail. I still have the newspaper article where he fought off multiple cops and even a few cop dogs. At times, playing FF is like a religion - you just have to have faith that a player is good to go, with no proof whatsoever.

Sure, at a given point every active player is draftable, but to think he is healthy because his coaches say so is naive. And for the record, I would most certainly draft Dobbins over Vidal. I may be stupid, but I'm not dumb.

Absolutely it's a leap of faith, but sounds like a high potential reward/low risk pick if you use a late pick.

Here is a video with some cuts and movement in it from camp, just practice but he doesn’t look bad and Harbaugh even comments on his acceleration. It is just practice, but something. You may downgrade him on his quirky sense of humor though.

Exactly. Use a late pick and expect to never use him. If you go in with that attitude, you won't be bummed if he never provides a quality FF start. I just checked FBG rankings, and he is at RB46. Looking just around him, there are too many guys I'd take over him, so I will probably miss out.

This was awesome! Thank you so much. I've seen Sasquatch! I literally just moved him up a round in my head.

I have always thought he could be a top back in the league, hope he can keep his wheels healthy to show it. I will be drafting him even if I have to reach a bit, the upside is too good where he is going. I also understand those that do not want any part of him, but I just cannot quit him.

Been waiting for Superfly to be brought up as an analogy for a players health. Check that box. Luv it

of course. nobody with any brains is drafting him in the first 5 rounds when the starters are drafted

hes a flyer you make in the last or second to last round of your draft on the off chance he can still play and is healthy enough to do so.

and you do it knowing that its at least a 50% chance the guy is done.

Every single year in my long time redraft league I think I drop my last 4 draft picks within the first 3-4 weeks. Injuries happen. Players breakout….exactly the kind of low-commitment spot for a player like Dobbins.

Same. Back end of roster is specifically for hit or miss guys you pick up and drop 100 times. Ha ha
