RB Austin Ekeler (5-8 5/8, 198) ran the 40 in 4.49 and 4.48 seconds, had a 40.5-inch vertical, a 10-8 broad jump, a 4.28-second short shuttle, and a 6.92-second three-cone. He's a projected post-draft free agent.

I’m more excited about him now, although it’s not surprising he’s fast. I do think he fits the “3rd down” RB that’s more and more important in the NFL but not sure he can carry the load. Still he’ll get valuable touches.

He at least showed he is as fast as advertised. If you are going to be 199 then the speed has to be elite. He's got it. Hopefully he lands in an offense that can maximize his receiving skills.

The way teams distribute the ball now, a 3rd down back+ is a borderline RB 1. Maybe he can’t carry the load, but 8+ carries? To supplement the passing game work?

Yes, in the right offense he’s a solid 1.02 pick. May not win you your league but could contribute to it.
I think he's more then a third down back but no one should expect high volume running numbers.
CMC, Kamara, Ekeler and even whipping boy Swift(whose PPG production is not a terrible floor) are all examples of RB's who have scored more fantasy points in their careers in the receiving game then the running game. I'll be surprised if Gibbs does not follow that same path. With some RB's I just think you got to scout what they do in the receiving game first, what they offer as rushing production as the secondary trait.

It helps as far as BMI, but 199 pounds is still pretty light- we haven't seen many sub-200 pound RBs thrive in the NFL. I'm not moving him down from the 1.02, but it does give some pause. Ekeler is what we will all hope to get if he's added to our roster.

This. Gibbs did not show much power in college, and he will not be used in short-yardage situations in the NFL. Gibbs is, however, still a talented back, especially as a receiving threat. In PPR leagues, he is clearly my RB2, but he will never rival the TD production of Austin Ekeler.
And I feel like he'd a be strong 1.1 most years.

After finally catching up on everything this weekend (was working the Albuquerque fiery food & BBQ) I am leaning a little harder towards JSN at 1.04 after taking Bijan and two quarterbacks.
There are likely running backs at eight, 10, and 13 who I really like as well.
Still have to see, landing spot to know for sure. If Gibbs goes to a jackpot situation, that will change the calculus a bit.

You just don't see many RB1's sub 200lbs.

You don't feel it's a bit much pushing the sub 200 pound narrative when he's 199? Does it really make a difference if he was 202? The top two RB's in fantasy last year were Ekeler, who his size is similar and CMC who outweighed him by a whopping 6 pounds, but on a larger frame with a lower BMI.
Now you might say, well those two are sturdier, make better goal line runners. Both CMC and Ekeler each had exactly 12 carries inside the 5 yard line. Ekeler had 6 TD's and CMC had 5. If you pulled those points out Ekeler and would have been RB2 and CMC RB 4. If you went back 10 yards CMC only had one more TD, 4 more for Ekeler, both again top 5 RB's. Not that Gibbs won't be getting the rock inside the 5 or 10. We just saw McKinnon catch 8 TD's inside the 5 .
Meanwhile if you want to look at JSN's odds are pretty strong he's a 4.5+ 40 guy, probably 4.55+ who is also under 200 pounds. You don't see many with that combo of size and speed working out awesome for fantasy. By my count one was a WR1 last year, ASB.
I'm not trying to turn this into a JSN discussion. He looks like a strong third pick. But the focusing on 199 and pushing the sub 200 pound barrier which allows us to ignore the plethora of RB's within 5-10 pounds kind of blows my mind. Especially when it's on a 5'9" frame and his BMI is in the range most seek.

I'd rather someone else take that punt and me take the inevitable haul they'd offer for a guy who clearly does have a high ceiling.

Physically, there are some similarities, but Gibbs never rushed for 1,000 yards or double digit TDs in a season. Charles capped off his career at Texas with a junior season of 1,619 yards rushing and 18 rushing TDs in only 13 games. Gibbs, on the other hand, has been the more prolific receiver.

Gibbs is a rich man’s James Cook/ Pollard. I think he’s a hybrid player who is one of the most explosive offensive threats to come into the league but will be mostly misunderstood as a running back and not able to be maximized easily. The team that drafts him is likely going to value him as such. But prototypes exist for a reason. Who’s punching it in from the 1? Probably not Gibbs. Guys like Eckler are outliers. Charb is a safer pick but Gibbs could be special. 1.02 is an adventure this year.

I'm nitpicking, but a rich man's Pollard is CMC. Pollard is arguably a top-5 NFL RB. If Gibbs is as good as Pollard that would be an accomplishment, let alone better.
I've got Gibbs as the 1.2 right now. Despite them re-signing all their RBs, I still keep looking at Miami in round 2 as a great fit. Could also see maybe TB or the Rams in round 2.

We have very different valuations of Pollard as an NFL Running back.
I would guess so. I thought Pollard should have been starting for Dallas 3 years ago, and that the list of better NFL RBs can be counted on 1 hand.
I do like Gibbs. I think he's a much better prospect than James Cook was, I just think Pollard has always been drastically underrated, and is entering the Austin Ekeler portion of his career when the Chargers finally realized he was better than Gordon, which also was multiple years later than they should have.
