Releasing last years leading rusher and later an elite pass pro 3rd down RB with a year remaining on his rookie deal and then investing a first round pick on the best OT prospect of the last 8 drafts...what else can that possible mean except they’re about to hand the RB1 reigns over to a journeyman with $1M guaranteed salary for the next two years? We’re talking about a 4-yr vet who never surpassed his rookie year career highs of 565 rushing, 818 YFS, and 6 TDs.

Can’t believe anyone still thinks an elusive back who put up 878-10 in 13G with 5.5 YPT while playing 38% of the snaps is going to ascend to RB1 this year. He was RB18 overall last year and averaged 17.62 (top eight) his last 5 games; you don’t come to the logical conclusion his age 22 season will be a regression?

If anyone thinks Swift is going to be used like Dalvin Cook, they are just wrong. That’s just not how many coaches use their backfields. I would expect something that averages to Williams getting 12 carries, 2 receptions a game and Swift getting 11 carries and 5 receptions a game.

Yeah, I agree with your sarcasm. Maybe quoted the wrong thing. I think the Jamaal is the man stuff is way overblown, but do think he’ll be given a chance to continue to show what he’s been.

Sorry bruh, I misunderstood what you meant.

Oh, yeah - Jamaal is a capable guy, no doubt. He does a lot of things well, none of which he's great at, but he's a really good complementarian back. He is a decent runner, won't take it to the house but he's a effective. Ditto in the passing game - he's a good pass catcher and effective blocker - though I doubt he's an upgrade from Kerryon in the latter since Johnson has been top 5 the last few seasons. If injuries hit, which is inevitable over an 18 week season, he can be the next man up and have a 20 touch game or two. Saw it just last year, I spot started him in the flex a couple times with Jones out and he scored like 37 points those two weeks. He has a role. The contract is super team friendly, the only thing guaranteed is the $1.25M bonus over two years, $1M this year, and $1M next year. No brainer to sign him for a cap hit of $1.625 in 2021.

But Swift is probably the best playmaker on the team, and this league is about splash plays. He's bigger than Williams and way more elusive, like they're not even in the same conversation when it comes to juking a defender. As for goal line work last year:

Williams inside ten: 12-23-1
Swift inside ten: 17-45-8
Aaron Jones: 20-51-6
ADP: 19-33-7

Williams inside five: 5-(-1)-1
Swift inside five: 9-13-6
Aaron Jones: 9-12-4
ADP: 12-8-5

That's nice the OC thinks Williams is an A back and Swift is a B back. Pump up his confidence, motivate the starter, whatever. The tape and the stats say Swift is a better A back and a better B back.

(in Lynn's terminology, A back is the inside workhorse and the B is the change of pace outside guy who catches passes)

I definitely think they view Swift as their playmaker and will move him around and especially try to get him mismatches in the passing game but I expect a lot of Williams grinding the rock between the tackles.

Could be, although the ability to control games running the ball is not looking promising and probably makes Swift the more valuable component.

Yeah, I’m definitely not saying Williams is going to be “the guy” over Swift. That’s silly. But being a huge Aaron Jones fan the last couple years and watching him play, I learned to appreciate Jamaal Williams as well. He’s not flashy, or overly dynamic. But he’s tough, and he’s a damn good pass catcher. He does the little things well, and he does everything at least decent. I love Swift. I think he’s a phenomenal talent. I had him in two redraft leagues last year, and he was huge for me down the stretch. I think if KC had taken him instead of CEH, we’d be having a different conversation right now about him being the overall number 1 dynasty RB. But I hate his situation. Jared Goff is a downgrade. Their WR’s are atrocious. That, coupled with just the general Lions buffoonery of mishandling some of their best players over the years makes me very apprehensive about Swift being able to overcome all these odds and deliver the numbers he would be able to on a different team. I’d be buying Jamaal in dynasty, and probably paying a little more than market value if I was the Swift owner. 

 
Williams will not cut into Swifts yards, but he will cut into his TDs.  Williams is a good handcuff and a good bye week replacement.  Will reliably catch some balls and get a handful of carries while scoring 5-7 TDs.  Swift will not have double digit TDs.

Mind boggling if it happens. Just straight idiocy from the Lions but what else should we expect.

 
Both Lions RBs were Top 5 in all my PPR & half leagues

i only started Swift in my main league - swapped him out of RB2 on the news at 12:30, and put him back in at 12:35 after thinking about it. Kept him on the bench in another league where he’s my RB3.

Did not start him Jamaal in either league I have him. Never thought about it either. Absent an injury I don’t feel confident about his utilization, whereas with Swift it doesn’t feel like that will ever be an issue.

Swift out snapped Williams 2 to 1 and Swift was somewhat eased back into service. That said with the lack of downfield options at WR both backs will be necessary parts of the passing game as well.

49ers chose to lay off and Goff took what they gave him - 16 of his first 18 completions were to TEs or RBs, only 206 yards in his first 39 PA. He and Campbell talked about how that’s not good enough - they have to force the ball downfield more.

not sure what we saw yesterday will be the weekly script.

May want to throw it downfield but can they? What happened yesterday is what was going on for training camp and preseason.

Amen but preaching to the choir. Since OTAs, could write the story before practice or scrimmage or game.

Goff continues to struggle, especially on downfield throws. Won’t throw into a tight window except to Hock. But the RBs are both uncoverable. Day after day after day.

Just saying if the HC and QB are both saying that has to change, I’m inclined to believe they won’t stick with the game plan that had them down 31-10 at the half.

 
Given the comments from Campbell regarding Swift, I foresee a downgrade upcoming, maybe?

In my full PPR league, he's RB 11 going into this week. Sadly, he's scored all of those points on my bench which is kind of a bummer. Bench MVP. 

Carries are up week by week (9/7/12). Snap % is up. (35/39/49). Targets down (9/3/2). Haven't watched the games to see what his situational usage is. Is he the primary goal line back? 

Flexing him this week I think. Is it time to salvage value or just hold on? Swift is always a Q but Campbell seems to think he's "getting better week by week" I need to open up a bench spot so thinking of packaging him to an RB needy team in a twofer to upgrade a WR a little?

How are people viewing him as a season long asset in redraft/ PPR?

A stable RB2/flex in all formats, not sure how much better he will be if Swift goes down. Swift's a major reason they stay on the field right now with TOP and moving the chains... I know that RB's generally don't matter, but for this team, Swift certainly does...

Team's so devoid of talent at the WR level...

 
Jamaal Williams rushed 14 times for 66 yards in the Lions' Week 4 loss to the Bears.

Williams was not targeted in the game, while D'Andre Swift saw six targets. Williams ran hard in this game, but a two-down role on the Lions is not likely to lead to reliable fantasy value. Williams will be a TD or bust option against the Vikings in Week 5. That TD is a risky bet, because Williams is losing some goal line work to Swift.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Lions OC Anthony Lynn said he wished he would have gone to Jamaal Williams in a few more situations during Week 4 after watching the film.

It's a scary-sounding quote for D'Andre Swift stakeholders, but it probably doesn't change much in the short-term. The floor for both Lions backs is low, as you saw from Swift (eight carries, 16 yards, but four catches for 33 yards) in Week 4 and Williams (seven carries, 25 yards) in Week 2. With the Vikings allowing 4.8 yards per carry, this week's matchup qualifies as quite tasty for both backs, but it's possible that the hot hand keeps one of them from enjoying quite as much of it.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Jamaal Williams (hip, illness) is expected to play in Week 6 against the Bengals.

Williams didn't practice until Friday but should play his normal role versus the Bengals. He's averaging 11 carries and three catches per game with the caveat that his receiving numbers are skewed by an eight-catch outing in Week 1. Williams has earned double-digit carries in three consecutive weeks. That volume should make him good for FLEX-worthy numbers this week.

Anyone holding tight in 12 team lPPR eagues?

May drop for J. Patterson, D. Freeman, or R. Penny.

He WAS flex worthy early on. Now he's a guy in a cruddy offense. 

Don't see upside unless Swift gets hurt. And there are backups in better offenses where you have the same odds of winning the lottery.

 
Their two best lineman - LT Taylor Decker and Pro Bowl C Frank Ragnow - are out for the year. Every skill player besides Hock & Swift is a trash bag. Goff averaged 7.2 YPC v the Bengals. Remove the rookie class and he’s the worst QB in the league by QBR.

Cut the cord. It ain’t getting any  better this year.

 
This ones tough. It has been hard to drop him because he was getting opportunity and went off early in the season. However, he eats up a bench spot that could have been used on Herbert / Darrel Williams / Alex Collins type players.

Not sure if he is flexworthy anymore as-is and not sure if he's the ideal upside play now. Definitely droppable, but you wonder what kind of points he'd put up if he gets all the opportunities in the future.

He got a lot of great press early in the season, but now in hindsight it feels like those performances were fluky and now we've settled into a very mediocre reality.

He may have to go.

 
I think it's the same as in past years with Jamaal. A solid NFL RB that does just about everything reasonably well that an RB needs to do, and coaches and teammates love him for it. But from a fantasy standpoint, you can do a lot better. 

 
Jamaal Williams (thigh) didn't practice for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Williams' thigh injury popped up on the report on the Thursday before Week 8, and he has not practiced or played since. Even after a bye week. This is starting to get concerning. Godwin Igwebuike and Jermar Jefferson mixed in during Week 8's blowout for the Lions, but it was 17-0 before either of them got a touch. D'Andre Swift might be capturing another high rate of the RB touches against the Steelers in Week 10.

It's a terrible sign that Williams failed to log a single practice after receiving extensive rest through Detroit's bye. D'Andre Swift notably out-touched Jermar Jefferson and Godwin Igwebuike 17-5 until the Eagles took a 38-0 fourth-quarter lead in Week 8, cementing Swift in the exact same (juicy) spot as long as the Lions keep competitive. He's considered a low-end RB1 opposite Pittsburgh's front-seven.

D’Andre Swift was elevated to playing nearly every snap with Williams out last week. He turned that role into 33 carries for 130 yards plus three additional receptions. With Williams back in the lineup, he’ll return to playing somewhere between 60 and 75 percent of the snaps. Before going down, Williams was earning over a dozen touches for roughly 60 yards per game. He’ll be a risky RB3/4 bet this week.

Jamaal Williams rushed 15 times for 65 yards in the Lions' Week 12 loss to the Bears, adding five receptions for 18 additional yards. 

The 20 touches were a new season high for a player who just returned from a lengthy thigh injury in Week 11. Williams was already out-carrying D'Andre Swift when the sophomore runner went down with a shoulder issue late in the second quarter, but Swift's injury is the reason Williams' Thanksgiving workload was so bountiful. Swift has 10 days to get cleared for Week 13 against the Vikings, but it is quite possible, if not probable, he sits. If that is the case, Williams will be a low-end RB2 as some combination of Jermar Jefferson and Godwin Igwebuike changes the pace.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Jamaal Williams "is prepared to carry the load" in Week 13 against the Vikings.

Campbell added that the team would also use Godwin Igwebuike and Jermar Jefferson. Igwebuike saw a carry and a target after D'Andre Swift went down with a shoulder issue in Week 12. Swift is not expected to play this week, elevating Williams to a considerable role. Igwebuike will back him up but Campbell's comments paint Williams as a potential workhorse until Swift returns. Williams will step into high-end RB2 volume once Swift is officially ruled out. He turned 20 touches into 83 yards last week.

Lions placed RB Jamaal Williams on the reserve/COVID list.

Oof. With D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and Williams both out against the Broncos, Detroit will lean on the machination of Godwin Igwebuike, Jermar Jefferson, and Craig Reynolds, the latter who is currently on the team's practice squad. Igwebuike is the pivot for fantasy since he was treated as the Lions' receiving back in Week 13, running 26 routes to Williams' nine.
