RB Joe Mixon, HOU (2 Viewers)

He won't get drafted by a big market team. Plain and simple. The size of the market is what matters to the NFL. The last thing the NFL wants is the Mixon video getting played over and over again post draft, in the preseason and at the start of the season in NYC, Boston, Philly, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, LA.
Makes absolutely no difference. This video will get played for a few days after the draft,...in APRIL, there will be a few protesters before their first game, and everyone will be cheering when he breaks off his first long run.

I think you're actually painting a worse picture than it will be. I would be shocked if there were any protesters at all. Were there any protesters in MIN or BAL with Rice and Peterson with their PR nightmares? This is not as egregious IMO

Rice was released. If they kept him, I feel safe in saying there would have been protestors.

I just don't see it... maybe I'm wrong. Football goers are typically not the type of people who would stand outside of a stadium with signs and boycotting a team. And those who would do that probably don't pay attention to football either.

People attend/watch sporting events for entertainment. We don't see protests when a guy is busted with drugs. In Baltimore Ray Lewis is cheered as if he were a god and he killed a guy for cryin out loud. If those same fans would boycott or protest because one of their players knocked his girlfriend out cold in an elevator I'd be surprised. He was punished, served that punishment... what more do they want the team to do? I guess releasing him was the best option they could do, but again I point to Ray Lewis... can't get much worse than killing someone. Not to start a different debate here. Again, it'd be nice to keep the PR debate to a minimum here as it's been discussed so crazy.

I just don't really see it being a big issue come August for whoever drafts Mixon.

It wouldn't be the "football goers" - there would be organized woman's groups picketing outside the stadium. I'm not saying it will happen here - but the Rice video was very public. It was on all the morning news shows, etc.

I guess, but at the end of the day does anyone care? These are likely not people who spend money on football anyways. These are the same people who would look at football and MMA with their nose in the air. Again, maybe I'm wrong and maybe there would be a day or an hour or two of protests and then they'd move on to the next "cause." I don't think it really matters either way because whoever drafts Mixon likely won't see any loss in revenue as a result, unless he does it again.

I agree on Mixon. His "story" is no mainstream. It will go away quickly after the draft and only get a few mentions during training camp.

There were animal rights protestors for Mike Vick at both home and road games.  Even Steelers fans had some pretty big protests when they signed him in the twilight of his career and people barely cared who he was anymore.

The bottom line is NO team is gonna be dissuaded from taking him because they are worried about a few women's group protesters. Only teams that have owners who veto him will stay away.

Those protest types care more about animals than people.

I am very much hoping for this. If he slips to them round 3 I think they would take him but I don't think he slips that far. I'm not even sure he slips to them round 2... I would LOVE for them to grab him round 2.
If they want him, it's gonna cost them a 1st. He doesn't even sniff getting to them in the second.

"Joe Mixon's head-turning Pro Day earlier this month could lead to a big payday at the NFL Draft according to ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr.

Kiper Jr. didn't include Mixon in his latest mock draft 3.0 first round on Wednesday, but did say Oklahoma's star ballcarrier could come off the board to the "Packers or Steelers" before Round 2 begins.

"If you don’t take him there, you probably won’t get him late in the second," Kiper said during Wednesday's appearance on ESPN's Mike and Mike. "All it takes is one owner to sign off on him. No shot he drops (to third or fourth round)."

When did those happen? See how forgetful those protest were? Everyone has moved back into their smartphone. Man, if any word didn't fit, it's that one.

Those women don't watch football, and they wouldn't care what an athlete did. In their mind, all athletes do this.

This is where I stand. I am obviously extremely happy to see the Packers in there.

Steelers almost make way too much sense. Big Ben/women jokes aside, it gives them insurance against Bell leaving. And maybe they don't want to keep Bell around for a big payday. He can sit for a year and by the time he starts any grief is long past gone. Thing is, to commit a first round pick to him means that they likely will move on from Bell. I'm not sure if that's the case

They will turn out for the 1st round of protests and then lose interest...like everyone else. You do a little PR at the start. 'Everyone deserves a 2nd chance...except K-Stink   '. 'He's doing great volunerre work...blah blah blah.' You pop the protesters bubble, they disappear. It's USA circa 2017. Attention spans are measured in minutes at best.

As a Bell owner, I draft him as insurance and possibly taking over. Would rather have him in OAK though.

Too bad I can only like this once. You hit it 100% on the head.

Big Ben raped a woman... allegedly... and we didn't see Heinz Field burned to the ground. I highly doubt then-18-year-old Joe Mixon is going to turn the NFL upside down for what he did years ago

Uhm, OK......  The whole quote that started all this was that there would be a few protesters for a week and then people would move on.  You disagreed, and now are arguing that.....there will be a few protesters for a week and then people will move on?  So you've settled on the exact same stance that you started out arguing against and are patting yourselves on the back as if you thought it up?

Weird.  Really, really weird.

Not sure what you are talking about. I have always had the stance that protesters move on rather quickly and even moreso with the invention of the smartphone. Sure it will be brought up from time to time going forward but each time less people will pay attention unless he screws up again.

As far as this part of the statement: You do a little PR at the start. 'Everyone deserves a 2nd chance...except K-Stink   '. 'He's doing great volunteer work...blah blah blah.' You pop the protesters bubble, they disappear. It was all in reference towards the teams PR department and Mixon. The reference to K-stink was simply that he's really a bum and doesn't even deserve a 2nd chance because ...well...he sucks.

BTW, 1/2 the protesters (conservatively) could care less about those involved and are simply interested in hanging out in the crowd and some are simply hoping something good happens...to themselves while they are there.

He'd fit in nice with what the Eagles have added on offense.
I can't tell you how much I want this to happen.
The problem with Philly is I think they will have to trade up in round 2 or back into round 1 to get him. He might slip to them round 2, but that's a big might. I highly doubt it. That would be an absolute steal if they were able to land him round 2. Might as well call it 2 first round picks TBH. I don't see him falling past CIN/BUF/NO round 2. PHI could always trade up with a team like SF however, who I believe is looking to trade down to acquire more picks.

14 is too high to take him, but it only takes 1 team to fall in love with a player. In 3 years we could be looking back and saying how Mixon was totally worth it at #5 much less #14.

I think teams with the best shot at grabbing him without overreaching are in the bottom 10 or so of the 1st round and top 10 of the second round. But like I said above, 14 might not really be all that much of a reach

Overall I think the RB's fall. One of the big 3 will make it to round 2 and I think Mixon goes in round 3 IMO

I could see him falling to the mid-second (even without the controversy) or even later, only because RBs tend to fall a bit and I could see teams preferring Fournette, Cook and/or McCaffery over him.

Without the controversy, he is likely the 1st RB off the board in the NFL draft or it's a tossup between him and Fournette.  228 lb RBs who run 4.43-4.50, can run between the tackles with power, have the speed to get outside, and have a demonstrated ability to catch and run routs (w/ 10.25 inch hands) do not grow on trees.  He is the prototypical every down NFL RB that every team wants. Some team is going to get a bargain at the back end of the first round or early second.

This time next year he will be a top 4 dynasty PPR RB, barring injury.

He's my second favorite RB in the draft - but I can't speak to how every NFL GM/scout sees it.

Green Bay would obviously be ideal.  Probably a top 2 pick in the rookie draft for most people if that happens.

There have been lots of mumblings about Detroit the whole time.

One I haven't heard mentioned is Cleveland in the 2nd.  Some mocks have them taking Fournette at 12 so why not a RB that may be just as good at 52 instead?

Whoa there Nelly. There's a argument that NO running back should ever be taken that high. Due to career length and how replaceable they are. To be saying that Mixon should've been taken at 5th overall means he's essentially a Hall of Fame running back.

Silly.  Ask DAL about it.  Ask PIT and ARI if they would trade either of their guys now, after X years of wear and tear, for a top 5 pick, let alone for them as rookies on 4 year cheap deals.  Hell ask any team if they could redo the 2013 and 2015 drafts if they would take them top 5.

I got to disagree on labeling his post silly. He had said there was an argument that no RB should ever taken that high  the surface of his post is actually true because people are still arguing if Dallas would have been better off taking Ramsey.  He also added that to be taken that high you better be a Hall of Fame RB and I think that's pretty true or at worse you need to perform as a HOF RB during your rookie contract or the pick is likely a regrettable one.  I think just because two teams hit on RB's currently playing at a HOF level later in the draft does not change any of this and his main point, if you take a RB that high he can't simply be good, he's got to be great.

The contract situation is huge. You lock up most positions on a 4-5 year rookie deal you are saving tons of cap room versus what the going market is for players at the top of their position. You take a RB that high he walks in as one of the highest paid RB's in the league, like Elliot.

Agreed. It's almost always non productive to call an idea you disagree with silly. If you disagree, disagree and say clearly why. Trying to make the other guy's idea look bad is prtty much guaranteed to cause the discussion to go downhill.

If you only got to see the future of one player and they were successful then yes every team would take that player, regardless of position. There's a 100% success rate.

If you got to see every players career then I don't think a RB goes in the top 5 unless it's a HoF type of career. Which is kind of my point. If you think Mixon is a top 5 player from this draft that he has to massively outperform not just every other player at his position but also be more impactful than every of player, regardless of position.

My point was that some players end up worth it.  You said no players are worth it.  To arbitrarily dismiss all of the position is just <whatever word I'm allowed to use>.

Just because Ramsey would also have been worth a top 5 pick doesn't mean Elliott wasn't.  The two aren't mutually exclusive.  Dak Prescott would have been worth it too, and if someone had said no QB's drafted since Luck were worth top 5 picks I would get in on that discussion too.

I agree with you. I picked a number out of the sky, 5 was obviously too high.

What I meant to say was when you look back at drafts 2-3 years later and do a "redraft" there are guys that were drafted at the end of round 1 or mid that we would say at the time "wow they really reached on that guy" but then 2-3 years later we would say, "he should have been the 1.01!!"

That was my point. Yes, 5 is very high and would be a lot to sell the farm for. Many RBs don't go that high unless they are extreme talents. I'm not saying Mixon is. I am just saying if Philly were to take him at 14, I would consider that very high especially considering the other talent at RB this year. he may very well emerge as the top RB (who knows!) and as a result we might say, wow how did so many teams pass on him- for one character incident.

Randy Moss, good example. A lot of teams passed on him and he fell far in the draft. GB passed on him I believe. Years later teams play the "what if we didn't pass" game. It happens all the time. That was only my point. I do not believe Mixon should go in the top half of round 1, or even bottom half really. I think people have given some valid points to why he might fall or why he won't. He's an intriguing player to watch and I think it'll be a draft "story" I will keep my eye on to some degree while the draft is going on (I don't watch it, what a waste, I will follow online/phone).

Gotchya. I got hung up on the Top 5 thing, my bad. True enough point. What kind of response do you think the crowds gives if he's picked if it's Philly in the first?

Bold:

I "watch" the draft but it's mostly just an excuse to get together with a few buddies, BBQ, have a couple beers and talk about football. [/spoilers]

ESPN's Herm Edwards says he wouldn't draft Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon if he were still in the NFL.

Edwards said doing so would make it hard time to address his team and look at his daughters. Which is fair enough. But it's one thing to say so from the safety of a broadcasting stage, and quite another to be seeking competitive advantages at every turn as a sitting NFL head coach. Mixon, sordid past and all, is gaining steam as the pre-Draft process rolls along.

I can respect his opinion. It's very grey area to allow your personal thoughts on something/someone affect your professional decisions. Especially at the NFL level.

Let's say the greatest quarterback prospect to ever come out of college was there at your pick, but he at one time said something pretty bad about Mexicans. Your in-laws happen to be Mexican so you take great offense and pass on him?

Herm Edwards has had no problem working with alleged murderer for the last 3 years on ESPN

There is a great difference between  "alleged", and "tried and convicted".  Mixon, in essence, is the latter.
