RB Kareem Hunt, KC (4 Viewers)

This is Hunt’s backfield.

Says the last 5 weeks.
The last 5 weeks he's been mediocre at best and not shown himself to be better than Pacheco at anything other than maybe GL work?

Pacheco gets through the hole faster, Pacheco is a better receiver, Pacheco is a better pass blocker. Maybe those things weren't always the case, but they sure are in 2024. Hunt is no longer a quality passing game option, offers no big play ability, and basically just gets what is blocked. One can argue the latter is true of Pacheco as well, but there is a very good reason why Pacheco was the clear cur starter coming into the season, and Hunt was unemployed.

Hunt now has 84 carries without a run over 15 yards, despite an elite run blocking OL. He's literally the least explosive RB in the NFL. He's had 12 runs over 15 yards since 2021, meanwhile Pacheco (who had zero the first 2 games admittedly) had 13 last season, he's clearly the more explosive option.

Hunt has declined a lot since his peak, he's 100% living on volume and TDs. He's not playing well NFL-wise at all. He's been under 4.0 YPC every season since 2021, including this season. His rate stats are very similar to "washed" guys like Ezekiel Elliott and Jamaal Williams, he's just on a much more functional offense, where he's being fed. He's also been getting worse by the week.

When Pacheco is back, I fully expect him to get 60% of the carries, and all of the pass catching. I can see Hunt being a closer, and possibly getting short yardage, maybe it becomes sort of an Achane/Mostert (2024 version) split.

....I read pretty-much valid info there @travdogg, interesting post. Your bolded text is where I think our preferences regarding Hunt differ. I value the volume & TD's Hunt will gladly grind out until Reid gives him a break for a few plays.

Prime Kareem Hunt >>> Isiah Pacheco

Fresh-legs 29-yr-old Hunt > Pacheco

Worn-down 29-yr-old Hunt <?< Pacheco

Hunt's YPC each game this season below. He better reverse this trend or this backfield will be returned to Pacheco as soon as the latter is ready to take it back...

Wk 5 NO 3.78

Looks like old man Hunt may be hitting a wall. Better than hitting other things.

Pretty sure Hunt has obliterated every expectation of his detractors. Accordingly, while his snap share ranks 22nd, his opportunity share of nearly 75% is 8th in the NFL. That clear tendency may have a lot to do with his YPC rate declining. But they've since added DeAndre Hopkins. Worst case neutral, but if he factors, what could that mean?

Not saying he's worthless, I'm saying his current workload is unsustainable, and a better RB is only a few weeks away. Hunt is a solid RB2 right now, but that's tenuous. I would be selling him anywhere I had him, and there have been some wild Hunt trades lately. For example I've seen:

Hunt for Nabers
Hunt/Flowers/Love for Taylor/Tua
Hunt/Kyler for Daniels
Hunt for DeVonta Smith
Hunt for Harrison

I'd rather be on the non-Hunt side of all of those deals (the top one is ludicrous to me, but there are bad traders aplenty)

Completely agree here, buying high would seem risky. Although, on top of the addition of a top WR, we're hearing Pacheco won't even be returning to the practice field for several more weeks? I'm someone who moved James Cook for Jayden Daniels & draft capital. So Hunt has helped me a lot!

of course its tenuous. Hes an injury filler. which is why Reid will run him into the ground. Hes not worried about saving him for the playoffs. Pacheco will be the guy for the playoffs. Hunt is a RB2 with some RB1 upside if game script and/or matchup allows.

and honestly, that is good enough for me (for now at least)

I traded Hunt for Pickens after losing Aiyuk/Godwin

Found this interesting…

From another forum:
Poster: St. Stephen

“According to the Inside Injury guys at The Athletic, with this injury it typically takes "5-6 weeks of ramp up time" after starting to initially practice on the injury...they don't consider speed walking on the treadmill actually starting to ramp up...take it for what it's worth, but they are usually pretty accurate--if not maybe conservative. There is also the added matter of the ankle ligament stuff for Pacheco. I have more Pacheco stashes on IR then I do active Hunt shares...I just tend to be pragmatic when it comes to injury optimism. Hunt has already paid off in spades and I think that continues for a solid stretch yet.”

Hmmm…

How do you know Pacheco will be the same .. Tony Pollard with the same injury and had an entire off season to rehab and looked marketably slower the following year and we expect Pacheco to be his usual self after only 2 months out of football?

I always thought it was basically Hunts job all fantasy season. It’s not realistic to think Pacheco was just gonna jump on the field and carry the load right away.
Sure they just want him straight in late Dec and Jan.

well, we shall see. you may be right.

you guys both make a fair point. I should think more about this before I yap. though each injury is unique but I am gonna look into the details of this. if it is the exact same as pollards, it did take him quite some time to get to full speed.

Possibly returning to practice in 2-3 weeks. Factor in a ramp up period, could be back by fantasy playoffs at which point he will likely make this backfield useless. Pacheco owners getting excited about his return are making a grave mistake. Hunt owners take notice. Get your contingency plans in order now. I am a seeker of truth, not being right so I post what I find.

Still a beast
I'll admit it, when Otten scored & my opponent went ahead I knew it was over! A night's sleep instantly became way more valuable. Was shocked to learn that he scored the game-winner for them & me. Those 1st half looks he was getting were absolute junk!! Perine was getting better looks than he was. Any number of 1st down, run-set carries with no misdirection. Or, Mahomes in that semi-gun, Hunt just standing there flat-footed while their faking the fake. Those went NOWHERE!

In the 2nd half Mahomes is under center, Hunt is set deep & they bring him. He is still a load to get to the ground. He also had carries when Tampa was defending pass. Way better looks in the 2nd half.

Source: The #Chiefs are bringing back veteran RB Kareem Hunt on a 1-year, $1.5M deal with incentives.

Dave Kluge
Kareem Hunt doesn’t have the burst and speed his did early in his career. But he was by far the best running back in Kansas City last year.

He’s patient and disciplined and never a liability. Don’t be surprised if he leads the backfield in touches next year.
