They just discussed this exact topic on NFL Network a little while ago, they had Mike Garafolo on the phone and he said that he "double confirmed" that Bell is still in the same stage and that his next suspension for either a failed or a missed test would also be 4 games, NOT 10 games.

 
Head coach stepped on field and impacted possible touchdown.  No penalty.

Assistant coach instigated fight that impacted playoff game.  No penalty.

Qb repeatedly accused of rape.  Given ten games.  Goodell reduces it to 4.

Wr repeatedly breaks substance abuse rules. 

Now bell, who was already in substance abuse program, successfully appeals to not only have his suspension reduced but also have this not count as a second strike against him.

Just a reminder that the pattern of behavior is the most important thing to Goodell.

As part of the settlement that reduced his four-game suspension to three games, Le'Veon Bell was kept in Stage 2 of the NFL's substance abuse program.

This is a quietly big deal for Bell in Dynasty leagues. His next violation would not cost him ten games or a full season, which would've been the case had Bell advanced to Stage 3 of the substance abuse program. Instead, any future failed or missed test would only result in another four-game suspension. Expect to see Bell resume going in the late first round of fantasy drafts. DeAngelo Williams will only open the season starting three games, not four

I'm not saying you're wrong... but the team I'm fairly confident you support hasn't exactly been model citizens.  I don't like either one of them.

Well, at least on that one, Goodell brought down the hammer.

 
The brady ship has sailed, and i'm not trying to draw any equivalence between the teams so much as the rulings.

Brady's serving a suspension that wasn't specified anywhere in the book and after appealing was told to #### off.  That's fine, it's the league's prerogative.  The team took the worst penalty in nfl history, also not actually listed in the book, but said hey, we will go along to get along.  Again, no favors or reductions.  In fact the league literally brought brady to court, not the other way around, to make sure he took his full punishment.  And that's fine - even if the penalty wasn't anywhere in the rulebook, the courts ultimately decided that the league had the right to punish as they see fit and the players should have negotiated better if they don't like it.  It is what it is. 

But during that process we heard repeatedly that the patriots were repeat offenders and the league came down harder on them because of the pattern of behavior.  Bear in mind that this was brady's first offense.

Here, the steelers have plenty of history of bad behavior, more recent than the patriots, including bell for whom this was not his first offense either.  Yet he's had both suspensions reduced and now they negotiated that he gets an extra chance too because this was a minor boo boo.

Did they do that for josh gordon and his minor offenses?

Goodell is a joke.

 
Sitting at 7 in a nonPPR, and seriously considering taking him at that spot. 

Silly? I mean... the #1 player, sitting there... 3 games missed. ugh

 
So am I getting this right:

1) Bell misses a drug test, he is suspended 4 games, goes to the next phase in the program, phase 3

2) He appeals, claiming they called the worng number and that he had given them the new one

So far this seems very binary to me (if he gave the number to the right guy who didn't use it, he should not be suspended. If he did not, have a nice vacation, guy)

3) the outcome of appeals process is that he is still suspended, except only 3 games but it doesn't count?

Didn't the NFL release the info about the case in the wrong order?

 
Boston - This is easy.  Goodell's pattern is consistent.  His rulings are partially based on the nature of the violation and partially based on the response and remorse of those who violate the rules.  If a player breaks the rules he has to be a man and face the music.  He may not like the music, but he has to suck it up, face it, learn from the situation and improve his behavior.  If he does, then he finds himself in Goodell's favor and maybe a reduced sentence (and frankly he earns back some of the respect from society that he lost).  However, if a player/coach/organization repeatedly breaks the rules AND repeatedly acts like an entitled child or a narcissistic egomaniac with no intention of remorse then the hammer comes down hard.   ...Wicked hahd.

Bell appealed twice with different excuses and had his suspension reduced both times.  Does that pass your bar of "He may not like the music, but he has to suck it up, face it, learn from the situation and improve his behavior."?

Three days ago it was reported that the Steelers were confident his suspension would be overturned.  Does that pass your bar of "acts like an entitled child"? 

What did bell do better than josh gordon?

AND YET - after respecting the process and showing Goodell that he was changing his ways...

On July 25, 2016, Gordon was reinstated by the NFL. He can participate in training camp but will be suspended for the first 4 games.[26]

 
So Bell didn't drive (or find a way to get) into the city for a drug test after his knee surgery and he later slept through a 5:30am test - and since "didn't test" = "failed test" he gets nailed. OK.  If he was respectful and credible in his appeal when presenting this information then I can see suspension and reduction.    If credible then yes, that is facing the music like a man and presenting your case like an adult.  Not repeatedly acting like a pompous and defiant baby.

As far as weight of discipline for repeated action you would do better comparing Gordon to Bryant.  No argument (though still not as drastic).

As for comparing any Steeler to Tommy boy, let's pay attention to James Harrison - his outspoken hatred and disrespect for Goodell along with his ego... that is a familiar script.   

 
So after all of the flat out denials that he ever missed a test, then the rumors about changing his cell phone number and the confidence that he'd be on the field week 1 it turns out he did actually miss 3 tests and none of them were due to a changed cell phone number?  He claimed he couldn't get to the first two tests in Dec. and Jan. because he just had surgery and the last one in April he fully admitted he slept through the test and that one was on him.  WTF?  He skipped 3 tests in a 5 month span and none of it was due to the testers calling the wrong number, he got off real light on this one IMO.

NFL ####ed out hardcore on this one. He committed a transgression (again) and they reduce the suspension AND he is still in phase 2 leaving him room to mess up again and only be suspended four games (which by precedent would be reduced). What a lolfest.

I don't want to get into an argument with a whiny Patriots fan so Ill just correct your inaccuracies:

1) Tomlin was fined.

2) The assistant coach, Joey Porter, was also fined.

3) Roethlisberger was never arrested nor charged with any crime yet still suspended 4 games.  The initial punishment was for 6 games (not 10) but was announced that it would be reduced 2 games if he complied with all programs requested by the league. He did and it was.

4) The WR was suspended 4 games last year and a minimum of one year for this season as mandated by the league's drug program.  Not sure what you're complaining about here.

5) The Bell situation was negotiated by the NFLPA, the union that backed Brady throughout the whole deflategate fiasco.  Since we don't know the details of this case it is hard for us to debate the fairness of the settlement.

Don't be ashamed that your team gets breaks from the league when they cheat.  Be ashamed of the league for their inconsistency.

He fell to me in the second round (drafted 4th overall), 21st overall paired with OBJ. Very pleased ? along with Mike Evans and Brandin Cooks in 3rd and 4th.

ya, no way either of those guys is there at 4.09.  Unless it was 3RR and he got them at 3.08 and 4.04 and it was a standard scoring with really bad drafters.

Running with a story publicly for weeks (months?) that the only reason he missed the test was due to a changed cell phone number, then coming back with this different story after the fact is respectful and credible?

I hate when people do this.  There are so many variables and different league configurations that it can be perfectly reasonable for both of those guys to be there at those slots.

 
Is Bell a free agent in2017?   I don't think he 'll be in Pittsburgh next year. Too many good rbs in draft next year. I would love to Jalen Hurd behind that line. Fournett and Chubb  will already be gone.

You don't let Bell's talent walk unless he fails 19 tests between now and next season.

Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey will also be drafted before Hurd.

Dalton maybe but McCaffery in not a physical back. And DeAngelo Williams  was at the right place at right time. Steelers will lose patience  with Bell not only suspensions but with injuries.

Local league. 8 teams lol. I've been in the same dynasty (20 teamer) since 2001. A lot of newbie picks went on lol ?

Bell is in his final year of his contract.  I think the Steelers will wait to see how this season plays out.  If he has a big year, stays healthy and out of trouble he could be franchised but I don't see the Steelers spending the kind of cash it would take to sign him to a long term contract.

It is more likely they use that cap space to extend Antonio Brown.
