RB Rhamondre Stevenson, NE (1 Viewer)

I think Stevenson is in for big year especially in PPR league.  I expect him to pick up a bulk of pass-catching role from James White (who is dealing with injury).  Beside, he's big back who excels as power back AND pass-catching back.
Rham is a stud. If he picks up the bulk of the pass catching role he has a real chance to be a top ten RB in PPR. Dude is a beast.

NBC's Peter King believes Rhamondre Stevenson will get the "bulk of the carries" for the Patriots this season.

King visited Patriots camp this week. King goes as far as to say Stevenson will be the "RB1" by mid-season. It's a bold proclamation, though King also acknowledges that since this is the Pats, no back is going to come out and gobble up something like 300 carries. Stevenson saw far more work than a typical rookie Patriots back in 2021 and has been raising eyebrows with his pass catching so far this summer. Damien Harris is in the final year of his rookie deal. The intrigue increases.

Everybody on my Rhamondre train...12 months later.  :coffee:

Sold my shares in the offseason and got off that train.  Used the picks I acquired to try again for a rookie RB who will help me this season. I don't see Stevenson's dynasty value increasing any time soon, and I don't really want any part of the Bellitricks.

I thought Stevenson showed quite well last year and I'm definitely on board with him this year. I think there is a not insignificant chance Harris is traded and even if he isn't I believe Stevenson sees a lot of work.

I agree that Stevenson should see more play this year. I highly doubt Harris gets traded. NE likes to use multiple backs. My one knock on Stevenson last year was his pass-pro wasn't always that great. But if he made improvements there (this pass catching work a possible indicator of that) I think he would have more fantasy value than Harris.

To further explain what has happened in camp so far, Stevenson, Harris, Montgomery, Strong, and Taylor have all had reps in the White role. As of the other day, Harris had about twice as many receptions in camp action compared to any of the other guys. A couple of beat guys have said Montgomery looked great in that role so far. Today they gave two-minute drill work to Stevenson. Unless and until one guy starts working with the ones exclusively and the other guys start working with the second unit, I doubt today carries much weight in the grand scheme of things.

Patriots starters finished practice with some 2 minute work.

Rhamondre Stevenson was repping in the James White role.
Well that sucks. I don't want another James White. I want the GL carries.
To me him playing the James White is pretty much whatever term you care to use for the opposite of sucks. If he's playing that role it's in addition to his other duties, not in place of and would only increase both his weekly floor and ceiling.

With McDaniels gone I would not expect to see the traditional James White role we are used to in New England. I expect a lot of regression to the offense across the board.

However, I could see this benefiting the running backs a bit as they may not rotate as much as they have in the past.

As I just posted above, there is no way to conclude anything right now. The tweet mentioned that RS played the White role IN A TWO MINUTE DRILL. It doesn't mean Stevenson is their third down back. They have been mixing and matching guys in situational game conditions. Generally speaking, backs out of the backfield have down well so far. Montgomery has been used out of the backfield, in motion, and out wide as a receiver.

What hasn't gone well in practice has been the transition to a zone blocking scheme. The line hasn't been able to do what it needs to do in order for the run game to be successful. It doesn't matter who the back on the field has been. The defense has been blowing up run plays behind the line. That also has impacted play action and Mac Jones' confidence in the offense.

Media reports on the offense have predominantly been negative. Whether that carries over into the season, who knows? Whether they stick with the more streamlined offense is also anyone's guess.

IMO, the Pats offensive player that is getting overlooked is Mac Jones. I think the rushing offense takes a step back, the defense takes a step back, and Jones out of necessity will have a noticeable uptick in passing attempts. Blend all that together, and I think the Pats will not be milking the clock with leads. They will need to pass more to stay in games (or have Jones throwing a lot at the end of games to get them back in the game). Given that NE has a lot of so-so receiving options, I don't really have a lot of faith in any individual WR or TE that will set the world on fire. If I had to pick one, it would be Bourne (he was far and away their most explosive player in the receiving game last year).

I can't remember the names right now but they were guests on a couple podcasts and they actually go to training camp and hang out and watch and talk to people. They said they would not be surprised if Harris was traded since he is in a contract year and typical for NE from office. They said RS is blowing him away in camp. Harris isn't bad it's just RS is better, especially considering the new schemes they are running. I'm all in Rhamondre redraft and dynasty.

Yes, posted same above. Its not that D. Harris isn't a good player, it's about how they view rbs and getting something for him before he leaves next year. If they believe in K. Harris there is decent chance they move D. Harris.

It would be foolish for the Pats to deal Harris...he is a quality RB but what is the return going to be? He is going to be an URFA after this year and while he would help any team, I don't see the return being anything worthy of moving on from him...if they dealt him and Stevenson got hurt it would be a huge step backwards for their offense as they would be relying on Strong, the other Harris and Montgomery...that would not be good...hopefully they just ride him out one more year and hope both Strong and the other Harris are ready to take on bigger roles next offseason.

This is far too rational. How does it boost the value of Stevenson and help my fantasy team? ;)

It is the Pats and RBs...it just cannot be as easy as White retires, they deal Harris and Stevenson turns into a top 10 RB...BB would never let that happen!

How many RBs will the Pats carry on their in-season roster? Certainly not 5. Who does that leave out?
They've carried 5 guys before. They would usually have one guy inactive on game day. At this point, Harris and Stevenson will obviously be active. Montgomery also plays special teams. I doubt they would risk putting Strong on the practice squad. Taylor would be a candidate to be active / inactive from week to week if they went with 5 guys. Rookie Harris seems destined for the practice squad. It depends where they want roster depth (and who else they want to try to hold on to). With White out of the picture, it doesn't look like they would have 5 RB on the main roster. Taylor could also be added to the practice squad.

Running Backs

An era of Patriots lore ended Thursday when James White announced his retirement. White had been hampered (and already placed on PUP) by a debilitating hip injury, so the team is at least prepared for life without him. They’ve added pass-game specialist Ty Montgomery to camp; he and holdover J.J. Taylor continue to split reserve snaps on passing downs. But Boston media seems convinced it’ll be Rhamondre Stevenson reaping most of White’s vacated pass-catching role. Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan points out that Stevenson “flashed soft hands” and “became the rare [Patriots] rookie running back to contribute right away” in 2021, and offseason reports on Stevenson were nothing short of glowing. It’s fair to salivate over the idea of the impressive size/speed prospect taking over three-down duties. But Stevenson’s value would shoot into the stratosphere if presumed starter Damien Harris were to be dealt away, as was pondered last week by SI.com’s Albert Breer. Harris is coming off a 15-touchdown season but feels expendable as an injury-prone prodder in such a deep, versatile backfield. Neither saw action in the preseason opener, so it doesn’t appear Harris is actively sitting on the trade block. But the Patriots are never passive, and it would surprise no one to see him follow the Sony Michel route out of town in a contract-year trade. The team used the opener to get a better look at its rookies, Pierre Strong Jr and Kevin Harris, and the results weren’t encouraging. Neither has dazzled in camp, and the pair combined to turn their 14 touches into just 32 yards against the Giants.

Most of my skepticism revolves around the risk of having young talent snatched off their practice squad. No doubt we will have a more clear picture over the next few weeks. Or not, because Pats.

My big $$ league is VERY TD heavy. GL backs like Blount were league winners.
If RS gets the GL carries, he'll be a top 10 back easily. Nobody runs inside the 5 more than the Patriots; for the last 9 years running.

Yeah I see a role similar to what Bolden had for Montgomery: primarily special teams but will also play RB in a pinch/certain plays. I agree with the rest of your post as well. Pats will most likely keep em all in some capacity. Gun to head if they had to cut one it'd probably be Strong... but that's purely speculation.

Phil Perry @PhilAPerry
Belichick on Rhamondre Stevenson:“Rhamondre has done a real good job improving his pass-game skills.” Emphasizes that he likes what he’s seen from Stevenson as a pass-protector in Year 2.

Beat guys mentioned RS had a couple of chunk plays as a receiver out of the backfield in joint practice with the Panthers today. But Montgomery was the one on the field for today’s two minute drill. Had one big gainer reception and another catch for a first down. Harris, Stevenson, and Montgomery all getting a lot of looks out of the backfield in camp so far. We can debate RS and his upside, but Montgomery at this point is free to pick up in most leagues.

Just to give everyone a broader perspective and a lay of the land, BB praised Ty Montgomery the other day (and the takeaway is most people feel he is a now lock for a roster spot and his role has been increasing from practice to practice). Bill did the same thing a couple of weeks ago, discussing Damien Harris at length in a presser. The point being, BB has turned over a new leaf and has been far more complimentary than ever before. Some of the beat guys cracked yesterday that Ty Montgomery, who has yet to play a down for NE in an actual game, got heaped with more praise in one press conference than Tom Brady got in his entire career in NE.

Both Stevenson and Montgomery have been taking snaps with the first team offense in camp in 3rd down and two-minute situations. But Harris still leads all RBs in terms of receptions in camp. On the rushing side of the spectrum, NE has been trying to switch up to a zone blocking scheme, which up until now has been an abject failure. It hasn't worked out at all . . . and it doesn't matter who the ball carrier has been. The OL hasn't blocked things well, the defense has been blowing up plays, and the backs have consistently been tackled for loss over and over again. And remember folks, this is the same defense that did not stop the Bills for even one series in the playoffs.

There is a chance they could move Harris, but this once again looks like a backfield with shared roles and responsibilities. In redraft leagues, DH and RS are going in the RB25-35 range. If both guys are on the roster and healthy (and with Montgomery in line to vulture receptions), there is a decent chance the RBBC approach will once again leave people disappointed.

Great post! Although, to be fair only the clock was capable of stopping the Bills offense in the playoffs.

I want to target him, but his stock is booming, where it stops nobody knows, but it’s rising fast. Bad timing for a rise.

Here is what I can make of the RB situation as the open portion of camp comes to an end. Harris still has been getting more work than Stevenson running the ball (Harris getting the first set of reps and RS sometimes with the ones and sometimes with the twos). Montgomery is getting the primary reps on third downs and two minute offense. Harris has been seeing more receptions than last year. Stevenson has been seeing a lot more passes than last year (with both the ones and the twos). Stevenson appears to be the back up to Montgomery in the James White role.

NE has tried installing a ZBS concept with little success. No back has done well with that, but Stevenson and Strong are better suited for that if they stick with it. More likely, they will stick with their interior running scheme and start adding some outside zone concepts once they can run it better in practice.

If ZBS is really the system of the future, Harris is not a great fit (which is why there is renewed chatter of trading him). For now, I can’t see how they can go ZBS full time when they struggle to get past the LOS running it.

Overall, it definitely looks like NE will look to pass to backs more than they did last year.

Will add that right now there is concern about the O line as they are not off to a great start.

That ties into the ZBS. They haven’t been able to move fast enough and the defense has been blowing up plays before they get a head of steam. They haven’t practiced their traditional run scheme, so hard to stake a claim one way or another whether the OL would be an issue there.

The pass protection has consistently gotten better throughout camp, and I don’t think that will be a big issue and may just need some tweaking. It’s the run blocking that has been the main issue.

Not exactly what I am hearing...Mac was sacked 5 times the other day...there are concerns that are more than system related (and that is a big concern as well).

I expect him to play very well, yet to have a maddeningly low # (8-12) of touches each week. Talent is there. We’ll see if the usage matches.

He averaged 15 touches a game over the second half of last season (with Harris out for 2 games in that stretch). A case could be made that NE won’t run the ball as much though. Still think he will be over your range.

Yeah, I expect him to hover around a dozen touches per game, +/- 3.

On this point it does really feel that when it came to replacing McDaniels, Belichick decided to jump off the cliff first and build his plane on the way down.

This team makes me nervous. I could see anywhere from placing 1st to 4th in the division.

I don't see how Buffalo doesn't end up 1st in the division. I've never seen anything from Ty Montgomery that makes me think he'll play a big role in passing downs.

It's a big stretch but never underestimate a BB defense. It's also a stretch to think the Pats finish below the Jets, but this particular offseason, coaching staff and roster has me very nervous about the Patriots from both an NFL and magic football perspective.
