RB Russell signed from the practice squad (1 Viewer)

Is this just rhetoric or is it possible he will be the goal line back? FBG doesn't even have him in their projections....... Any insight?

(Rotoworld) Steelers RB Gary Russell, slated to be the top backup to Mewelde Moore, could receive significant work Sunday.

Analysis: Said offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, "I wouldn't mind giving it to him 20 times a game. I've been waiting a couple years to see what he can really do." Keep in mind that doesn't guarantee Russell 20 carries this week, but he should be the goal-line back. Najeh Davenport will play only in an emergency.

Is Russel a FA at the end of this season?

Anyone Steeler homers have a scouting report on this guy? how is his speed, power, elusiveness? what kind of potential does he have?

Even with a 1 year contract, he would be an RFA as this is only his 2nd year in the league. You need 5 or more years experience to qualify for unrestricted free agency. Besides if any other team had really wanted him, they could have grabbed him off waivers a couple weeks ago when the Steelers cut him, or signed him off their practice squad before this past week. That is some pretty strong rhetoric from the OC. Mewelde Moore is not a goal-line or 20 carry back, so why not Russell.I haven't really seen Russell play since the Minnesota-days, which was what 3 years ago. He was the thunder to Maroney's lightning then. And I thought he was every bit as good.

So pull out your crystal ball. Enter Russell, he gets a chance and does well for the next couple of weeks. With Parker, Mendy and Moore does that leave Russel expendable and worth stashing?

Here's Arians' quote, in full context. Take it for what it's worth, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Russell split time with Moore and get the goal-line carries.

Tomlin said third-down back Mewelde Moore will be the starting running back against the Jaguars because of injuries to Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall and Carey Davis.

However, he also said "we're prepared to be running back by committee," then added, "you know the contributors."

That means Gary Russell, who was promoted this week from the practice squad, will be the top backup to Moore. Najeh Davenport, who was re-signed this week after being released in June, will probably play only in an emergency.

"Gary is a solid downhill runner," said offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. "It's just been a numbers game at times with him. I wouldn't mind giving it to him 20 times a game. I've been waiting a couple years to see what he can really do."

Parker is dinged again, Mendy is totally unproven, and Moore has a completely different skill set. If Russell does well the next couple weeks, there's no way he will be expendable. The Steelers will keep him stashed like they've been doing. They obviously need alot of depth. But this whole thing reeks a bit of coachspeak to me. I doubt Russell will be given many chances this week, maybe some goal-line ops but definitely not 20 carries. I think we'll see the Steelers running the no huddle, airing it out this week, and using Moore out of the backfield. After facing the blistering pass rushes of Philly and Baltimore, the Jags should be a nice change of pace. Their lack of a pass rush is their biggest weakness. Also, their secondary is a bit banged up, too (Nelson out, Mathis hurting).

If he does well, they won't be able to stash him like they have been, they'll need to roster him or he'll be signed by another team.If he's #4 on the team, that doesn't bode well for his production, but if he does well would it be completely shocking if Parker was sent out, and we're left with Mendenhall, Moore, and Russell?

Pittsburgh Steelers FB Carey Davis (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 3. He is listed as doubtful for the team's Week 5 game.

Fantasy Impact: Looks like the Steelers with go with Mewelde Moore and Najeh Davenport this week at running back.

They cut Davenport and kept Russell. The coaches have said Russell is the primary backup and Najeh is an 'emergency' option only.

Barring injury, that's probably correct. But if Russell is injured, don't you think that would change things?

They were rostering Russell up until 2 weeks ago. I meant stashing ON the roster. And, yes, it would be completely shocking if Parker was sent out. No way will that happen.

In Regard to Russell, what are his skills? is he a power runner? how shifty is he? has anyone actually watched him play?

A small scouting report would be greatly appreciated on how he has looked with the Steelers

North-South power runner, hits the hole, goalline skills.

Not sure about speed, wiggle or recieving skills.

Maybe a good comparison is Rudi Johnson.

Seems likie releasing him was a calculated risk maybe? They needed to make room for a DB last week and maybe they knew if they let him go for a day, they'd be able to get him back.

In my opinion, the biggest reason he probaly wasn't picked up is that his vision isn't exactly top shelf, nor is his burst. Neither is terrible, but they aren't exactly eye popping either.

On the plus side, he's a downhill, "take it and go" kind of guy. He will hit the hole hard if it's there. If it's not, he won't always be able to find that "alternative seam" like some backs can(product of the less than optimal vision, IMO) and he'll run up the back of his OLiners. Another plus: He was probably the best short yardage guy they had the past two pre-seasons, but never got an opportunity when games counted. Not sure why. I also have no idea how poor/advanced his peripheral skills are(blocking/etc.) If his blocking is subpar, that could have been the culprit for him not getting much PT in '07. This year, I think it was merely a numbers game. Too many runners ahead of him, and Tomlin was running Parker into the ground anyway.

I'm going to be interested to see if he becomes more of an option once Parker returns since they've made it pretty clear, prior to this week, that they want to keep Moore as the top option on 3rd downs and on returns. Davenport was cut to keep Russell earlier in the year, so I see Davenport as more of a disaster option/swingman a la Davis, since he can also play FB. Plus, he's good on STs. Guess we'll see.

Russell was pretty impressive in his short time at Minnesota. Though it is hard to judge since that was when Minny was a RB system machine. I think he's more suited to be a main ball carrier then Moore is though.

If you ask me, the Steelers missed out by not going out and getting a guy like Onterrio Smith. Team him up with Davenport and that's a heck of a 1-2 punch.

Moore is starting, he's the 3rd down back ans he's the kickoff returner. He's going need some breathers and I think Russell is going to be the guy, moreso than Davenport. I don't think that translates to anywhere near 20 carries though...

Odd that FBG still doesn't have him listed in the projections. I mean they have Benson listed. Anyone know if Russell will see touches today?
