RB Saquon Barkley, PHI (1 Viewer)

Penn State junior RB Saquon Barkley carried 17 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 56-44 victory against Nebraska.

Barkley's 9.3 yards per carry was his best average since the regular-season opener against Akron when he galloped for 12.3 yards per tote. He has piled up five rushing scores over the past two games, too after slowing down earlier during conference play. The junior is now over 1,000 rushing yards with 13 TDs on the ground, three receiving scores, two more in the return game and one passing tally.

At some point we're going to realize that each athlete is unique and the comparison game is just us desperately trying to predict the future by looking at the past/present.
It's actually a human need to control things. We want to compare what's in front of us to what has happened previously in an inane human need to control our understanding of things. We do it in every aspect of life (this band sounds like so and so, this movie is a lot like this movie, this food tastes like chicken).

No relevance. Just a weird human observation.

The compare game is necessary. Maybe not to the level of x to y but there is no way to predict without comparing, even if it’s established 40 Times etc.

A big factor to me is pedigree, especially in RBs. Gore, AP, Fournette etc all set the bar on their life running the ball. Every predictor is based on comparison of something.

Comparing players helps streamline thought. Familiar examples rather than dissertations. But before a comparison is made, better know what your talking about. AP compared to Dickerson might work but comparing Reggie Bush to Lagarrette Blount best have counter points.

Yes but in the end, these are all an entirely unique set of variables. If they happen to turn out similar to another player it doesn't mean that you can accurately predict that. Just like if they turn out completely different can you say the prediction was wrong. Each player is unique and has a unique set of circumstances.

But people don't typically want to compare but rather equate.

I understand the anti-equate idea but we really can’t fully predict anything. A baseline is needed.

Verbalizing that is where the comparisons go wrong.

FWIW, my comparison is a bit of Le’Veon Bell. Has that same patience, great feet and ankles, and short vision. Bigger body type like Bell, but not always running with power. Earlier in his career I thought he did that more, like a Marshawn Lynch. But not as much lately. May be more concerned with getting hurt than he was when he was 2-3 years away from the NFL.

What I think he adds to Bell is greater acceleration and long vision, which makes him look like Tomlinson a bit to me. Lots of long runs/catches well set up by speed and angles.

I don’t really see the Barry Sanders compare myself that much.

Of course, living up to these compares will be tough.

I’ve heard Portis before and I like that. I’m not sure Johnson was as quick or nimble. More of a plow people over type that had some nice wiggle and long speed. JMO.

Penn State junior RB Saquon Barkley carried the ball 16 times for 77 yards and two scores in a 66-3 destruction of Maryland on Saturday.

Barkley also hauled in his only target for four yards. This could have been a much bigger game if Maryland was even remotely competitive. They weren't. Both scores came in the third quarter, and they both came from a yard out. Barkley will likely get a chance to add to his impressive season totals in a high-profile game, assuming he decides to play.

There used to be a curse on Penn State RBs. Kijana Carter, Blair Thomas etc.
There always is a stigma on certain schools, and then there isn't.  USC WR's are bossing the league up right now.  JuJu, Robert Woods, Agholor all doing very well.

I’ve only watched the Ohio St game but color me extremely unimpressed.  I don’t really follow college football I just do my evals around this time but he looked very shaky during that game.  From his video on DB his QB did him few favors but he does not look like a sure fire 1.01 based solely on that game.  Obviously there’s been a lot of hype and maybe he just hasn’t lived up to it in my mind of what I was expecting (most people don’t when it’s this astronimcal) but he looked average at best.  I’ll try and update my thoughts as I watch more of him but it has to get better than that right?

There’s a lot of hype but he’s definitely the 1.01 pick. After you watch a few more games he may not live up to the expected hype but you’ll see why he’s in his own tier.

One of the things that I’ve learned is to tune out the hype before evaluating a player. I try my best to see that player ASAP before the hype ever begins because very rarely do they live up to the hype when it gets out of control. Majority of the time most people that are spreading the hype don’t even watch the complete game they may have seen an ESPN highlight or YouTube video at best. Watch a few more games even Zeke said he’s the Truth!

He looks tremendous to me. Watch last year’s Rose Bowl or this year’s Iowa game. Those are probably his best games, of the top of my head.

Watch the USC bowl game from last year

I just don’t have time to be way ahead of the curb like some around here so I put it off and watch the year they are coming out.  I’m sure other games I’ll see some better plays but that one was ugly.  Not the best impression off the bat.

He is the real deal. Elite talent all the way through.

While he is my #4 overall RB behind Zeke, Gurley, and Bell- I wouldn't argue if he was ranked #1.

To me, he is a bona fide first round pick in redraft and perhaps as high as #1 overall in a start up.

Announcers asking scouts for comparison

Some words

gurley like but way ####ier from side to side.

A much more physical Marshall Faulk

Franklin says he will blow up combine. 40 inch vertical with 4.3 speed.

i got him 2nd behind a Gurley also.

Bucs better not do something dumb like win tomorrow.  Good chance this kid ends up in Tampa if Bradley Chubb is not available.

It would not surprise (or disappoint) me if the giants took him at #2.   Not sold on any of the QBs coming out this year but what do i know?
