RB Saquon Barkley, PHI (1 Viewer)

Stat I heard on the broadcast and posted in the Giants thread:
LOL @ that stat

Saquon Barkley prior to this year had 6 preseason snaps
in the Giants 1st preseason game he had 5 touches
They are making him prove he isn't Mr Glass. I know this sounds like an oxymoron, but I think he is realizing he needs to run with reckless abandon to stay healthy. If he plays not to get hurt, he will get hurt.
That would be great if he plays that way. The biggest knock I've had with Barkley is that he's 230 pounds and runs like he's 190.
Remember Warrick Dunn? The dude was 180 and had back-to-back 300+ touch seasons after the age of 30. He always amazed me.
I met him when I was on deployment in Kuwait in 2006 - I have a picture of him next to me and he looked every bit of the 5-9 he was listed at as I'm 6-4 so he looked tiny. But he was built solid man I tell you what! Great guy and did so much for his community, was one of my favorite players in that time.

he seemed decisive to me, I've been burned two straight years, I might take the catnip again as I am mocking him constantly to my draft slot...

One of my favorites, and a staple of my teams for an era. And I was always able to get him late because no one believed he could keep doing what he was doing.

ESPN's Jordan Raanan believes Saquon Barkley's 2022 workload "will be huge" as long as he's healthy.

This is very much in line with everything we've heard this offseason. With almost no backfield depth behind Barkley, the fifth-year back is likely to get as many carries and targets as he can handle after a disappointing 2021 season.

I love Barkley this year and trying to snag him in the 2nd where I can but one fear is that the Giants offense may be sooo bad with no Qb, no Wr's (if Toney is hurt...which he always is) and no TE that they won't be able to sustain drives of any sort. I can see 8-9 in the box, handoff for no gain, handoff for 2 yards, pass on 3rd and 8, incomplete, punt. Rinse, repeat. I hope I'm wrong but it's just looking like their offense may be a complete dumpster fire with one option that everyone on the planet is aware of.

I'm high on Barkley this year. Crazy how everyone is willing to forgive CMC but not Barkley. I got him as my RB2 in a league and am pretty excited about it. At one point this was "the guy" and now he's on my team playing second fiddle to Derrick Henry.

Nothing but good press coming out about this offseason and we know the talent is there. He strikes me as a player that is passionate about the game as well.

I think they'll be slightly better than they've been. I still think Daniel Jones is trash, but he's been productive behind a worse OL.

All that matters to me is they feed Barkley and he never comes off the field.

Don;t disagree here but as long as he is in there for the passing downs I think it will be ok...

I'm planning to take him way higher than I even want to admit in here. All in.

ETA He's RB3 on my list behind the consensus top 2.
I really wanted him with my round 2 pick. As I had him with top 3 potential as well. Due to talent and volume.

Kamara and Barkley were sitting there and the guy in front of me took Barkely.
Yeah I am picking mid 1st and I know in my RB heavy league he's long gone by mid 2nd in this case. So......

This is free content but let me know if I shouldnt link this here. The bolds are my emphasis.

What You Need to Know:

  • “This is the healthiest that Barkley has been entering an offseason maybe since his rookie year.” That’s the word from NJ.com’s Zack Rosenblatt.
  • Barkley suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 3 of his 2nd season (2019). He likely didn’t get back to full strength at any point that season.
  • He tore his right ACL in Week 2 of 2020. That cost Barkley the rest of that season and kept him short of full strength to open 2021.
  • That was obvious in his usage and his efficiency. Barkley averaged just 12.5 carries and 4.4 targets per game in 2021, ranking 17th in opportunities per game. Over his 1st 2 seasons, though, Barkley averaged 16.5 carries and 6.7 targets per contest. Those 23.2 opportunities per game would have ranked 4th last season.
  • Barkley’s 3.7 yards per rush in 2021 fell way short of his rates in each of his 1st 2 years. He also posted significantly lower numbers in Pro Football Focus’ yards after contact per attempt, missed tackles forced, yards per route run, breakaway percentage and elusive rating.
  • Beyond his health questions, the Giants’ O-line didn’t help. The team did improve slightly in PFF run-blocking grade vs. 2020, though. The Giants climbed from 23rd to 21st in that category. They also ranked just 22nd in that category in 2019. And even though they finished higher (16th) in 2018, the team’s run-blocking grade came in lower that season than it did last year.
  • Football Outsiders ranked the Giants 31st in adjusted line yards last year, a measure of the per-carry yardage a team’s blocking accounts for. The blocking can basically only improve from there.
  • The Giants spent the 7th overall pick on OT Evan Neal. They also signed Mark Glowinski to upgrade 1 of the guard spots and 2 other reserve linemen to improve the depth.
  • Rosenblatt reports that the Giants have been running Barkley from WR spots in OTA practices – in addition to his backfield work, of course.
  • Barkley has finished each of his 3 seasons (excluding the 1.5 games of 2020) short of 1.0 in average depth of target. His 3 college seasons produced ADOTs of -0.4, 5.6 and 1.1. Among the 66 RBs who garnered 20+ targets in the NFL last season …
    • only 18 reached an ADOT of 1.0
    • just 8 reached 2.0
    • only Kyle Juszczyk and Cordarrelle Patterson topped 2.6
  • Why does that stuff matter? If an altered receiving role can add depth to Barkley’s targets, it would add upside and value to his targets. And it’s not difficult to gain an advantage on most of the position in that area.
  • These are the rest of the RBs currently on the Giants roster:
    • Matt Breida
    • Gary Brightwell
    • Jashaun Corbin
    • Sandro Platzgummer
    • Antonio Williams
  • Breida has seen his carries and targets decline for 3 straight seasons. Each of those years found his team dumping him afterward. The rest of that group has 13 total NFL carries and 2 targets. Thirteen of those opportunities came from Williams in a single 2020 game with the Bills.
  • Devontae Booker garnered 34.6% of Giants carries and 7.6% of targets last season, compared with 38.7% and 9.6%, respectively, for Barkley. Booker did not re-sign with the Giants after the season and remains on the open market as of this writing.
  • Barkley heads into the final year of his rookie contract this fall.
  • Giants beat writer Paul Schwartz writes that RB Saquon Barkley could lead the team in catches. As Schwartz put it, “there are times when it almost seems as if there is a need to tone down how much Barkley is finding the ball in his hands.”
  • Barkley has "on numerous occasions" lined up as a receiver -- both in the slot and outside.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I’d rather rake a shot at a Barkley in the late 2nd than CMC in the early 1st.
I'd be very happy with a CMC/Barkley start.
Unlikely, but possible.
Is it???!?!??!?! haha
The more good news has come out about Barkley, the more often I’ve seen him go at the end of the first or beginning of the second.

Great, now you guys have me thinking about him at 2.1

And he's burned me before.
Every year is a different year. You have to put emotions aside and view the situation freshly each year. You don‘t ignore the past but view it in context. RB’s get injured and he‘s been injured the past 2 years. His talent is undeniable, his workload could be massive so the risk is the offense and injury risk. Which RB doesn’t have injury risk…last years’ Injury was a complete freak thing. It’s not like a degenerative knee of something like that.

To me, if you can get a stud rb at the top of the 1st and Barkley in the 2nd you have a hedge in that you may have a “better“ rb on the roster in the event he gets injured again. If it works out you can have a ridiculous RB core. Also, WR is so deep you can hammer them then add a TE or QB over the next couple rounds and then go after a Stevenson, Pollard, Edmonds later in the draft. Seems too easy to me.

They need to cut down in negative runs. Part of it is the Oline and part of it is his running style. 2nd and 8 is a lot different than 2nd and 12. I love him in the early/mid 2nd round.

Not touching him for this reason. He can only score so many points all by himself and if they are 3 and out all day he's not going to get enough reps. Even if you guaranteed me 100% health I am out in the 2nd round. I hope he pops early and I can unload him in dynasty.

Sounds silly but Toney is a big part of the equation IMO. I’m an optimist. I can understand the pessimism on the Giants offense though. I have a bit of that myself. Then I think of the 2nd half of garbage time when game may be decided and he’s getting dump off after dump off.

MFL still has him as RB11 & pick ~18 overall (12 team, redraft, PPR, no-mocks, stupid 1QB format)

Kamara jumped to RB8, pick ~15-16

You still confident about those rankings @Deamon ?
