RB Saquon Barkley, PHI (1 Viewer)

I'd have taken the $23M guaranteed if I was Barkley. That contract would have got Barkely about $11.-11.5M a year so this at least gives him a chance to be whole or close to on his pay for 2023.

Seems like a solid compromise by both sides on the money but my only issue with Barkley is not getting the Giants to agree to remove the use of the tag next year. That's why I'd have just signed the tag to protect myself versus injury and performance since he can't really make much more, unless the Giants let him go to market.
Not that it matters now, but I recall seeing a report that the guaranteed part of the offer was "only" 19.5 million.
I've heard multiple sources that I trust say that Ryan Dunleavy of the NY Post has been very accurate with his reporting of the Barkley contract talks so I've been going with what he reports. I think the initial offer might have been $19.5 but when talks ended last week that amount was between $22-23M per Dunleavy.

I have him in a tier that's all nearly tied in points scored to the point that less than one TD difference between RB2-5.
Half PPR

~295 points CMC
25 point gap

~270 points Eke, Bijan, Saquon, Chubb
15 point gap

~255 points Taylor/Pollard/Henry
20 point gap

If you want to take him in the back of the first or early in the second, that's fine with me. Beyond that is a great value. Before that feels like you're giving up a better positional advantage elsewhere or hoping for a bigger improvement in NYs offense than seems realistic. It would be a tossup for me starting around pick 10 between him and a few other guys. In terms of RBs, I'd take Eke first, Bijan then probably Saquon Chubb- knowing that an injury or a few bounces are likely the difference between these guys.

I think SF is going to keep the other backs involved to keep CMC fresh. 30 touch games should be a thing of the past for him. I see the field closing on him a bit. Many TDs will go through Kittle, Aijuk, Deebo and Eli or whoever is the RB2. Eke too will see his touch share decrease and the field will close the gap a little.

He's going to be very motivated, both to hit his incentives and to get a bigger contract next offseason.

He had nearly 1700 yards and 10 TDs this season. He was the Giants entire offense. He'll be another year older. He'll have another 350+ touches of wear on his body. If he didn't get the contract he wanted this offseason, what makes you think he'll get it next offseason. The RB market has changed.

Agreed, the RB market has changed. But I bet Saquon still wants the $909,000 total he can collect this season by rushing for 1350+ yards, scoring 11+ TDs and catching 65+ passes. If he hits any of these incentives he'll have a good fantasy season.

Sure, he's not setting himself up for some big payday though.

Well, not big - but he could set himself up for a relatively big payday ( around $24mm over two years) if he stays healthy and dominates.

That about what he would get under the tags.
sure - but in this market most RBs would sign up for that. I'm not sure Barkely wouldn't be all that upset if he got a second tag that would pay him $12mm for one season.

Reports say Barkley turned down a deal with $26M in guarantees over 2 years. So making $23M over that same period would be a loss for him.

He also said he’d sit out games this year.

You guys are missing the bigger picture. After checking with other RBs, sitting out would give him zero leverage unless it was a mass holdout thing... which is what Samuel/DK/(who was the other WR?) was about to do. The RBs didn't have that type of leverage since the refusal to pay RBs is a leaguewide issue. The contract essentially is an insult, but the only thing he can do is play and walk next year.

Why did he need to check with anyone? The lack of leverage for RBs isn’t a surprise to anyone paying attention. His agent — unless he’s a buffoon — should have already been aware….

Generally when you have a issue affecting people of a certain group/job/etc., it's good to check in each other to talk about things that effect them and brainstorm how to make things better. Share information and maybe discuss current/future plans. I hear it works great for workers and alcoholics...

So anyway unless you had a mass holdout of multiple top backs (and honestly that probably wouldn't work either), nothing would change outside of Saquon losing value and the Giants winning 3-4 games at most... which probably would garner him negative press and Saquon being who he is (team leader and face of the franchise) probably didn't want that.

Not saying he will get a bigger contract. Just saying, he wants to try to get a big contract. It's more likely for him if he plays well than if he plays poorly. And we don't actually know what contract he might have gotten offered on the open market since he never was able to test it and neither was Jacobs.

I think people are sleeping a little on Saquon because he's had injuries in the past. He is still an elite talent, was great last year, he's playing to get paid this year, and the Giants offense should be improved. I have him locked in as a top 5 RB, and potentially #1 RB overall.

Giants have no commitment to him beyond this season so they will ride him hard. He will want to prove to the Giants or someone else he still has it. Sprinkle in the incentives of the 1 year deal he signed. Record (or close to record) year for him if he can stay healthy. Team Saquon here and hoping for the best.

I pray it was only a sprain and he can just sit out vs the nasty 49ers run DF on Thursday. It be a minor Miracle if he was back in 2 weeks and I would happily take that.

I was having a pretty good day until this happened. The fact they were just running out the clock for the FG and for it to happen basically on the 2nd to last possible play Barkley would be in the game made it feel that much worse. I always fear the late game ending meaningless injuries not that the game was meaningless but all they were doing was running clock out to set up the FG so in a sense it was meaningless plays and he got hurt on that. BRUTAL.

If it is a high ankle sprain, the issue isn't just how many games he misses. It's what kind of shape he's in when he gets back. A lot of time, especially when guys come back on the early end of the prognosis, it takes them a few more games to get back to where they were. We saw this with Saquon himself in 2019.

The only good thing about the situation is he never was in a walking boot, which usually is a harbinger of the high-ankle sprain. IMHO he's out Week 3 and Week 4, but I can see him trying to play that Seahawks game.

CBS reporting this morning team believes he avoided a high ankle sprain. He's getting an MRI today hopefully to confirm this
This sounds like good news. With that being said, I hope that even if he's healthy the Giants hold him out this week against the 49ers and let him fully heal. I doubt he'll get many points against them anyways and I'd rather have a healthy Saquon the rest of the year then risk him playing on a tender ankle against one of the best D's in the NFL this week.

I would agree that between the tough matchup on the road versus the Niners and the sometimes wackiness of TNF games, it wouldn't be the worst thing to have Barkley on the bench this week. Let's just hope with two full weeks of rest he'll be OK.

I doubt he suits up on Thursday but an interesting comment from Daboll today.

Interesting from Brian Daboll on Saquon Barkley when asked if he's going to be out some time: "I wouldn't count on that."

Followed up on TNF: "I'm not saying that he's out yet. ... He's a quick healer. we're going to take it all the way up to Thursday with him."
Coach speak to try and have SF have to prepare for Barkley

Coachspeak. Just want to give Niners the thought.

Beat me to it.

I'd give a 5% chance he plays, but at least sounds promising that he may not be out as long as initially thought.
I'll say 100% chance he does not play against The Niners Thursday.
Then with 11 days(Monday Night) before their next game, two weeks removed from the injury. NOT a high ankle sprain, maybe 50% chance he plays The Monday Nighter.
And Daboll will keep saying "maybe, hopefully,we'll see"
The in the Monday Night game he runs out of the locker room right before kick-off ala Willis Reed(google him kids) and leads The G-Men to victory!

Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Saquon Barkley (ankle) has made “considerable progress” over the past two days.
The Giants, for now, are acting like Barkley might be able to suit up Thursday night against the 49ers following the apparently-serious ankle injury he sustained Sunday against Arizona. “I’m not saying he’s out yet,” Daboll said Tuesday. “He’s a quick healer. He feels a lot better today. I just talked to him. We’ll see where we are at.” We’ll have to wait until Thursday night inactives to see whether Barkley will play through his ankle issue. If he sits, Matt Breida would likely operate as the Giants’ No. 1 back. He’s worth a waiver add.
