Flawless

Didn't see this one covered yet, another movie I hadn't heard of but also enjoyed. About a diamond heist by a janitor and a company executive. Michael Caine is entertaining as always, and usually Demi Moore annoys me but I thought she was good in this one. A little cheesy at some parts and nothing that hasn't been done before, but overall it was very entertaining and I would recommend. 3.5/5
I disagree on this one. This is the first role from Demi where she really looked "aged" to me, which is completely natural, but hard for me to accept. Her accent was really really bad. I wanted to like it, but the cheese parts (I can't remember much for specifics) really destroyed it for me, I spent much of the movie shaking my head. I have a hard time accepting heist movies that take misdirection a little too far. Oceans 12 would be the best example of that.I would be generous giving it a 1.5/5 on my scale.

If you haven't seen The Bank Job yet, check that out and then compare it to Flawless. It is head and shoulders above it in every single aspect.

Is The Fall a foreign language movie with subtitles?
No, no subtitles.Watch it, you won't be disappointed.
I have the Blu-Ray on my shelf at home.
The Blu-Ray should blow you away, especially if you think to yourself while your watching it that no blue screen or any computer special effects were used. Awestrucking scenary is a vaste understatement. They litterally had to scour the entire Earth to find the locations they used to film and the direction is nothing short of fantastic.

3:10 to Yuma: I've had this forever and finally got around to watching it. A good movie all around. Christian Bale is slowly becoming my favorite actor. The last few movies I've seen him in he has been great (Batman, Harsh Times and this) and can't wait to see him as the Terminator! One thing I didn't like about this movie was the ending. 4/5
Other good Bale movies: Velvet Underground and The Machinist.

:goodposting: I posted about this one when I tried to watch it on a plane in July. Pretty awful. And the accent was horrifying.

Definitely. That movie was a lot of fun.

I didn't see all of Laurel Canyon, but Natascha McElhone in that movie = :boing:

Saw V

I thought the major theme of the movie (learning about the 'hero' cop) was well done and probably the strongest since the 1st movie, but the actual people currently trying to beat Jigsaw's test was by far the weakest of any of the movies. The movie was only about 82 minutes too, and they only devoted probably 15 min tops to the current group being tested

Ending was nothing too surprising. I liked the major plotline, but overall this should have been better considering the potential it had

Just saw, "Ripple Effect"...and I'm not sure what to think. I'll admit that I was a bit distracted while watching it so that could be the reason that I'm a bit confused. For anyone who has seen it...did they ever explain the relationship of the main character and the billionaire? Why didn't he want to have a pizza and beer with him? The movie ended and I was left with that gaping hole and couldn't resolve it...so I'm undecided on this one.
Anyone?

akira kurasawa's "high and low". it's a netflix recommendation that was only so-so. i love toshiro mifune is this kind of role. not akira's best but still kind of entertaining.

"naked city" by jules dassin of "thieves highway", "night and the city", "rififfi" and "topkapi" fame. aspires to be a gritty noir but instead feels like a TV movie of the week. didn't care for it at all.

The Strangers

Started off well, but in the end disapointing and not that good. Can't say much else with out spoilers. 1.5 out of 5.

Watched two movies today:

THE BANK JOB - Fantastic thriller, great acting. One of the best of 2008

and

THE HAPPENING - God awful. Mark Wahlberg is horrible, but Zooey Deschanel gives one of the worst performances ever

Hmph. I loved High and Low. My review is somewhere in the previous 8000 pages. Three "meh" movies for me the past few days:

Standard Operating Procedure: I don't really love Errol Morris movies. There, I said it. As far as documentary filmmakers go, I find his stuff overproduced and too slick, with the enactments, voiceovers, and music just too much. Still, I wanted to see this one about Abu Ghraib. As usual, the subject matter was fascinating, and Morris was able to get incredible insight into the events there and put it together in a compelling way. And also as usual, the over-the-top music (by Danny Elfman) and slickness of it turned me off. As for the events that took place, they were really all so much worse than the mainstream press would have us know. The movie became almost unwatchable, just because of the subject matter. 3/5

Frances: I had TiVo'ed this 1982 classic a couple of years ago and wanted to clear out some space. This is from the period of time when either Meryl Streep or Jessica Lange had every leading female role in movies. Lange was certainly good in this, if you like "Acting" with a capital "A". I generally prefer a bit more subtlyet. In any case, Frances Farmer's life was somewhat interesting, and the movie was somewhat good as a result. But nothing really to put it in a higher league. 2.5/5

Flight of the Red Balloon: This had three things going for it: (1) it's in French, (2) it's slow, and (3) I loved The Red Balloon. Why someone decided to make a follow-up to it so many years later, and to make it virtually unwatchable, is a mystery, though. It's a bad sign when the balloon is by far the most compelling character, and the best actor. 1/5

 My boyfriend feels the same way...he's a huge fan. I just watch tons and tons of documentaries, and I prefer a raw style to this overly polished stuff he does. And really, the music and the reenactments drive me crazy. I did love The Thin Blue Line, though.

Tropic Thunder: With such a great lineup of actors you'd think it would be a pretty funny movie. Nope. I think I chuckled twice. The only decent character in the movie was Les (Tom Cruise). Seriously, if they just let these guys go without a script, it would have been far better. 1/5

The Mummy 3: It was better than the new Indiana Jones movie but I guess that isn't really saying too much. If you liked the first couple movie then you'll like this one. I dosed off a couple times during it so maybe I missed something good... I doubt it though. At least the effects were pretty good. 2/5

The Interview: Steve Bushcemi (sp?) as a political reporter interviewing a movie star (Sienna Miller HOT!). It is just the two of them for the entire movie so if you don't like one of them, you won't like the movie. The characters were really developed well and had a great plot twist at the end. Definitely worth a watch. 3.5/5

This one didnt really put much focus on the people currently being 'tested', but on jigsaw's next protege. What Im saying was emphasis on the protege was pretty good, but the current 'testees' part was pretty lame. Thus, it had potential to be better, but the currently being tested people plotline dragged it down.

More stating that a review about any of the Saw movies that had "well done" "liked the plotline" or "the potential it had" in it doesn't compute. :bag:

see, i like the panache of morris. i like the glass soundtracks. i love the fact that errol's work has redefined the genre. he has raised questions like "what is truth?" and "is it a documentary or a simply a historical narrative?". his work is always provocative, always interesting to me. "TBL" is one of my top 10 films, regardless of genre.

Seriously! Not saying horror is anywhere close to my favorite genre, but they pull these off intelligently for the most partI cant think of any horror movie/series thats come out in awhile where Hollywood puts $$ into previews/commercials and are better than the Saw series

The Mist is about the only movie that comes to mind that can challenge the Saw's

kind of the same for me. i'm just not a fan of the genre, nevermind snuff films in general.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth - 6/10 - Had a lot of the same feel as "Shark Boy & Lava Girl" in terms of hokeyness brought on by the 3D nonsense. But it was watchable for a family film. My kids liked it.

The Hulk - 7.75/10 - An extra .25 for the amazing CGI effects, but a .25 deduction for lack of plot. Not as good as Iron Man but close.

Hostel and Saw (insert roman numeral) are nothing near the same movie.Yeah, the first half hour of Hostel was basically teen movie > softcore porn, but Saw is not like it at all. If anything, Hostel is about being mutilated for no reason pretty much. Saw is about learning from your previous crimes/mistakes/choices and making a decision

If youre judging "Saw ()" by "Hostel", you dont realize what youre overlooking.

Hostel was somewhat entertaining, but you dont have to think about what youre watching. Saw is pretty different

The movie was only about 82 minutes too, and they only devoted probably 15 min tops to the current group being tested

Ending was nothing too surprising. I liked the major plotline, but overall this should have been better considering the potential it had

I am so happy that I've never seen one minute of those movies.
You dont know what youre missing JDoggThey basically created a new genre of thriller/horror

Ive never spent more than $1 to see any of them, and I def got my money's worth
Well, I just don't dig on torture porn. I watched Hostel, and these kinds of movies don't work for me.

You make good points. However, I watched a ton of horror flicks in previous years. So I appreciate the genre. But I think things changed for me when my son was born. Suddenly, these movies seemed ugly and gratuitous.

There are definitely a lot worse horror/thriller movies out there.
Yinzer, I like you more and more with every post, our taste in films is almost identical.Seriously! Not saying horror is anywhere close to my favorite genre, but they pull these off intelligently for the most part

I cant think of any horror movie/series thats come out in awhile where Hollywood puts $$ into previews/commercials and are better than the Saw series

The Mist is about the only movie that comes to mind that can challenge the Saw's
Im not sure if youre rippin me or agreeing with me, bc that first line from the last post was not mine (I dont talk to myself, thankfully). Im guessing you just placed your response in the wrong place :excited:
I was agreeing with you, my reponse was just in the wrong place. I really enjoyed the Mist and I enjoyed the original Saw and Saw 4. The 2nd one was too much like Manhunt (Video Game) for me to consider too original and the syringe scene was too much for me. The third one I thought was pretty bad.

I refuse to watch the Hostel movies because of the "torture porn", but I agree that the Saw series is a completely different type of animal.

Watched a couple when not obsessing about the election:

Joshua: Really creepy movie about a really creepy kid. Kid's parents have a new baby and then all sorts of odd things start happening, and the parents start to suspect the kid is behind them. I wouldn't call it a "horror" movie, but it has a great suspenseful, creepy feel to it from the very beginning. Definitely recommended if you like creepy movies. Have I mentioned it was creepy? 4/5

Man Push Cart: Hugely disappointing movie about a Palestinian rock star who ends up manning a mobile food cart in the streets of NYC. I suppose it was to be a meditation on loneliness and feelings of being foreign, but I just didn't connect with it. 2/5

I dont even know if Ive seen Saw 3. When I started watching 5, it began where the last movie left off, which I viewed (the 1 with the Indian chick Dr. trying to save jigsaw), but I thought that was 3. After checking out IMDb, that was 3, so I guess I havent seen 4?. In this case, I didnt think 3 was bad, but its not as good as 1 or 5 from what I remember. I guess Ill have to check out 4 today.Agreed on 2. I found it pretty cheesy. It felt like a bad TV miniseries or something.

Also, I dont understand why they dont try to bring in more good actors for the last few movies. Theyre certainly profiting enough from the movies to afford it. Part of what made the 1st movie as good as it was, was having Danny Glover, Cary Elwes, Ken Leung, and Monica Potter. About the only other actors I can think of from 1 on are Donnie Wahlberg (who I recognize bc of his brother), Angus McFadyen (who I recognize), and Dina Meyer (who I recognize bc of her topless scene in Starship Troopers). I cant say any of them are good actors.

Itd be nice if they brought a good actor in to play the next 'jigsaw', to say the least
