watched "smoking aces" on cable over the weekend. this was kind of fun but for the really crappy ending.
Yeah. This is an unabashed Guy Ritchie ripoff. Which really wouldn't bother me at all if the last 30 minutes wasn't so heavy-handed.
To its own credit, the last 30 minutes did include one of the sweetest .50 caliber picking off Federal agents scenes in film history.I agree with jdogg that it isn't anything more than a loud, stupid, Richie ripoff, but sometimes that's all I'm looking for and I wouldn't mind if they made more of them.
i think i sort of grew bored with the piven - crying, coked up and addled - character after the first few minutes of the film. everyone and everything else was more interesting. this includes andy "inert" garcia! the backstory didn't need the near constant looping (it's not an errol morris film) but instead should have focused on the convergence of all of those characters onto the hotel. i thought of this film as being more a jerry bruckheimer film than anything guy ritchie could cook up.
The colorful characters were the strength of this movie. The dumb, overblown reveal at the end was soooo not necessary.

very true. i'll say this: i never really gave alicia keys a second thought until this flick. common was also pretty good with his soliloquy.
She was smokin' hot in that.I agree the movie was mediocre - it needed the humor of a Ritchie film.

Agree on both counts. The two both have a natural, charismatic presence.

State of Play: A wild and crazy political thriller with more twists and turns than a roller coaster... seriously, there is a giant twist every 5 minutes, kind of gets annoying especially when you know that the major twist is coming and pretty obvious. Still a good movie if you don't mind your intelligence being insulted. I'm starting to get sick of the 'reporter uncovers scandal to save the world' shtick. 3/5

Fighting: Meh. Some decent fights and that's about it. It doesn't compare to the movie its trying to emulate (read: completely rip-off), Gladiator. It is better than every piece of trash that Van Damme put out (except Bloodsport). Zulay Henao ;) . 2/5

Just saw Surveillance with Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond. It was quirky enough that I liked it although the deputies playing havoc on the back roads of Nebraska was a little over the top.

Tyson

Sometimes its easy to forget just what a monster he was in his prime. He did a really good job articulating himself and displaying some real emotion. I would have never have guessed that an 80 year old white man had so much influence on his life. Have to take some of it with a grain of salt, but he does take responsibility for pretty much everything. Only had bad things to say about King and the woman who accused him of rape. As far as a documentary, its just Tyson sitting on a couch talking and archive footage, but he is such an interesting person that I really didn't need anything else to focus on. Thought it was interesting how he would nonchalantly talk about robbing drug dealers at gunpoint when he was 13 but then talk about how scared he was to get in the ring with his peers during the same time period. Definitely an inferiority complex there that he discusses as well, he just didn't want to be scared, ever again. Pretty sure it worked. It's too bad he had to piss away over a hundred million (Maybe 200? More?), but he would already be dead if he had continued living at that pace, so I guess you could call it a mixed blessing.

4.5/5

Can't miss for fight fans or anybody with a shred of interest about Tyson.

:tumbleweed: I also enjoyed this. Really made me see Tyson alot differently... I kind of feel bad for the guy. Its too bad that Gus died when he did. He was the only person that actually cared about Tyson and was interested in helping him, not ripping him off. Tyson probably has the mental capacity of an 8th grade kid and that really got taken advantage of without Gus.

Franklyn: The most original movie I've seen in years. It is kind of along the lines of Fight Club or The Machinist. For the first hour it makes zero sense. One scene will be in modern day London, the next will be in a city in the future where religion rules and if you do not profess a religion, you'll be thrown in jail. We're not talking regular religion... there are 7th Day Manicurists and people who worship a set of Washing Machine instructions. The movie has 3 separate story lines that eventually weave together and until they do you're left wondering what the hell is going on. It probably should have been about a half hour longer to really flesh out some of the storylines. Definitely one of my favorites so far this year. 4/5

watched coppolla's "the conversation" tonight on TCM. it's borderline perfect. the script is so tight. hackman gives such a layered, nuanced performance. i've seen it maybe 20-25 times and always manage to find something new. in my top 10 list without reservation.

Hackman is so brilliant in that. There's a scene where he's talking with his landlord on the phone, and Hackman is irritated that the landlord looked at his mail. I just marveled at Hackman's acting and thought that there may not be a better living actor.

One of the most overrated movies of all time, IMO. I just didn't see the big deal at all.

I thought the ending was weak. But in the end, everything is overrated.

Watched Equilibrium earlier today. I have to admit, after the first 20 minutes or so, I thought this was going to be a really stupid movie... but it turned out to be pretty good. I've pretty much enjoyed all of Christian Bale's movies, with the exception of Empire of the Sun, which I couldn't even finish.

Saw Copland again after many years.

I remember when this flick came out, and it was supposed to be the beginning of Sly's venture into dramatic acting.

He didn't seem to follow through on that, and it was painfully obvious why: he's a movie star, not an actor.

You could see guys like De Niro, Liotta and Keitel put the brakes on in any scene with him because they knew he could never keep up.

Still, it was a pretty good movie.

State of Play (Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe) - Meh. It was kind of interesting, but just didnt have enough OOMPH to keep the story going. It dragged and I lost interest halfway through. Crowe was good, IMO, but Affleck was typical cardboard Affleck. Rachel McAdams was boring, but Jason Bateman was a pleasant surprise in his small role. 6/10

Land Of The Lost (Will Ferrell). Holy crap. I actually had to TRY to make it 30 minutes in. Some funny lines here and there by Farrell and Danny McBride, but this is one of the WORST movies I have ever attempted to watch. I think I actually watched 45 minutes to an hour and left the room to do more constructive things. 1/10

The Hurt Locker - Pretty good, but not great. Well acted, and some cool fight/explosion scenes, but it dragged a bit and I was looking at the clock wondering when it would be over. May have been a situation of too much hype going in. 7/10

Adam Carolla has a whole sh-peel on this movie/show on his podcast, pretty damn funny.

I'm still trying to figure out how. The action sequences were clear rip-offs of The Matrix. And it was very predictable. But it was somehow a solid movie. The Wiki article on it says Bale's kill total for the movie was the 3rd most all time. No surprise there; he slaughtered people by the dozen.

I guess it proves that if you do something well, it's lack of originality doesn't matter. That's how I felt about Gladiator. It's been done a bunch of times, but it was done very well.

Continued my classics theme with a few more over the last week or so;

Casablanca:

For whatever reason I was putting this one off. REALLY ended up liking the movie. Can't think of anything I didn't like about it.

Notorious

Had a Hitchcock night that will be followed by 3-4 more over the next few days. Looking at lists and reviews, this one was rated quite high but ended up falling short for me. I think the problem I had with it was that I never bought that they cared about each other at all - there didn't seem to be any chemistry between the two leads. Wasn't bad by any stretch, but it didn't blow my hair back, either.

Psycho

I had seen this one before, but decided to revisit it. Really a fantastic movie. The thing that stood out to me the most on this repeat viewing was just how good Anthony Perkins was in this movie. IMO one of the best roles ever in a movie. Just nailed the sudden changes needed during the scenes, especially the first set when Marion Crane gets to the Motel and has a sandwich with him. The movie is great, but Perkins and the score elevate the movie even more.

I can live with that

Major League: Caught it on AMC this weekend. Probably the greatest movie ever made. 5/5

Surveillance: Decent but seemed like a ripoff of Natural Born Killers and Super Troopers. The big twist wasn't very surprising either. I'm not really sure what they were trying to pull off with the cops in this. It seemed like they were trying to imitate the guys from Super Troopers and failed badly. 2.5/5

The Crypt: Horrible piece of garbage. I'd really like to know who is stupid enough to fund this kind of movie. 0/5

Management: Typical romantic comedy without the comedy and of course, completely unrealistic. The guy is basically a mildly ######ed stalker and yet somehow the super successful hot chick falls for him. Woody Harrelson was the only good thing in this movie and he had maybe 5 minutes of screen time. I really wish the girlfriend would stop making me watch these. 2/5

Thank You For Smoking: I really enjoyed this one. Good humor, good story and great acting. 4.5/5

Red Sands: A few soldiers desecrate an old statue in Iraq and release an old Genie that comes back to haunt them and screw with their heads. Not a great movie but as far as low budget horror movies go, it is one of the better I've seen. 3/5

Wow, sounds like you're doing something similar to what I'm doing, checking out classic movies with an emphasis on Hitchcock (although I've taken a break over the past week or two and watched some more recent movies).I haven't seen Casablanca, but the DVD has been sitting on my shelf for about 2 months now. I'll eventually get around to watching it.

My gripe with Notorious is the same as yours. It's like he just made the decision to love the crazy chick, with absolutely no rhyme or reason for doing so. Any other guy would not have put up with any of her nonsense, much less stuck it out as long as he did. I just wasn't buying the love story at all.

I think I'm up to having seen maybe a dozen or so Hitchcock movies at this point, but I still haven't seen Psycho (or The Birds, for that matter). Both are queued up and ready to go, but I think I might save one of these for last, because I've got about 10 of his lesser-known films waiting for me as well, and I want to make sure I'm left with a good taste in my mouth, if that makes any sense. My favorite up to this point, by far, has been Vertigo.

I need to re-watch this one. The only part that I remember about this movie was at the beginning, when he completely pwns the lawyer in court who is suing the tobacco companies. I do remember that I liked this movie a lot though.

That happens near the end. At the beginning, he is on the Joan London show and makes a complete fools out of an anti-smoking guy with is a Senator's (William H. Macy) aid.

Ah yes, that must have been what I was thinking about. Thanks. :excited: I believe this was the role that basically earned that dude the part of Two Face.

i like "vertigo" well enough. it might be the handsomest of the hitchcock movies. that said, it's not a favorite. have you seen "rear window" yet? that might be his best thriller. "the birds" seems like his most unexpected film, imo.

I'm sure I watched this one based on a review read somewhere long ago in this thread. I'm not exactly sure what to think of this one. The acting was top notch, Kingsley was brilliant, and I really enjoy Ian McShane a lot, he has the scariest, iciest stare in the history of forever. But, as a movie as a whole, it seemed to fail to delivery in the end and I can't exactly place my finger on why. It could be because a bit of the dialog was hard to follow, with their thick, slang filled accents. But I think moreso, the overall plot was just so-so and choppy....and what was with the latent homosexual feel with the pool boy and Ray Winstone's character, that was a bit peculiar. There was some parts of this movie that were fantastic though too, so I guess all in all, it's about as mixed a review I can give. I'm going to leave it unscored too because I can't figure out whether to rank it a 1.0 or 4.0. Interesting piece though - maybe should be viewed for Kingsley's character alone.

this was my problem with it really. i had problems following the dialog as well as the plotting. mcshane is a favorite of mine too. he reminds me of oliver reed in his prime somehow.

Equilbrium is one of my favorite movies, and while the comparisions to The Matrix are obvious, it really seems like a diffrent feeling movie all together. Maybe due to the difference between Bale and Keanu. The kill total is interesting. He does rack up the numbers. I'm guessing Rambo would be number one? Chuck Norris in a MIA film? My only grip with Equilbrium is:

Yup, "Rear Window" was one of the first Hitchcock films that I watched. I thought it was very good, but Vertigo makes my top 10 all time list... I just really, really loved that movie.

I pretty much agree with all of this.

Angels with Dirty Faces was a great movie. It was interesting to see how much Cagney had progressed as an actor since The Public Enemy. There was also plenty of unintentional comedy from all the old-time slang, mannerisms, and slapstick. Highly recommended to anyone who likes crime/mob films (and who doesn't?) or great classic films.

Anyone have any other Cagney recommendations?
Check out White Heat for another great Cagney movie.

I watched Slumdog Millionaire last night. An entertaining and dramatic movie. It was predictable, but to its credit, it didn't really pretend not to be. The wife and I are fairly sick of torture in film. Is there a lot in this one?

nah, this is danny boyle after all. it reads more like charles dickens than eli roth.

Sexy Beast

I wasn't sure about this movie the first time. But seeing it a second time, I loved it.

I watched Slumdog Millionaire last night. An entertaining and dramatic movie. It was predictable, but to its credit, it didn't really pretend not to be. It was a little unrealistic how Jamal's older brother grew up to be so ugly. Also, it was really silly when they all danced in the train station during the credits, but that's sort of irrelevant to the movie itself. Anyway, these are minor and irrelevant gripes, and I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it. The prototype of a "feel-good" movie, complete with "guy meets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl" and "rags-to-riches."

Thanks. The wife is really down on torture as a device, so it's nice to see that's not a big deal here.

It's not over-the-top by any means, but there are a couple of scenes that are not for the squeamish. And it is, after all, very much a "feel good movie."

I've wasted about 3 or 4 hours of my life over the past week or so watching The Last Don and The Last Don II. They were pretty terrible. I'm a sucker for mafia movies, so I just had to see them through, but wow... these were terrible. The first movie started out okay, but it was a slow but steady decline until the ending of the second one. Definitely not recommended.

Saw Death Proof and man did that suck! Incredibly boring until the last 10 minutes, which were very funny. I liked Planet Terror so I was surprised that this was so bad.

Also saw Paul Blart, Mall Cop. Wasn't expecting much and was still disappointed.

Saw The Wrestler last week, A tough, gritty and very good film.

If you're interested in a light mob comedy, David Mamet's "Things Change" with Don Ameche and Joe Mantegna was entertaining.
