I posted this in the Avatar thread, but I wanted to re-post here just because this is the "official" FFA movie thread.

Avatar

Wow.

Amazing movie. The short story is my friend from Industrial Light and Magic invited me to a private screening at Lucas Ranch. The theater was beautiful, the sound was incredible, and I admit is was cool watching the movie alongside the people that contributed to some of the special effects.

But the movie...just incredible. My first thought after seeing this movie was of George Lucas. Because I don't want to know what Lucas SAYS about this movie. I want to know what he THINKS. How can Lucas watch this movie without envy? In Avatar, James Cameron takes all the promise of the last three Star Wars movies and even some of the same technology and gives us a far better movie than Lucas is capable of creating. There's no doubt that Lucas has a brilliant creative mind. But Lucas simply cannot write a movie or competently direct actors to produce a film this good.

In some ways, Avatar achieves the same effect that WALL•E did so well: Avatar has long stretches that are pure CGI, but the execution is so good you get lost in a story that in 100% simulated. I think that's a special feat. I have long complained that CGI is woefully inadequate in that it takes you right out of the story instantly. But in Avatar, Cameron and the effects groups have succeeded in creating a world where you sometimes forget it's all fake.

The movie has obvious parallels to the current war in the middle east. And the Native American metaphor is also thinly veiled. Avatar is a bit like Inglourious Basterds in that it's almost a fantasy wish-fulfillment about the plight of the Native Americans. Some will dismiss Cameron's politics here as simplistic or even anti-American.

I think Avatar was fantastic.

Just watched Bigger, Stronger, Faster on my netflix account

Very interesting documentary.

Really made me re-think the whole roid thing

Taken - Liam Neeson. Daughter is kidnapped overseas and he trys to hunt the kidnappers down.

I thought it was a pretty solid action  flick
I remember we saw this one. I remember really disliking it... but I don't remember why.
The plot is a bit of a stretch and things are too easy with holes. I could see disliking it easily but it held my attention for the 2 hours so I give it a passing grade on the  chart
Not bad for a 90 minute movie GB :hophead: . Plus the daughter was just way to annoying

I saw Taken. Decent but nothing special. Glad I didn't spend any money on it.

Last night I couldn't sleep wo I managed to catch The Wrestler from start to finish. While watching the movie I kept thinking to myself that it was nothing special. When it was over I realized it was a very very good movie. No one scene is perfect but taken together the story is very well done.

I was flicking around yesterday and managed to hit just the right moment. thanks marissa :lmao:

Worth a watch. It was Christopher Nolan's directorial debut.

The payoff isn't quite worth the rest of it, and it's definitely noir in the fact that the plot is rather preposterous and reliant too much on coincidence. But if you like independent type films then this one is pretty decent.

BTW - I love Netflix's On Demand feature.

Public Enemies was ok but I had hoped for more with Bale and Depp. It came off more like a re-enactment with the lack of depth of the characters. The cat-n-mouse game between Purvis and Dillinger never had any real tension, even in their scene together. Worth a watch but not something I'd recommend.

2.5/5

watched two films over the weekend...

"the lookout" with joseph gordon-levitt. i added this to my netflix queue many months ago. i liked the noir style of "brick" and hoped this was of the same mold. it's not. it's kind of run-of-the-mill crime caper, in fact. JGL doesn't get much to work with here. kind of disappointed. isla fisher was nice eye candy.

pixar's "up". kind of cute but that's about it. very nice CGI work here.

Undercover Brother - I watched this on Comedy Central on Saturday. I'd never seen it and thought it would be terrible - but I laughed. Quite a bit. It's funny.

Clueless

Not very good. I can see why Alecia Silverstone doesn't appear in much anymore.

And it's spooky that I watched this on Friday and Brittany Murphy died over the weekend.

I never see movies anymore, but Anvil! The Story of Anvil was pretty good. Sort of a cross between American Movie and Spinal Tap. It's almost ridiculous how Spinal Tappy they are.

Didn't love this. Such a bizarre concept. I looked over at my two year old during the montage of the old man's life and he looked confused. A little too much sad for my liking in a Pixar film.
I thought it was a mess in plotting it. old man rails against the changing world? old man seeks adventure? buddy pic with kid? eco-calamity? talking dogs? wtf? "the incredibles" showed how complex and adult themes can be juggled within a kids film to great success.

Charlie Wilson's War - thought it was very well done. Told the story accurately and in about as much depth as they could get into in the time allotted. I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman was absolutely money. I'm not sure Gust himself could have played that role better.

THis is a classic comedy and one of my favorite "Black" films

Agree on both movies. Although The Wrestler had me from the very beginning.

That's a great movie. My boss really likes this a lot. So much, in fact, that the movie poster hangs on our office wall. :goodposting:

We rented "Whatever Works" on Saturday night. I'm a huge Larry David fan and I love Woddy Allen and thought the marraige of the two of them would bleed genius. But this was really bland, incredibly boring and utterly ridiculous. The plot was preposterous and the acting was weak. Some of the scenes felt like a really bad porno movie without the sex. Larry David had a few funny lines, but most of his material was vapid rambling.

I fell asleep before the end of this movie and I don't care if I never find out what happens in the end.

dumb.

Taking Woodstock

Some good performances and Ang Lee's style really makes it feel like you are there. The acid trip sequence was pretty close to as real as it gets. That being said, Dimitri Martin is a horrible, expressionless actor and couldn't relate to him at all. Of course, he is also a closet homosexual and the film never really addresses this head on, just has some extremely awkward scenes.

3/5

World's Greatest Dad

When I first watched this, it made me angry, very angry. This is some seriously twisted dark comedy they try to address here, which doesn't surprise me since it was directed by Bobcat Goldwaithe. If you like dark comedies and aren't a father, you may want to give this a try. If you are a father, you may find better entertainment elsewhere.

They should be, Taking Woodstock was released on DVD last week, I also saw some ads for it on Charter onDemand for PPV. World's Greatest Dad was a direct to video release starring Robin Williams, it came out maybe 2 weeks ago on DVD.

Just hadn't had a chance to see it yet. I'm not a fan of Julia Roberts. But I'll watch pretty much any movie with Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

It doesn't dwell on it and doesn't last too long. This one doesn't have any crazy cartoon character visuals or fireworks, just a gentle blurring of colors and that awkward tripped out distraction you get when trying to focus on anything.Emile Hirsch was good as the Vietnam vet, but some of the flashbacks backs were over the top and his character didn't have much of a purpose. Liev Schreiber is great playing a cross dressing ex-Army Ranger body guard. He plays the role completely straight faced, he's just dressed in full drag.

Its a beautiful film and a lot of parts are like watching archive footage, but it doesn't touch on the music at all, they never even get within a half mile of the stage. I don't even think they use the word "Woodstock" in the film, I had to research a little to make sure they were telling the story of Woodstock and not another festival set around the same time period. That was kind of weird for me. Also, a little too "Brokeback Mountain" for me tastes if I can say that without coming across as a complete homophobe.

Find some time to watch it. Hanks is great eating up the scenes and is very true to the character. I don't have much of a stomach for Roberts either, but she isn't a focal point of the movie. PSH is as good as he's ever been, just a little over the top but it works to add a little comedy to the story.

The Other Man

Liam Neilson, Antonio Banderas (sp?)

One guy hunts down the guy his wife was cheating on him with. Mildly entertaining. Not much happens though.

Agree 100%. I was not happy with this film either and didn't want to review it. I think it is completely irresponsible of the filmmakers to cover this material. All it will do is put ideas in the minds of young males.

Cool. I like Ang Lee, so I will almost certainly see the movie. Liev Schreiber is very underrated. I liked his role in The Sum of All Fears.

It's rated "R". So a teen shouldn't be watching this movie without an adult. I'm not big on censoring adult films so that parents won't need to carefully monitor their kid's TV watching.

I'm as liberal as anyone when it comes to film and have seen pretty much all of it, but this is one the few times I have been close to shutting something off because it was "so $$$$$$ up". Just the way the film addresses and the way it is portrayed is almost inhuman. As a parent, you will want to cry or become angry watching this because there really is no reason for it. It is a true "shock" point, as much as anything that has been done in Asian cinema. I ended up liking the film, and that may be an indication that I am indeed a twisted soul and I'm still not quite sure if the ends justifies the means.Watch only if you have a very morbid, twisted sense of humor. Otherwise, it will haunt you by how shallow and distracted the experience is.

Are you kidding me? How many R-rated movies did you watch before you turned 17? I watched a ton.I've got 12yos in my classroom telling me how awesome the Saw franchise is. If it's out there, they'll see it. And a few of them will be dumb enough to try it.

So, movies shouldn't be allowed to depict murder? Kids might try that. Or drug use? Kids might try that. Maybe we should take everything of question out, and end up with Savannah Smiles. That'll be good for the kids.

Pretty sure all the dude's trying to say that subject matter is gut-wrenching, and how it is handled doesn't help any. Also the fact that the act is a complete joke to the kid makes it worse. As a parent this is about as offensive and obscene as a film could be, that's all I'm trying to say anyways. I don't want to get out the censorship whistle, but this subject matter isn't going to sit well with anybody. Except sociopaths, of course, which I'm positive Bobcat Goldwaithe is.

I understand. When a movie presents that kind of dark material, it's hard not to question if the choice to include that subject was absolutely necessary or simply exploitive.

I watched too many inappropriate movies as a kid. That doesn't validate my parents' choices, though.

I tend to like some of the Woody Allen movies that are not so popular. So it's possible I might like this one.
