i watched Funny People a few weeks ago and thought it was one of the best films i had seen all year... the message i took from it was kind of a... life is short... enjoy it while you can... things don't usually work out the way you want... but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy life... let go of regrets... blah blah blah... i know all those messages i wrote sound very cliche... but the movie was done well... and i thought it was good that it wasn't one of those where "everything worked out in the end". Things didn't all work out in the end... but even though they didn't... the film ended with what i interpreted as a positive outlook... instead of a doom and gloom feel...it had a lot of funny moments as well... and it kind of turned the mirror on hollywood people... showing them to be very shallow...
hated it.One of the worst endings I've ever seen. Muddled doesn't even begin to describe it.
life is muddled... i kind of thought thats what they were trying for...
exactly. and if Tarantino had done it there'd be a 40 page tribute

Movie went off a cliff once they got to Leslie Mann's house. Actually got uncomfortable. Still don't know why Eric Bana took that role.

I have Extract out on rental but haven't watched it and probably won't get the chance. Is it good?
I don't think Judge will ever make another comedy as funny as Office Space. But Extract is worth watching. There aren't a lot of laugh out loud moments. But the movie is entertaining.
Just watched Extract last night.....dumbest movie I've seen in a while. The annoying neighbor was somewhat entertaining but other than that was pretty bad.

Stayed up really late last night and watched "Marathon Man" last night on HBO. HOLY CRAP, am I glad I did. What a freaking movie! I cannot believe I missed this prior. Watching this made me realize that I need to start looking backwards, not forwards for great movies. There's so much I must have missed if I missed this.

Seriously, Marathon Man was a treat to watch. 4.5/5
that's a really good thriller. just a classic...i know that i'm in the minority here but i really like albert brooks. i've always found him really funny. so i watched "mother" last night and found it mildly amusing. he plays a middle-aged man that decides to move back in with his mother - played by debbie reynolds - because he believes all the problems with the women in his life stem from his relationship with his mother. could be comedy gold, especially with someone like reynolds playing mom, but instead it's only mildly amusing.

Last of the Mohicans

First time I had ever seen it. Good battle scenes, but I didn't go for the Stowe/DDL love storyline. Magua was great, but I really wish I could have seen a showdown between him and DDL. The battle to end the 2nd act was great, and the finale felt kind of small compared to it.

Still pretty awesome.

3.5/5

Checked out Oldboy based on some of the reviews here. A compelling movie, well done, but  .

Quite possibly the most insane movie I've seen.

This is an enteraining, beautifully-photographed movie. And it holds up well, unlike Dances With Wolves.

Hamlet 2

Silly comedy about a bad film actor that becomes a high school drama teacher. What a great little gem this movie is. It's a farce, so some of the material doesn't work. But I laughed out loud several times. Highly recommended.
Thanks to recommendations from this thread, I started watching Steve Coogan's "I'm Alan Partridge." Hilarious. Fans of British comedy will like this. The laugh track is horrible. But Coogan is a brilliant comic.

50 Dead Men Walking

Another movie about Ireland and the IRA. But its a really good one, almost as good as In the Name of the Father. Jim Sturgess flashes some real potential star power. I'd like to see more roles for him. Ben Kingsley also excellent altho a full head of hair distracted me.

Charlie Wilson's War

Meh..... Hanks and Hoffman were fun together but other than that.....
I have this on my DVR, but only because Hoffman's in it. Hanks and Roberts do not appeal to me.
Roberts is an afterthought. Hanks is actually pretty good. I liked this a lot.
I like Hanks, but he and Roberts appear in too many large films. They are a bit overexposed. And I don't think Roberts is a good actor.

Watched Dear Zachary after following the movie draft. Certainly a powerful topic for a doc, but the filmmaker made some odd choices that took away from the topic of his friend's murder and the investigation that followed. Making the still pictures "talk" felt more like a Morgan Spurlock move than something that should be used in this type of film.

Black Water

Open Water with a crocodile instead of sharks. Obviously there were smarter choices of survival to be made than the ones the character's went with, but I really liked that the film pulled no punches. Some of the croc effects are a little hokey, others work surprisingly well. One of the better giant crocodile movies you can find, and no stupid 30 foot cgi crocodile effects.

3.5/5

Lions for Lambs - I enjoyed the movie, it had great pacing and was a gripping drama.

Halloween II (Zombies Directors cut on BD) - Insane. Just flat out violent, relentless horror. I am a huge Halloween fan and own all of the movies except the flat out dreadful hunk of crap that is Halloween Busta Rymes as I call it which was the follow up to Halloween H2O. I was throughly impressed with Zombies re-imaging of the original classic and now I am equally impressed at his completely new vision for Halloween II. You can feel Michael Myers rage in this one like no other Halloween film and this is one of the very best entries in the entire series.

Facing Ali

Another sad reminder that the glory days of boxing are behind us. A lot of these guys took way too many shots to the head during their career. When We Were Kings was more entertaining, but lots of good stuff here.

The Hurt Locker

I was a little hesitant to watch this because of all the good critical reviews. I thought It was going to be one of those films that was dramatically good but a poor excuse for a war movie - you know: all talking, no action. Also, its set in Iraq, which I also do not like as a war movie setting. Finally it was directed by a woman. No offense, but not my gender of choice for a war movie.

I was wrong.

This is one of the finest war movies I have ever seen. Just fantastic. The drama works, Iraq works and the direction is incredible.

Whatever is keeping you from renting this now, just stop.

I second this. Best modern war movie I've ever seen.

Great movie. Although I challenge anyone to find a more disturbing 30 minutes of film than the last 30 minutes of this movie. Just... wrong.

Oh... caught most of It Could Get Loud last night. Really liked it- doc with a loose theme centered on the electric guitar, but really about 3 musicians' history and use of it: Jack White, The Edge, Jimmie Page (three generations of guitar players). Combined old footage, interview (live and audio), and a head-to-head-to-head between the three in a sound-studio, talking and playing about their music and techniques with each other. Well made visually and narratively- easily could've gotten bogged down in guitar-tech/history specifics, but kept it flowing nicely with personal anecdotes. Thought the director did a great job getting these guys to open up. Some great live footage and fantastic getting to see the awe on Edge and White's faces when Page starts playing and showing them how to play certain songs/riffs. Leitmotif: attack it with absolute conviction. Got my own creative juices inspired by this film... :lmao:
Never heard of that movie...sounds good.

Finally got around to watching Inglourious Basterds a couple weeks ago.

I was left with an overwhelming feeling of MEH. It almost felt like a collection of unrelated scenes rather than a coherent whole.

Really looking forward to seeing this one.

Michael Bay haters will enjoy this:My buddy at Industrial Light and Magic hates the guy. She says he is a total #####.
Not a Bay hater but totally believable. Anyone who splices 3 angles a second is going to be an incredible micro-manager to work with. No wonder the Transformer budgets are so high trying to keep him, Shia, and Fox working with everyone. The ego factor must be incredible.I know we've discussed this a bit recently, but I really enjoy the Rock. Bad Boys was decent. Armageddon is a very watchable turd of a movie.Seems like he finalized his "formula" with Armageddon.Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys 2, The Island, Transformers, and Transformers 2 seem like they have the exact same scenes with different characters and context.I gotta think that this guy would get a lot less hate if he had the ability to make a 90 minute movie rather than the overproduced 2 1/2 hour spectacles he seems committed too.I was all about Bruckheimer's collaborations until Don Simpson's death in 1996. Jerry's been making more money and bigger movies, but the quality has been downhill sense.

Going to be watching these two in the next couple of days. For whatever reason I have a lot more patience with the "reboots" of the horror movies than I do with all the action/sci-fi ones that come out. I enjoyed what Zombie did to the first Halloween and am interested to see this one. The only recent one that I haven't enjoyed on some level is the newest Friday the 13th. I think it's just the seemingly lack of options in the horror genre that brings me to these. I'd rather watch these than the countless asian horror remakes that are horrible or the crap like Saw 18.

Kinda curious on opinions on this: What was the last really good (original) horror movie to come out?

I take it your talking American here?Favorite foreign was {REC}, American I'd have to think about.

ETA: ;) Just looked through about 2000 Netflix ratings I had, nothing original stood out. Sad.

Yeah, talking American made horror movies. There have been quite a few foreign ones that I have liked - Audition, Tale of Two Sisters, The Orphanage, along with others. The closest thing that I came up with was 28 Days Later, but even that movie broke down at the end for me.

One of the most powerful documentaries I have ever seen in my life. I'll not soon forget this one.

House of a 1000 corpses and Devils Rejects were brutal...wanted to take a shower after those......The Ring was fantastic...but a *** remake....it has been a while since a good American horror flick.

A Perfect Getaway

About 20 minutes into this, I did not know if I could make it through. Sometimes these types of movies are just too creepy and unsettling for me to watch, especially in the last 5-10 years. But I bore with it and altho I saw the "twists" coming a mile away, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. A very solid film with way above average performances, great cinematography and fun narrative, with an exciting resolution, in an old school kind of way.

I say this with the preface that I love action movies. Sure, I love a great independent drama more than anyone. But Die Hard, Predator, The Matrix...these are all very entertaining movies. But with Bay, you have this subtle, insidious underlying streak of crass. Bay is an expert director - there's no doubt. His skill is unquestioned. But I wasn't surprised to hear that Bay is a tool. After all, most of his movies are tainted by a smear of ugliness. In most good action movies there's a little bit of boyish enthusiasm. Bay's demeanor is more sarcastic and jaded.

As a big fan of the horror genre, I think that modern horror is in a real dead period artistically. Movies like Hostel, Night of 1,000 Corpses, etc. use blood and gore in lieu of real terror. There are people that hated The Blair Witch Project, but that was a textbook lesson in suspense. If I had to pick one horror movie made in the last decade that was original and truly terrifying, it'd be Audition.

I love 28 Days Later, but isn't that British? If we're talking just American horror, you have a much tougher task. I think the Japanese and Europeans do horror better than Americans.

House of a 1000 corpses
Awful. Horrible movie.
 So terrible.
I hate that movie. Ugly and pointless. Can anyone name a great American horror film from the last 10 years? Something that even comes close to John Carpenter's "The Thing"?
The 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake
I enjoyed that. But a remake doesn't get many points for originality.

Moon

Well-done , low budget scifi. Probably closer to 2001 than any other film I can think of. Intelligent script and lots of creepy/phillip dickish scenes. Not really my type of movie overall, but a winning effort, accessible to me as well as those more inclined to this sort of thing. A bit protracted and self-indulgent at times (look at me I'm a indy lowbudget scifi), but solid overall and I recommend it solidly.

3.89/5 stars (but definitely higher for fans of the genre)

Halloween 2:

Watched this last night. While I liked Zombie's take on the first Halloween, I didn't like this one very much. The first stayed within the slasher realm, but still attempted to give us insight into why Mr. Myers would go on his rampage. The kid who played the young Michael was great in the first one too. While you feel his rage and it begins to scare you, Zombie still did a decent job of keeping it under control.

Now enters the 1st one, just like the first Halloween sequel, which starts off right after the end of the killings. While I am not a prude when it comes to gore, the first 10-15 mins were almost enough to get me to turn it off - seeing the carnage of the first one, and there is a car accident at the start that made my stomach churn. Then the movie starts getting weird with the dream sequences and flashbacks as Zombie attempts to get us into the mind of Michael and Laurie. No need for this crap except to get Rob's wife in the movie yet again.

The other thing that bothered me - Zombie did a good job of reigning in the rage on the first one, but let it out in spades in this one. You can feel the anger and rage oozing off the screen so much that it distracts you from Michael and starts to make you wonder about what issues Mr. Zombie has to make this movie.

Long story short, while I liked the first Halloween I found this one to be a disgusting mess.
