DVD collection (no blu-rays yet), in no particular order & from memory (might be omissions)Master & Commander
This is a movie that I cannot wait to watch with my son. He's about to turn seven. I'm thinking he'll be ready within a year or so.
Movies at sea are something that bore me terribly. Not sure why. Ive never watched M&C, Perfect Storm, or White Squall, etc specifically because of thisCabin Boy might be my favorite movie at sea
I can't say enough good things about Master and Commander. Now, it's certainly a family film. So you have to judge it with that caveat. But good adventure films are not easy to find.

Definitely. And Irreversible isn't a horror movie, but it is a bad movie.
In a previous post you listed Irreversible as a horror movie. It was definitely disturbing (####ed up beyond belief is a more apt description) but I agree that it should not fall in the horror genre.

You're right. That's confusing that I contradicted myself. I looked up a list of the best French horror films to see if I had seen any of them. The list had many horror sub-genres, and Irreversible fell under one of those sub-genres.

I think this movie is fun if kind of regress a little and remember the sense of wonder you felt watching these movies as a kid. Not great by any definition, but entertaining.

It's an interesting experiment trying to define movies into genres. For me horror movies have an antagonist like a Jason, Freddy, Blair Witch, [REC] etc. But I am not sure how to define an Iichi the Killer or Irreversible type film although "Orgiastic violence porn" comes to mind.

Yes, this isn't easy. I always defined horror films as extremely violent stories that have a terrifying killer.

I get what youre saying as those are kind of the most famous horror characters, but horror definitely goes outside that. What else could you call Rob Zombie's movies (1000 Corpses, Devil's Rejects), the Saw series, etc.

Appaloosa

I haven't even finished this rote Western with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortenson yet. But I just had to say that Renée Zellweger is freaking weird-looking. She could be the most unattractive romantic interest that I've ever seen in any movie.
:suds:  :goodposting: Pretty much ruined the entire film for me. I'd shoot myself before fighting another guy, let alone my best friend, over her.
Totally agree with you guys on this one.

Nice collection, Kenny.Where The Buffalo Roam

This is a very underrated movie. I prefer this to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I'm a big fan of Hunter S. Thompson's books, and I think Bill Murray did a good job of playing Thompson.

Almost Famous

A critic said that this movie loves music, and I agree. So many movies about music don't seem to capture the qualities that we love about music. When the band and the groupies sing Tiny Dancer in the bus, there's a scene that really captures love of music in a way that many films cannot.

The Game

There are only a handful of directors working today where I am guaranteed to see all their new movies. David Fincher is one of them.

Zellweger still boggles my mind as attractive, but from what I remember she was almost not even in this movieShe had no factor on my feelings of this movie, and I liked this movie a good bit. Westerns these days are few and far between, but this one had the sense that you can still make a great western without being a shoot em up.

I liked Appaloosa

A lot less, but you should have thrown it out at some point.Mostly though, I just wanted to quote Dumb & Dumber since you own such a ridiculous DVD

My eclectic collectionShakes the Clown - more useable good lines than any other great comedy I know

Greg the Bunny IFC Movies Parodies - if you haven't seen this, you need to

Mr. Show (all episodes) - these have held up exceptionally well - some of the best comedy I have ever seen

Pee-Wee's Playhouse (all episodes) - I bought these for my kids when he was little, but really it was for us - we still watch them with his 5 yr. old sister

Ben Stiller Show - early Fox sketch comedy, like any of these shows it has its weak moments but some pretty dam good ones too - great cast with Bob Odenkirk, Andy Quick, and Janeane Garofalo. Stiller as Bono with the Partridge Family twist - playing at the bar mitzvah is good stuff.

Waiting for Fernwood 2Nite to come out on dvd.

As you can see, I smoked copious amounts of ganja in college when I purchased most of these, maybe 20 or so are from the last 4 years. My collection is easily 2/3 of what it used to be, I tend to recommend something to a friend only to never see it again. I've bought Donnie Darko at least 4 times.

If anyone is ever down for a:

Road House/ Red Dawn/ Over the Top/ Next of Kin Saturday afternoon.

You just let this guy know.

Finally got around to watching Public Enemies. While Depp was his usual, just didn't enjoy the movie. Was sort of meh. Other than Dillinger and Bale's charachter I had no idea who anyone else was in the movie. Terrible charachter development. I was disappointed.

Lots of good stuff there, by the way. You and I are one of the few that liked Punch Drunk Love.
 Not only did I like it, but I think it's the defining love story from the past 20 years and only gets more relevant as time goes by. Everybody these days is a freak about something, few films still seem to want to be honest about it.
I've only seen it once, but I liked it. PT Anderson is one of my favorites.

I'd list my DVD collection, but it would be an embarassment. I probably have 1500 or more, but I usually do not buy a DVD with the intention of watching it multiple times. At least half of my collection was purchased for $4 or less - for the purpose of having fresh, new (to me) films to watch at my leisure. And since I pay roughly the equivalent as I would for a rental. And there is also the HD-DVD section. When they lost out to BluRay, I loaded up with about the entire catalog at around $3-4 each.Lots of classics and lots of clunkers. For example, I just saw "The Amateurs" last night on HD-DVD. Horrible. But I had never seen it and buying the HD was as cheap as renting the regular. Both I would consider a waste of time.

I really recommend gohastings.com as a resource for used DVD. You can find all kinds of great ones and tons of ones you have never seen, but may be curious about. And I usually end up paying around $3 each including shipping.

Another thing I like about getting them so cheap, is that I freely give them away after viewing to a friend who I think may enjoy it.

Another problem with listing everything is that it would take a day or two to make up the list and I just do not have the time. Maybe I could do a row at a time. Or HDDVD only, or the 100 DVDs I'd save in case of a fire...

Never saw the RZ movies and don't intend to. I did see the original Saw and that dude qualifies as a Freddy/Jason type. Being supernatural is not necessary but as a killer his means were beyond anything natural or realistic in any fashion (perception of supernatural) so I have no problem putting him in that category. The rapist in Irreversible or Buffalo Bill (silence of the lambs) are not horror movie villains in my opinion.I guess all genres can be parsed and subdivided to death.

Three Kings was set during a war and period in time that was much different from the war where Hurt Locker is set in. I don't think it was any less believable.
Blowing up helicopters with footballs strapped with C-4 pretty much removes any and all plausibility from the TK side of the equation.
lol. good point. I forgot about that.
I believe this movie. A dude could blow up a helicopter with a football and not hurt himself, 'cause he did take careful aim, and knew something about the levels of gravitivity and polarity. I believe the #### could happen
Great Hollywood Shuffle reference.

I wouldn't go that far but I definitely enjoyed PDL. I am not sure why so many people dislike it.

Just as an aside, since there was discussion of DVD collections, I have so many that I had to eventually get rid of the plastic cases. I keep all of mine in those leather notebook type thingies, with holders that hold 4 to a page. I have 2 full notebooks. It's a lot.

Good point. When a guy like Sandler steps out from his stereotype it confuses people and people generally don't like things that confuse them. Not to say that Sandler is a good dramatic actor (in Reign Over Me he was very meh IMO) but he nailed that role in PDL and was comedic enough for my taste. That movie deserved more props.

I think a lot of people dont even know Where The Buffalo Roam exists, but its much better than Fear & LoathingThe Game is awesome. Despite the storyline and how it ends, every time I watch it I like it just as much as the first time.

Almost Famous is probably in my Top 5 movies of the 2000's. Cameron Crowe almost always has great soundtracks. Unbelievable ensemble cast performance, with a story I think most people can relate to in their younger days and/or the 70's despite never being a journalist and/or alive then. Kate Hudson, PSH, and Billy Crudup all at the top of their game. Superbly demonstrates the fun, spontaneity, and adventure of growing up, meeting new people, and making new relationships, as well as learning more about one's self and maturing (and all of this with multiple characters in the movie). The best "music" movie ever, and its not really close IMO

Reign Over Me was a little too absurd for me to handle. Cheadle handled his role much better than Sandler who seemed confused by what exactly he was trying to convey.

Surprisingly (or not), my 3 favorite Sandler movies last decade were all his dramas: Spanglish, Punch Drunk Love, and Reign Over Me (in that order probably, although I liked ROM more than some it seems)

Funny People is really the only comedy that is remotely close

Really?Ok, Click I've never seen so somebody must have left it at my place. Rent is still sealed, I probably got that for a gift for someone and never gave it to them. I haven't seen that either.America's Sweethearts I used to watch with my girlfriend in high school, one of the first 3 DVDs I purchased.(Fight Club, Ferris Bueller, America's Sweethearts) My memory is pretty good for a stoner.Pulse was a novel concept, but I think someone else bought that and left it here as well. I liked the Signal better.

Making my list last night reminded me that some ####### out there has my Snatch, Memento, Rounders, SLC Punk, and Red Dragon dvds!

My Bloody Valentine

Don't remember much about the original, but this was not the worst horror movie I have ever seen. I thought it squeaked out Halloween II (retool) and was a little more interesting (I said little, not a lot). Somewhat suspenseful and chock-full-o-gore. I saw all the scenes made for 3-D, but not sure it made the movie any better. 2.75/5

Jaws 3D was the best 3D movie evah!!!!

I too thought this was a pretty cool little remake. I've never seen the original. This had all the elements for an enjoyable popcorn munching experience for me, and I saw the 2d version as well.

I didn't think this was a bad movie but I also didn't think there was that much to it. I might need to watch it again.
SLC Punk and Glory Daze turned me from wrangler wearing farm boy to a green haired semi-pro skate punk in my early teens.Of course now I've regressed to a tie wearing, clean cut, insurance man. But it is fun to reminisce.Glory Daze featured a putrid Ben Affleck, a great Sam Rockwell, and the best post-hardcore, pre-emo, punk soundtrack to date.Sad days watching all my skater friends go the way of the hippy our Junior and Senior years of high school. I didn't quit rocking my NOFX T-shirts and Zero jeans until I hit college.
