This isn't the level of hatred I have for musicals, but honestly don't think I've ever loved any sports movie. Certainly can't think of one that would show up on a top 500 movie list for me. Because it's been so highly praised here, I am going to watch The Damned United this weekend, and then stay away from the sports movies for a long time.
Rocky? The hero doesn't even win in the end.
Never seen the whole thing - I am pretty sure it's one that's on the list I just made.

I have come to the conclusion that I don't like sports movies in general, and baseball movies specifically. This movie plays like Major League with an attempt at some sexiness. I guess I don't like baseball enough to find those parts funny or Susan Sarandon good looking enough to find the other parts sexy.

Sports movies are often riddled with cliches. Bull Durham hasn't aged well, and the movie has some really bad dialogue. The Damned United is excellent.
Oh yeah. To me it felt exactly like I was watching Major League again, except for it was worse because this movie was trying to be more adult or serious. The actual baseball scenes were horrible.

I think all of Tarantino's films are extremely self-indulgent, and that doesn't bother me. Tarantino makes films that he loves to watch. It just so happens that I agree with him about what is interesting and what isn't.
Me too pretty much, but please tell me that you found Death Proof to be completely insufferable.
 Worst movie I saw last year.

QT should be ashamed.

I guess everyone screws up sometimes
I take it you don't see a lot of movies? Tarantino's weakest films are still better than most of the #### Hollywood serves up.
I agree but Death Proof is the exception (and I do watch a lot of movies...too many probably). It started off quite well but then went completely off the rails. Tarantino tried to show the world that he could write for women the same way he writes for men, realized he was failing miserably and said "Look! A car chase! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!" To be fair Zoe Bell (I think it was her) is one mad, and bad ###, stunt woman.

However, and I know we disagree on this one, IMO Death Proof was horrible. Easily among the least enjoyable movies I have seen in quite some time.

I didn't like it much either, but it turns amazing if you watch it after Planet Terror. Now that's a ####ty movie.

1) Bull Durham was made before Major League. 2) Skip: You guys. You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!

Larry: Lollygaggers!

Skip: Lollygaggers.

and finally point 3 of my argument:

Crash Davis: Well, I believe in the soul, the ####, the #####, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

What about the original The Longest Yard KP?What's the complaint there?
Never seen that either. I think I realized awhile ago that I never seem to love sports movies, so I probably haven't seen as many as most around here. It's not to the level that I hate them, but I can't remember seeing won that I thought was great. People ##### about Titanic - "well, you know the boat's going to sink". Also works for probably 95% of sports movies - you watch Miracle, and you know WTF is going to happen at the end. I just always find them meh b/c like jdog stated, they are full of cliches, and they are predictable.

I would put The Longest Yard very close to the top of my all time best sports movies list. I am having trouble coming up with one I enjoy more. Rocky, which is in most ways not cliche, comes close. I was serious about Horse Feathers too, but as a Marx Brothers movie it has obvious appeal for other reasons, ditto for M*A*S*H. They're both great but not truly movies centered around sports.I think TLY is definitely worth checking out as a true sports comedy. Although I think Major League is hysterical so what do I know?ETA: Not sure I see many similarities between Major League and Bull Durham.

Watched 28 Weeks Later last night.

It is a decent addition to the horror/zombie genre, but not nearly as good as the first one. For lack of a better description, I just thought the movie was 'ugly'. I guess I didn't like the fact that the kids were involved so much in the movie or that the makers of the movie kept trying to hard to make the dad seem like an uber-zombie or something. Slightly above average for the genre, but I don't think I'd watch it again.
I look at 28 Days/Weeks later like I do Alien/Aliens. The first movie is a horror film and the second is action flick. Hard to really compare the two since they're different genres.
Except in the latters case the sequel is better than the original.
I agree with the minister here. Alien is such a dramatically different movie than Aliens it is really unfair to compare them. Aliens is a great action movie and is more humorous and engaging (as well as being one of the most quotable movies ever) but Alien is one of the most terrifying movies I have ever seen. Alien is a straight laced horror drama with no comic relief (ala Bill Paxton) and it creates a mood that is unparalleled in the genre.Plus you have Ridley Scott v James Cameron.

I hesitate to make a choice as to which was the better film. It appears IMDB is deadlocked too, both get an 8.5 on over 165,000 votes.
They mostly come at night. Mostly.

I don't think anybody sees the end coming in Slap Shot. Best sports movie of all time, but Hoosiers, Hoop Dreams, Caddyshack, Raging Bull, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams are all very good as well.

What about Brian's Song? If you don't cry during this film you may not have a soul.

Raging Bull?

Hoosiers?

Slap Shot?

Chariots of Fire?

The Bad News Bears?

Breaking Away?

When We Were Kings? One of my all time favorite documentaries.

I really enjoyed the first part of Death Proof, the second part not so much. The second part was just kinda all over the place, full of past tense dialogue that wasn't very interesting and a car chase that goes on for too long. I'd say it's easily Tarantino's worst film, but it's still a decent flick; and FAR from being one of the least enjoyable films over the last while.

Just saw Extract. Holy crap is that a bad movie! Nothing redeeming about it at all. It wasn't even crappy enough to enjoy as a poorly made movie. Just a complete and utter eye of time

First part was fine. For the second eternity I would rather bite a chalk board for however long it ran than watch it again.

Not a big sports movie fan, but there are some good ones.

My favorite ones dont even really focus on sports but a sport is a key part of the movie, and thats probably part of the reason I dont like sports movies all that much. He Got Game is probably my favorite sports movie, and I doubt many others would say the same thing. Same goes for my 2nd favorite, Rounders....The Wrestler probably isnt too far off of that, same with White Men Cant Jump.

If were going "sports" comedies, it starts and ends with Kingpin and The Big Lebowski for me

Just because the characters in the movie played a sport doesn't make it a sports movie.

The Hurt Locker...ironically I watched this last night and there was some banter about it today. Thought it was very good, not great. I thought it tailed off over the last 45 minutes or so, until the suicide bomber and ending scenes which I liked a lot. Despite not much character development, I thought Renner did a great job and gives you the viewer a great feel for his character despite limited screentime when there wasnt action. Ithink as a whole, it wouldve been better if they had a few more, and longer scenes, back at base in the first half to allow more of the defusing scenes to be spread later into the movie, as some scenes such as fleeing off base to find the kid's killer were just ludicrous (even for a thrill seeker like him). Wouldve allowed more character development, especially for the other 2 guys, which both felt like they could have been even more interesting characters; while at the same time cutting out some of the fat from the 2nd half. Thought Renner's BA nomination was well deserved. Ive still only seen 4 of the BP nominees from last year (THL, Avatar, Basterds, Up), so while I dont think I wouldve picked this for BP (probably go Basterds), Im not sure I have a big beef with it winning either. That said, Cameron definitely shouldve won best director over Bigelow.....8.2/10
Hi. That is coincidence, not irony. Carry on.
:clyde: Ironically, I posted that after a long day of work

I didn't include docs in the equation - I liked all these movies as well.

I'll try a few more and mix them into my list. Scanning over the lists here and in the other thread I posted, a lot of them seem to be comedy movies, which is always hit or miss with me. Kingpin is a top 5 comedy movie for me, but I don't think it's a sports movie. I'll mix in a couple of the 'serious' ones and report back.

I don't believe there hasn't been mention of the best football movie of the bunch yet: Varsity Blues

Everything after the car crash (I'll grant an exception for the first 30 seconds of the hood stunt but that's about it) and frankly it took a little too long to even get to the crash but that's nitpicking.

Hard to detect sarcasm via text, but I find it hard to believe you think Varsity Blues is the best football movie ever. Friday Night Lights IMO was much better than it, Remember the Titans and The Program to a lesser degree. Of course there is Playmakers. Havent seen We Are Marshall or The Express but both of those seem to be regarded as above average.Might be more comedy oriented and less time on football, but I thought Jerry Maguire, The Replacements, and Little Giants were all good. Any Given Sunday is a big time guilty pleasure.

Watched it with my 14 year old son. I only remembered the language and he had heard it before so no problem.

Forgot about the breast exam bit :penalty: Oh well, he got to see a b 0 0 bie

At 14, he's likely already seen a ton of boobies. See, there's this thing called the internet...

Been awhile since I've seen Major League, but as I was watching it I was thinking:-- wild crazy rookie pitcher-- love interest trying to keep said pitcher from being so wild-- token older player who's been around -- token ethnic player who believes in his silly curses/rituals-- down and out team complete with wacky mascots-- lame wacky manager trying to keep it all togetherMaybe ML was ripping off a bit from BD, but I stand by my statement. Bull Durham plays like an adult Major League.

I just stumbled across M P and the Holy Grail on IFC. I have my percocet, playing an online poker tournament, and I fart in your general direction. Life is good.

Made it through 30 minutes of Shooter which was 25 minutes too long. LOL at Marky Mark with a pony tail.

Tivoed Collateral. I remember it being ok.
