Cider House Rules -- I just got done reading the book and liked it very much, so I got the movie from Netflix. I know its trite and arrogant to say the movie can't match the book, but this screenplay was written by Irving also so I had high hopes. Ummm....this movie got an Academy Award nomination? Just curious, did others like this movie and I am just jaded because of the book, or did the movie actually suck as bad as I think?

Serenity: One of the great tragedies of the entertainment world was how Fox handled and screwed over Joss Whedon and his sci-fi Western show Firefly. While the initial ratings numbers weren't great, Fox did not give it time to grow and gain an audience.( X-Files was pretty low rated for its first couple of years) that was a big mistake. Firefly ( and the 16 or so episodes that came out) came across as a really fresh television show that a fan of either sci-fi or westerns could enjoy. Set in a another universe settled by humans, Firefly deals with the crew of the Serenity and the adventures they incur. The characterization was great, the action good and the dialogue top notch. Joss Whedon did a great job of creating a real universe with nice characterization. Fortunately for fans of the show... Whedon was able to tie up any loose ends with the movie Serenity. For fans of the show and sci-fi fans in general...this movie does not disappoint. For a movie about a television show that lasted 16 episodes; it was really well done.

Thinking about moving "Donnie Darko" to the top of the list at netflix, is this a good movie?
A must-rent. Dark, full of metaphors, moody, and thought-provoking.
[nigel'schristmashint!] I need to own this film. [/nigel'schristmashint!]
The only thing I wanted for X-Mas this year was Mike Judge's "Idiocracy," and I am getting it
I will add this to the vast list of films I need to check out.

Just finished Scarface. I thought it was decent, but not legendary. I know it is just a sign of the times, but I found it interested all of the major characters except one who was supposed to be Cuban was played by a Caucasian. Mildly distracting. Finally seeing "say hello to my little friend" was well worth it.

I think this movie's overrated and ugly to look at. It's fun in a campy sort of way, though.

Terrible, but in a good way, DePalma flick. Robert Loggia's accent is priceless. I crack up every time I see this film. It's ridiculous at every turn.

Obviously it doesn't compare to the quality of if this movie was made today, but not being a student of similar movies put out at the same time, how does it compare. I didn't find it significantly more "campy" than Godfather, personally. I found them to be a similar struggle to get through.

I haven't seen it, so I am pretty geeked :nerd: about it.

race with the devil - hybrid horror/action genre film... peter fonda, warren oates and wives are on vacation in motor home, when they accidentally witness a human sacrifice by a satanic cult and then are discovered... and the race is on!

plot was pretty unbelievable at points, but genuinely creepy, hadn't seen this before...

always liked warren oates in movies like bring me the head of alfredo garcia...

#3 on my Kurosawa list was Ikiru from an FBG recommendation. Very interesting movie, unlike the other's I've seen so far. It's the story of an old guy who gets the news that he has cancer and only has a few months to live. He realizes that he has wasted the past 30 years in a dead-end job not making a difference in his or anyone elses life. It's a theme that's been done since many times and probably was novel for it's time. I was surprised how Americanized the society is at the time with the music and party atmosphere. The movie was very slow paced, especially the leads delivery. Good movie but at the bottom of the list of Kurosawa's films for me so far.

I have Seven Samurai home and will check it out soon. Looking forward to being blown away. Hope I'm not too hyped.

Ranking so far:

Rashomon

Throne of Blood

Ikiru

Wife and I finally got around to Cinderella Man last night. Very enjoyable movie. Crowe was excellent, Giamatti was his usual fantastic self, and the dude who played Max Baer (Craig Bierko) was freakin' incredible. Zellweger, on the other hand, made me wish that Jimmy Braddock would practice his "pop, pop, BANG!" combo on her annoying accent face.

Anywho, highly recommend the film if only to see Bierko kick A as Max Baer.

The Great Escape -- I'd never seen this before. It was awesome. I'm sure most everyone's seen it, but in case you haven't, you DEFINITELY should.

"kontroll" - hungarian flim shot totally in the budapest subway system. looks great. kinda interesting plot. kind of weird but that's the magyar way...

"history of violence" - viggo (for the wife) and maria bello (for me). i win! plotted well enough, as you'd expect from cronenberg. acted well enough by the leads. wife and i liked it.

Dead Man's Chest - I liked it. Not as good as the first Pirates movie, but good enough to have me looking forward to the next one.

I thought it was good but a little bit too long. IT's more of a "setup for the next movie" than original was and that might have caused a few people to not like it as much.

The Vanishing (The foreign version) - It was pretty good. Story of a guy whose gf disappears at a rest stop on their vacation, and his search for her abductor.

If you're a zombie movie fan, I'd recommend "Undead", which I caught on cable last night. Australian cheapie that's 3 parts zombie flick and 1 part acid-trip alien abduction movie.

Why didn't you like it?
I posted this earlier in this thread somewhere, but essentially it...just...kept...dragging...on...and...on...and...on.

By the time James Garner was roaring around the countryside on his motor scooter I wanted to cut off my left arm just to liven up the evening.

That's why.

Watched Green Street Houligans, at the recommendation of this thread. I put it on my Xmas list, was one of the better movies I've seen in the past few years. Even with a severely miscast Elijah Wood, I really liked this one.

Rewatched "The man who was´t there" . Very good movie, don´t know if it is drama or comedy, I laught quiet a view times. Freddy Riedenschneider and his speaches and the piano teacher always give me a laugh. I also like the quiet way/lethargy of telling the story.

You Me and Dupree- Funny enough for a rental  Plus. I got to see kate Hudson in HD
Really  When the wife and I finished that, I gave her crap about picking out such a bad movie. All the "funny" parts had already been shown in the previews.

Also watched Pulse with my daughter (the only other person in the family that likes scary movies). Thought it was bad as well.

Everything is Illuminated -- I liked this movie. Its about Elijah Wood going to the Ukraine to see a woman who may have saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Its funny and sad -- well done.

I thought it was hilarious that a couple stormed out of this film 15 minutes into it. IT'S CALLED A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, IDIOTS. That's like rejecting a porno because it has too much nudity

Watched Punch Drunk Love the other day. It was ok, Magnolia and Boogie Nights were better by a lot.
didn't realize it was the same Director.added it to my Queue.
By the way, fans of PT Anderson will be excited about his new film "There Will Be Blood." Gotta love Anderson teaming up with Daniel Day-Lewis. MORE INFO
Can't wait for this.
Same here. This is being released the same year as David Fincher's ZODIAC. Awww yeah. Two of my favorite directors.

Wood was awful, but this was a good flick.

Thank God Wes isn't coming out with anything other than an animated film. If all three of these guys came out with something too close together, I might implode.

Steve McQueen .... Capt. Hilts "The Cooler King" James Garner .... Flight Lt. Hendley "The Scrounger"

Richard Attenborough .... Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett "Big X"

James Donald .... Group Capt. Ramsey "The SBO"

Charles Bronson .... Flight Lt. Danny Velinski "The Tunnel King"

Donald Pleasence .... Flight Lt. Colin Blythe "The Forger"

James Coburn .... Flying Officer Louis Sedgwick "The Manufacturer"

I'm pretty sure Garner was the one racing around on the scooter when I wanted to start cutting. Regardless, it's a fantastic cast...they just acted in a really boring movie.
