The Island: Not bad, but it was hard to concentrate on the story while I was thinking about how much I want to #### Scarlett Johansson.

watched 40 Year Old Virgin last night. Thought it was very funny, but dragged on too long. Still well worth the rental cost.
Saw most of this last weekend but only got to the point where they were on the 20th date and she freaked b/c he wouldn't sleep with her. Wife and I hit the sack b/c we thought it dragged on too long as well. What happens after that? I assume he scores, but verification would be appreciated.

Saw Batman Begins last weekend. It was good, but I don't think it was nearly as good as the first one (with Jack Nicholson), although some people I know thought it was.

"Wake Up Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie"A nice little flick for those who were fans of the original. Champ's awkward declaration of love is worth the price of admission alone.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Entertaining. Ending is too over the top, but still okay.

Strangely, the more I watched it, the LESS attractive Angelina Jolie appeared to me. Especially her profile.

Maybe Brad Pitt turned me a little gay.
We just rented this, and I agree about Jolie. It just looks kind of strange when she's sitting with the shrink or playing "wife" at home. I think what it is is that she doesn't do "sultry." She's got the bod and the hot lips, but her idea of sexy seems to be a kind of raise-the-eyebrows with a "look at me" look. The whole movie was just a star vehicle for the two of them.We also rented Kingdom of Heaven recently, and I was less than impressed. A great battle scene at Jerusalem, but the plot and character development was very weak.

I saw American Beauty.  Great flick.  I was left wanting more in the end though.  Project Lester Burnham life if the Nazi dad doesn't kill him.  Maybe Carolyn does it when she comes home?
First time to see it? I deem it one of the best films of the '90s.
Yep. I thought it was a 2000 movie.

Spanglish - awful

Anchorman - overall pretty bad, with a few laughs here and there

40 yr. old Virgin - Hilarious
I think we share same tastes in movies. I fell asleep during spanglish months ago and thought it was okay, then watched the rest of it on HBO and wondered what kind of glue i was sniffing to even consider that movie watchable. it was horrendous.anchorman sucked so bad i turned it off.

but 40 year old virgin was excellent. dragged on a bit too long, but all in all very well done. very funny.

So is it actually worth watching the ending? I can't ask anyone what happened in the office here b/c I work with a bunch of computer geeks. I'm quite certain most (if not all) of them would have left the theatre half way through crying as this flick probably hits waaay to close to home for them.

No. the ending is very predictable and drags on way way way too long. they get married, have sex and then launch into an idiotic dance number with the entire cast doing their version of "Aquarious". In fact, I kind of wish I missed that part myself. The first 2/3 of the movie are the only redeeming parts, so you're good.

That sounds terrible. Thanks for saving me both time and $. Have a good holiday season!

You know how i know youre gay? Because you take advice from other dudes.Seriously though, the movie is worth the rental for the deleted scenes alone, not to mention the movie was hilarious.

Zatoichi, The Blind Swordsman (2003 remake).  Great job. Well done. In fact, this was the second such remake, with the original actor recast in the lead role(1989).

I watched Harold and Kumar go to White Castle recently.Overall not the greatest flick but worth watching for a few great laughs. There is a montage of Kumar hanging out with a bag of weed that is a Fn riot.

I watched one last night...whew! Boys and girls, I present to you all Havoc!

Anne Hathaway and Bijou Phillips get naked a lot. Since I was unable to concentrate on the movie after watching the nude scenes, I'll let Richard Roeper's review speak for me. Very good movie - not a date movie, but a great movie all the same.

Ten years later, a movie that was worth waiting for

December 8, 2005

BY RICHARD ROEPER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

In 1995, New Line Cinema spent $150,000 for "The Powers That Be," an original script about wealthy, white teenagers in Los Angeles who talk, dress and act like gang-bangers and think they're pretty tough -- until they encounter the real thing.

The purchase made big news, not so much for the intriguing storyline but because the screenplay had been written by Jessica Kaplan, a 17-year-old student at Crossroads High School in Santa Monica, Calif.

(This was years before 13-year-old Nikki Reed co-wrote and co-starred in the acclaimed independent film "thirteen." Apparently we're only a few years away from a 6-year-old selling a screenplay based on his addiction to juice boxes.)

I remember reading about the sale of the script and thinking that "The Powers That Be" sounded like a provocative look at white kids who embrace the music, the fashion and even the speech patterns of black gangsta rappers, never realizing how ridiculous they look and sound as they appropriate a culture that has nothing to do with their actual lives. Whether it's Brentwood or the North Shore, 1995 or 2005, pampered Caucasians pretending to be ghetto-hard is a social reality worth examining in film form. (And no, "Malibu's Most Wanted" doesn't count.)

I liked the idea of a movie that showed these kids getting in way over their heads. "The Powers That Be" sounded like a movie worth waiting for.

And waiting.

Creating 'Havoc'

Like 95 percent of screenplays that are picked up, "The Powers That Be" was soon mired in development limbo.

According to the trades and updates provided by Internet Movie Database and Yahoo Movies, actors such as Ethan Hawke and Christian Slater were under consideration for the male lead -- a white kid named "Havoc" who runs a "gang" in a wealthy Los Angeles neighborhood. At one point a screenwriter named Stephen Gaghan was brought in to rewrite the story. (Gaghan would go on to win the Academy Award for his adaptation of "Traffic." He is the writer and director of the political thriller "Syriana," maybe the best movie I've seen so far this year.)

As the years passed, ingenues such as Kate Bosworth and Mandy Moore were mentioned as possibles to play Allison, Havoc's girlfriend. There was much Internet talk about the sex scenes in the script, including a raunchy group encounter involving Allison and her best friend and some Latino gang members.

After seven years, New Line put the project in turnaround, meaning they were giving up on actually filming it. The screenplay was picked up by MDP Worldwide and was retitled "Havoc."

In June 2003, a small plane crashed into an apartment building in Los Angeles. Among the five victims was a 24-year-old woman who had been in the plane, piloted by her uncle

The woman was Jessica Kaplan, the former high school student who had written "The Powers That Be."

Coming soon -- to home video

Production on "Havoc" finally began in the fall of 2003, with the role of Allison going to Anne Hathaway of "Princess Diaries" fame. This announcement set the Internet on fire, with much talk among fanboys about Hathaway's multiple nude scenes.

With the titillation meter at 10, with Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple in the director's chair, with a supporting cast that included such young stars as Bijou Phillips and Shiri Appleby, "Havoc" still sounded like one of the more provocative films in the pipeline -- but after the film was finished, it sat on the shelf for nearly two years.

Now, finally, "Havoc" is being released. Straight to home video.

I screened an advance copy of the unrated version of the movie -- which is now available in stores and via the Internet -- and I can't fathom why "Havoc" didn't merit a theatrical release. Kopple has delivered a gritty and troubling film that brings to life the original premise of Kaplan's screenplay. Hathaway is a million miles from her "Princess Diaries" persona as Allison, a whip-smart, perpetually bored teenager with absentee parents. She talks "street," she uses sex as a weapon -- and when her wannabe tough-guy boyfriend crumples after a harrowing encounter with a hard-core gang-banger, she plunges deep into the gang-banger's world. For the attention-starved Allison, it's just another edgy lark -- until she and her best friend find themselves in a hotel room with a half-dozen gang-bangers, seriously considering whether they should go through with an initiation that requires group sex.

What happens next is difficult to watch. What transpires beyond that hotel room rings true -- sadly true. "Havoc" isn't a perfect film, but in a year in which the likes of "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "The Pacifier" get nationwide releases and play on thousands of screens, it deserved to find an audience. That's where the DVD comes in.
You guys are missing the boat on this one. Anne Hathaway....NAKED! GREAT RACK....

Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy  Let me preface this by saying that I know nothing about the book, characters, or plot so I had no preconcieved notions of what the movie should be. that being said, I thought the effects were good, the performances were good ( especially Mos Def and Sam Rockwell) and the style of the movie was good ( with the frequent interludes into the Guide). I thought the plot was minimal but was ok with that. The Last StarFighter  I remember this movie to be alot more serious with more dire consequences in it when I was little. The computer special effects (while great for the time) aren't even on par with what the X-Box puts out. I think this move is one that they should look at for a remake. It wasn't a huge success and had an entertaining premise ( aliens use a video game to train and recruit people for a job in an interstellar war).

Watched "March of the Penguins" last night with the family. Wife and I loved it, 5 yr. old girl enjoyed it and asked a ton of questions, 3 yr. old boy's attention came and went.I haven't watched many nature documentaries, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I thought it was very well done. I'm looking forward to watching the extras tonight to see how they got some of the shots they captured.big

Kronk's New Groove :thumbdown:Wife bought this for me for Christmas because we enjoyed the original so much. But this one turned out to be your standard Disney cash grab. It's horrible. Don't even waste a rental on it for your kids.

Serenity.Meh.Probably would have been better had I watched Firefly before. As it was, it looked like a big budget made-for-TV movie.

Watched October Sky on the plane ride back from Vegas yesterday. It looked like a sure fire snoozer, so I hoped it would put me to sleep. It turned out to be pretty good. Actually got a little choked up at the end with the dad. Not a spoiler btw. It's pretty obvious.

I watched "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and thought it was a good movie just not scary which was what I expected. The drama in the courtroom was good as both sides states their cases which was interesting and makes the viewer think. Also watched "The Skeleton Key" which was also a decent movie worthy of a rental but again not a horror film. Several plot holes but nice acting and good setting saved the film.

Strange - I watched it last night too. I have no idea what I was expecting but that crapfest wasn't it.

Same here. I was expecting something along the lines of Independence Day, which was actually a decent flick. I really had a hard time finishing it, and did only out of principal.

After watching the series, I liked it even more. I recommend both."The Island" was pretty cheesy, but there is an over-the-top action sequence 3/4 the way through that makes it worth a rent.

I tend to think John Cusack = bad movie.
Hmm, I dunno, I like him. You seen High Fidelity?
Besides that, which everyone seems to bring up, what other "great movies" has he done? He's always the same, lame yutz.
You make a good point and I have to admit my like of him stems entirely from that one movie. But now, I guess you can add Must Love Dogs to that list, because I really liked him in it.

:hey: I liked War of the Worlds. I thought it was different, in that it didn't really have any sub-plots. It is what it is - a quest for survival. It is a simple action movie, nothing more, nothing less.

I didn't care much for the movie. Even by mindless summer fare standards it was pretty pedestrian. But Scarlett Johansson is off the charts hot and that definitely makes the movie watcheable. And someone asked earlier who liked "War of the Worlds." That would be me. I thought it was a great film and one of my favorites of 2005. But I will acknowledge having a strong Spielberg bias because I'm a huge fan of his work. And while I think Cruise is a nutjob I also think he's pretty darn good actor and I thought he was great in this film.

Well, dogs are actually a big part of the movie in a small way--they are in most scenes. If you like romantic comedies, I suggest you give it a whirl.

Spoilers for War of the Worlds below:First Half of War of the Worlds...A/A- Taut, tense thriller that had me on the edge of my seat. The scene where they are running up the hill and the jets fly overhead

Second Half C-. The movie hit a slow part when they got into the cellar with Tim Robbins. That was just creepy the way Robbins was talking to Dakota Fanning

Ending F. I didn't have a problem with the martians dying of bacteria, that was what the book and the '55 version of the movie. But when they finally make it back to Boston, to the only block that is still standing and they meet up with the Grandma and Grandpa, who looked like they were going to a cocktail party. Plus I wish the stupid whiny son would have died. One of the lamest endings to a movie ever.

Which is too bad because the beginning was really good

I enjoy watching nature shows, but this one was just terrible(in my opinion). It was way too drawn out. The movie only lasts 80 minutes, but really felt like 3 hours.

That's a very good way of putting it--but precisely why I didn't like it.I'm not a huge fan of action movies to begin with, but for me a good action movie is far more involved than that. It reminded me a lot of Signs, which I also hated.
An example of the opposite of War of the Worlds would be Independence Day...too many sub plots which seemed cookie cutterish...I get tired of all of that crap, which I thought War of the Worlds was refreshing.

"Independence Day" was basically a glorified B movie from out of the 50s and I think it worked on that level. "War of the Worlds" aimed to be something more and I think succeeded on that count.

You mean M Night Shimilimilimilians movie? Yeah, it ws OK, but nothing special. I haven't seen it for a long time; I don't remember having any reaction, good or bad to that movie.

Watched War of the Worlds last night... so bad.

Did anyone actually like this movie? I thought it was horrible

Also watched Must Love Dogs and liked it... but I like most romantic comedies and like John Cusack.
:hey: I liked War of the Worlds. I thought it was different, in that it didn't really have any sub-plots. It is what it is - a quest for survival. It is a simple action movie, nothing more, nothing less.
That's a very good way of putting it--but precisely why I didn't like it.I'm not a huge fan of action movies to begin with, but for me a good action movie is far more involved than that. It reminded me a lot of Signs, which I also hated.

Signs was horrible.I can't believe the same mind that made The Sixth Sense made that crap.
