I watched Notorious last night (Hitchcock, not B.I.G.). It was entertaining all the way through, but I'm sort of left wondering what the point was... it was sort of predictable and things ended up sorting themselves out just fine in the end. Kind of unusual for a Hitchcock film. Mildly disappointing.

Have you gotten into any Kurosawa yet?

For Samurai/military themed storylines, I would say Seven Samurai, Rashomon and Throne of Blood. For a great film noir check out The Bad Sleep Well and for something completely different rent Ikiru. I started from the his earliest ones and went forward to watch Kurosawa's development as a director. You'll be blown away when you realize the date these were made and how much he brought to films. So many used his methods. And you'll get to realize how great an actor Toshiro Mifune was.

pretty much all of his work is great on some level. he had a directing career that lasted like 50 years. some of his earlier films act their age. others hold up really well. he moves between almost gaudy, spectacle films like "ran" and "throne of blood" to tense dramas like "high and low" and "the bad sleep well". adding to the greatness, toshiro mifune is in dozens of his films.

The firecrackers really make the scene, I had never thought about it the way the author of the article explains.

I'm surprised that the author didn't mention that P.T. Anderson saw that device in an indy film and used it as a result. In the Boogie Nights commentary, Anderson says once he saw that firecracker scene in a movie, he knew he had to use it one day.

I think you're being generous. In general, Nick Cage is ok, if in the right role. But for all that is good and holy, AVOID THIS MOVIE! It's just beyond bad. 0/5 *Avoid, avoid, avoid.

By the end of it, I just couldn't believe what I was actually watching on screen. How the story came from burying the time capsule to the say it ended in an hour and a half is completely beyond me? I've seen more plausible endings at 3:30 AM on the sci-fi network.I really wanted to like this, especially after seeing Ebert's 4 star review, and enjoying the director's earlier works The Crow and Dark City.

Ebert is completely off his rocker.

I don't think there's a bad Kurosawa film. But I'd start with Seven Samurai, then Hidden Fortress, and then Rashomon.

I don't think there's a bad Kurosawa film. But I'd start with Seven Samurai, then Hidden Fortress, and then Rashomon.

Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and High and Low are my favorites, but don't neglect Ran, Hidden Fortress, and Throne of Blood, too. THEN get into Ikiru and Yojimbo and be really amazed that Kurosawa could do every type of film--Ikiru is a very different sort of film (non-samurai for one thing) and Yojimbo, while it is samurai, is more comedy than anything.

Adaptation is one of my all time favorite's as is the Rock when it comes to action movies. He was great in Raising Arizona as well. Despite all the trash he has been and seems like he will continue to be in, it seems like I'm always willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when he one one of my favorites growing up. One of these days I'll find myself surprised again, until then I'll laugh a little at the absurd hair cuts and awkward running sequences and write mean spirited, swarmy, reviews. But thats just me.

I actually love the fact that the last third of the movie is so crazy and spoof like, as it ends up being exactly how he says he doesn't want the story to end up. Jonze goes all the way with the irony.Also, is movie has two of the coolest and most realistic car crash scenes in film.

Watching Moonstruck and Leaving Las Vegas, I think we saw an actor that was capable of a good career. But for the most part, Cage is opting to star in really silly action stuff. I don't even care that he wants to be an action star. But couldn't he pick more Predator-y roles and less Con Air-y ones?

Exactly. That gimmick might have been funny if it only lasted for a few moments.There's a part in Choke (a movie I liked a lot) where you think, "Uh oh. The movie sucks now." But it quickly finds its course again and finishes well. Adaptation? Once it veers off track it never recovers.

I actually love the fact that the last third of the movie is so crazy and spoof like, as it ends up being exactly how he says he doesn't want the story to end up. Jonze goes all the way with the irony.Also, is movie has two of the coolest and most realistic car crash scenes in film.

The device had merit. But I think it's a bad idea to transform an otherwise clever movie into a cliche just to be clever. The device is ephemeral, and you're left with a lame cop-out gimmick in the end.

Just watched The Power of One for the first time in years. Still love this movie. Although the part when the kid gets abused in the orphanage hits me harder now that I have kids. Can't even watch that part anymore.

Very Bad Things: I watched it years ago but I had forgotten how great it was until I saw a youtube clip of it yesterday. Watched it again last night and I'd have to rank it as one of my top 3 movies of all time. Diaz plays the psycho bride perfectly and each of the buddies how their own unique style of crazy. Pretty much a perfect comedy. Laughed my ### off at the ending. Very well done. 5/5

watched "300" last night on cable. a technical marvel to be sure but a laughably bad script. i realize that it is an adaptation and taken from a comic book but that doesn't mean it has to follow such drivel so faithfully. it needs to be taken out of the juvenile reader's domain and refashioned into something more mature. like a lot of critics, i found the subtext to be alternately pretty distasteful and comical. it's a visual treat but, beyond that, leaves a lot to be desired.

I watched "Lifeboat;" that was pretty good. I'm always interested in feature-length, single-setting films, for some reason ("12 Angry Men" probably being the best one I've seen so far). I've got "Rope" on the PS3, along with maybe a half-dozen other Hitchcock movies, loaded up and ready to go, just as soon as I can find the time.

The Biggie version. Ok for a biopic, actor playing Biggie was about as spot on as possible. Couldn't help thinking while watching it that yeah his life was probably like that, but a whole lot cooler. Too much music, even for a movie about an entertainer and most of it is just the actor rapping like Biggie, I'd rather listen to the real thing on a CD.

In case you were thinking of renting this, don't. Like the idea of Michael Clark Duncan as Balrog and Neil McDonough as Bison, but the movie didn't do anything with it. Vega was terrible. Most of the characters I didn't recognize from playing the original games. Would rather watch the JCVD version, and thats not saying much.

Those were the only guys I recognized as well. That Gen Master guy was in the original nintendo game I think. Nash is somehow related to Guile's character.I forgot to mention just how painful it was to watch Chris Klein act like a BA for the Nash role, man that was bad.

Lesbian Vampire Killers: The name will probably throw most people off, but I'm glad I watched this movie. It is funny! The plot is ridiculous as expected but the rest of the movie is done surprisingly well. I was expecting something on par with Mega Shark vs Giant Squid or Zombie Strippers but this movie was right along the line of Shaun of the Dead. Worth a watch if you want some laughs. 3.5/5

Finally got around to watching this one last night. I have to say, I very much enjoyed it. I like stories which are relatively easy to follow, well acted, nothing too far fetched and well told. I find myself enjoying George Clooney movies quite a bit. I think he did a very good job with this one and I really enjoyed his role in the movie as a "fixer". A few things I didn't necessarily care for were a)next time this guy that routinely works for obvious multi-millionaire power guys, have the debt that is troubling him so much as a bit higher than $75K. Yeah, it is a decent size number, and the back story of his old gambling troubles fit in nicely....but I found myself constantly detracted with the thought "come on, if I needed to, even I could come up with that amount, and I'm no where near as well off or tight with such a rich and powerful crowd". Again, a nit pick, but that's what I do. Also, I don't think Tilda Swinton really deserved an Oscar win for her role. She played it nicely.....but it wasn't really that good. Clooney definitely deserved an oscar nomination. Very good movie overall. Score it a 4.5/5.0.

Thanks to jdoggy and whoever else recommended this in this thread. About the most one could be entertained in a one hour span. NPH turns in the best work of his career and always good to get some Nathan Fillion in as well. The music numbers were very well done. A musical for people that hate musicals.

The cheese level is great is these. The first big race in this one, after plowing through through the entire city, they just happen to be neck and neck for the final quarter mile. Shocking. There is no way I'd watch one of these movies without a big screen and a big stereo.

I find myself enjoying George Clooney movies quite a bit. I think he did a very good job with this one and I really enjoyed his role in the movie as a "fixer". A few things I didn't necessarily care for were a)next time this guy that routinely works for obvious multi-millionaire power guys, have the debt that is troubling him so much as a bit higher than $75K. Yeah, it is a decent size number, and the back story of his old gambling troubles fit in nicely....but I found myself constantly detracted with the thought "come on, if I needed to, even I could come up with that amount, and I'm no where near as well off or tight with such a rich and powerful crowd". Again, a nit pick, but that's what I do. Also, I don't think Tilda Swinton really deserved an Oscar win for her role. She played it nicely.....but it wasn't really that good. Clooney definitely deserved an oscar nomination. Very good movie overall. Score it a 4.5/5.0.

I liked this movie a lot. Though I disagree with what you said about Tilda Swinton. I think she was fantastic.

Thanks to jdoggy and whoever else recommended this in this thread. About the most one could be entertained in a one hour span. NPH turns in the best work of his career and always good to get some Nathan Fillion in as well. The music numbers were very well done. A musical for people that hate musicals.

Fast and Furious: Got exactly what I expected / wanted. Some cool cars and great chase / race scenes. Oh, and Jordana Brewster . 2/5

I liked that they went back to the basics with using a lot of the stuff that worked in the first one. Not much character development, the first set of characters were still the best. Enjoy watching Vin Diesel giving Paul Walker a hard time. The opening heist scene was the best of the franchise I thought.

I still pop in the original once in a while, some great cheese there.

It's the same plot line as Point Break. For some reason people always fail to articulate the similarities. Either watch the movie again or just reflect on the plot. Start to finish, same story with 2 differences: cars not surfboards, no Gary Busey.

I never said I didn't enjoy Point Break as well.

One thing Fast and the Furious has going for it was a young Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster >>>>>>>>>>> Lori Petty.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply otherwise. Re-reading my post, the tone was a bit edgy. I've just always found it amusing that the two movies have nearly identical plots. The difference is that Johnny Utah was way cooler....

Of course, I never did consider just how close the plots resemble each other, right down to the minute pretty much. But I have to say, the formula works.
