tried to watch "beat the devil" over the weekend. john huston directing bogart, lorre and gina lollabrigida in a comedy written by truman capote. unfortunately, the film stock is in such a sorry state that it makes it damn near impossible to enjoy watching it. i guess i will have to wait for it to be cleaned up and re-mastered.

also watched depardieu's "cyrano de begerac" and enjoyed it. i saw this in the theater when it came to US when i was in college. it's a fun yarn. gerard depardieu is such a reliable actor - his turn as dantes in "the count of monte cristo" was superb - that it's easy to overlook his ability if all we see him doing is hollywood films.

Youngblood

I had never seen this before. Cheesy, corny, 80s sports movie. Awesome. Loved the scenes where Swayze shaves Rob Lowe's bush with a straight razor in the locker room, and the hockey training montage that is 75% boxing work. Only in the 80's would the audience be expected to cheer the chipped tooth of a Junior League Hockey player in the climax, but in defense of the movie, the dude is like 35.

3.5/5

Fans of movies like Miracle, Karate Kid, Bull Durham, and such will eat this up.

Hotel Rwanda

Sure, I'm a little late to the party here. Talk about your feel good movies.....okay this one was tough. My wife had to stop watching it when they started rolling in the kids from the orphanage. Don Cheadle with a strong performance. Man, I gotta say that was one crappy situation to be in. I can't believe he didn't high tail it out of there ASAP, instead sticking it through. I liked this movie pretty well, but such a downer. "The river road is all clear" holy craps what an ahole.

Score it a 4.0/5.0

Marnie Alfred Hitchcock movie starring Sean Connery. Interesting and somewhat suspenseful, and certainly a quality movie on its own merits, although not one of Hitchcock's best.

Return to Paradise Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, and Joaquin Phoenix. This is Vince Vaughn in a serious role. The premise of the movie is interesting... Vaughn and another one of his buddies must return to Malaysia to serve 3 years of prison time (if they both go) or 6 years of prison time (if only one of them goes), or else Joaquin Phoenix (who has already served 3 years) will be hung by the end of the week. A forgotten flick from 1998. It's a decent movie.

Chinatown A very good movie starring Jack Nicholson in his prime, replete with that Nicholson swagger. Didn't really see the ending/explanation coming. The best of the three movies I watched this weekend.

it's a good film but kind of loses its way, i think. i think the detective part works better than the love story and family drama parts. john huston is pretty great in this.

Not sure I can agree with this. In a lot of screenwriting classes, Chinatown is used as a reference as to the structure of what a 2 hour screenplay should be. A lot of Syd Field's books use a lot of examples from the screenplay as well.Very solid film, any way you want to look at it. Recommended as a classic.

Falling Down: An old favorite. One of Michael Douglas's best roles. The movie goes a little overboard at times but not enough to ruin it. 4/5

17 Again: Not sure how I got suckered into watching this one... Cut and paste movie. Old guy hates his life, wishes he was young again. Poof all of a sudden he is 17 again! Goes through his last year of school again and realizes that his life was perfect and he really didn't want to change a thing. Awwwe. So cute. 1/5

The Foot Fist Way: Movie about small time Tae-Kwon-Doe instructor who is obsessed with his whore of a wife and some "big-time" martial arts actor. The comedy is pretty cringe worthy. It reminded me a whole lot of The Office when you're watching Michael doing some ridiculous. Not bad overall, pretty low budget but done well. 2.5/5

it's a classic, to be sure. i enjoyed it but that doesn't mean it is flawless. my point about losing its way is somewhat validated by Adebisi's comment in bold. it's a good film, told reasonably well, and with good performances.

The only reason I haven't seen this is I've already seen Sometimes in April - which covers exactly the same material. That movie wrecked me.

Wristcutters: A Love Story: Aw, Sundance fave, you had me with your quirky little title, your soundtrack consisting only of people who had committed suicide, plus Tom Waits, and your black, black humor. And then you lost me by...well, just being boring. This is about 30 minutes of a clever movie. Unfortunately, the movie is 90 minutes long. 2/5

Le Samourai: Terrific, terribly stylish French movie from the 60s, kind of a gangster/detective/samurai thingie. The directing is magnificent, and before you know it, you're really drawn into what is in essence a rather thin plot. Not quite the masterpiece it's claimed to be, IMO, but awfully good. 4/5

I must have hung on for about 30 minutes longer then you before the moving lost me. I'd give it 3.5/5. But I wasn't following what has happening in the story by the end either. Very clever though.

Revolutionary Road

Good movie with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Not great, but definitely worth seeing. Difficult movie to watch, so don't rent this if you are looking for something light.

I liked the trailer. But you've confirmed what I suspected: clever idea, but not enough for a full-length movie.

Alain Delon is

really liked Aidan Gillen in the bad guy role
he must have really improved after his turn as the villain in "shanghai knights" with jackie chan and owen wilson.
I don't think he did, at all, in fact I thought he was the worst part of this movie. He was good as Carcetti, but just wretched in this.If you like car chases or watch MTV music videos, you can stomach this movie, but thats about it. I think Cena has a lot of potential in movies, but none of that has been tapped yet.dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.1/5

liked him as well in the wire

i think i have seen in a few other films but he's forever tommy carcetti to me. he's been pretty awful in the other roles but his best work to date has to be in "the wire".

The Great Buck Howard

I enjoyed this. John Malkovich was terrific as a well past his prime "mentalist" based on the Amazing Kreskin. "I love this town!"

Watchmen: Pretty freaking good. I have never read the book or comics so I was going in blind and was pleasantly surprised. Probably the best comic/superhero movie besides The Dark Knight. I didn't even notice that it was almost 3 hours long. 4.5/5
I think comic book movies usually suck. So Watchmen was better than most.
I watched this last night. I enjoyed the movie a whole lot more than the comic book.

Yeah, the lady and I watched this a while back. I may go as high as 3/5 on a good day, maybe. But it was nothing great by any means.

The Last Outlaw

90's HBO Western with Mickey Rourke as a Jack Sparrow type bank robber, who joins up with a posse to hunt his former gang that consists of solid actors Ted Levine, Steve Buscemi, Dermot Mulroney, John C McGinley, and Keith David. I wanted to like it, and usually enjoy Westerns, but every single member of the cast mails in their performance with the exception of Mulroney who tries, but it is just over his head as a lead man.

2/5

Don't bother.

Seems like some movies are better suited for the short film format.

I really wanted to like this but found too many problems with it. Overly long and convoluted. Weak attempts at humor and morphs into a cheesy horror flick many times. Tries too hard to be deeply philosophical."We're all puppets. I'm just the puppet that can see the strings."

Some of it didn't work, for sure. But two things that stood out for me:• The opening sequence with motion-enhanced 3D stills was incredible.

• The sequence where the god recants that he doesn't believe in miracles was poignant. When he describes the trillions of random events that needed to occur for him to meet his girlfriend was a good piece of writing.

The Last Don Horrible acting and tries too hard to be like The Godfather (The Last Don and The Godfather were both based on Mario Puzo books), but even though the plot is extremely predictable, it was still a somewhat enjoyable movie if you're into mafia films. I'll be watching the sequel over the weekend.

The Chumscrubber

Take Donnie Darko, American Beauty, and Alpha Dog and insert into a blender. Ambitious, if not quite brilliant. If you're a fan of suburban angst subject matter, you should enjoy. A couple scenes not for the squeamish.

4/5

This American Life, Season 2

The Showtime series based on the excellent NPR radio show. This is mostly incredible stuff. A must-see for documentary fans. Groundbreaking stuff.

The Public Enemy (the old Cagney flick, not to be confused with Public Enemies, out in theaters now): I liked this movie a lot... admittedly, that's at least partially because I think the old-time sayings and mannerisms are pretty funny. But I would give it a :lmao: . My first Cagney film; I'm downloading Angels With Dirty Faces right now.

Yeah, it was depressing. There was a very similar one, but with chicks. Also good but depressing. Brokedown Palace, maybe?

Call me crazy, but I thought Anne Heche looked pretty cute in this movie.Anyway, I just watched Shallow Grave. I think one of you guys may have recommended it. Great, great flick... hard to talk too much about it without giving it away, but I really enjoyed it, beginning to end. :lmao:

Have you seen Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave? It's arguably his best work and in the same league as Blood Simple and the Hitchcock greats. He manages to fit a little more dark comedy in it than some of the others, while keeping the tension high. Love the ending.

In Bruges

Another :football: I saw the ending coming a little, but good acting and story. And Ralph Fiennes is hilarious.

The International

Kept my attention, I guess that's about all I can say about this. I liked Clive Owen and the lead evil banker guy, but didn't care for most of the other actors. Story line was way over the top, total  A few decent twists and turns, liked the whole scene at the Guggenheim too, actually I liked the "consultant" too in this one. Can't say I'd recommend it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid it. Score it a 1.5/5.0

Miss March: Raunchy movie about a kid about to have sex for the first time after prom. He gets drunk and ends up in a coma for 4 years. Wakes up to find out his girlfriend is in playboy. Cross country trip to the Playboy mansion ;) . Hijinx ensue. A couple hilarious parts but they didn't make up for the other very weak attempts. 2/5 because of all the boobs.

Have this at home, hopefully I'll get a chance to watch it tonight. Love these guys in The Whitest Kids You Know, one of the best sketch comedies of all time.

Thank you! I was wondering where the hell I'd seen them.

That show is awesome, and it's the logical outcome of both Monty Python and Kids in the Hall.

Rented Revolutionary Road last night.

What a depressing POS that was. Good acting, but nothing enjoyable about the story whatsoever.
After watching this over the weekend, I have to agree. Supposedly based on a great book, I'm assuming the movie lost a lot in translation. Also recently watched Watchmen and thought it was by far the worst of the recent hyped comic book adaptations. Really confusing plot. It looked cool though, and bonus points for having Jackie Earle Haley in a major role.

I came in here to post this movie. I really liked it. After I watched it, I kept thinking that it kept my attention even though it was slow but it was very well acted and these are the type of movies I really enjoy especially that I stumbled across it on one of the HBO's in the middle of the night.

The Haunting in Connecticut: Unless you like things that pop out to scare you, avoid this waste of time. It seems every 5 minutes someone would pop up behind a person, appear in a mirror or a quick flashback. Plot was basically the same as any other haunted house movie. Bad things happened long ago in the house, souls are stuck in it to haunt.

Interesting article on the family saying that they are full of ####.
