Wristcutters: A Love Story: Aw, Sundance fave, you had me with your quirky little title, your soundtrack consisting only of people who had committed suicide, plus Tom Waits, and your black, black humor. And then you lost me by...well, just being boring. This is about 30 minutes of a clever movie. Unfortunately, the movie is 90 minutes long. 2/5

I came in here to post this movie. I really liked it. After I watched it, I kept thinking that it kept my attention even though it was slow but it was very well acted and these are the type of movies I really enjoy especially that I stumbled across it on one of the HBO's in the middle of the night.

Maybe it just caught me at the wrong time. I'm usually a fan of slow-paced movies. Really wanted to like this one.

The Haunting in Connecticut: Unless you like things that pop out to scare you, avoid this waste of time. It seems every 5 minutes someone would pop up behind a person, appear in a mirror or a quick flashback. Plot was basically the same as any other haunted house movie. Bad things happened long ago in the house, souls are stuck in it to haunt.

Interesting article on the family saying that they are full of ####.

We've watched quite a few movies (for us) over the last couple weeks. Watching Munich now which is off to a promising start.

No Country for Old Men - Big fan. But I would have been shocked it if was any other way. I love the Coen Brothers, Tommy Lee Jones, and movies about the Texas border. I also really like Josh Brolin. Javier Bardem was a great bad guy. I also seem to really like art where nobody ends up learning anything about themselves through the course of the work. For example, I've always loved Larry McMurtry books.

I could have done with someone else playing Woody Harrelson's part.

3:10 to Yuma - As a fan generally of westerns, I was pretty disappointed in this movie. I'm used to movies where not a whole lot happens for long stretches, but nothing interesting every really happened for me. I think maybe I let my impression that Christian Bale is an ####### get in the way (which hasn't happened to me before) because I could never find myself pulling for the protagonist. And then ending seems to have been done over and over again (which makes sense since it's a remake of an old film).

Orgazmo - I've been curious about this for years, and decided to watch it because it was available for streaming on Netflix. I guess I'm glad that I saw it. It was what I thought it was going to be. A few laughs, but long stretches of unfunniness. It was either really irritating or brilliant that a movie about porn featuring a bunch of porn stars in it (Chasey Lain> Hi) had virtually no female nudity.

X Files: I Want to Believe - It was an average, 90 minute long X-Files episode. Not a terrible movie, but it's hard to believe that I waited ten years for that. Spectacular beard on Mulder. I was sorry to see him shave it off.

You guys were right - you have to go in without expecting anything in particular, and sort of just get lost in the light comedy stuff (which doesn't ordinarily fly with me). I've had that Soggy Bottom Boys song stuck in my head ever since I watched the movie. The song that those hot girls at the river were singing, too. Definitely going to download the soundtrack, which I understand was far more commercially successful than the movie itself. Interestingly, although I think George Clooney acted his part well, I don't think he was quite the right actor for the part... if that makes any sense. But I can't come up with anyone else who I would've cast for that role. Weird, I know.

I think you might have mentioned seeing it recently, but if not, check out The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.and anyone that's into old school slasher flicks should see the new My Bloody Valentine. Everything you could want in the genre.

I did see it (and liked it) based on reviews in this thread. And I'm a fan of old school slasher flicks, so I'll have to put My Bloody Valentine on the list.Didn't like Munich as much as I wanted to. It was a good story and a great looking film, but I just never really connected with the characters. Spielberg should have spent more time exploring the characters and less time showing us the details of every single assassination.

Rented Revolutionary Road last night.

What a depressing POS that was. Good acting, but nothing enjoyable about the story whatsoever.

After watching this over the weekend, I have to agree. Supposedly based on a great book, I'm assuming the movie lost a lot in translation.Also recently watched Watchmen and thought it was by far the worst of the recent hyped comic book adaptations. Really confusing plot. It looked cool though, and bonus points for having Jackie Earle Haley in a major role.

Yes, it was depressing. But that doesn't make it a POS.

Cool. The soundtrack's great. If you get a chance, rent this. It's a live DVD of the concert. Great stuff.

it's a trifle really. it's more a romance than a thriller. curiously devoid of tension, which runs against type for a hitchcock film. i watched "charade" the other night on cable and it's kind of the same. somehow cary grant works better with audrey hepburn for me. stanley donen does a fine job as a budget hitch here. it has smaller roles for james coburn, george kennedy and walter matthau.watched "infamous" last night with the wife. another truman-capote-"in-cold-blood" biopic. great cast but not revelatory in any way. toby jones does a better capote maybe than phillip seymour hoffman.

The Horsemen: Awful. Painfully awful. I've watched a lot of bad movies but this one has probably the worst scene in cinema history. Dennis Quaid is interrogating a guy and uses pretty much every cliche in the book. The guy is just as bad. Avoid this POS at all costs. Not sure how it got 40% on Rottentomatoes. My personal favorite part is how they find a computer chip (looked like an SD card) in a guys stomach. Quaid takes it to his IT guy and the guy says if that computer has ever been "registered" on the internet he'd be able to track it down by IP address. Complete nonsense. First of, that is impossible. Second, I'm pretty sure a you wouldn't be able to get any info of a computer chip that has been sitting in stomach acid, let alone pull all the data from AND use it to get the exact an exact apartment number. 0.0000001/5 (Would have gotten a zero if the Asian chick wasn't hot.

One of those movies that I just never watched for some reason but In the Name of the Father was awesome. Daniel Day Lewis was terrific as usual. Loved the scene when his father joins him in the cell for the first time.

I didn't finish Infamous. One Capote movie was enough for me.

Thanks to jdoggy and whoever else recommended this in this thread. About the most one could be entertained in a one hour span. NPH turns in the best work of his career and always good to get some Nathan Fillion in as well. The music numbers were very well done. A musical for people that hate musicals.

Ok, help me out here. The gf and I just popped in Boondock Saints (via a recommendation of one of the guys at Blockbuster) and W-T-F? We couldn't finish it. We made it 50 mins in and we're just looking at e/o thinking "Wtf is up with this movie?!?"And come to find out that it's well thought of?

What in all in God's creation are you people seeing that we aren't?!?

I'm not a huge fan either, although most of my friends who are into the gangster movies love it. I thought it was just okay... and I'm an Irish guy from Boston.

don't know. it's one of my favorites. Defoe is awesome.when it was relatively unknown, it was underrated. general consensus in the FFA right now is that it's overrated, so you fit right in.

There's a pretty good documentary out there about how big a tool the writer/director is, and how he basically blew his chance in Hollywood by being a #####. The name escapes me at the moment, but it's worth a look. And as for the movie, it's a meh. Not bad, not great.

The Long Good Friday was sort of disappointing. Maybe it's because I watched it over two separate sittings, maybe it was the British accents, or maybe it was because people were often no sooner introduced than they were killed off, but I didn't even know what was going on half the time. Not terrible, but not great, IMO.

watched "the long good friday" last night. it's from the late 70's and may be bob hoskins first big movie. he plays a london crime boss whose empire begins to crumble over the course of a single day. young helen mirren plays his wife/girlfriend. a very young pierce brosnan plays an irish thug. this feels like a brian depalma knock off in many ways. i really like bob hoskins and it is fun to watch him chew up some scenery

The Last Castle

Awkward prison drama. I wasn't sure if I should be cheering for the prisoners or not at the end of the film. Pretty hammy performance by Redford, I enjoy his earlier work 10 fold more than anything he has done in the last 20 years. I enjoyed Gandolfini's performance a lot more, but its hard to look at him as anything other than Tony Soprano. A decent popcorn flick with a few cool scenes, but I didn't agree with the message at all.

If you enjoy the Whitest Kids You Know, you will probably enjoy this movie. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, the film would seem amateurish at best. The two leads play really well off each other after working together for so long, but they don't interact with the rest of the cast at all. Fanboys and Sex Drive were both better as far as recent comedy DVD releases go.

Don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I believe that Harrelson was chosen for the role because his father was a Texas bounty hunter and he was basically portraying him.Another thing I noticed not too long ago that almost blew my mind and increased my appreciation of the film.....

The three leads (TLJ, Brolin, and Bardem) are never on the screen together. I'm not sure if this is well known or not, but imagine trying to pitch this screenplay if you were anyone but the Coens....awesome.

I didn't realize it. Almost adds to the metaphorical aspect of the movie. Like you could argue they are the same person.

Saw Appaloosa and Eastern Promises over the weekend. Both movies were basically meh, but it convinced me that Viggo Mortensen is a pretty darn good actor, he just dominates any scene he's in without seeming to try. He's made some interesting career choices, seems like he should be in more high profile stuff, but maybe he just wouldn't work in typical leading man type of roles. I was underwhelmed with him as Aragorn.

It's campy as best. We couldn't finish watching it. We thought it was THAT bad...I dunno, maybe we'll try it again in the future, but it was soooooo campy/bad/dumb....

I Love You, Man: Meh... not the best comedy out there. Jon Favreau and Jamie Pressly were hilarious although they only had bit roles. I'm a big Paul Rudd fan but the guy is far better playing 2nd fiddle than he is playing lead. Overall it was worth watching but not a comedy I'd watch again. 2.5/5

Adventureland: Great movie. A "romantic" comedy about kids working at a theme park after high school. It follows the typical plot line of guy meets girl, fall in love, big fight, makeup at the end yet this movie does it far better than anyone I've seen. I was shocked to see that it is the same director as Superbad. The two movies have similar goals, yet they arrive at them completely differently... Adventureland >>> Superbad. 4.5/5

Alien Trepass: A movie paying homage to '50s creature/alien films. The effects are laughably bad, which was intentional but I don't think the acting was supposed to be as bad as it was. If you like B movies it may be worth a look, otherwise, avoid. 1.5/5

The Last House on the Left: I was pleasantly surprised with this one; I was expecting it to be a typical horror movie about a haunted house and instead got a decent thriller. It is pretty twisted and I'm sure some people would find a couple scenes very disturbing. I thought it was very well done (for the genre) but the ending got taken a little too far. 4/5

It's hard to come up with another film company that matches the excellence of Pixar. They produce movies every year that are almost guaranteed to be artistic, poignant, and funny.

Highlights include a motorcycle gang driving around the inside of a house and a final battle that involves a truck with a motor launcher in the bed against said motorcycle gang. Of course Eye of the Tiger is played at least 2 or 3 times during the movie for the full effect. Awesome.

Did the John C Reilly double feature of Walk Hard/Step-Brothers over the weekend and had some good laughs. Those are easy to pick out on Netflix streaming, but I know there are some real gems in there deep.

Some of them were a big stretch (Cool Hand Luke, Say Anything), but they were just too good to leave off any list of recommendations.I don't know why netflix almost seems like it hides some of the better movies when searching the instant watch section. A lot of these I just happened to stumble upon.

Because of prodding from people I work with I watched Tombstone for the first time last night.

I think I am going to officially place Westerns along with Musicals as genres that I can't watch anymore. I don't have much interest in that time period, don't relate to the lifestyle, etc.. there is just something there and I have yet to actually enjoy watching a western. Thought the acting was cheesy except for a few characters, and found the script laughable. I know it's not supposed to be an Academy Award winner, but people seem to gush over it so I thought it'd be better. Also - what did Wyatt give Doc at the end of the movie? Must've missed something.

Been catching up on old movies that I've never gotten around to, and also watched The Deer Hunter the other night.

This movie could have used some editing and re-emphasis on different things. Part of my beef was that I didn't feel their anguish enough since the scenes in Vietnam felt about 10mins long. This is followed by 1hour + of them before going, the wedding, etc... Thought the last part had promise until the cheesy ending with DeNiro going back for Walken. Don't think I could give the movie much more than a 6/10 and while I'm glad I saw it, I wouldn't watch it again.

Deer Hunter wasn't really a war movie imho. The beginning hour+ of them is awesome. Also, next time you watch it, try to count how many beers those guys drink from the time they get off work until after the wedding.

I love Westerns. But "cheesy" is the best way to describe this movie.

Agree. This movie does not compare well alongside Apocalypse Now. The Deer Hunter has great acting and some of my favorite actors. But Coppola is a master craftsman who's work transcends his era. Whereas Michael Cimino is very inconsistent and sometimes even amatuerish.

I rented Death Race this past week, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! Obviously, it wasn't released to win any Oscars, but it was what it set out to be...A mindlessly entertaining guy flick with lots of action and explosions. Quality entertainment for a dreary Saturday afternoon.

I'm interested to see what anyone else thought.

The Soloist

Didn't do a thing for me. Solid acting, but everything else was bad. Slow, slow movie. Was anxious for it to end. Why it got the accolades it got is beyond me.

Wife picked Nights in Rodanthe earlier this week. What an abysmal piece of crap that movie was. Story line was uninteresting and slow to develop. And the "hurricane" scene was just ridiculous.

She also picked He's Just No That Into You and we watched that last night. Jennifer Connelly and Scarlett Johansson - how can you go wrong on that? Ben Affleck and Drew Barrymore...that's how. I actually thought it was a decent movie...some of the characters were a bit unbelievalbe (Gigi) and Connelly's character, but all-in-all it wasn't bad.

Pretty much the same. It was what I expected it to be, mindless action, so I wasn't disappointed.
