A Steve Zahn / Jennifer Aniston romcom. Its really hard for me to not like both of the leads and I enjoyed this more than I care to admit. If you need to watch something of this ilk with your wife or a date, you could do a lot worse than this one.

Let the Right one in

Had this one for awhile, and finally got a chance to watch it yesterday. I really enjoyed the movie, but for some reason, it felt like it was missing something in parts. It did a great job focusing on the two young kids and they were both terrific, imo, in their roles. The subtlety with which their relationship progressed, from the lack of eye contact, to the hugging, I dunno, I thought it was really well done. However, they seemed to not give enough detail to the supporting characters and their relationships to the primary two characters. Eli's protector was horrible, I mean they set up a scene where he is packing his bag, yet fail to explain why some of the stuff he is carrying. And he is just the worst, I mean, how can't he get caught. Yet the pain he felt as Eli was securing her relationship with Oskar was nicely done. And Oskar's father, what is the deal with his "buddy" that stops over while Oskar is there? The scene felt awkard, and forced and yet without answer or further remark throughout the movie. The last scene can be interpreted a few ways, and I'm fine with both of them actually, I thought that was a nice way to close it out. I'd say this was one of the better movies I've watched over the past few years, but I still came away from it with a feeling of slight disappointment. Either way, still recommended, score it a 4.25/5.0.
I noted earlier in this thread that there have been complaints about the subtitles included in the US release, and the production company has announced it will re-release the dvd with the original "theatrical release" subtitles, which reportedly are far superior in terms of capturing subtleties from the original swedish. I didn't have a problem with the protector role as it was my impression that his reckless acts were a recognition that he was looking for an end. I thought the scene with the father was pretty well done and that it was clear that Oskar took off when the booze came out. I thought the ending was great, overall a very good movie. Was a bit confused by Eli's privates - not sure what was intended there.
I just saw this last night. I thought it was excellent. A few questions that kind of reiterate what was asked above:mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

1) Do you think Eli really loved Oskar or was she just using him? I am really dumb because it took me until the last scene to figure out that the original protector was just Oskar 50 years ago and what Oskar's future was going to be.

2) What was the point of the dad having the gay lover? Was it just to show that Oskar wasn't close to anyone because as soon as the lover came, he ignored Oskar?

3) The privates thing - I think that goes back to when Eli was telling Oskar that she's not a girl. At the time I assumed she meant that she's a vampire. But could it also mean that she was a boy who was castrated or something?*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

She was using him to gather blood for her mainly because there were too many risks involved for her to harvest it herself all the time. He was a mark the entire time. The old man was not her original protector, she had cycled through some other ones.

2. I think it was just to show that Oskar was unwanted and searching to belong and have a relationship with someone.

3. I think Eli was a female vampire either born from other vampires perhaps centuries ago or created some other way, either way she was an eternal being that will not age. *** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***

This is on PBS on Sunday night. It looks pretty interesting. Plus Lester Freamon is playing Nelson Mandela.

TELEVISION REVIEW | 'MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY: ENDGAME'

South Africa’s Invisible Agent of Change

By ALESSANDRA STANLEY

South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup, a feat that 25 years ago would have seemed about as likely as a capitalist Russia or a black president of the United States.

“Endgame,” a British-made drama on Sunday on PBS, reaches back to a period in the 1980s when South Africa could not host an international sporting event without boycotts and bloodshed. Nelson Mandela was still in prison, and the conservative government of P. W. Botha crushed protests and riots in townships like Soweto under cover of emergency rule. Security forces tortured and killed militants; terrorist bombs exploded in shopping malls. The country was a pariah in the civilized world and on the brink of civil war.

“Endgame,” a “Masterpiece Contemporary” production, stays at the edges of the best-known events and instead focuses on secret talks between Afrikaners and the African National Congress that began in 1985 and didn’t end until 1990, the year that Mr. Mandela was released from prison.

It’s a bit disconcerting to plunge back into a chapter of history that, however momentous then, may seem remote and sui generis now that the United States is fighting two wars and a global recession (including, despite the soaring price of gold, in South Africa).

And there was no happily ever after once apartheid was abolished: the worst didn’t happen, but the country now battles many of the kinds of problems — poverty, disease, corruption — that stymie other African nations.

This film doesn’t try for a universal theme or overarching lessons but, somewhat in the manner of a Peter Morgan drama like “Frost/Nixon,” magnifies the personal conflicts and conciliations that make for good storytelling.

Those were tense, high-risk discussions, and they couldn’t have taken place in a less likely setting — a stately manor in the English countryside — or been engineered by a less prepossessing éminence grise.

Michael Young (Jonny Lee Miller) is the back-channel hero of this film: a meek, earnest public affairs executive at Consolidated Gold Fields, a British mining company, who is given the task of evaluating company investments in South Africa and concludes that only dialogue can pull the country back from imminent disaster.

The film, which stars William Hurt and Chiwetel Ejiofor and was directed by Pete Travis (“Vantage Point”), is labeled a political thriller with some legitimacy, since it does have suspense, menace and even a scary car chase.

Facts are telescoped and trimmed without unduly distorting history, but what the narrative does best is frame a decisive moment and zoom in on the ordinary people who worked the sidelines of an extraordinary breakthrough.

Mr. Mandela, of course, looms largest even in the background. Clarke Peters, who played Lester on “The Wire,” is persuasively dignified and charming as Mandela, who in prison keeps up a civil, secret dialogue with the chief of security, Niel Barnard (Mark Strong), and also smuggles messages to Oliver Tambo (John Kani), then the head of the African National Congress.

Those were two covert channels of communication. The film mostly concentrates on another. Mr. Hurt is Will Esterhuyse, a philosophy professor who is recruited by Young to represent the Afrikaner viewpoint at the secret talks, mostly because more prominent public figures declined to take the risk. Mr. Hurt manages the South African accent credibly enough, but more important, he hits the half notes in a role that could too easily be conventionally righteous.

Mr. Ejiofor plays his counterpart, Thabo Mbeki, who at the time was the information officer of the African National Congress and went on to become president of South Africa after Mr. Mandela, from 1999 to 2008. Mr. Mbeki’s tenure may be most memorable for setting back AIDS prevention and slowing the distribution of antiviral drugs because he subscribed to a denialist theory that disputes a link between H.I.V. and AIDS.

Mr. Mbeki’s finer hours took place long before his rise to power, when he served as a go-between in the standoff between the government and the anti-apartheid movement.

In the film Young reports — behind closed doors — to the chairman of Gold Fields, Rudolph Agnew, played with a Dickensian flourish by Derek Jacobi. Agnew approves of the mission as long as it leaves him plausible deniability to accusations of meddling in South Africa’s internal affairs. Agnew keeps tabs on his aide while keeping him at arm’s length, warning him that should word of his mission leak out, “I shall have to deny all knowledge of it and disown you.” Agnew pauses, then adds throatily, “And I’ll be nothing if not convincing.”

Young brings two opposing delegations to Mells Park, a 16th-century country estate that was then owned by Gold Fields. And a little like the butler in the novel “The Remains of the Day,” Young earnestly preps the staff, assigns the chintz-covered guest rooms and keeps the postprandial Scotch flowing, a form of persuasion later described by Esterhuyse as “Glenfiddich diplomacy.”

The two sides have seemingly irreconcilable positions, and each man at the table has his own secrets and hidden agendas. It takes time, stealth and effort to overcome mistrust and build relationships, and throughout, Young’s tact and self-effacement —the un-Holbrooke school of diplomacy — help keep hostilities in check.

“It takes a big man to stay invisible,” Esterhuyse tells Young at the close of their final meeting. This film shines a light on the prim, humble businessman who risked everything to start a conversation — and kept his own mouth shut.

I watched A Few Good Men tonight. First time in a long, long time.

It's an entertaining movie but I guess I've not watched it since law school. Wow. Once the trial starts, it's almost unwatchable.

Adoration

Atom Egoyan effort really hits the mark. One of the top three movies I've seen this year. Talky drama with provocative situations, stellar acting and insightful, no-gimmick direction. I highly recommend this, but remember its a complicated story about family, loss, racism and social networking. No one get shot and there are no car chases.

4.5/5 stars
REALLY liked this movie as well. One of the better movies that I have seen this year. On the other hand, Trick 'r Treat was terrible.

The Damned United: The story of Football Manager Brian Clough. I know very little about soccer, and really don't care much about it but gave this a chance because of the 91% on RT. Smart choice. The movie does not focus on the game itself but rather on Clough's relationships, determination and embarrassments. Micheal Sheen (David Frost in Frost/Nixon, Lucien in the Underworld trilogy) was amazing. Even the girlfriend liked this one and she hates sports movies. 4.5/5
It was refreshing to see a sports movie that wasn't about a rag-tag group of scrappy misfits that come together and win the big game.

Just finished watching Babel. What a suckfest that was. Who the hell nominated this for Best Picture?
i finally caught this with the wife last night at home. she and i both liked it. it's not perfect, especially for a film that has a message, but it was still well done. it's somber but thoughtful.

Trick 'r Treat was terrible.
Really? I was planning on getting this for Halloween night. It's got a 93% RT rating. What didn't you like about it?
Little cheesier than I wanted it to be. Also, it seemed to want to be like the Creepshow movies and have 2-3 different story lines, but they were kinda told at the same time. Just didn't work for me on a couple levels. I love horror movies, but haven't really seen any decent ones this year.

I Walked out thinking.. Glad I saw it but not a Must see.. :kicksrock: Something was missing for me, and I'm not even sure it was how it ended.

Can't put my finger on "what was missing" but something was for me.. Maybe the jump in time without us seeing at least some of the plan..

No need to give away the BIG secret, just maybe let us see him following the main characters around building his ultimate plan.

I'd give it a 3 to 3 1/2 out of 5.

I have mixed feelings about the movie. On one hand, it's very corny and over the top. On the other hand, there are enough interesting actors and writing to sustain it. I agree about the trial. And the key moment where Nicholson confesses seems so implausible.

i would agree with that. "21 grams" or whatever was really very good.

Gigantic: Turned it off halfway through. I can't think of many movies that I've done this for. 0/5

Four Christmases: Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon have to go to all of their in-laws for xmas. Not much funny here. 1/5

Trick R Treat: 4 short stories mixed into one movie. It had some good suspense and was different from your typical horror film. Some of the stories left a little too much unsaid but overall it was pretty good. 3.5/5

Transformers 2

I think I'm one of the few that actually enjoyed this one more than the first, but I could follow what was happening a little better. The robot vs robot fights were still a mess for the most part and I had no idea who was who the entire time. Megan Fox is the hottest woman alive. Could do worse for a braindead popcorn movie. Bay's formula is so cliched at this point its embarrassing.

That's what I liked about it. Made you think about his plans and how he concocted them. I'd rather think about it than see it, regarding this. I think it adds much to the suspense. Showing him actually making his plans would be like a "Dummy's Guide to...." IMO.

Didn't mean show the plans.. More the following and watching.. I don't know, like I said it was missing something for me

Trick 'R Treat

I can't believe the other poster in this thread didn't like this. I thought it was the biggest fresh breath to the horror genre in years. Storylines are comparable to the best of Tales From the Crypt and pull no punches, and of course a little irony. Forget Drag Me to Hell, this is the horror movie to watch this season.

The Rutles

To give this movie credit, it was done years before Spinal Tap. What I didn't like were the half dozen or so extended music sequences where one line is repeated over and over. Only the Yellow Submarine tribute cartoon did I find interesting. Still a lot of good shtick, especially by the narrator. Thank you for being the granddaddy of the mockumentary genre.

2.5/5

The Goods Live Hard Sell Hard: I was really looking forward to this since it had such a great cast for a comedy (Piven, Ferrell, Helms)... but it just tried way too hard. Cut out half of the jokes that failed and this is a great movie but they just over did it. The couple small scenes that Ferrell had were very funny. Piven and Helms were exactly what you'd expect. Lots of funny parts in the movie but they were a bit overshadowed by so many unfunny ones. 3/5

The Orphan: Ummm...it wasnt bad, and the twist was pretty unexpected....lol. Thats all Im gonna say about it. 6/10

The Taking of Pelham 123: Denzel and Travolta do nothing new here, a decent watch, predictable though. 6/10

Public Enemies: Not as good as I thought it was going to be, it was a little slow. I prefer seeing Depp in more colorful roles, he was pretty vanilla in this one. 6/10

The Boat That Rocked: To be released in theaters here in the states as "Pirate Radio" in November. I liked this one. Its about a pirate radio boat operating in international waters of the North Sea in the 60s, while the British government tries to shut them down. Kind of a feel good comedy with a great soundtrack. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nick Frost and a motley crew of DJs provide good laughs throughout. Did I mention it has a great soundtrack? 7.5/10

A Perfect Getaway: Two couples on a Hawaiian vacation discover that psychopaths are stalking and murdering tourists on the islands. Not bad. I didnt see the twist coming near the end. Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich and Timothy Olyphant are all pretty decent in this movie. Not fantastic, but it is what it is. 7/10

Damn, another vacation?I just watched this last night, and Transformers 2 is much worse than the first one. True to being a sequel it amped up all the terrible dialog and seizure-enducing action scenes by a factor of 2 or 3 (which made it unwatchable). Some of the dialog and annoyance of the twin robots would make Jar Jar Binks embarassed. This is sad to say in a year that I also saw GI Joe, but I think Transformers 2 sets the new standard for terrible movies for me.

Since it's that time of year I aslo watched:

The Stepfather - a decent little horror movie from the 80s. With the amount of sequels and stuff like Slumber Party Massacre, you could do a lot worse than this for the 80s slasher genre.

Spoorlos (The Vanishing) - This is a great movie. Good pacing, directing, acting, etc... From watching the american version years ago, the ending wasn't a surprise so that took away a little bit from the movie, but still enjoyed it a lot.

Fear of a Black Hat

Clever mockumentary from the mid 90s primarily goofing on guys like NWA and Ice Tea. I laughed a lot, but it definitely felt more like a film than a documentary in several places. The plays on different rap songs were actually pretty decent. Make sure to watch the entire credits because they have a lot of good stuff that was cut from the film.

Glad you liked it. I think the Rap genre has a lot of comic material that has been wasted. There's a lot of stuff that deserves mocking in Rap.

Last House on the Left (2009)

I meant to watch the original first but this was the only thing that looked appealing in the Redbox last night. I generally avoid these type of torture porn movies outside of the Saw franchise but the plot appealed to me. Be warned this has the most graphic rape scene I've seen in a movie, (I've intentionally avoided Irreversible). I wish they spent more time torturing the murderers in the third act. The last scene of the movie is extremely stupid and it loses even more points just for having it there.

2/5

Year One

Wasn't as bad as some have claimed in this thread, but still pretty bad. I couldn't pay attention at all to the last 1/3 of the movie, but it did have a couple good gags. The Kane Bi-Polar schtick was pretty funny. Tons of wasted talent but Black was as likeable as ever, Cera has outgrown his shtick and its getting embarrassing. Still, this is better than Land of the Lost.

1.5/5

the original is a lot better

Chalk: Faux documentary about teachers in a public high school. Truly great--on par with Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show--for the first 30 minutes or so, but a few missteps and a cheesy ending kept it from being fantastic. Did love the Spelling Hornet near the end, though. 4/5
Maybe my view is skewed because this is my job, but I thought this movie blew. For a mockumentary it elicited zero laughs. The fake teachers were terrible actors.

Probably been mentioned before, but just re-viewed this one.

My favorite dark comedy of all time.

The writing/dialogue and delivery is incredibly perfect; probably the only way they can pull off such a taboo subject.

Watched "Election" with Reese W and Broderick. Found myself liking it, and it received a good rating on RT. It's definitely different, but worth a look.

Also watched "Just Friends." I've seen it before, but I do love Amy Smart more than the normal guy. Average to below average flick. Did I say I like Amy Smart?

I liked both of these (Election much more so).Amy Smart and Ryan Reynold's humor schtick makes the movie decent. Oh, and also Amy Smart's in it. :lmao:

I hope they continue with the rule that Amy Smart must be seen in a tiny pair of underpanties in every movie she's in.

Hmmm, bypassed it as another hackNslasher, but I'll give it a look based on your recommendation

We Own the Night - Recently mentioned in this thread so I gave it a shot. Very good performances with what they had to work with. Not really sure how Joaquin Pheonix got to be a cop but did get to see Eva Mendez nip. I can't recommend it. 2/5

Drag Me To Hell Big horror fan and Sam Raimi fan. Unfortunately we don't get enough of either. I'll be generous and give it a 2/5

Trick 'r Treat Not a bad contribution to the genre. You need to stick with it since the second half saves it. 3/5

Moving

Always love me some Richard Pryor and this was one of his better movie roles. Ending gets a tad bit carried away, but by that time you should be drunk anyway if you are watching it right.

3/5
Dana Carvey is hilarious in this. "I gave the man the wrong finger."

Plus Pryor's daughter in this was smoking.

One of the classics from my childhood.

Watched Sunshine this past Friday night.

Good movie, good concept. Didn't really understand the need for the turn in storyline about 1.5 hours in....seemed unnecessary and turned a somewhat believeable movie into :sadbanana: . But all in all, I was entertained.
I like this movie a lot. But yeah, that was a terrible plot device.
Tarantino actually featured this movie when he did a few days of screenings on some movie channell. He thought the first two acts were brilliant but that the third act was putrid and the theme the direct opposite of what made the first two acts so good. He despised the last act but still recommended it due to the tremendous first two acts. I still haven't watched it but will.

District 9 was pretty good as far as alien movies go. They combine a normal-style movie with some "The Office"-type scenes in which the characters are being interviewed as if we're watching a documentary. Somewhat predictable, but if you like alien movies, you'll probably like this one.

Terminator Salvations: I went into this with the lowest possible expectations. Everyone was saying that this moving was putrid... and I think they were wrong. It wasn't putrid, just really bad. Asides from the horrible acting, ridiculous plot and overdone cliches, it had some good eye candy. I would definitely not recommend watching it unless you have a big screen and a great stereo. As bad as it was, it was still better than Transformers 2. 2.5/5

Spread: Another ridiculously bad movie brought to you by Aston Kutcher. There was nothing good about this movie (other than all of the beautiful naked woman). 1/5

Linewatch: I kept dosing off and missing parts. I'm glad I got the rest. 0/5

Changeling - seemed long, but good overall 3/5

Paper Clips - interesting subject matter but too slow and boring; turned off after an hour. 1.5/5

Forgot one more from this weekend...

Wrong Turn 3: Maybe my favorite series of bad horror movies. Gruesome/hilarious kill scenes, horrible acting and lots of gratuitous boob shots. The unintentional comedy is off the charts. The plot has been the exact same for all 3 movies (same with most horror films)... group of people end up in woods in West Virginia (can't remember the 1st, 2nd was filming a reality series, 3rd was escaped convicts). They get stalked through the forest. Crazy mutant people take someone 'hostage'. Hero comes in and thinks he kills the mutant people. Mutant people have one last surprise attack but the hero finishes them off. Oscar worthy. 5/5
